Someone suffering from migraine headaches should not simply try to deal with the pain. These headaches can often be severely painful and often times debilitating. Many people are not able to work during a migraine attack and may need to be isolated in a quiet area for several hours until these headaches pass. There are many different types of treatments for migraine headaches and it is important to find a good doctor to help diagnose your condition and find treatments which are suitable for your individual case. There are several methods which you may be able to find a local doctor to help you with migraine treatment.

The first thing to understand when searching for a doctor is that no two physicians are alike. There are always going to be good doctors and bad doctors, and it is your job to find a good doctor. Most doctors are severely overworked and do not take the time with individual patients to find a treatment that is best on an individual basis. There have been many advances in the treatment of migraine headaches with a variety of different medications. However, many doctors do not keep up-to-date on treatments and may simply recommend one treatment for all cases. You must find a doctor you are comfortable with and who takes the time to listen to you and experiment with different types of medications to find something that works best for you.

A great way of finding a good doctor is to search out migraine support groups in your area. Small towns may be a little more difficult to find support groups; however, most large metro areas will have several to choose from in your area. Attending these meetings will allow you to socialize with other sufferers and you may be able to ask the group members who their doctors are. This will give you an insight whether or not they are happy with the doctor’s performance and if they would recommend them to someone else.

Another great place to find a good migraine doctor is online forums. Many large websites dedicated to migraine headache sufferers will have forums in which members can interact. You can search these forums for recommendations of doctors in your city simply by typing in your city name in the search box and looking for doctor recommendations. If you cannot find something which has already been posted then ask the question yourself. Simply ask if anyone knows of a good migraine doctor in your city.

If you have begun suffering severe headaches which seem to worsen with noise and light exposure you may be suffering from migraines. These headaches are not like the typical slight headaches which you can usually still function throughout the day with. These headaches only causing mild discomfort; however, migraines are usually debilitating and can keep you from work and other activities. Migraine headaches can be brought on by a variety of factors and triggers at any age. If you have been diagnosed as suffering from migraine headaches then there a few things you may want to do to provide yourself migraine treatment and help ease your pain and be ready for the next attack.

There are a few things which have been shown to reduce the pain and longevity of migraines. First of all you must find an area to lie down and relax in. This area should be extremely dark since many people are sensitive to light during a migraine attack. This area should also be very quiet and away from other noises in the house. You can help darken the room by installing blackout curtains which will eliminate almost all light. You may also try inserting earplugs or wearing some type of headphones to block out extra noise.

If you have began suffering migraines it is important to keep a daily diary of the events in your life. This will help keep track of everything you do and the meals in which you eat. Since there are many different types of triggers which can bring on a migraine attack it is important to start writing down everything you do before an attack occurs. Once an attack occurs you can go back and see what you did leading up to the attack. After a while patterns should start to emerge which will allow you to identify what is triggering your migraines and will allow you to avoid these triggers in the future.

There are also a number of medications which can help with your migraine headaches. If your migraines occur often, such as once a week, then you may be a candidate for preventive medicines. These medications can be taken daily and are meant to eliminate a migraine attack. On the other hand, if your migraines occur infrequently there are still medications which can be taken at the first signs of a migraine attack and help to shorten the attack or eliminate it altogether. There are a number of different types of medications which can be used in both fashions and you must experiment with your doctor to find the medications which will work for you.

There’s nothing easy about having a migraine. While in some cases the pain may disappear within a few hours in others it can last for days. Luckily, there are some easy things you can do to help soothe the pain and make the problem more bearable. The most effective is simply to lie in a darkened, silent room until the pain passes. But what are some other things you can do to speed up the process?

Over the counter pain killers can be an effective way of reducing pain from a migraine. While they usually won’t get rid of the pain altogether they can blunt the headache and make it more bearable. Two painkillers you could try are paracetomol and ibuprofen (which is an anti-inflammatory). It’s important to always make sure that you consult your doctor before taking any medication though.

There are also some over the counter pills which are made specifically for migraines. These are great because they target the exact pain caused by migraines. They’re usually more expensive than basic pills though. Always thoroughly read the instructions before taking any medication and make sure that you don’t become reliant on them!

