Volunteers and dogs will be in Redcar on Saturday 14th with tins for a street collection. We have taken in five dogs this week so every penny raised helps towards the care of all the dogs needing homes. Please do come and say hello and have a chat, it helps us and the dogs enjoy a fuss.

Some of you may have noticed our web site is not up to date with events, I know we have a list on the blog but please do ring me on 01287 619422 0r Margaret on 01642 488667 should you need any further information. Hopefully our new web site will be up and running soon.

Skelton v New Marske Under-11s - League Cup Round 4.

NEW Marske made the short journey to Skelton in truly atrocious weather, the referee monitoring conditions before giving the game the go ahead.

Marske started with the wind behind them, and took the game to Skelton, and using the wind to their advantage scored a couple of early goals.

Curtis Wood finished strongly for the first, and Joe Atkinson bagged the second.

Marske put Skelton under constant pressure, and even though the conditions made it very difficult, Marske continued keeping the ball on the ground before the move of the game made it 3-0.

Joe Atkinson won the ball and quickly released Morgan Corner who played in Elliot Clark. His cross was coolly passed into the net by Wood for his second.

Ebrima Camara displayed strength in bursting through for the fourth, Callum Blair finished another excellent move for the fifth before Atkinson fired his second.

Skelton had looked quite sharp on a couple of rare forays into the Marske half, but the back four defended very strongly which contributed to the half time score of 6-0.

The second half was always going to be harder, and the first five minutes crucial, but Marske kept the ball on the ground and were rewarded when Wood fired home his third after another good passing move.

The defence were far more involved in the second half, but to their credit, they all performed excellently in conditions which deteriorated as the game went on.

Then another excellent move by the forwards saw Atkinson score his third of the game.

New Marske played the game out very confidently and were rewarded with a clean sheet for their efforts, none more so than man of the match Chris Woods who defended very strongly throughout. Final score: New Marske 8 Skelton 0.

FROM strawberry teas to trips to the seaside - the 1st Marske Girls Brigade is having tons of fun as its prepares for its golden anniversary.

In February 2010, the brigade will celebrate its 50th birthday - and it hopes to do so buoyed by cash from the Gazette's Wish appeal, which shares out £30,000 to local good causes depending on the amount of token each collects.

The 1st Marske Girls Brigade began life in the old Marske Methodist Chapel on the High Street. When the chapel moved in the mid-1960s to Hummershill Lane, so did the brigade.

That's where it still meets, every Thursday night from 6pm.

Girls and boys aged five upwards are now welcome, after the old Boys Brigade folded a few years ago.

Highlights this year have included a strawberry tea, held to raise the group's profile and refresh locals, and a weekend away at Scarborough on a 'pirates' theme.

Planning is now under way to celebrate the brigade's 50th birthday in style.

Morag Gardiner first went along to the brigade when she was four and a half. Now aged 42 and a lieutenant with the group, she's urging youngsters aged five upwards in the area to come along and join in.

She said: "For those old enough, we always run an annual weekend away.

"When we meet on Thursdays, we do lots of fun activities, such as crafts, baking and games. It's more a youth club-type atmosphere, really.

"Also, three of our older girls and four of our older boys completed their Duke of Edinburgh silver award expedition. It was just after the bad floods, so they did really well.

"Our numbers are fairly low at the moment, so we'd welcome newcomers. I'm sure they'd enjoy themselves."

It's hoped to involve past members in the 50th anniversary celebrations, for which a commemorative magazine may be produced.
MARSKE United Under-15 were the hosts to Cali Boys Under-15 at the GER Stadium Marske on a blustery Sunday afternoon.

For the first 10 minutes Cali Boys put Marske under a lot of pressure without really threatening the goal.

Marske then started to get into their stride and forced a corner after seventeen minutes. Luke Pearson crossed the ball which was cleared by the defence straight back to him.

