In the second Jewish Sacred Aging seminar podcast, we offer Rabbi Address’ recent workshop, “Three Program Ideas for Congregations and Baby Boomers,” presented this month at the regional Shabbaton of the Union for Reform Judaism.

Rabbi Richard F. Address is the senior rabbi at Congregation M’kor Shalom in Cherry Hill, NJ. He was called to the congregation after 33 years with the Union for Reform Judaism, where he most recently served as the specialist and congregation consultant for the North American Reform movement in the program areas of Caring Community and Family Concerns.

His work has been based on the belief that a congregation, to be a true “caring community”, must be founded on a theology of sacred relationships. A major part of Address’s work has been in the development and implementation of the project on Sacred Aging.

This project has been responsible for creating awareness and resources for congregations on the implication of the emerging longevity revolution with growing emphasis on the aging of the baby boom generation. This aging revolution has begun to impact all aspects of Jewish communal and congregational life.

Rabbi Address was ordained at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) inCincinnati (1972) and served congregations in California before joining the staff of the Union for Reform Judaism (formerly the Union of American Hebrew Congregations) in 1978. He directed the Union’s Pennsylvania Council from 1978 through 2000. In 1997 he founded the Department of Jewish Family Concerns and went full time in New York in January of 2001. Rabbi Address received a Certificate in Pastoral Counseling from the Post Graduate Center for Mental Health in 1998 and his Doctor of Ministry from HUC-JIR in 1999. He also received his honorary Doctorate from HUC-JIR in 1997.

Shulman was a 1944 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy — one of just fifty Jewish midshipmen commissioned in his class during World War II.

In the Pacific, Lt. Shulman’s destroyer survived both a typhoon and a Japanese kamikaze aircraft attack.

After leaving the U.S. Navy and returning to civilian life, he volunteered to help the Haganah, the paramilitary force of the Jewish Agency for Palestine headed by David Ben-Gurion. Shulman had been introduced to Ben-Gurion by his mother, who was an executive with Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America. Working in New York City, he helped to buy surplus warships for the Haganah s clandestine sealift that brought Holocaust survivors from Europe to Palestine.

In early 1948 Ben-Gurion called the 25-year-old Shulman to Israel to set up an academy to train officers and NCOs to man ships of Israel s fledgling navy, which at that point only had the refugee vessels.

Beginning with almost no assets, within three months, now-Kvarnit (Commander) Shulman took the Israeli squadron into action against enemy ships, and even against one vessel fighting with Israeli forces. After Israel won its independence most of the 1,200 American and Canadian volunteers went home. Shulman, with his wife and infant son, remained in Israel, settling in Haifa, which would be their home for the next forty years.

After Shulman died in 1994, a stained glass window was dedicated in his memory at the U.S. Naval Academy’s new Uriah P. Levy Chapel.

Throughout World War II in Europe, all serving overseas were treated to the radio broadcasts of “Axis Sally,” an American who broadcast continuous appealing propaganda over German radio.  She was the American voice of Nazi Germany and her name was Mildred Gillars.  Author Lucas, who has researched and documented  Gillar’s career, relates the life and times of this infamous broadcaster, detailing in particular her relationship with Hitler’s Nazi regime and her subsequent trial for treason after the war.

Michael G. Kesler, Ph.D.
