Shop Hunting...barn style!

Today I went to view this barn with a friend who is looking at the property as a whole. She asked me to come along for styling/ design advice as she has other plans for the property and knows how much I yearn for a little store of my own.

I think this barn is amazing. This is the back entrance, which is beautiful in its own right. Inside it is a barn like any other...but I can imagine the space filled already. I know, with my luck finding a shop has been near impossible - but I can dream...right!!?

Something like Tricia's would be perfect for me.

This is the outside of Tricia's beautiful barn and the image that really sent me over the edge!
For those of your that might not know what I mean...let me explain.
This is where it all started, back in early 2008. My Sister and I were looking to rent this Victorian building, she was going to run the Cafe/ restaurant and I was going to open my store in this little shop you see...it was perfect. Great street frontage, not overly big to start with and I had imagined this shop as mine for about 4 years...need less to say, it is still not ready to go and I gave up! I should have been in there a year this month!!
Then there was this one, virtually half a minute from our home and with main road frontage.

Inside was even better than the first shop, yeah it would take more to fill, but I had quite a bit of vintage furniture to fill it with. Anyway...now it is a movie hire store.
Maison Reve, a store I adore in the States is what I had visions of for the above shop. I have had this in my shop file for a while and every time I look at it, it just makes me want it even more.

Images like this shop are basically teasing me to go ahead and do it, open my little dream shop and stop worrying about how much foot traffic, global credit blunders and woes the world has.

Even if I didn't have a permanent shop, a pop-up store keeps springing to mind and images like this...
..and this call to the bargain hunter in me to go gather old wares, re purpose and give them new life and sell as an seasonal thing.

..but the idea of that permanent shop is something I can do my consulting, styling and sewing ventures in. A home away from home, filled by all things that I love and hopefully others who visited would too. Windows like this don't help!
After walking around this property today and through the gorgeous gardens that envelope the barn and home, my friend and I spent a full day working out details for her plans for the property/house...

..and my plans for this barn.

As the story goes, nothing may come of this, but it would be nice to have this little barn all dressed in white and full of candles, soft furnishings, old furniture, little topiary box plants, lots of linen and my own products - and just a few kilometers from home.

If anyone out there has gone through anything like this, I would love to hear about it...it might make me feel better.

New Life...and New Tags!

We had perfect weather over the last few days and it is so nice to be outside again. Last night while we were playing Cricket with the boys, we found this little nest with 3 little baby birds snuggled inside in one of my rose bushes (whilst looking for the ball!). Don't worry, I didn't climb up to take this photo. The nest is about chest high and right at the edge of the bush. Now, I just have to keep the boys away from it
I also wanted to show you some new tags for the store. 'Herald Angel' is a new one for Christmas this year. A set of 2 is US$6.00.

The next ones are great for all year round and I love the 'Blackbird' tag as it indulges my thing for birds! Set of 2 is US$6.00.

Another sweetie is the 'Butterfly' tags. The design on this is beautiful.

Set of 2 is US$6.00.

I haven't listed this one yet and I will hopefully be doing it sometime today or tomorrow. It is a little flourish design and would be great for Christmas, but I can see it just as happy dressing up a Wedding gift, Christening, Birthday gift...actually anything. It would also look lovely on your tree this year.

I hope you all enjoy your weekend. Apparently we are in for a gorgeous one in Tasmania and I plan to use it outside...I wish it was sitting in an outdoor space like this, but never mind -I will be in the weeds!

I feel a little guilty for having neglected my blog of late with the chaos that I have going on at the moment. This is also evident by my lack of comments on my favourite blogs. I hope to remedy this soon. Please forgive me.

Today I am loving, white, fresh greenery, chippy paint and worn wood...oh, hang on I always love those!! I do love this photo though and it is really inspiring me. It is also helping me plan what to do for Christmas as well as really getting me motivated for my little store to somehow open. I have also been thinking of gifts for the festive season...

