There is so much that went on this week that was important:

Macaulay Culkin turned 30 (you’re old) (that was last week, I’m lazy, though)

It was national “902010″ day on Thursday when the date was 09.02.10 (no seriously, you’re old)

There was a new Between Two Ferns, which is the best programming on the internet, ever, multiplied by ever plus three.

The Arcade Fire and Google made a baby and it’s better looking than Shiloh Jolie-Pitt. (we’ll get to that)

With that, let’s get to some great ways to waste your life away on the internet on a Friday.

Here’s the crap we liked on the internet this week.

Brendan Gahan (@BrendanGahan): Atormenta

“I wish I had the patience to create something this beautiful, but I’ve got the attention span of a two year old.”

Ryan Lee (@owlsquid): Power Laces Prototype

iPads look like total bullsh*t compared to this. I would pay $600 dollars for this, and the 3g service is probably better than AT&T’s. NERD TALK.

Gino Click (@ginobot): Brenda & David Dance on 90210

“In honor of the date 90210, which won’t occur for another hundred years. Also, do any left handed guitar players want to start a creepy single guitar band?”

Shepard Wallace (@regularshep): Mommy & Daddy Song

If you are to believe these posts as the only browsing history of Shepard Wallace, one could presuppose that he only watches:

1) Videos that are auto-tuned.

2) Videos that are from the zoo.

And actually? I’m totally okay with that.

Elijah Bilotta (@frodoBKK): The Wilderness Downtown

“This the best thing that has ever happened to the internet. Because of it I learned how to use iTunes so I could actually pay money for the song in it. Thank you, Arcade Fire. i hope every other band follows in your footsteps.”

Natira Suchoknand: Humboldt Penguins Chasing a Butterfly

This makes me so happy I feel awkward. I don’t know what to say, even. I mean, I feel like an eight year old made up this video.

Drew Hoolhorst (@drewber): Dancing Merengue Dog

I can’t take care of myself that well, let alone own a dog and take care of it, let alone TEACH IT TO DANCE BETTER THAN I CAN.

It’s ridiculous. But c’mon. Try to turn it off. It’s a dog Merengue dancing.

Here’s the best part about me selecting this. When the Apple Keynote was going on, Ryan (who sits directly next to me) was curious if I was watching it, so he looked over to my monitor and saw…this instead.

It would have almost been less embarrassing if I had been looking at porn.

See you next Friday, everyone.

My favorite part about this column I get to write weekly so far (Like how I called it a “column”? Isn’t that adorably naive?) is the part of every week where I have to ask my boss:

Drew: “Hey Jason, is it okay if I put the video on the blog where the girl talks about how she wants to..”

Jason: “No.”

Drew: “Okay.”

Because, while you can propose just about anything at Mekanism (I mean, I’ve been in a room where the idea “F*ck China” was proposed, and it was one of the, “yeah, that might work” ideas, soooo…), you still can’t really just throw up total inappropriateness on the company blog. But it’s really fun to try.

In honor of this, I’d like to at least direct you kind of maybe sort of towards a video that was sent to me, in an ACTUAL viral manner this week (I’m not saying click the link but CLICK THAT LINK). As in, a friend ACTUALLY just sent me a video randomly, a lost art in the world I live in. And the best part?

One of the guys in the video is my new co-worker, Matt Lenski.

When things like that happen, I remember how awesome my industry can actually be. I remember the core of how “viral video” got popular:

It’s a small world, and sometimes, awesome content just falls in your lap, and you know the guy in the video who plays, “Carter, the gay friend who’s a closeted straight.”

Here’s the crap we liked on the internet this week.

Brendan Gahan (@BrendanGahan): Drunk girls face-plant on to hard concrete from shopping cart

Brendan was too busy to select a video this week. So my knee jerk reaction was, “what about that video where the girl falls out a of a shopping cart?” So, that seems like a healthy reaction that this is my first idea for a “funny video”.

Ryan Lee (@owlsquid): Wheelchair Backflip

Once you get over the “I’m an asshole but that’s funny” part in the beginning where people in wheelchairs are biting it, you then realize how much better at life this person is than you. So then you feel:

a) Not that good about laughing at the biting it parts and

b) Really nonathletic.