Have you ever tried self-massage when you have a migraine? If not, then doing so can make a huge difference. Not everyone will find this tip useful but many will discover that it can soothe the pain of a migraine relatively quickly. The idea is to gently “knead” the head and neck to help relax the muscles. You will be able to feel areas that are tense or tender and should focus on these. Sometimes the relief will be instant while in other situations it might take time.

To massage properly you should only press lightly (otherwise you could cause more pain). Start by slowly and tenderly pushing down on different areas of the muscle. The strokes should be slow and long enough that you can identify the sore spots. In most situations it’s easier to massage someone else so if you can get your partner or friend to do this for you it can be a big bonus.

The other benefit of having a massage is that it can help you to generally feel less stressed. A good massage on the neck and shoulder area a few times a week can dramatically decrease your chances of having a migraine.

Sleeping is another effective way of reducing migraine pain. The problem is getting to sleep in the first place –especially if you’re suffering from a strong headache. To increase your chances of getting to sleep you should make yourself as comfortable as possible. Lying on a bed with pillows to support your neck and head is the best way of doing so. The room should be as dark and as quiet as possible. Sometimes you may find that sleep is the only thing that gets rid of a migraine. In some situations your body just needs time to heal and having a nap is the only solution.

To avoid migraines in the first place you should also make sure you get as much sleep as possible. If you have a stressful job that requires you to concentrate then getting enough sleep becomes even more important.

Migraines can be caused by a number of different things so it can sometimes be difficult to find out exactly what’s causing yours. If you regularly have migraines though then visiting a doctor is essential as it could be being caused by something more serious. Prescription medication may also be required in some situations when the pain is too much to bear.

Until you suffer from a migraine it’s difficult to imagine how painful they can be. Along with an intense headache a migraine will also often cause vomiting and an increased sensitivity to light. Stopping migraines before they happen by reducing stress, improving sleeping routines and trying alternative medicine is the best way to stop a migraine in its tracks. What if the migraine has already started though? How can you reduce the pain immediately to make it more manageable? This article will talk you through a few things you can do to stop a migraine as quickly as possible.

A migraine is more than just a headache – it can render a person completely debilitated with pain. Although the most common symptom is a headache this doesn’t do justice to the problems it can cause. In many cases it’s difficult to know when a migraine will start although there are certain triggers that may cause it. For example, some people find that a particular type of food will increase their chances of having a migraine.

The first step you should take is to try and workout the initial symptoms of a migraine. These symptoms vary from person to person but if you can work out the early signs then you can take steps to reduce the pain immediately. As soon as you begin to feel a migraine coming on you should take preventative measures to limit the pain.

For example, light can make headaches much worse so you should find a dark, quiet room where you can relax with a cold towel over your forehead. Many people try lying down and reading a book or watching the TV but it’s more effective to close your eyes and let them relax completely. Depending on what time of day it is you may need to use a face mask or even a pillow or sheet to block any incoming light. The less noise the better as this can make headaches worse. Relaxation and rest is vital for getting rid of a migraine as soon as possible and it’s the best way of reducing the pain.

If you have a family or live with other people then it’s important to explain to them how severe a migraine can be. There’s nothing worse than screaming children or loud music when you’re trying to stop a migraine in its tracks but this can be difficult to understand for people who don’t suffer from them. If you can’t avoid loud noise in your house then be prepared by buying a pair of noise-blocking ear plugs. You may find it helpful to put on some quiet, relaxing music in the background although many migraine sufferers prefer complete silence.

It may also help to take small sips of water. Some headaches are made worse by dehydration but it probably isn’t a good idea to gulp down too much in one go either as this could increase the chance of being sick. Instead, ask a family member to bring you a small glass and drink it slowly.

A common mistake is to try and get up to do things too soon after the migraine has passed. If you go straight onto a computer then this could cause the headache to return rapidly.

It’s also worth mentioning that you should always visit a doctor if you start to have regular migraines. In many cases they will be caused by an underlying problem that could be solved. Your doctor will also be able to advise you on the best ways to reduce the chances of having a migraine in the first place.

