Ronald “George” Chan (Oct 30th, 1923 – March 12th, 2010)

George was a wonderful husband to his wife Lillian and a caring father to his children Linda (Ken), Lorne and Kerry (Darlene) and a proud Grandfather to Christopher and Nicole. Son of Mr and Mrs Robert and Yee Chan Tom Shee Chan and step mother Yuen Yee, George was the oldest of 9 children – Noreen (Wally-predeceased), Gilbert (Dorothy) , James (Beverly), (Wilfred -predeceased) (Mary), Paul (May), Loretta (Ken), Alfred (Dawn) and William (Geraldine).

Born in Victoria, George attended Vic High. George, obtained his real estate diploma at UBC (F.R.I) and was the first Chinese real estate agent in Victoria. He worked at Northwestern Securities and Mayfair Realty. George had also formed a successful development company with his brothers Wilfred and William called Rowils Estates. George was an active member of the community and dedicated many volunteer hours to help his community. He was a member and past president of the Victoria Chinatown Lions Club where he dedicated a lifetime of service. He was a director of the Hoy Sun Benevolent Association. He also served as a director for the Chinatown Care Center.

George and his wife Lil were enthusiastic ballroom dancers and were able to meet a wonderful group of friends to enjoy their love of dance with. George and Lil also loved to travel and have travelled with their children to many different international countries and in recent years have loved to go on dancing cruises with their friends.

George, was an avid fisherman, and loved to go salmon fishing with his buddy, Jeff Shong. They caught many trophy salmon and had many fishing stories to tell about the ones that got away. George was a gourmet cook and loved finding new recipes to try.

Six years ago, George suffered a stroke and he was also diagnosed with the early onset of Alzheimer’s. It has been difficult the last 6 years but the family has become closer. Last year, George was fortunately able to get a placement in a home with health care professionals. His first initial placement was at Mt St. Mary’s, then to the Oak Bay Kiwanis (Alzheimer’s Ward). On behalf of the family, we would like to thank our family doctor, Dr. Lane Woodburn and the Oak Bay Kiwanis staff for the fine care that they took with George.

A Celebration of George’s life will take place in McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Johnson and Vancouver Streets, on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 10:00 am followed by interment at Royal Oak Burial Park. We would request that in lieu of flowers, donations would be made to the Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion or the Chinese Care Center.

After a brief but courageous battle with cancer, Darlene Fuhr passed away on Thursday, March 11, 2010 in Victoria, BC. By her side was her husband of 32 years, Ron Fuhr and close friend, Paula Warda. Darlene Judith Franklin was born on April 24, 1955 to parents, Alvin and Marie Franklin, of Rivers, Manitoba. Darlene lived on the family farm south of Rivers with her parents, older brother, Doug and younger brother, Donald “Joe”. She attended school and graduated from Elton Collegiate. Darlene began her work in the banking industry, which was where she would spend the bulk of her career. In 1977 she married the love of her life, Ron Fuhr, and the two settled in Brandon. They moved between Brandon and Winnipeg before eventually settling on Vancouver Island where Darlene would spend many happy years. She worked with the Bank of Montreal and retired after 28 years of dedicated service in 2006. Darlene spent many enjoyable days with her ‘banking girls’ and made several life-long friends she cherished so much. After her retirement from B.M.O., Darlene decided to keep busy by working part-time at The Market on Millstream where she thoroughly enjoyed herself. Darlene and Ron were fortunate enough to be able to go on several bus trips with friends to cities across the United States, and she was always so excited to see something new and meet people along the way. Darlene was a woman who changed the lives of those she knew, and we are all better people for knowing her. Hers was a light that shone brightly over us all, and today that light has gone out. Darlene is survived by her husband, Ron; father, Alvin; and brothers, Doug and Joe. She is predeceased by her mother, Marie. Darlene will be sadly missed by nieces, nephews and countless friends and family.

A memorial service will be held at McCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets in Victoria, BC on Friday, March 19, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. A memorial service will also be held in Brandon at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Darlene’s name can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

You are gone, but not forgotten

Your life was much too swift

We miss you but we remember

It was you that was our gift

McCall Bros. Funeral Homes of Victoria, BC: information regarding James Wishart Mainguy

Born on October 30, 1919 in Chemainus and died peacefully in the presence of family on February 26, 2010 after a brief illness. Married in 1942 he was predeceased by his wife Lorna (nee Castley) in 1996 and is survived by his children Alison (Tom) Mace, Diana (John) McMahen and his grandchildren Emily, Lorna, Thea and Joe. Following graduation from high school in Duncan, Jim attended Victoria College. He enlisted in the navy during WW II, returning to finish a degree in Economics from UBC. His education was completed with a Master’s degree in Hospital Administration from the University of Minnesota, where he was honoured for his achievement. Returning to B. C. he embarked on a civil service career, retiring as Deputy Minister of Health for B. C. in 1978. Jim will be remembered as a thoughtful, caring man who took an interest in the ideas and needs of others and was always a willing listener. He regularly attended reunions with his high school class and continued sharing his love of music through the Arion Choir and the Grandview Quartet to the end of his life. In his last few years he established a native plant garden and a memorial garden at his church. His love of nature has been passed on through his family. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him through his work, his interests and his family, of whom he was very proud. A memorial service will be held in Victoria in the near future. Donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the Arion Male Voice Choir, 612 David Street, Victoria B.C., V8T 2E1.

Born July 1, 1926 at home in Winnipeg, Manitoba, George died peacefully at home in Saanichton, BC on March 9, 2010, after a brief fight with lung cancer. Predeceased by his daughter, Donna, George leaves Marion, his wife of 59 years, their children, David (Sandi), Carol (Dave), Chris, son-in-law Ed and ten grandchildren. In the mid 1960’s George and Marion moved their young family from Winnipeg to Victoria, where he was a partner in Victoria Book and Stationery until his retirement in the early 1980’s. Becoming snowbirds, George and Marion travelled south each winter in their RV, returning in the springtime to their home at Sidney. In the mid 1990’s they moved to Arbutus Ridge where George refined his golf game. George’s good natured sense of humour will be remembered by all. His grandchildren recently shared their photos, writing and art work with him, bringing him great pleasure in his last days. George asked that there be no service and flowers are gratefully declined. Marion and the family thank you for thinking of George if you wish to donate to the BC Cancer Agency. Thank you to Dr. D. Bell, the VIHA community health nurses, Beacon homecare workers, the palliative care team and Glendora for their kindness.