Styling Christmas

You may have realised that I adore anything which is styled well, and these next three photos from Caroline Swift's site are just gorgeous. They have got me thinking of our Christmas setting this year and what I will do to make it better than last.
These stoneware flowers would look great as place settings don't you think?

And imagine little dipping bowls made from thin bone china...stunning!

New Items For Christmas From M&L

I haven't posted anything from my Etsy store for a little while, so today I am showing you some of the new things that have been listed.

I have finally added our range of Christmas tags, stockings etc and they are going really well.

I love these little 'Star Tags'. I especially love them as place tags on the Christmas table. They come in a set of four and are US$12.00

These 'Joy' tags are a great seller at Christmas time. The texture on the tags is from vintage French linen. I think it gives the tags a lovely look and feel instead of being totally smooth.
They come in sets of 2 for US$6.00.
These 'Dove' clay tags are new to the store and are sold in sets of 4 for US$12.00. They look great as a gift tag, like here, or on your tree or table.
Little trees for your own tree or for a beautiful gift tag, either way they look so cute...and are US$9.00 for 3!

Some of you will remember my Flour Sack pillow...but I have improved it! It is now hand stamped in a eco friendly black ink, which gives it much more clarity than the last ink I used. It still comes filled ready to use and is only US$20.00ea.
My new favourite cover this season is this 'Wheat Sack' cover, which has been hand stamped with the same eco friendly ink that the Flour Sack is done with.....

and it has some embroidery detailing on each side of the print and a red ticking back (which will be for a limited time).

Wedding Styling by Me

The Bride and Groom.

Saturday was a perfect day for styling a wedding, beautiful sunny weather and warm.

The day went off without a hitch and after hearing me babble on about it for the last while, I thought I would show you the photos of what went on.

Here is the reception venue, well what I started with anyway.

And here it is after it was dressed for the day, well a bit of it anyway.

The venue is gorgeous with the most brilliant of water views...and the fact that it was all white was a great canvas to work with.

This is the table that greeted the guests. I had set up the guest book and some cameras so you could take a photo of you and your partner, which will be developed and stuck in the book alongside the comment from each of the guests. I also re-used one of the church pew bunches to lay on this table. It is the bunch of native branches with the glass heart and ribbon (I have just realised I didn't get any shots from the church, so once the real photos come back, I will post them). A little white lantern and one of my soft gold coloured antique jugs (that went wonderfully with the brides gown) that was filled with Irises, Daisies and twisted willow finished of this table.
Here is the gift table...with a view!
I made a large wreath out of the twisted willow and tied the Brides favourite heart with some soft gold organza ribbon and tucked in one of my clay tags that said 'thank you'. Also, one of the pew bunches was placed at the bottom of the wreath with another soft gold jug filled with the flowers and a little white lantern.

It all worked so well together!!
The tables were arranged with glass vases filled with Irises (which is what the Bride carried), Daisies (the flower girls and grooms flowers) and willow. I also added bowls of pink (a Brides fave colour) and white marshmallows so the guests could have a little nibble between courses. Eight glass tea light jars surrounded the vase for warmth...and seeing it was a lunch time wedding there was no huge need for lots of candle light- but its always nice to have some.
Hearts was the theme along with gold and purple, so I made up clay hearts and hand stamped each guests name and a small heart onto all of the place tags and tied a thin purple ribbon on each. This became the gift for each person to take with them.
this was the Brides' setting. The menu which was printed in the font from the invitations was placed under each plate.

Here I am with my lovely friends (from left) Krista, the Bride- Bernadette, me and Narelle. It was such a lovely day and I thank Jason and Bernadette for letting me be such a big part of their special day.

.....now I can rest!

Restful Spaces

This month has been pretty crazy for me and I am really needing to do some things around the house and yard soon as I have neglected our Old Lady for a while. I thought that since warmer weather is on it's way, I would share some very restful spaces that I would love to curl up in.

Cafe Style

Today, after last nights post, I have turned my sights on to the logistics of creating this barn "pop-up store". I know these pictures don't relate to this but I have had a few cafe influenced pictures saved for a while and thought I would share what I would love to have if I had a cafe.