Do you suffer from frequent headaches and want to find migraine treatment that will help you to get rid of them or stop them from happening in the first place. One of the first things that people do when they notice a headache coming on is reach for a bottle of Aspirin or Tylenol to make the headache go away. Sometimes this may work and sometimes it is ineffective. The medication that will work for you will depend on the type of headache that you have. You will want to identify which type of headache you are experiencing in order to know which medication you should take for it.

One type of headache that is common for people to get is called a tension headache. This is the type that feels like there is a rubber band stuck around your head and the tension from it is squeezing tighter and tighter. Most of the time you may get one of these headaches from neck or eye strain. If you work on a computer and are constantly staring at the screen without taking many breaks you may get one of these headaches. These are often treatable with over the counter pain relievers such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or Aspirin and can last anywhere from a half hour to a week.

Migraine headaches are more severe than any other headache that you will have. Usually there are some different side effects that you will experience if you have a migraine. You feel nauseous or actually experience vomiting as well as have sensitivity to light. Migraines usually affect one side of your head and increased activity may worsen the painful symptoms that you experience. This type of headache will last anywhere from a few hours to a few days and is usually very painful the whole time that it hangs around. Women are the most common sufferers of migraine headaches, and medication may have to be prescribed in order to treat the symptoms that occur.

There are a lot of different over the counter and prescription medications that can be prescribed for migraine treatment. If you are someone who frequently suffers from migraine headaches then you will want to make an appointment with your doctor in order to have him prescribe a medication that will bring you some relief. Determining which type of headache you have will help determine which type of medication should be used to make the symptoms go away.

It is very important to find out how to lose belly fat and enjoy a better way of life with fewer episodes of migraine headaches.

People who have a predisposition to migraines and are overweight or obese are more likely to suffer from migraine headaches more frequently. In the cases that these people have excess amount of fat in the belly then most probably they will experience migraines more often. Research made by Drexel University examined people who fall in this category and reached into some very useful conclusions.

Before the research it was widely known that women experience migraine headaches more often than men. This is due to the hormonal changes the woman’s body has to undergo during period, menopause and pregnancy. That is also the reason why migraines are often refer to as the ‘female headaches’. The findings of this interesting study showed that migraine headaches affect both men and women between the ages of 20-55 and it also proved that obesity and belly fat contribute to an increase in migraine activity both in terms of duration and frequency.

What was very interesting is that women with belly fat were 30% more likely to suffer from migraines than women without belly fat. This means that for those women migraines were inevitable. Fortunately this was not the case with men and belly fat. Men with belly fat are not expected to experience more migraines then men without belly fat.

What is even more surprising is that women over the age of 55 with belly fat tend to experience less migraine episodes. In other words it is clear that migraines affect women in the ages of 20 – 55 and after that the episodes become less despite the presence of fat in the belly.

Nevertheless it is important that you find ways to fight both belly fat and migraines and your diet plays an important role to that. Certain foods are known to increase belly fat and at the same time they also trigger migraine headaches. Examples include full fat dairy products, alcoholic beverages, sweets and chocolates (besides black chocolate). Migraine treatment is not easy to achieve but there are ways to prevent migraine headaches, one of those is getting rid of your belly fat.

There are many reasons that someone may suffer from migraine headaches. Unfortunately migraine headache triggers are a lot and patients suffering from this terrible disorder need to take a lot of factors into account. Migraines can occur because of physical, mental, pharmacological or dietary reasons. In other words migraine headaches can be triggered in every aspect of our life. Each and every cause of migraine headaches has a special treatment and needs separate attention. Being able to identify these triggers will help sufferers avoid them and enjoy a better quality of life with less pain and suffering. Unfortunately there is no complete treatment for migraines but only ways to prevent and ease the headache pain.

Most common forms of migraine headache triggers

Hormonal Changes: Migraines appear very frequently in people who experience changes in their hormonal levels. This is the main reason why women are among the most common sufferers and this is also the reason that migraines are sometimes referring to as the ‘female headache’. Women who have a predisposition to migraines experience more severe headaches during their period. This is mainly to the changes in the levels of estrogen in their body. It is also very common for women to experience headaches during pregnancy, during their menopause period and ovulation. During these periods the hormone levels in their body change radically and this change triggers the headache pain.