Luke Pearson then controlled the ball and fired it into the far post where Michael Graham side footed the ball into the net.

Marske continued to press forward, Max Heason-Philips released Nathan Taylor down the left wing, who ran to the by line and crossed superbly for Chris Caley to score.

Half time Marske Utd leading 2-0.

In the second half Marske continued to play well and started to control the game.

Jack Barker got hold of the ball on the right wing, turned the defender inside out and smashed the ball past the keeper.

Marske continued to control the game until the last 10 minutes when Cali Boys started to exert some pressure. The ball was crossed from the left wing to an unmarked striker who shot was saved from close range by the Marske keeper, Sam Harvey.

Final score was 3-0 to Marske Utd.

Notable performances from Marske Max Heason-Philips (Man of the Match), Nathan Taylor, Joe Corker and Lewis Jones

A ST John Ambulance base has received a long overdue facelift - giving a shot-in-the-arm to the organisation's combined Marske and Redcar unit.

The completely refurbished building, in Dundas Terrace, Marske, was officially re-dedicated during a ceremony attended by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Mark Evans.

Known as 'The Hut', the building was erected in 1970 at a cost of £2,500.

Mr Evans said the £95,000 transformation had created a bright and welcoming meeting place for SJA adult members, cadets and Badgers, as well as the local community.

He said the building had fallen into a sad state and that the refurbishment, including a new roof, had been keenly awaited.

He also praised the loyalty and patience of the local members and said he hoped the new facilities would attract new recruits as well as boost usage by the local community.

SJA chairman, Ken Home, said: "The Marske and Redcar Unit is one of our most active units and they now have a headquarters of which they can be very proud. We hope the new-look hall will breathe new life into the unit."

Local member Sue Esplin explained that due to the building work, recent SJA meetings were held in a nearby pub.

She also thanked the HSBC bank for donating £2,000 towards a defibrillator for the unit.

The World of Difference UK programme, delivered by the Vodafone Foundation, is giving 500 people the opportunity to take a two month paid placement with a UK charity of their choice. World of Difference UK is open to anyone over 18 in the UK who has the passion, drive and commitment to donate themselves to a charity. Taking part involves finding the right charity to suit interests, skills and experience and completing an online application form at vodafone.co.uk/worldofdifference by 3 November 2009.

If you're successful, the Vodafone Foundation will pay the charity you choose a total of £2,500 and you'll get the balance when tax and National Insurance have been paid. Finding the right charity is also easy, as the website has a unique online charity matchmaker, developed in consultation with the UK's leading volunteering charity, WorldWide Volunteering (WWV).

In addition, Vodafone UK will donate a new mobile phone and pre-paid credit to each of the 500 successful applicants so they can share their experiences with friends and family and inspire others to make a difference. The deadline for applications for World of Difference UK is 3 November, with the first placements beginning in January 2010.

"For people who feel passionate about a charity or cause, or for those who simply have time on their hands, Vodafone Foundation's World of Difference programme offers an ideal opportunity to help others whilst gaining valuable life and work experience," said Andrew Dunnett, Director of the Vodafone Foundation. "We've seen a huge surge of interest in UK-based charity placements, with over 127,000 Facebook fans following us on facebook.com/worldofdifference. when we launched our International programme earlier this year. World of Difference UK gives people who want to donate themselves, and get paid, the chance to put that passion into practice."

Eight UK winners from the Vodafone Foundation's World of Difference International programme have been confirmed. The winners (Nick Eastcott from Dorset, Kathryn Becher from Devon, Lucy Buck from East Sussex, Max Griffiths from London, Naomi Pendle from Bath, Zoe Vowles from London, Rebecca Webb from Southampton and Jain Reid from London) beat 1,000 applicants to work for their chosen charities overseas for 12 months, with salary and expenses paid up to £45,000.

For further information on the World of Difference programmes visit vodafone.co.uk/worldofdifference or join the World of Difference Facebook fan page facebook.com/worldofdifference.