Gino Click (@ginobot): Time Crisis – Ft. Andy Whitfield

“If you’ve ever played a shooting game, you’ll enjoy this. If I don’t show up to work on monday, it’s because I’m at the arcade still trying to beat Time Crisis.” (freddiew makes some pretty amazing videos…and his latest, Future Rock Band, is worth a look as well)

Procrastination. We all do it. Just not as well as these guys.

Lots of people may have heard about the Turkish Facebook music video but I bet no one watched it long enough to catch the last 2 minutes.
Darth Vader does Tai Chi. I don’t think much more needs to be said, other than the fact that a girl just posted a Darth Vader video. So, I’m guessing a lot of Star Wars nerds are going to ask if Natira is single now.

Hands down, this is my favorite thing I’ve seen on the internet in a very long time. I think I’ve been quoting it for 8 days straight, and it’s JUST not getting old yet.

It’s pretty funny how they came up with the idea, too. You can read about it over here.

I am not sure how I selected drunk girls falling out of a shopping cart as the first video for this post, and ended with the most adorable video of all time. What can I say. I’m both trashy and classy, all at once.

See you next Friday, everyone.

You know what’s great about this week? An advertiser ACTUALLY used Chatroulette in an innovative way.

You know why The Last Exorcism’s use of Chatroulette was genius? Because it actually used the product. It wasn’t just someone sitting there with a sign like a homeless person telling you to click a URL, how advertisers have tried to use Chatroulette before (I know you’re thinking “homeless isn’t funny, Drew”…yes it is, reader…in this instance, yes it is…). It was someone advertising through the medium, and creating an ACTUAL interactive experience. Oh, and it’s funny to also see a bunch of guys who thought they’d see boobs, and instead getting a demonic possessed girl. That’s awkward.

Here’s the crap we liked on the internet this week.

Brendan Gahan (@BrendanGahan): Indian Pole Gymnastics

My favorite part was that Brendan sent an email to everyone telling us how comfortable he was sending us this video.

I guess that’s what you do when you send people a link to click in a mass email with the subject line “Indian Pole Gymnastics.”

These guys are pretty incredible though.

Ryan Lee (@owlsquid): Animated Lego Digital Box at Downtown Disney Orlando

Considering all I ever wanted to do with my childhood was build either:

A) The Lego Gas Station

or

B) The Lego Monorail

…I’m pretty sure if I held a Lego box as a small child and a helicopter appeared out of magical nowhere land? My mind would explode. Great use of AR.

Gino Click (@ginobot): Japanese Water Bottle Jet Pack Fail

Probably the best use of Aerosmith’s “Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing”, ever. Like, Aerosmith hasn’t used it this well yet, and they are all 4,298 years old.

(*editors note: I’m sorry for saying that, Aerosmith. Permanent Vacation was my first cassette tape ever, and I totally sang the songs “Rag Doll” and “Dude Looks Like A Lady” with absolutely zero idea how inappropriate I was being. You will always be my first.)

Shepard Wallace (@regularshep): <a title=" Bed Intruder Song by Schmoyoho Arranged for Tsugaru Shamisen!
In honor of the Brothers Gregory crackin’ the Billboard Hot 100, here’s this week’s edition of “wow there are a LOT of people out there who are just substantially more talented than you.”

Elijah Bilotta (@frodoBKK): Sorry Sorry Super Junior 슈 퍼주니어3집 (dance cover) version Thailand Tourist Police Division

“If someone created a program that scanned your tweets and created a video this is what mine would look like.”

I don’t even know what that means, Elijah. But it’s funny, because you just consistently are.

Natira Suchoknand: Little girl saying “WHATEVERR”

Man. Cats doing stupid crap and kids saying funny things. When is that ever not funny.

(Ladies and gentlemen, the internet! Summed up in a sentence!)

Mia Andersen: Unsuck It

Mia is a Production Coordinator here at Mekanism. A non “total f&$king nerd” who works here, if you will. I thought we’d have one of those people contribute.

We recently spoke about how boys are the only people who like viral videos, so I asked her to give me something that wasn’t a viral video. And she unearthed this effing gem.

I mean. Just put in any word that you probably have to type in emails all day long if you work in advertising.

Sorry to everyone’s boss. I just killed productivity for the entire day.

