Michael Henry’s notes on Adobe InDesign

8:30am: Arrived to class.

Because I missed yesterday I need to do a make-up project. Instructor will provide the details tomorrow.

8:45am: Class started.

Lab day to rework as well as finish projects.

12:30pm: Class over. Last day of class. Tomorrow starts InDesign II, we’ll be using the same book - Adobe InDesign CS3 Classroom in a Book.

Completed projects:

Project 1 - the movie poster. I like how it came out, but the way I stylized the face didn’t go over well. The typography used for the poster was so basic, but it was a little time consuming. I also changed the movie’s tag line from “His whole life was a million-to-one shot.” to whats on the poster below. Only did that to meet the guidelines of the project. The graphics and text I pulled from the web. Examples below are provided and used for Educational Purposes.

Project 2 - Artwalk Easthampton Flyer

I don’t know how I feel about this flyer. The website didn’t offer much inspiration and I see there is a typo in the graphic below (the right side walk doesn’t have an S). I picked the artwork of a friend of mine did the artwalk once or twice. I grabbed her painting and made sure to put it on. The graphics and text I pulled from the website. Examples below are provided and used for Educational Purposes.

Project 3 - TapestryHealth Brochure

The folds were setup so when you open the cover the left flap talks about the Women’s Health Network and the ride side tells who is eligible to receive services. The graphics and text I pulled from the website. Examples below are provided and used for Educational Purposes.

Getting Started
- Managing fonts
- Finding and changing a missing font: Type > Find Font…

Creating and entering text
- Creating a headline and applying a style

Vertically aligning text
- Object > Text frame options

Flowing text
- Flowing text manually

Working with styles
- Appling a style

Flowing text automatically
- Holding down the shift key lets you auto flow text
- Resizing a text frame
- Adding a column break: type > insert break character > column break

Adding a jump line page number
- Changing horizontal and vertical text alignment

Using semi-auto flow to place text frames
- Instead of shift key, hold down ALT key

Changing the number of columns on a page

Loading styles from another document
- Paragraph Styles panel menu > Load Paragraph Stles

Flowing text into an existing frame

Finding and changing
- Finding text and changing formatting

Checking the spelling of a story

Adding words to a dictionary
- Adding words to a document-specific dictionary

Checking spelling dynamically

Automatically correcting misspelled words

Drag and drop text editing

Using the Story Editor

10:30am: Lab time.

Finished my Movie Poster project. In my notes yesterday I noted that I picked Rocky. Why? It’s one of my top 10 favorite movies. (I say that, but I don’t think I could name another 9).

I did a Google Image search for the original movie posters.

One of the requirements was the use of the production information. I typeset the info to match the original poster I found.

The other big requirement was the use of two tag lines. I know it’s a double Oscar winning film, but using that info didn’t fit the design I had in mind. So I split the original tag line: ““His whole life was a million-to-one shot.” into “His whole life he wanted a shot.” and “The one he got was a million-to-one.”

The wording choice isn’t sophisticated, but it fits.

Used these fonts: Arial Black Regular, Arial Narrow, Arial Regular, Arno Pro Bold, Times New Roman.

I think the original posters used Helvetica, but I don’t own Helvetica - yet.

Next project: Artwalk Easthampton “Call to Artists” Flyer, due tomorrow.

12:30pm: Class over.