NEW Marske Under-11A returned to league duty hosting Normanby in glorious conditions and took the game to the visitors from the start.

Elliot Clark gave Marske an early lead with a well taken goal followed quickly by a second when he finished off a long Ebrima Camara through-ball.

Camara then scored a peach of a goal, Clark setting him up on the edge of the box to finish with a ferocious drive.

Morgan Corner then got in on the act with a strong direct free kick which gave the keeper no chance before Curtis Wood wrapped up the first half scoring for Marske.

Normanby had also caused problems, and Jay Hedger in goal made two excellent saves when the Normanby forward had broken through. Half time 5-0.

Clark scored a very early sixth for Marske in the second half before the visitors pulled one back, but Marske played some lovely football and attacked at will with some lovely flowing football which resulted in Clark scoring a further three.

Callum Blair volleyed home an excellent goal from a corner through ball though Normanby also scored a second consolation goal in a very entertaining second half.

Marske rattled the woodwork on several occasions as they kept the opposing defence busy but also had to defend well as Normanby posed problems with some good counter attacking. An excellent game, some good passing play again resulting in a deserved 10-2 victory. Elliot Clark took the Man Of The Match Award for an excellent display up-front, though in truth the whole squad played very well with four substitutes also playing their part.

New Marske Under-9s defeated Teesside 8-1. Another top team performance kept New Marske at the top of the table. Mark Graham opened the scoring from the penalty spot before adding three more. Markus Sigsworth gave his mate, goalkeeper Thomas Beeforth, a day off with some strong defending.

Jacob Rigden scored another two with two cool tap-ins along side Aaran Hodgson and captain Charlie Amos defender Jack Dewer Shook the Teesside goal with a blaster against the bar.

Thank you to all collecting wish tokens,if you could take them to the bandstand and give them to Lynne or post them to me I can stick them all in the books provided. We have several eventsin November and December so thought it would be good to publish a list here.We are in the process of having a new web site so keep an eye out for that.

On Saturday 31st we are at Saltburn Bandstand for the viewing of dogs needing loving homes,10am-12, refreshments available so do come along and say hello to the volunteers and the dogs. Also that day we are going to be in the new Pets at Home on the Skippers Lane estate from 10am until 4pm, we are doing a tombola and collection with dogs in their haloween finery.
Saturday 14th November we will be street collecting in Redacr, this is a way to raise funds to continue our work.At the moment we have Tye who may have to have extensive ear surgery and Mabel who needs to swim in a hydrotherapy pool to help build muscle, just two examples of where the funds we raise goes, every penny helps and all goes to the rescue dogs.
Friday 20th November we are in Marske Cricket Club with The Fishermens Choir event. There will be a buffet and tombola.Tickets will be £5 and available at the club or you can reserve by phoning 01642 488667.

The sweethearts had only been engaged a matter of months but as Mary feared her beloved might not return home from the conflict, they were hitched at The Cathedral church of St Nicholas in Newcastle.

"It wasn't a shotgun wedding but there were a lot of rifles," joked 94-year-old John, referring to the fact that everyone had to be dressed, armed and ready for action at anytime.

They managed to fit in a two-day honeymoon at Otterburn Hall, Northumberland, before John was thrust into the Second World War.

On going to war John said: "We took it as it came, as you do when you're young. It needed doing and that was it."

The couple from Marske, who are both in their nineties, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on September 23.

John was born and bred in Newcastle. He met Mary while on holiday in Staithes, where she lived and worked on a farm.

He said: "We were just bairns when we met, we've known each other most of our lives."

John served with the Royal Artillery, was called back home to work as an engineer, before returning to the frontline with the Anti-Tank Regiment, Armoured Division.

He ended the war in the small German town of Flensburg.

Mary remained in Gateshead until John returned and they moved to the High Street, Marske, during the Christmas of 1950, where they have lived ever since.