And I’m pretty sure this sums up my feelings on Snoop Dogg, just in a lot of ways. You’re amazing, Snoop. You’re amazing. But Martha? Really, Snoop?

See you next Friday, everyone.

Michael Langan is making very pretty things again. Are you paying attention?

To promote their new website that lets you personalize cases for your iPhone or Blackberry, Case-Mate let Langan run wild and create a gorgeous, visually stunning spot that uses surreal metaphors for the imakemycase.com design interface to demonstrate the power of the application.

If it isn’t entirely clear, I took that last sentence from a release. You know why? It sounded incredibly smart, kind of like Michael.

If your mind didn’t just explode, he also made a hilarious spot about life with steel wool hands. Random, you say? Ha! We say it simply kills two birds with one stone: it discusses how it would kind of suck to have steel wool hands while also cleverly talking about how fingerprints and glare on a cell phone aren’t fun. And those are two birds people have been throwing stones at for a very long time, and they usually only hit one.

You can check out these and the other spots Michael made over on the Case-Mate YouTube channel. And if you’d like to customize your own case, go to imakemycase.com.

Nice work, Michael. It’s not often that someone says, “Hey, have you seen that spot with the floating pseudo-diety? Yeah, it was after the one where the nipple gets ripped off by the steel wool hands!”

And that’s why we love you.

This week saw a few great memes go around.

1) An attractive girl fake quit her fake job, brought to you by The Chive!

2) A Jet Blue attendant quit his job and may be the only person who ever gets to ride the “oh my god we’re gonna die” slide on the side of the plane in an extremely fun manner.

Both of them proved one thing: people won’t really do anything anymore unless it will make them famous on the internet.

It’s the culture now. To tell you the truth, I’m not sure how much longer American Idol will last, really, because that crap is on television. See how I called it ‘Television’ and not ‘TV’? That’s because ‘TV’ is a nickname and nicknames are for friends and Television is NOOOO FRIEND OF MINE.

Point is, it was fascinating to see yet another week where the big TV corp’s were well behind reporting the things people were talking about. Because places like TechCrunch and Mashable and “Fill in the Blank Nerd Rag” all had them first.

Seems like this internet thing is gonna be big after all, eh?

Rant over.

Here’s the crap we liked on the internet this week.

Brendan Gahan (@BrendanGahan): Me And My Shark

Great White caught on camera, just circling around. I don’t know how this video doesn’t involve more violent screaming and crying and peeing of pants.

Ryan Lee (@owlsquid): Man Jumps Out Of Helicopter to Catch Fish

A man, somehow, ACTUALLY one-ups Bear Gryls. So the next time you think you’ve achieved anything in life, realize that there are people that know how to time jumping out of a helicpoter to catch gigantic fish. Just sayin.

Gino Click (@ginobot): <a title="MMrrrarrr. Nrmmrmrbrbrrr arrrrwwrrrrrr!

“MMrrrarrr. Nrmmrmrbrbrrr arrrrwwrrrrrr! Mrmmr brbr mr ramrmmrmrmrmrmrr hrurrrrawwrrrrrrr.”

(This is what Gino told me to write. It’s actually kind of interesting to see how people try to phonetically spell out Chewbacca talk.)

Shepard Wallace (@regularshep): cows & cows & cows

To be fair, we told Shep he couldn’t post the inappropriate video he wanted to. So, like we all do in this industry, he went back to videos of an animal doing something like dancing or making a weird noise. Gotta love our generation.

Elijah Bilotta (@frodoBKK): Surfer Interview

I want to know this person. I want him to commentate every little thing we do together. I want to go to the movies with him and have him explain what it was like when I put the red vine in my coke. And what it was like when he got out of his chair. Think about that. Think about if you took this man through a car wash. No, seriously. Just let that sink in for a minute.

Natira Suchoknand: 80′s Commercials

Oh 80′s advertising. You’re so magically ridiculous. I miss you so much it hurts.

If you have never watched a LARP (live action role playing) video, this should be your first.

If you can honestly watch this and not randomly yell LIGHTNING BOLT! and SLEEP! for the next six months, you win.

Also, is it me? Or does the guy who gets to yell “death” have a teeeeenie bit of an unfair advantage? I mean, call me crazy, but…seems like you’re gonna win most things when you have “infinity i’m better than everyone” super powers.

