Setting off with the police

Next week Metropolis hits the road with the police. Our correspondent in Brazil went out to look for drug bosses in the favela's of Rio together with the fearless Elite Special Forces. And in Pakistan we follow the singing traffic-cop Wazir for one day. He is one of the many corrupt cops in Karachi.

"If everyone bribes, then why should I feel guilty?" Wazir says after he asked a car driver without a licence to pay some rupees. With this money he can buy a cup of tea. Wazir is one of the many cops in Pakistan who has to bribe to supplement his low salary. "Our highest officer even obligates it, because he shares the profit. So we have to." This is Wazir's excuse for his impopulairity with the inhabitants of Karachi.

With the upcoming World Cup, the Brazilian government tries to put the favela's of Rio in order. Therefore the cops of the heavily armed Elite Special Fores BOPE are looking for drugs, and drug dealers in in the slums. The well trained and heavily armed officers set off. "We are going to retake an area. Until recently many of Rio's favela's were dominated by drug dealers." BOPE officer Germano explains. "I've shoot someone before, in this work it's difficult not to use any action." He claims calmly.

Completely against all traditions, she is the boss at home and her husband Mushtaq does the household. Next week Metropolis will make a tour along liberated women, and men under the thumb.

Shehla has nothing to complain. While her husband Mushtaq goes for shopping, changes dirty diapers and scrubs toilets, she stays in bed untill 12:00 noon. Shehla is a singer and often performs in the evening to earn money for her family. A very special family situation in the Swat Valley, on the border with Afghanistan. Our local correspondent Mudassar doesn't understand how the man of the family can deal with his independent wife.

Josephine from Ouagadougou puts on her blue overalls of the bike mechanic every day. She can keep standing in the men's world of fine mechanics. "I am the first female motorcycle mechanic from Burkina Faso," Josephine says proudly.

Armed with posters, Gor from Armenia proclaims on the streets that women should cover their belly buttons and shouldn't wear short skirts. Gor thinks this kind of emancipation is something bad, and claims that the traditional Armenia must be maintained.

Next week, Metropolis is looking for the most coveted piece of metal on earth: Gold. We dive into the world of gold fools and gold prospectors, from dirty sewers in Pakistan to a beauty salon in South Korea.

Dan is looking for tiny grains of gold in California. He claims to relive the gold rush. It's a hard job, the proceeds are often disappointing and he's doing it all by himself, accompanied by his dogs. "I've had partners, but they didn't work as hard as I do, or they were thiefs. Gold makes people greedy, " he explains.

Because when you do it right, you can earn a lot. Like Danish from Pakistan. He manages the disposal of the gold market in Karachi, which produces good revenues. He has many young paupers employed who seek in waste and smelly sewers from the goldsmiths for small pieces of gold for their chief.

Nu Guem from South Korea lubricates the gold rather on her face. A gold treatment cleans her skin and keeps her face beautifully pale.

Topo frequently looses himself in this sensual dance. In South Africa, Pele has found the tight rithmes of the Pantsula-dance to get him off the streets. His dancing group even obtains international recognition.

Even though baby Ivo from New York is 1,5 and quite a bit too young to be a proffesional dancer, he manages to choreograph a dance. When his mother Alexandra turns on the music, Ivo starts dancing and the dancers follow him step by step. An exeptional dance is getting shape.

Pele from South-Africa used to steal a BMW-car or rob someone every once in a while. But nowadays he has found the tight rithmes of the Pantsula-dance to get him off the streets. In his township Orange Farm close to Johannesburg, criminality is lurking, but because of his buzy trainingschedule Pele has something better to do now than stealing. His dancegroup even gets international fame and it's bringing some money in. "Dancing is the most important reason for me to stop stealing. When I focus on dancing, I might be able to buy my own house and car", says Pele.
