The 3rd one although strictly speaking is not about matchstick kits, it looked a bit like a matchstick model so I thought it was worthy of being included. Maybe it will inspire you to build larger models!

Le Diner Des Cons

Le Diner Des Cons (or The Dinner Game) is a 1998 comedy written and directed by Francis Veber.

Each week a group of friends get together for dinner and they have to bring an “idiot” along with them and at the end of the evening, the guests have to decide who is the biggest “idiot”.

Now you may be wondering why I am writing about a movie called Le Dine Des Cons, but in the movie, the “idiot scout”, Pierre Brochant manages to find a “gem”, François Pignon, a Finance Ministry employee whose passion is building replicas of landmarks with matchsticks.

This site is about everything connected to matchstick kits and during the film, you can see some of his matchstick models. Below in the video he shows some of the photos.

Le Diner De Cons

Brochant pretends that he want Pignon to show him and his friends his wonderful collection of models, but they only want to laugh at him.

Brochant however, hurts his back and is not able to attend the party and is stuck with Pignon all night. Of course Pignon wants to help and the scene goes from bad to worse. If you get a chance to watch it and you understand French that’s great. If not sorry, but you will have to wait for the remake which is proposed for release this year

It is rumored that Robin Williams will be in the new version.

Do You Recognize This Matchstick Ship?

One of our dear visitors (Alan Jackson) bought this ship some time ago and has since spent some time restoring it.

He knows almost nothing about the ship, which came to him in bad repair and we were wondering if anyone out there in Matchstick World recognizes or know anything about it.

Matchstick Fun Book

One of my readers recently sent me an email looking for free matchstick kit templates (Thanks Amanda) and whilst I was searching the internet I came across this book which I thought may be of interest to you all.

A New Matchstick Kits for 2010 comes from Matchstick Modeler Paul Singer.

Paul must love Manchester United as this is not the first time he has built the stadium using matches. He is building a new one because the old real stadium was redesigned with a larger capacity.

Now due to restrictions at Youtube, I can’t show you the video but if you click on the link here it will take you to the video.

It was about 5 years ago that he built the first Old Trafford ground using a reported 67,000 matches then.

Since the original matchstick kit, the north west and north east corners of the stadium have been completely redesigned and Paul just had to go about building a new copy.

Paul is a security guard who lives in Cheshire and will take about 4 months to complete it which is an amazingly quick time for something this big.

Apparently it’s about 12 square meters in size and 2 feet high. I hope this makes the players cheaper than the real ones!

It comes fully equipped with executive VIP boxes and a players tunnel.

He plans to send it to auction as he did the last model to raise money for charity and what a big heart he must have. Well done Paul you make our art proud of you.

Getting support from all different avenues, his company is paying for all the materials which is great. Thank you Advance Security UK Ltd and he is also looking for sponsors who will appear on the advertising boards within the model. So cool an idea.

The last model was signed by the whole Manchester team and then sold at auction and was bought by Peter Kenyon who previously was an executive at United.

Wooden Wall Clocks have been around for a while, but this clock (wooden indeed) is actually a matchstick clock and as we are beginning the new time of this year, I thought I would share this little gem with you as it is really cool.

By the way this is officially my first day back at work after the nice long holiday and I hope that you all had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year and that Santa brought you lots of matches. So welcome back.

There are all different wooden wall clocks, but this one must have taken some time to build. It is originally by Christiaan Postma and it is made up from about 150 individual timepieces controlling all of the timing.

The matchstick kit clock only tells the time by hour, there are no minutes, but for me it is way to interesting to be worried about the minutes although I would love to see that as well.

I think people are just so cleaver. They keep coming up with new ideas and reinventing things we already have in new and novel ways and these wooden wall clocks are no exception.

They are simply brilliant and I want one.

So although Christmas has finished I don’t mind if you rush out an buy me one of these wooden wall clocks!

HAPPY CHRISTMAS

I would like to take this moment to wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas wherever you may be and to thank you for visiting the site over the year.

It has been a very exciting year for me and right now I am reflecting over what I accomplished or did not get round to doing and I am starting to make plans for next year.

Here is a funny story that I thought I would share with you regarding matches that should not be in a place where they were. I call them Strike Anywhere Matches!

According to the Dorset Echo in the UK, prisoners from Portland have been using matchstick models to hide their naughty items inside.

Apparently one of the prisoners is a convicted drug dealer, but still managed to grow a four foot cannabis tree and told everyone that it was a tomato plant and then he decorated it as a Christmas tree.

If that wasn’t bad enough, they also started building matchstick models so they could hide items like cell phones inside them.

It was said by a prison spokesman that vigilant officers have removed everything now after confiscation!

I don’t know if they had to be too vigilant to spot a four foot tree growing!

And even the sniffer dogs didn’t notice the plant so maybe they need better dogs as well.

At least the guys would have some matches to light their stash of cannabis and have a very Happy Christmas!