See you next Friday, everyone.

To say the partners of Mekanism are fairly large Rush fans is an aggressive understatement. I’d say at least one day a month, when it’s dead silent, Jason walks through the office singing Tom Sawyer in falsetto.

So when Rush came into town touring, I was pretty much waiting for the amazing emails that would roll in from each partner asking me to talk about Rush on the blog the next day, complete with their blurry iPhone photos that were in no way in focus from the concert.

The last one of Tommy and Ian is too fantastic for words.

I will leave the rest up to Ian Kovalik’s amazing email that was sent in. Direct quote.

It’s Shark Week! Do you know what that means? Probably not. But why does it need to mean anything. It’s about Sharks. And, presumably, a lot of people talking about them. But you know what?

Shark Week has become this odd “supermeme” once a year. People will NOT shut the eff up about sharks for a solid week straight, every year. It’s funny to see what random things social media chooses to latch on to.

So in honor of Shark Week, here’s a funny chart from Funny or Die outlining who likes Shark Week.

And hey. I’d like to think that graph is pretty much a larger metaphor for the internet, anyway.

This is the crap on the internet we liked this week.

“Because this is the best thing to hit the internet this week. Hands down.” (Honestly, if you don’t watch Eastbound & Down, you’re missing out.)

I applaud K-Swiss for making branded content that is completely and utterly NSFW. I think they looked at the competition they have (aka two other brands that’s names rhyme with “Hikey” and “Fleebock.”) and realized, what do we have to lose? So high five, K-Swiss. You did it.

The disclaimer in the beginning makes it even more exciting to watch. It’s like when someone says “no offense”: I’m pretty sure that means you’re about to say or do something offensive. And, well, that’s exciting.

Another “In Honor of Shark Week” video. Here’s to you, terrifying animal of death who is actually just misunderstood, lonely and every now and again kind of hungry.

Natira Suchoknand: Goblin Shark

This is the most terrifying thing on the planet. That’s not even a shark. It’s an alien. From a sci-fi film. It was so terrifying, we just called it a mythological name. That’s amazing. IT HAS A MOUTH INSIDE OF IT’S MOUTH. I MEAN, DOESN’T THE PREDATOR HAVE THAT??

I think this it’s just the general disappointment that the guy shows when someone ruins his ice sculpture.

And in some ways, a part of me thinks:

“You’re an ice sculptor. Seeing as this is your profession, I’m not sure you get to be critical of anything anyone else does, ever. You chose a profession that doesn’t seem to have any real purpose unless we need to decorate Russian terrorist parties in James Bond movies.”

But then I think, you know what? I appreciate what you do. Because it’s pretty, and I’m shallow. And it makes for you having a really irrational melt down, which makes for a funny video, which…well…keeps me employed.

See you next Friday, everyone.

Here at Mekanism, we have people doing “the internet” 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

That’s right. We’re like ADT, protecting your home. Think of our social media team like this video:

If you’re confused, I’m basically saying we’re like a crack squad of nerds who don’t let bad b-roll get to your computer. Ambiguous 1′s and 0′s on your walls, totally protecting you, because THAT’S WHAT RANDOM 1′S AND 0′S DO. Either that or I just really love how terribly ridiculous those commercials are and wanted to put it on here for no apparent reason. Mission accomplished.

So before I get fired for writing things that don’t make sense on the company blog…

This is the crap on the internet we liked this week.

Brendan Gahan (@BrendanGahan): Brylcreem UV Glow Gel – Indian TVC

“I decided I’d mix it up this week and go for something that’s not directly surfing related BUT I promise you still need a helmet, because this is going to blow your mind.

I spent some time living in Asia after graduating for school. I was broke and trying to ‘find myself’, and let’s just say I did some weird things for money…. really, really odd things for money. But anyway, one of those things was being an extra in and Indian Hair Gel commercial. You can see me at age 21 being Hair Gel Dude #3 at about 36-37 seconds in (I’m on the far right).”

Small, slightly to very overweight children are funny on the internet. It’s almost just a rule.

Internet Rules:

1) Content is King

2) Fat Kids are Funny. Just…always.

