A little weekend project I fit in around AFEST 2011 – I don’t know about you, but I’d quite like a sushinobi t-shirt around about now.

HACK – 24 HOUR ART CREATION

Our game idea consisted of a lifeguard rescuing troubled swimmers by throwing in a life preserver (ring) to pull them to safety back to shore. I quickly requested to change the life preserver to octopi and insanity prevailed.

This was a completely different approach to art generation, unlike what I’ve done before. I kept the art fairly clean – with a cut out shape style meant I could iterate and re-use assets fairly quickly.

This was also intentional for when it came to the animation stages. This is apparent mainly in the boss creation as I had planned for the animation to be possibly through code, with repetition of art assets and moving/scaling of simple parts to create emotion/life.

Here’s a sample of the work I’ve been doing outside of day work at Tag.

Returning to the model from our Dare game Quick As Thieves – I’m using the redesign concept as a reference to refine and remodel the character. Not quite content with the proportions on this one yet – nudging it ever so closer to the concept though.

Lady in Air rough speedpaint – drawn in the early hours when I couldn’t sleep. I hope to get stuck into more interesting things this coming weekend.

Edging closer to the idea, nudging my way toward capturing what I first saw. Horrible first rendition paves the way to new insights. Don’t hide your mistakes, you are only distancing yourself from the one’s who can lend you the strength to surpass them.

Its late, I’d like to continue to work on this but this is where I’m leaving it for the night.

So, on my way to work this morning my brain piped up and said, ‘Hey you, scruffy!’ and I sauntered on bewildered. I almost tripped on a curb upon which it remarked, ‘You’ve never drawn the Hulk before, give it a spin.’

I took a few thoughtful moments to wonder what kind of spin I could possibly extract from plethora of options. Smashing, busting up parties, throwing shit, killing tanks whereupon my brain said, ‘Make him contemplative. A contemplative Hulk. DO EET!’

So again, a few stolen minutes at the end of lunch and I scrubbed up a passable attempt. I promptly dragged it home to slather it with more time and attention and ended up with this.

With his face all twisted up and wrong… I’ve learned what I didn’t want to do with the idea, and practiced some. So mistakes all bundled up and fresh in mind, I’m going to bash on and see what else I can throw together.

I’ve begun work on an indie game called Zomble Bee, with the guys at +AsDesignedGames – a small group based in Dundee - here’s a selection of character concept artwork for potential Zombees.

Some of these I played around with each stylistically to see where they led. Trying to keep them brief to convey the idea quickly.

In other news, I really need to calibrate my monitors – its freaking me out how inaccurate they might be. Any potential help with that would be awesome.

I’ve been attending to some freelance graphic design work, for Bowen Health Kelso and Allure Beauty. Here’s a selection of silhouette type logos I created for Allure.

I found an interesting way to mimic Mucha style hair rendering, and I’m tempted to produce a painting piece in a similar style.

I’ve been working on a low poly model titled ‘Monk’ over the weekend (Thurs-Saturday). The intent is to use him for a 3rd person action/adventure demo to test in-game animation sets, potentially in UDK or otherwise.

Next Level Dundee 2010

Next Level Dundee 2010, marks my second involvement in the 5 day event, where teams of 5 or so are tasked with the challenge to create some kind of digital media product within that timeframe. The brief was 'THE ELEMENTS'.

As Team A, we created a short animation depicting a deathrow inmate attempting to smoke his last meal, an almost empty pack of cigarettes, against the elements. A great bunch of people to work with!
