Megastar Mammootty has been having a torrid time this year after the colossal failure of Drona and Thilakan’s wild accusations against him.

Mammootty the cool guy that he is, did not get into a slanging match with Thilakan, though the veteran actor tried to needle him unnecessarily. Now leaving all that behind, Mammootty is going to take a one month break, where he will just chill out. He wants to keep his holiday plans under the wrap.

The star is pinning a lot of hope on his two summer releases. B Unnikrishnan directed Pramani will release first on March 26. The film is said to have shaped out well and after a long time you can see Mammootty doing a role with negative shades.

Five weeks later his multi starrer Pokkiri Raja is scheduled for release on April 30. It is a mass action film with Prithviraj and Shriya doing the supporting roles. Both these films are sure to work big time at the box-office.

The dubbed Telugu version of Malayalam superstar Mammootty's most stylish movie Big B(2007), directed by Amal Neerad with Mamta Mohandas as heroine, will grace screens across Andhra Pradesh on March 19. Sri Varalakshmi Narasimha Productions is releasing the film in Telugu.

Produced by Shahul Hameed Marikar and Anto Joseph, the film has Mammootty playing the role of mafia don in the backdrop of Mumbai. Tamil actor Pasupathy plays the role of a police officer.

Also in the cast are Manoj K. Jayan, Nafisa Ali, Bala, Sumit Naval, Pasupathy, Sherveer Vakil, Lena and Vinayakan. Music is composed by Alphons, cinematography by Sameer Tahir and editing by Vivek Harshan.

Mamta Mohandas opposite Mammootty in 'Ganapathi'

Seems like Mamta Mohandas is on a royal ride these days. Hardly had she completed Sathyan Anthikkad's fiftieth film in which she has been cast opposite Jayaram, Mamta has secured for herself yet another plum project.

The actress would be seen as Mammootty's heroine in the mega star's upcoming film 'Ganapathi' to be directed by V M Vinu.

Mamta had practically disappeared from the scene after her highly controversial appearance in the film 'Lanka'. She went on to act in several other South Indian films, and was even rumored to be making an entry into Bollywood that never happened. She even ventured into playback singing and her song 'Daddy Mummy..' from 'Villu' has remained a chart buster for almost an year now.

She made a comeback to Malayalam films last year through 'Passenger'. And now, with the Sathyan Anthikkad film and V N Vinu film in her kitty, Mamta seems all set to stay on in Malluwood for a while.

Mammootty seeks end to Thilakan controversy

Breaking his silence on the controversy in the Malayalam film industry surrounding veteran actor Thilakan, actor Mammootty has said the entire episode was pointless and uncalled for. The Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) did not want the controversy to go on.

Talking to the media on the location of his latest movie, ‘Pokkiriraja’ at Muhamma near here on Saturday, Mr. Mammootty said AMMA was ending the public discussion and the “media controversy” on the issue and that the differences of opinion would be sorted out within the AMMA. The whole episode was over “absolutely nothing” and part of a “shadow war” by vested interests, he said.

“I have no issues at all with Mr. Thilakan, and there is no question of any non-cooperation with him. Somebody has misled him,” Mr. Mammootty said, stating that he was not worried about the reported statements of Mr. Thilakan about him.

“I am ready to act with him, if he is ready to act with me,” he said.

“However, a senior artiste like Mr. Thilakan should sort out through talks whatever issues he has within the association, which is a big family. In fact, he should be an elder brother to all of us and guide us when we are wrong. But when he stands away from AMMA and criticises us, that hurts,” he said.

Mr. Mammootty also said that statements made by orator-critic Sukumar Azhikode were unwarranted.

“He is a great writer and I have a lot of respect for him. In fact he had very nice words about me when he released a book on me recently. But being a cultural leader in the society, he should stand by truth and justice. His statements on Mohanlal’s personal issues are totally baseless and unfair. I have known Mohanlal for the last 30 years and I very well know that the statement is wrong. It is also very upsetting,” he said.

On the reported personal attacks by Mr. Azhikode and Mr. Thilakan, Mr. Mammootty said he never went about saying that he was an actor par excellence. He had confidence that he could act and there was no need to go about announcing that. Make-up and playing younger characters were part of cinema, and actors like him and Mr. Mohanlal were not continuing their onscreen persona in real life, he added.

Veteran superstar Mammootty has declined to comment on the controversy triggered by the outburst of thespian Thilakan.

Mammootty, talking to IANS over phone, said: ‘I will not say anything. What is there to be said?’ He was speaking from the sets of his latest film ‘Pokiriraja’.

Actor Thilakan is currently facing the heat from various film bodies, including the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), for his utterances against film organisations in the state.