Pharmacological triggers: Another very common migraine headaches trigger is medication. This is more frequent for people who take medication on a regular basis. Medication can be a cause for migraines. It has been noted that people who suffer from headache pain may take medication to get relief. If the medication is not in the correct and proper dose and it is not after the prescription of a doctor, it can create more headache pain and migraines. This is especially true in the cases where people believe that by taking more medication they will get faster relief from the pain. This is not true and as said above it can create the opposite results. Always before taking any medication for the treatment of migraines you need to get the approval of your doctor.

Food triggers: There are certain foods that trigger migraines. This holds true only for some people as there are cases where not all people are affected by these food triggers. Usually people who have a predisposition to migraines are more likely to be affected by food. The most common food suspects are: alcohol, beer and red wine; aged cheeses; chocolate; aspartame; overuse of caffeine; monosodium glutamate — a key ingredient in some Asian foods; salty foods; processed foods; phenylethylamine (present in chocolates); nitrates (preservatives used in sausage, bacon, and lunch meats); citrus foods and products. Also other migraine triggers that are related to food include skipping meals, fasting or eating too much.

Lifestyle triggers: Lifestyle plays a very important role for the generation of migraine headaches. People, who have stress either at home or work, are more likely to suffer from migraines frequently. Changes in the sleeping patterns, environment, weather conditions, and barometric pressures are among the causes that can trigger a migraine.

They can completely impact our ability to function in day-to-day activities. This type of headache can often debilitate those who suffer from them. It can cause them to feel nauseous as well as light-headed. In addition, the pulsating pain of a migraine can be so severe as to negatively impact the quality of life – many people find themselves canceling activities involving work and play.

Reasons for Migraines

A good majority of the population suffers from migraines every now and then; however, women are more likely to get migraines than men. Migraines are typically caused by the constriction of blood vessels located in the brain. There can be a number of factors that cause a person to suffer from the malady. Some of the causes are drinking too much coffee or drinks with caffeine, menstruation, skipping meals, the ingestion of certain foods such as cheese, chocolate, ice cream, fried foods or lunch meats, inadequate sleep, smoking, jet lag, alcohol consumption or even changes in the weather.

Blame it on your DNA
It’s believed by many in the scientific community that migraines can be passed down in a family. In other words, if your mother or father suffered from these types of headaches, you are more likely to as well.

Definition of a Migraine

Migraines can come in all shapes and sizes so to speak. Some can last only a half hour while some full-blown headaches of this type can last several days. In addition, each migraine can afflict the sufferer differently. In many cases, the throbbing pain starts on one side of the head then worsens as the person tries to succeed with their daily activities. At other times, a small amount of light or sound can be a cause for distraction. Other people feel nauseated to the point where they’ll vomit. As you can see, a migraine is certainly no picnic for anyone who suffers from this complaint.

Auras
Many migraines are preceded by auras – subtle alarms that indicate a migraine is about to occur. These auras can take the shape of broken lines. Others come in the form of flashing lights, a blurry vision or spots. Auras typically begin about 15 minutes or more on average before a migraine is introduced.

Other Signs
Other signs that harbinger a migraine can begin several hours to several days before the headache occurs. Such signs include unusual food cravings, thirstiness, excessive energy or irritability. Other symptoms that occur before or during a migraine can include loss of coordination, weakness and problems with speech.

Treatment Options

Because migraines result from different causes, a determination first has to be made as to the reason for the migraine. Some people get migraines because of a hormonal imbalance while others suffer from migraines because of the foods they eat or the amount of stress in their lives. Therefore, it’s important, if a determination hasn’t been made, that a person diary the events preceding each episode of a migraine. This way, the doctor has a means in finding out what the best treatment option is for the sufferer. In addition, some medical professionals may feel that certain tests need to be run, such as blood tests, an MRI or a CAT scan to make sure there are no extenuating problems that are associated with the headaches.