The one above is perfect...all white, beaded boards and comfy wicker chairs. Their would have to be a casual comfort to the air. I like cafes where Mums can feed without being judged, old people can access everything and children can be themselves (and entertained in a small kids only space fill with games).

These banquet seats have always been something I have loved...especially in a cafe setting. If it is tufted, even better. I would pass on the cow rug and modern shelving, but the colour of the fabrics and the bulkhead would be a yes for sure.

Kitchenalia in frames is such a cute idea for a cafe...after all it is what makes the place work! fresh blooms in jugs and chunky glass, not done by a florist, but plucked right from the yard would give a loved, unfussy feel to the cafe.

A small alfresco area, nothing to grand- small and quaint, would be ideal. I love the idea of old jars to hold flowers on the tables and market umbrellas (in white!) to provide the shade.

...the store I have longed for all this time?

Let me explain.

The ever inspirational and uber talented Tricia Foley who has long been one of my all time favourite designers turned this lovely barn from a dark, damp outbuilding into...
...her gorgeous studio.
Now, I loved this project and admired Tricia's use of the space. A multi tasking area that could be turned into a wonderful entertaining area (complete with projector screen for those Summer popcorn movie nights) or spare guest quarters at a whim, then back to her work space.

Recently, Tricia re-invented the barn into a seasonal store she called The New General Store. A mainly Summer and Fall extravaganza of local produce, natural home remedies and lots of style.

How does this apply to me? Well, we so happen to have a outbuilding which we use as an entertaining space in the warmer months (it needs a little work) and I have often thought how great it would be if I could use it somehow as my Interiors/Home wares store.

Some of you will know that I was meant to open my little shop last year and because of things out of my hands...it never happened. I was not happy. It hasn't stopped me wondering "How do I get this thing going"?

I have been sketching non-stop since the shop was first on the drawing board. Things like what it would look like, how it would be laid out, even to the packaging had been designed.

Simple ideas like hand written signs, like these from Tricia's store.
I have often thought it would be lovely to have local plants and products to sell and seeing we are in a tourist country town and our little shed is in a prime stopping spot, and I can work my own hours (even seasonally), no rent, baby sitters/child care etc...it just makes more sense.
Now, Tricia's store is a market of sorts and others can sell their bounty on her property. I don't have that in mind...too much red tape. I am loving the idea of Summer tables of produce and home wares based around a very simple and natural colour palette of white (of course), wood, wicker and fresh greenery...like this shot. The colours that will sit with any decor, no matter how funky or classic.
You know from my recent project post that I am a fan of the blackboard and the fact that I love calligraphy just seem to go hand in hand for shop signs don't you think?
We actually have a little wood fired bread shop here in town. It would be lovely to have them wrapped in brown paper and natural twine, sold from big chunky fisherman's baskets!

Here is the inside of Tricia's barn.

My type of interior for a shop. White painted shelves, lots of texture, hemp and burlap, vintage items, wicker, flowers, iron stone, glassware...you get the drift.

So there it is. I have just shared my longest dream with you - to have a store of my own.

The lovely Brooke from Velvet & Linen has recently done an interview over at Ivan Meade's Blog...and mentioned Marley & Lockyer as one of her inspirations along with blogs like Cote De Texas!!! I am so humbled that Brooke would place me up with the likes of Joni Webb!!
Lighting - Buyster Lighting
Next up...here is the lighting sample that the lovely Maree (who is really, really fast on getting back to you!) is sending me for review to put in our living room. You may remember that I have been after a light to put in that space for some time. My love of chandeliers had been a little worn because I have seen them everywhere...this one is a happy medium - drum shade and chandelier. Best of both worlds.
As soon as this lovely turns up I will show you it in situ...stay tuned.

And finally, an apology. I am sorry I didn't post yesterday but something was up with Blogger...for me anyway. Every Blogspot address I tried to view, it came up with some crazy number sequence. I am just happy to see my blog didn't get swallowed into cyber space!

It's Perfect...thanks Miss Kris!