Discussing his films, including his latest release ‘Dhrona’, which has not done as expected, the superstar said: ‘See, it was an excellent subject, but somehow it has not come out well. Mind you, this is the way films are. You win some, you lose some. When there is a setback you go back to the basics, and that is precisely what I do, and fine-tune myself for the next film.’

Speaking about his next project, Mammootty said it would be the directorial debut of veteran character and comedy artiste Jagdeesh.

‘I am told that the name of the film is going to be ‘Amar Akbar Antony’, but don’t mistake it for the yesteryears’ Hindi film. It is a love story and I play the role of a technocrat. I heard the story and am yet to see the script,’ added Mammootty.

The year 2009, was very good for Mammootty with eight releases and a variety of roles. He also received an honorary doctorate from the Kerala University.

However, 2010 appears to have got off on a wrong note with ‘Dhrona’ bombing at the box office and the Thilakan controversy adding to troubles. At the moment, the AMMA and the other film bodies are strongly behind Mammootty.

Mammootty is a three-time national award winner and into his third decade in the industry.

Veteran Malayalam actor Thilakan had criticised film organisations for denying him an opportunity to act in the new film ‘Christian Brothers’.

Prabhu in Mammootty’s Pramani!

Tamil actor Prabhu was last week in Kochi doing a cameo in Mammootty’s B Unnikrishnan directed Pramani.

The film has Sneha has the heroine with Fazil’s son Fahad playing an important role.

Says Prabhu: “Yes I’m doing a cameo role in Pramani, as it gave me an opportunity to do a film with Mammootty. I think Mammooka is one of the finest actors in the country and it’s an honour to do a film with him. He is also a great fan of Appa (the legendary Sivaji Ganeshan).”

Prabhu says he had great time shooting for the film in the backwaters of Kerala. On one of the days Mammootty took him home and he had one of the “finest Kerala Sappad (feast)”. Pramani is scheduled to release on March 19.

Vidya Balan’s Malayalam debut

Vidya Balan, who is currently being appreciated greatly for her performance in ‘Ishqiya’, will be seen in a Malayalam film soon.

She will be debuting in Malayalam with the film, ‘Mathilukalkkappuram’, opposite Mammootty. It will be directed by Prasad and will continue with Basheer’s story, i.e., it will take off from where ‘Adoor’ finished.

Ravi K Chandran will be the cameraman while the sound direction will be done by Resul Pookutty. Mammootty’s production company, ‘Playhouse’, will produce the film.

Cochin Haneefa loved to make us laugh

The guffaw shook his whole frame as the talk took us to interesting situations that a Muslim artiste faces during the month of fasting. “Acting in feast scenes is the biggest challenge during fast days. You roll a huge ball of boiled rice mixed with a range of curries and bring it close to your open mouth before the director cuts that scene. The next one is a close-up of facial expressions reflecting the whole gamut of taste. They make you do that again and again as you chew and relish an imaginary menu. And burping on an empty stomach is the most difficult scene to act…” the last words were barely audible as they were mercilessly engulfed in another wave of laughter that filled the room and the minds of his friends who sat listening like kids around a storyteller.

“At times, there are numerous retakes. And each time you fill your hands with rice, it is a tussle between mind and body. I don’t think anyone other than Muslim actors faces this interesting dilemma. Isn’t that so?’’ he asked Mammootty, as he fought another bout of laughter. “True, very true,” said Mammootty to those of us who had gone to his room to invite the star to inaugurate an Express event.
It all began when Mammootty said he wanted to be excused for five minutes during the inaugural to break his fast. Haneefa took this simple everyday situation to knit some memorable moments for us.

“Then there are situations where you don the role of a Christian farmer or a Hindu vendor. At Magrib, you proceed to break your fast in the same attire. Isn’t that a perfect photo-op for a poster on secularism?’’ he asked even as he rewound and replayed many such instances for us.

During the month of Ramzan, the support crew is always ready with dates and tender coconut water. That is the normal practice. Everyone on the set joins in and shares the dates. “The pre-Ramzan schedules are real hectic as work on the finishing touches is on to ensure that the movie is released on the eve of the festival day. But I do enjoy playing the role of a glutton. And little does the audience realise that this poor man is running on an empty stomach to give them some light moments,” he gestured adieu as the words faded into the echoes of another roar of laughter that scares a lingering ribbon of cigarette smoke. “There are more stories to tell, but later,” Haneefa said as he walked up to the door with Mammootty to see us off. That broad grin flashed once more before the heavy door closed between us. Forever, as it happens, for we never met after that.