July was a big month for social media. Facebook hit 500 million users, and Starbucks became the first brand to hit 10 million fans. Clearly this social media thing is starting to catch on… but it got me thinking about a question that comes up often:

Can social media scale & get ‘TV’ numbers? Clearly it will.

The season premiere of Season 5 of Lost got 11.4 million views (yes, the nerds out there will argue Season 5 was lacking, but still…that’s a lot of eyeballs). To me, it’s impressive that Starbucks has the potential to reach almost as many people as a prime time TV show on ABC.

WTF.

Clearly, there is a lot of potential for brands (and individuals) to create their own new media networks. While this is hardly a new idea, it does beg the question: Where will the future content creators go? Five years from now is the next Conan O’Brien going to hawk his show to a major network in hopes of a pilot or go to a Starbucks with instant reach in the tens of millions?

Facebook and Twitter have allowed brands and individuals to work in reverse and create the TV network themselves. Isn’t Conan O’Brien essentially accidentally building “The Conan O’Brien Network” after he got the boot from a traditional media venue? The man made a Twitter account that had 300,000 followers in 24 hours.

Take that to the next level: you know that Old Spice campaign a few people talked about? It turns out the star of the brand’s viral videos caused so much of a buzz that he actually got cast in a new movie with Jennifer Aniston. If that’s not an instance of a brand’s online network launching the next big Hollywood star, I’m not really sure what is.

Plain and simple: brands are becoming the television stations of the future. People have talked about it forever. The only thing is…

We’re finally watching it happen.

It’s Friday. That means that someone is ONE week closer to trying to create a campaign that is similar yet different (re: not good) to the Old Spice campaign. And it also means that there was a bunch of crap on the internet that someone sent you over IM or in an email or told you about when you were in the kitchen eating that leftover cinnamon bun from when we had clients in and it already had a bite in it and this is totally hypothetical.

We have a new addition to our social media team this week. Meet Natira Suchoknand. Please judge her for not having a twitter account. I know I just did.

This is the crap on the internet we liked this week.

Brendan Gahan (@BrendanGahan): Tarp Surfing

Not sure if you’ve picked up on it yet, but Brendan likes surfing. I boldly predict his next pick is surfing as well.

Ryan Lee (@owlsquid): 90 Seconds of Segway Crashes

Ryan wins the award for picking the funniest video this week. This is the best thing I’ve seen in 2011 and 2014. I’m just gonna call it and say this wins.

Gino Click (@ginobot): 35mm

“Pay attention. There are supposedly 35 subtle movie references here. But, sadly, no dancing turtles.”

Shepard Wallace (@regularshep): Lyrebird

“This guy is more talented than most people I know. Of course, most people I know aren’t named, ‘Superb’.”

Elijah Bilotta (@frodoBKK): Buy You A Drank Cover

“I’m sticking with music this week. I wasn’t able to get behind the rest of his work but I’ve had this “Buy you a drank” cover on repeat for a couple of days now.”

Natira Suchoknand: Kleptones – Come Again

Natira doesn’t get any witty commentary until she gets a Twitter account.

Drew Hoolhorst (@drewber): Big Bucks: The Press Your Luck Scandal (Part 6/11)

I basically think Press Your Luck is the greatest television show of all time. It’s like the red starburst of game shows.

So when I found out this week that someone gamed it. AND THEN found out that someone made a 9,000 hour long overly-wrought documentary piece about it. AND THEN found out that it had slow motion shots in it..I essentially lost it. If you want to be depressed, watch part 11 of the series. Spoiler Alert: he presses his luck….IN LIFE.

That’s all for this week. Yes, I get to write more about mine than anyone else. I’m selfish and i’m the one writing it. Bam. That just happened.

See you next Friday.

I spent the last couple of years living outside the US so I had the pleasure of being entertained by a variety of ad campaigns that ranged from truly awesome to “oh no you didn’t!” So in an attempt to make the advertising world a better place with fewer borders, I’m going to share international campaigns that spark my fancy every so often. Our first stop takes us to a little village called London, England.

I found this campaign browsing around adsoftheworld.com. It combines online and mobile with an offline “interactive installation.” Nokia built a signpost arrow suspended from a crane 150 feet in the air in the middle of London. The crane could rotate a full 360 degrees to point in the direction of a location that people sent to it via their phone or from the Nokia OVI Maps website. Webcams were also used to stream video of the crane directly to nokia.com so that anyone, anywhere could participate.