Now you know why this is my Dream Home!!
The beautiful Miss Kris lives not far from this gem and sent me these photos of the outside of my Dream Home...and I wasn't disappointed. I know I have shown photos of this home before (you can see one on my side bar under Dream Home), but now I have the whole visual package, I thought we would have another look...cause I never tire of this place!!
My Mum and I just looked over this home in huge view and every little detail of this exterior is just heavenly. I would walk in tomorrow...no worries!

Remember the living room? How could you not. Hydrangeas, iron stone, white sofas, French doors, fire place....sigh!
...ornate mirrors, loads of light...and gorgeous lighting.
The outdoors doesn't disappoint either.

But, this is the picture that started it all - the kitchen! Superb.

Now you see why this is my Dream Home, right?

Gorgeous Country Home

This stunning home belongs to Caroline Scheeler and was recently featured in Country Living. I have fallen in love with the dark colours against the crisp white and this kitchen is a beautiful example of how well dark walls and white accents work together. The colour of the walls is Ralph Lauren "Mercer" paint and the marble chosen because it will age.

What a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by! The coffee table can be bought here in Australia at Orson & Blake.

This has to be the idea of the week! These panels were rescued from an old Horse stable and pair up well with an antique French gilded mirror...and I love the reflection!!

As you can see Caroline is Equestrian mad. I love the fact that it is not little statues and kitsch horse things every where. She has worked out a wonderful balance of showing what she loves...with style!

The Belgian sofa is an antique. It has been matched up reclaimed and new reproduction pieces. They all look wonderful together.

I am not usually a fan of animal prints, but I can take it here. The Italian headboard reminds me of Brooke Giannetti's home.

Panelling in a bathroom always looks stylish, and I love it around this bath.
The fact that Caroline travels the world for her job is evident in all of the well chosen vignettes she has around her home. This one features a vintage Italian sunburst mirror, a foot of an old claw foot bath and suitcases she has picked up at a Belgian flea market.

I just love it!
Oh - the Church wasn't that bad =0). I give you a before and after when I have finished.

Channelling The Great!

Off to view the Church and reception venue for the upcoming wedding I am working on in a minute...so I am channelling Atlanta Bartlett's talent to help. These pictures are from her web store Pale and Interesting.

Todays Project...Blackboard and Bakelite!!

BEFORE
This was our phone area the other day...lacking...what to do, what to do? I know! I will turn this panel into a chalkboard...makes sense. I am always looking for pen and paper.
Step 1- Remove the ugly keys hanger that came with the house.

Step 2- Give the panel a light sand to give the paint something to key to.
Here is the paint I used. Water based, no fuss...brilliant!

Step 3- Paint on 2 thin coats with drying time between.
Step 4- Once dry, rub white chalk over entire board. Then rub it all in with a dry cloth for that softer, used, school board look.

Step 5- Hang small cup hooks to hang our keys from and test out with a few messages that I had better not forget!
Step 6- Put everything back......and add my 'new' Bakelite phone that Mum brought on the plane with her..yay!
Isn't it great? Still needs a good shining and clean, but I think it is just perfect for this space and goes so well with our old home.
Voila!! project done.

An arrival and some new friends...

Loving these little berries that have burst through on a bush we have out the back. They make a little change to my usual display of flowers or greenery.
I am planing to add some to our guest room in preparation for my Mums arrival tomorrow night.

I have to go in there and try and get some things done, little unfinished pieces and change the bed around. It won't look any where near as pretty as this bedroom in the recent Wallace Cotton catalogue, but it will be comfy for my Mum.
Oh, I have been meaning to show you this picture of some Echidnas (native Australian wildlife) I took the boys to see recently. They are SO cute and you sit on the floor and they just walk all around you. One even climbed over Mason!! I don't have a photo of that as I was trying to stop him from touching them=))

I should have a few things to show you next week too.

Thanks for the 'get up and go'...