Dhrona 2010 Movie Review

Drona ,the most awaiting movie of Superstar Mammootty. The movie just average and its stories is not acceptable.It has to be accepted that Drona is one of the best attempts by Shaji Kailas in recent times. This is unlikely to work in the film's favor though, because the last few of his cinematic outings have been anything but comparable. But the director who had flashed those sparks of brilliance some years back, and who had since disappeared into the shadows is out again in Drona. The film accentuates that all is not lost and the man still has got it in him.

What is it then, that works against this film? It is a real slow starter for one, and it's quite some time before things get gripping. Even then, the kicks that it delivers are not strong enough, and there is always a sense of something seriously lacking throughout. Soon it becomes pretty evident that what is missing is a passion that sometimes makes even the most mediocre of works appear outstanding.

When it comes to the account, there are some grave lapses in continuity that absolutely flusters the viewers. The flashbacks are in abundance and are arranged in a slapdash style, and with the present and past continually intertwining, the logical string that binds them all together eventually gets severed.

Singly though, the past almost appears out of the world in Drona, and Shaji has crafted the scenes with elegance. Thankfully those technical ploys that had almost become a trademark in his films are kept to the minimum here. Ekambaram's camera slithers around like a snake, never letting spookiness out of sight. And of course Don Maax too, who with his slick editing ensures that murder and mayhem could look modish as well.

A K Sajan juggles between a gory tale of revenge and a mystic story that brims over with vedic chants and black magic. It's here that the film loses its grip; there are too many of those crooks and their henchmen to tackle and a screaming ghost to boot. It appears a bit overblown after a while, even as the script goes on with its sermons on Vastu and the mantras and the divine laws of justice. Ultimately Drona is neither the horror caper that it seeks to be nor the action thriller that sends those flickers of excitement flying. The story fails, and massively so.

There is simply no beating Mammootty as Pattazhi Madhavan; garbed in saffron dhotis and long flowing kurtas with solid Rudraksha beads strung around his neck, this strapping sage has the might to burn you down with an intense gaze. Clout is not all about muscles, the actor reiterates.

There are equally competent thespians on the other side as well; Thilakan and Manoj K Jayan match up the lead actor's performance with impressive feats of their own. And last but very certainly not the least, Dhanya Mary Varghese in a special cameo turns out to be the most gorgeous blood thirsty spirit to have roamed around on screen.

Whether you like Drona or not depends a lot on what you look forward to, on your thriller night-out. The film sags down to tedium by the final reel, and by then its too late for a reversal of its (mis)fortunes. Most of the errors that it commits are fatal, and most of its flaws terminal.

Audio launch of Yugapurushan

Audio launch function of ‘Yugapurushan’- the biographic movie about Sree Narayana Guru, was held at Dreams hotel in Kochi on Saturday. Audio was released by Mammootty by giving the first copy to Mohanlal. The multi-starred event was inaugurated by Mrs. Preethi Nateshan, wife of SNDP general secretary Sri.Vellappalli Natesan.Producer A.V.Anoop ,Biju Menon, Thalaivasal Vijay and Director Joshi were also present with the cast and crew of the movie.. ‘Yugapurushan’ is directed by Mr.R Sukumar.‘Yugapurushan’ has six songs composed by Mohan Sitara. Songs are written by Kaithapram. The film will release in theaters on 5th Feb under the banner of A V A productions.

Mammootty's new film Ganapathi

It was earlier reported that Megastar Mammootty will act in the new movie by Akku Akbar, which will be scripted by Reji Nair. That film was titled as Thappana and was one of the well expected film by the Malayalam film lovers. Unfortunately that film won't work since the director was not happy with the script.

The latest to hear is that the same script by Reji Nair will be directed by the family director, V M Vinu with Mammootty in the main lead. This new film is titled as Ganapathi, and Mammootty will be playing the role of a mahout in this new film. Mammootty is well impressed with the script that he showed interest in starting the film as early as possible.

The rest of the cast for this film is yet to be finalized and this new Malayalam film will be produced by Kala Nair, under the banner of Omkar Nedumbulli Production.

First Look: Mammootty in Pramani

This Vishu will see Mammootty in Pramani as Viswanatha Panicker, a corrupt panchayat president of Thazheppadam village.

The Malayalam film is written and directed by B Unnikrishnan. Shooting is currently underway at various locations in Kochi and Alappuzha.

Sneha plays the heroine in Pramani. Her role is that of Janaki, the panchayat secretary who exposes the corruption. Sneha has earlier played Mammootty's heroine in the hit film, Thuruppugulan. She is also the heroine in Vandematharam, which will also star Arjun as the other hero besides Mammootty. Siddique, Suresh Krishna, Fahadh, Janaradhanan and Kaviyoor Ponnamma include the rest of the cast.

Pramani is being produced by B C Joshi under the banner of Soorya Cinema.