If the reason for your migraine is stress, then obviously it will be recommended that you reduce or modify the activities in your life causing the stress to exist. This may include changing how you eat, what you eat and getting more sleep. Many times, pain medications are prescribed as well as antiemetic drugs to assist in decreasing any nausea or vomiting.

Some practitioners advocate the use of acupressure for pain relief. Others use relaxation techniques and meditation to offset an attack. Yet other people suggest herbal remedies for migraine headaches relief. For example, some herbal antidotes include cayenne, dong quai (in a tincture) and feverfew. Ginkgo is helpful in increasing the circulation to the brain and tilden flower can help in relieving migraines connected with high blood pressure. Passionflower is usually prescribed for migraines associated with stress and anxiety.

Migraine Prevention

Probably to offset any migraine though, prevention is the best cure. If you feel such an attack coming on stop what you’re doing and rest. Avoid foods that trigger any attacks. Also, drinking more water and reducing your intake of coffee can help in putting a damper on the hold migraines can have over your daily routine. Keeping organized to lessen stress as well as regularly scheduled exercise can also help discourage these distracting headaches from disrupting one’s life.

Whatever the cause of your migraine, do all you can to maintain a daily calendar that doesn’t overwhelm you and keeps your life in balance. Eat healthily and learn to relax. Be good to yourself to keep any migraines from controlling your life.

People often confuse migraine headaches with sinus headache. Although some of the symptoms are common in the majority of the cases what people believe is a sinus headache is actually a migriane.

Many people often confuse migraine headaches with sinus headache or the other way around. It should be understood that these are 2 different types of headaches. Each of these types needs to be diagnosed correctly and needs a special treatment. It is a fact that:

Migraine headaches are many times wrongly diagnosed as sinus headache
In more than 90% of the cases self-diagnosed sinus headache is migraine headaches
Migraine headaches are accompanied with pain in the forehead and face while sinus headache with nasal congestion and runny nose.

What is a sinus headache?

Sinus Headache is a very common headache type among many people. The most common symptoms of sinus headache are:

Facial pain and pressure.
Nasal and sinus congestion.
Intense or mild headache.

There are a number of drugs available for the cure and relief of sinus headache. The use of these drugs is to provide relief and ease the symptoms of sinus headache especially the pain in the face and the nasal congestion.

What is the difference between a migraine headache and a sinus headache?

As mentioned above, people often confuse migraine headaches with a sinus headache. A recent research showed that a number of people who were diagnosed as suffering from sinus headache, they were actually suffering from migraine headaches. Both these headaches types are confused. The most common confusion is to diagnose migraine headaches as sinus headache.

A sinus headache is actually not so common as initially thought. Sinus headache is due to a viral sinus infection which is accompanied with nasal discharge, limited or no smell at all, pain in the face, high pressure and most probably fever. The pain from a sinus headache can be treated with antibiotics. In case antibiotics do not provide relief then the pain may be due to other factors and a specialist should asses the situation again.

Another recent study about sinus and migraine headaches defined a sinus headache as a migraine with sinus symptoms. In the study participated more than 3000 patients who had frequent sinus headaches the last 6 months. All patients were never diagnosed with migraine headaches but only with sinus headache, neither did they ever took migraine headache specific medication. After thorough diagnosis of the above cases it was found that almost 90% of the case previously diagnosed as sinus headache had actually migraine headaches. Patients shared some common symptoms that led people believe that there were suffering from sinus headache. These were: pain in the face, nasal and sinus congestion and finally pressure. The patients also exposed other symptoms that are more closer to migraine headaches symptoms. These are:

1.Nausea
2.Sensitivity to bright light and loud noise
3.Moderate to intense pain

Most of the patients participating in the study were getting relief from sinus headache by using nasal sprays for the nasal congestion and anti-inflammatory drugs. Most of them though did not get any relief using this kind of treatment and the simple reason was that most of them did not suffer from sinus headache but from migraine headaches. It was migraines who made the symptoms look like a sinus headache.