John set up his own engineering business in Stockton repairing heavy vehicles and locomotives.

Mary looked after their two children, Arthur and Susan - both now in their sixties - and became the president of the Women's Institute in Marske.

She explained why they chose to live in the village: "It's a nice quiet place. We take part in local events, and it's very convenient if you want to go anywhere."

"I have always loved the sea," added John, who makes the most of living on the coast - sailing his fishing boat Pemberton.

They celebrated their anniversary at The Ellerby Hotel with two cakes, lots of cards - including one from the Queen - flowers, and 20 friends and family, pictured above Mary and John with their son Arthur and daughter Susan.

John said: "We have never bothered very much with gifts and it would be very difficult to choose anything now because of the amount of things I've given over the years."

So what's the secret to a long marriage?

Mary, who turned 96 on Sunday said: "I suppose everybody has their ups and downs but you come through them.

"We just get on with each other and don't fight."

John added: "We're both old fashioned; Mary's always looked after the house and made the house a home while I brought in the cash.

"But it's different for young couples now."

A TEAM of Teesside darts enthusiasts hit the bullseye when they set a world record for points scored in an hour.

The team of eight stepped up to the oche at Marske Cricket Club to set the record - and raise cash for charity at the same time.

The Worthington's darts challenge took place on Wednesday, September 9, from noon to 1pm.

Gary Pursley, an accounts manager from the Molson Coors Brewing Company, and his team, scored 21,944 points in 60 minutes.

The darts challenge was all recorded on video and is now to be registered with the Guiness Book of Records as a new world record.

They were helped in their bid by including in their team world darts number nine Colin Osborne, from Middlesbrough.

Gary, who lives in Marske, said: "As a company we try to raise funds for Mencap, which is our chosen charity, and the idea was to get a team together of eight players, which is what we did."

The darts marathon raised more than £2,000 for the charity through sponsorship.

Gary, 44, added: "It was also to encourage people to get back to their local pubs and clubs and take up the challenge. The record is there to beat.

"We are absolutely over the moon. Everybody is delighted. We feel very proud in doing what we've done."

Sean Bradbury, Molson Coors regional director for the North-east, urged teams throughout the country to take a crack at the record and raise more money for Mencap.

The bid is being backed by world darts champion Phil "The Power" Taylor.

Sean said: "We are putting out a challenge to all our customers - to pubs and clubs - to try and beat our record and raise money for Mencap.

"We are going to be doing that on a national basis. It's come from the North-east and the Middlesbrough area, it started here, but we are hoping to extend it and issue the challenge to all our customers.

"It will be a tough one to beat. It was a good score."

No one hour points world record existed prior to the bid.

RESIDENTS have lost their fight to stop the closure of a local bank agency.

The Halifax agency in Marske has closed its doors for the final time.

The move was met with anger from residents, but despite opposition, including a 1,000-signature petition, the agency, on The Wynd, has closed.

News of the closure was announced in July when a poster appeared in the window and customers received letters apologising for any inconvenience.

However neither offered any explanation as to why.

The news upset users, particularly pensioners who must now travel to Redcar, Guisborough or Middlesbrough to do banking.

Pensioner John Tucker, 66, a retired HGV driver from New Marske, said: "It was easy to stroll down there and draw my money out, now I will have to go to Redcar and have the inconvenience of that."

Independent Councillor and Marske resident Mike Findley sent the petition to Halifax.

He said: "I spoke to the regional manager of the Halifax and it was obvious that nothing we said or could do was going to save it. I even wrote to the Prime Minister and I got a letter back from The Treasury saying they understand our concerns however the Government is unable to intervene in individual branch closures."

Solicitors Atha, Strong & Co, where the branch was based, is unaffected by the closure.

In a statement, Halifax Bank said: "Our priority is to minimise any impact on customers and we are writing to them to let them know about alternative banking facilities in their area."