The crew consists of camera man Shyamdutt, lyricist Girish Puthanchery and music composer M Jayachandran.

Mammootty to get Lifetime Achievement award

Veteran actor Mammootty has been named for the 'Lifetime Achievement' award for his all-round contribution to the Malayalam film industry by Malabar Chamber of Commerce.

The award was announced on the occasion of the Chamber celebrating its 80th anniversary. However, the date and day on which the awards would be presented were not announced. The MCC that came into being in 1929, presently has 1500 members and has an association of another 5000 through 50 odd affiliated organizations of traders and industrialists.

Blessy’s story for Mammootty!

Blessy who has directed some of the finest films in Malayalam with Mammootty, has now written a story for the megastar.

Blessy who last worked with Mammootty in Palunku has now written the story of his new film Kayam, which will be scripted by debutant Viju Ramachandran and directed by Sebastin who directed the star in Maya Bazaar

Mammootty agreed to do this realistic film after reading Blessy’s story about a man who was working in Dubai, had to come back to Kerala after recession set in the gulf. Back home he has to look after his two daughters who are going to a convent school and has to complete the work on his unfinished house.

In a nutshell, Blessy wants to show the plight of Lakhs of Malayalee workers who have been left high and dry by the economic turmoil in the gulf. The shoot of Kayam will start once Mammootty completes Pramani and Pokkiri Raja.

Drona release postponed!

Mammootty starts shooting ‘Pokkiri Raja’

Mammootty and Prithviraj's second film together ‘Pokkiri Raja’ will kick off its shoot at Pollachi today. The movie will have both of the stars as brothers. Scripted by Udhay Krishna-Sibi K Thomas, the movie will have Shriya Saran for the first time in Malayalam. The songs written by Kaithapram and set to music by Jassie Gift for the movie are said to be potential hits.

Mammootty earlier did a guest role in the Prithviraj movie ‘One Way Ticket’, that didn't fare well at the Box Office.

Mammootty to be 'Kaduvakkunnil Kuruvachan'

Mammootty would work with action director Ranji Panicker for a film entitled 'Kaduvakkunnil Kuruvachan'.

Mammootty plays a Christian planter in the film, that marks the coming together of the actor and director after the super hit 'Roudram'.

The new film is rumoredly a revenge drama on the lines of 'Lelam'. The heroine and the supporting cast of the film are yet to be finalised.

The shooting of 'Kaduvakkunnil Kuruvachan' is expected to start in August, and the film would be Mammootty's Christmas release.

In a ceremony steeped in tradition, the University of Kerala presented the honorary degree of Doctor of letters (D.Litt) to noted film maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, actor Mammootty and Mridangam maestro Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman at a special convocation held here on Monday.

The citation of Mr. Mammootty noted him as the star of all stars. Tracing the range of the characters he had portrayed through films, from Ponthanmada to B. R. Ambedkar, it likened his screen presence to that of Hindi filmstar Dileepkumar. The citation also noted that Mr. Mammootty was a former student of the university.

MAMMOOTTY GETS EMOTIONAL

The Malayalam film star Mammootty was recently honored with the doctorate degree. Speaking about this new honor, the actor recalled that his father advised him to opt for the science group during his school days so that he could take up medicine as a profession. However, fate had something else in store for Mammootty and the dream was never realized.

The actor, during his acceptance speech at the university, said that his father’s wish had come true today and he dedicated the doctorate in honor of his late father.

Mammootty bag Asianet film awards

Malayalam superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal reigned supreme at the popular Ujala-Asianet Malayalam film awards 2009 announced here Sunday. While Mammootty bagged the ‘Millennium actor award’, Mohanlal was named best actor for his role in “Ividam Swargamanu”.
Mammootty had more reason to cheer as his blockbuster movie “Pazhassi Raja” was adjudged as the best film. Renjith was named best director for “Paleri Manickam”, which also stars Mammootty.

The names of the awardees were announced Sunday by Asianet Television officials. The award ceremony will be held here Jan 18.

Kavya Madhavan was selected as the best actress for her role in “Banares” while Prithviraj was chosen as the Youth Icon for the year.

Mammootty as ‘John, Jaffer, Janardhanan’

Mollywood superstar Mammootty is now getting a chance to play the lead in ‘John, Jaffer Janardhanan’. Named after the big multistarrer hit of the eighties, this movie will be directed by actor Jagadheesh, who is debuting to call the shots with this movie. Mammootty will play the three different faces of the same character in this movie. To be scripted by Jagadheesh, the dialogues of the movie will be penned by Krishna Poojappura. ’John, Jafer, Janardhanan’ is expected to kick off its shoot by the mid of May.