Despite having the crane offline and only at one location, the mobile and online integrations are what make it so impressive. While I’m sure it would have been really cool to be in London and control the crane in person the fact that I could do it online and watch it from a webcam is still rewarding enough to make me excited about it.

Props go to Farfar for helping Nokia make their navigation services about as fun as navigation services can be.

Hi Internet. It’s Mekanism. How have you been? We’re good.

So we have a social media team here. Our job is to know the internet better than you, so if you ever want to hire us, we can say, “we know the internet better than you.” You can imagine, then, that working on the social media strategy team is phenomenal. Because the internet is kind of like a creepy hoarder’s house, and we get to sort through all of their creepy rooms finding the gems.

Starting today, we’re going to give you a weekly dose of all of the crap on the internet we like. Little things we’ve stumbled on that are either:

- Funny.

- Weird.

- Brilliant.

- Creepy.

- A cornucopia of all of these qualities, which is really just an excuse to use the word “cornucopia”

It’ll be like Oprah’s Favorite Things. Except Oprah will have no affiliation, and it will probably involve more dancing animals and nut shots. Welcome to Mekanism: that’s pretty par for the course.

So without further ado, here are our team members selections of crap we liked on the internet this week. Feel free to share your own. We will probably see whatever you write, retweet it back out and give you absolutely zero credit for it.

Brendan Gahan (@BrendanGahan): LINO

Brendan wants you to, “put your helmet on, because this thing is going to make your brain explode.”

For the record: Brendan makes this statement at least twice a day. He believes that everything is going to blow your mind. I’m pretty sure he says it about things that are not, in fact, going to blow your mind. This is a fair one, though.

Apparently, you can actually make a living putting all of your heart and soul into surviving off of beer and cereal (touché, everyone!).

We are very proud to announce that we walked away from the 2010 Cannes International Advertising Festival with 2 lions, a shortlisted director, and another director being selected for the Saatchi New Director’s Showcase reel.

The Golden Grahams Golden Grant, a project we teamed up with McCann Erickson NY for, walked away with a Media Lion for Best Research and a Bronze Cyber Lion. Which, you know, was enough to want to go spend too much at a bar for in celebration.

But the good news kept on coming, as Malcolm Murray was shortlisted for a Film Craft Lion for direction on the Stella Artois short “Up There” and Michael Langan was selected for the Sattchi New Director’s Showcase. We imagine this is why Roberto Benigni made an ass of himself at the Oscar’s:

Because it’s really really great to be honored with so many other talented people.

We’d like to thank France for getting about three members of Mekanism too drunk on a few nights (JUST A RUMOR) and we’d like to thank everyone we worked with on these projects, as we’re proud to have worked on such great stuff.

So eat some Golden Grahams and drink a Stella Artois. That’s an award winning meal right there. Don’t let ‘em tell you otherwise.

Also: if you are coming from twitter and presumably want to talk about that Fast Company thing we’re doing? Feel free to drop us a line. We’re happy to have you swear at us or invite us out to dinner. Either way, we’re okay with that.

Yes. That was a shameless plug. Deal with it. This is the internet.

Malcolm Murray (we’ve talked about him a few times, so sorry to bring him up again…proud parents, you know?) will be presenting his first feature-length documentary, “Camera, Camera” in competition at the Los Angeles Film Festival this month. An east coast premiere will follow immediately afterwards at the AFI-Discovery Channel Silverdocs Documentary Festival outside of D.C.

“Camera, Camera” explores the idealized, beautiful, and sometimes treacherous world of Laos from the perspective of the country’s most prolific documentarians – Western tourists with digital cameras. The film, Murray’s directorial debut, was written and features interviews by journalist and author Michael Meyer and was produced by The New York Times staff photographer Josh Haner.

To put it in layman’s terms: it’s a really good looking film that is really f*%*ing interesting.

Shoot Magazine did a lovely write up and called Malcolm a “director set to emerge.” We agree. But we’ve made that fairly clear.

The doc will be one of ten full length feature films that will be in competition in the category.

Best of luck, Malcolm.
