February 9, 1910 – August 27, 2010
Six months after her l00th birthday, May passed away to join her beloved husband, Harry A. Welch; her mother, Florence Cooke and her father, Frederick Cooke. She will be remembered with love and greatly missed by her daughter, Shirley (Paul); granddaughter, Corinna (Walter Bradley) and great granddaughter, Alisha. May was born in Kitscoty, Alberta and moved to Edmonton as a small child. May completed her schooling and went on to work for T. Eaton’s Company and the Alberta government and met and married her one and only love, Harry. May forever held dear many fond memories of her friends and co-workers and continued to always think of Edmonton as “home”. She was the proud matriarch of her small family and over the years most family celebrations were planned with “May” front and centre. She will be missed by us and her passing leaves a void in our lives, but we have many, many good memories of the times she joined us on extended trips – she was always ready to join in any adventure and never wanted to be left out of anything – even in her 100th year! Special thanks to Dr. Peter Meyer and the doctors, nurses and staff at the Jubilee Hospital who helped to make her last few days comfortable.

There will be no funeral service. The family will gather on September l8th at 3:00 p.m. in the Garden of Devotion at Hatley Memorial Gardens to witness the interment and celebrate her life, remembering all the good times that they had together.

August 19, 1913 – August 23, 2010

Fred passed away peacefully in Victoria, B.C. four days after his 97th birthday. Fred was born in Dobrota, Dalmatia, in 1913. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Hilde; his daughter Susan; his son-in law, Charles and his two grandsons, Alexander and David Volkovskis. He is lovingly remembered by many more family and friends.

Fred had a full and varied life. The only child of a university linguistics professor he was born into an old distinguished shipping family. Naturally, academics and adventure shaped his life from early years. He sailed around the world when he was only seventeen..

Fred studied in Breslau, Germany and Zagreb, Croatia. With an advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Fred conducted world-class theoretical research with Siemens in Berlin. He later moved to Vienna, Austria and led teams installing high-voltage power systems for Alpen Electrowerk. This is where he met his wife Hilde. Fred and Hilde married in Graz in 1945 and emigrated to Canada in 1949. They lived mostly in Toronto but Fred worked as a Professional Engineer throughout Canada for the Canadian General Electric, the Toronto Township Hydro and Ontario Hydro as Senior Design/Chief Engineer. They moved to Victoria in 2000 to be closer to their daughter and her family.

Fred was a devoted husband to the constant love of his life, Hilde; a wise and wonderful father to his daughter, Susan; and a very proud and loving grandfather. Fred’s brilliant wit and his charming sense of humour put a smile on the faces of everyone who knew him. He was a master story-teller with a large inventory of personal tales. He was a true renaissance man: mathematician, musician, world-class rower, artist, photographer, cook, wood-worker and philosopher. He was the proud patriarch of his family and his passing leaves a void in all our lives. However, we take strength from the courage and dignity he displayed through the hardest of times.

Special thanks to the nurses, techs and care-aides who helped to make his last few years more enjoyable.

A Prayer Service will be held at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Johnson and Vancouver Streets at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday , August 31, 2010. A Funeral Mass celebrating his life will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at Saint Andrew’s Cathedral Blanshard and View Streets in Victoria. Burial will follow at Ross Bay Cemetery.

October 24, 1923 to August 26, 2010

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our father on August 26, in Victoria. Hans left us peacefully, in the presence of his daughter and son-in-law, Christa and John Oxford. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Christel and his only brother, Adolf. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, brothers-in-law, Kurt, George and John Herzberg and their wives, Loni, Flora and Mary, respectively, as well as, six nieces and many friends. Born in Pulverholz, Germany, Hans immigrated to Canada, together with his wife and daughter, in 1952. After twelve years in Regina, the family moved to Winnipeg, where Hans co-founded Auto Haus Fort Garry. In addition to establishing a successful business, Hans pursued an active outdoor life, enjoying fishing, sailing, water skiing, downhill skiing and golf. He was a member of Southwood Golf and Country Club in Winnipeg and Royal Colwood Golf and Country Club in Victoria. After retiring to Victoria, he spent many happy hours on the water fishing. Hans is remembered by his many friends in Canada, the United States and Germany for his quiet manner and the many kindnesses and helping hands he extended when they were needed most. He is deeply loved and missed. No formal service will be held. His ashes will be scattered at sea, as he requested. Anyone wishing to honor his memory is encouraged to make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Condolences may be offered at www.mccallbros.com.