Another study proved the above relationship between migraine headaches and sinus headaches. Common sinus symptoms very often accompany migraines. In 45% of patients suffering from migraine headaches had at least a symptom of nasal congestion or watery eyes. It should be noted here that if the symptoms are due to migraine headache then they will be resolved using medication specific to migraine headaches treatment.

In order to be able to distinguish between a migraine headache and a sinus headache you can answer the following questions:

1. What was the severity of your headaches the last 3 months. Did the headaches had an impact on your way of life and daily activities?
2. Did nausea accompany your headaches?
3. When you had a headache, did you had extra sensitivity to bright lights and loud sounds?

In the case that you answer yes to at least 2 of the above questions then most likely you are suffering from migraine headaches and not sinus headache. If the answer to all above questions is true then almost certainly you are suffering from migraines.

In any case if you believe that your sinus headache are actually migraines then you should get assistance from your doctor to help you make a proper diagnosis and provide you with the correct medication.

To sum up, it is proven that most of the times a sinus headache is just a migraine headache with sinus symptoms. Being familiar with this can help you get the proper diagnosis and get the right treatment for the relief of the headache. Finally by doing a correct diagnosis and treatment you will be able to improve your quality of life and keep away the problems that a headache can create to your day to day activities.

Headaches are usually caused by disorders of the neck or are due to physical and emotional tension. One of the ways to treat such kind of headaches is to visit a physiotherapist a get some treatment for the neck pain and learn what you can do to prevent the pain from recurring.

For a lot of people, headaches are pain or tension at the top part of the neck. As the pain becomes more intense, it usually spreads to the back of the head, the temples, forehead or in most of the cases behind the eyes. When you move your neck or bend forward for some time, this tends to make the pain worse. This situation happens because the nerves in the upper part of the neck are connected to the nerves found in your head and face. A problem in the upper neck joints or muscles can cause severe pain to the head.

Any of the following symptoms below could suggest that your headache pain is coming from your neck:

• Are your headaches associated with neck pain. Does the pain begin from the back and going round to the front of your head?
• Do you have headaches with dizziness or light-headedness.
• Does you headache becomes better or worse when you move your neck or when you stay in the same position for a long time.
• Does the headache pain always feels worse on the same side of your head.
• Is the headache pain better when you put pressure to the base of the skull.
• Does the headache persists even after your doctor has checked for other possible causes.

Other causes of headaches besides neck aches may be: migraine headaches, allergic reactions or other factors

Ways for preventing headaches

Here is some useful tips to help you manage and prevent headaches:

Watch your posture

Stand and sit like tall people. Make sure your chest is lifted, your shoulders are relaxed, your chin is tucked in and at head level. Your neck position should feel strong, be straight and feel relaxed.

Watch your working position

You should try and avoid working having your head down or to one side for a long time. You need to make sure that you frequently stretch your arms and neck and not to remain in the same position for a long time.

Sleeping

Non confortable sleeping positions will add more load and strain to your neck. A down pillow or polyurethane moulded pillow is the best choice for most people. Your physiotherapist can you advise on what is the best pillow for you.

Regular Exercise

You should try and keep your neck muscles flexible and strong by applying the proper neck exercises. A physiotherapist can diagnose for tight or weak muscles and show you which exact exercises to follow in order to restore normal function.

Relaxation

You should try and be relaxed and non-stressed. You must identify when you are stressed and anxious. You may be feeling your shoulders stiffen or your teeth tighten without realizing it.

How physiotherapy can help you prevent headaches

Physiotherapists are specialised in posture and human movement. Physiotherapists can diagnose if your neck is causing or contributing to the headaches.

Some of the techniques physiotherapists can use to prevent or ease your headache pain are:

• Mobilization.
• Manipulation.
• Functional and rehabilitative exercises.
• Encouraging normal activity.
• Postural assessment, correction and advice.
• Relaxation therapy.
• Laser, ultrasound, electrotherapy and heat treatment.
• Massage.

A professional can also provide you with self-help ways to prevent headaches like:

Practical ergonomic tips to apply in the office and at home
Ways to adjust your furniture for better body positions
Relaxation techniques and other exercises.