Have you ever had a day where you have no 'get up and go'?
Today is one of those days. I have loads of things to do, but just can't be bothered...until I seen this home in one of my favourite places in NSW...the Southern Highlands. This home is filled with things I love. Take the outside for example - box hedges, neutrals with white, French doors, Lavender...
The inside also sports my favourites - natural matting, floorboards, ticking, the glass ball lamp, squishy sofas and loads of cushions to sink into. The colour of the walls is very similar to our own home. This photo has me thinking that now I really want to cover our other sofa in blue and white ticking...in reverse though. What do you think??

Th kitchen is just a s beautiful. Tolix stools, roman blinds- which pick up the ticking on the sofa, wooden blinds, Hydrangeas, green apples in a white bowl. I could have shown you more as the list goes on, but you will have to buy a copy of Home Beautiful and see for yourself!
...off to decorate now!

Today's project...free stool

BEFORE
This little stool was basically free and was thrown in when I bought my $5.00 sideboard from my local haunt. I actually have two of these, but plan to cover them differently.
I have been planning to rescue them from the pitiful state they are in and seeing it is raining today thought I would make a start.
Please excuse the hideous carpet which is in my office. Hopefully it will be getting pulled up to make way for white floorboards soon. =0)

Firstly, I tore off the vinyl covering and carefully pried out the old upholstery tacks. Underneath I found this old wadding, which I have kept as it was in good condition still. The next step involved covering it in a natural canvas and give it a light sand.

This is from underneath the stool. The stools lid actually lifts to reveal a storage compartment and has a weird little box thing inside. This is the underside of the box which shows the makers label. I have kept this on because I think it adds a sense of history to it...even though it may not be overly old. I am thinking 70's.

AFTER

I covered the top in this lovely hand screen printed linen called "Sumor in charcoal", by Australian Designers, Hollabee. I love the graphic nature of it and the fact it is in keeping with my colour scheme. The edging is bias binding and I recycled the old tacks.

Here is my little stool now. All that is left to do is give it a wipe over with bees wax to seal the wood. I am so happy with how it turned out and it only took an hour!!

The Hen's Tea at our house

Last week I mentioned I was having a get together at our house but I couldn't mention what as the guest of honour reads my blog...well, I thought I would show you what went on...
This is our covered area outside, which needs a lot of work and one day will be my office/guest house, which had to be prettied up in a small amount of time. I wish I had time to drape the ceiling in white and fairy lights as well...never mind.
AFTER
This is what I ended up with after hanging loads of ruffled curtains from the roof. The wreath is a fresh willow wreath I made and wrapped white fairy lights through it. It is not wired which is why it's not a perfect circle...but I like that.
Loads of food and lovely friends attended Bernadette's 'Hen's Tea'. Not a hens night and not a kitchen tea, more like a get together (girl style) to celebrate Bernadette's upcoming Wedding.

Here are some of the girls that attended. Sorry about my head looking so large at the front of the photo, but I had to set the timer (we just figured out how to do it!!) and try and squat down without sitting on feet before the shot was taken!!!

We gave her a big basket of goodies for her home and played games, one of which was to 'design' a wedding gown out of toilet paper...very funny. The 'bride'~in the middle, Narelle and her team mate, Leonie, won this one. Even the baby was dressed as a flower girl...so sweet!
After a lovely day, too much food and lovely company all I wanted to do was lie down and nap on the chaise!!

This image is wonderful! The get together I a have mentioned this week is happening tomorrow and I have been head down preparing for it. We are hoping to have the main part outside...weather prevailing! I don't have anywhere as gorgeous as this as a backdrop because the leaves on our old Sycamore are just starting to unfurl. I do have something pretty in mind though.

Flags and my office...

From my files - mag no longer in print

What is it about flags that have me hooked? Not sure, but I do know that I would love and old, faded, slightly tattered one to fill my office wall. This US one is fantastic propped against the wall and I have long loved this photo because of this flag in the frame.

This is my office at present and this wall is where I envision the tattered fabric. Being that I am of Scottish heritage (all my family were born there) and Australian (I was the only one born here), I think it would be fitting to have the St Andrews cross and an Aussie flag together...

...or a Union jack which is an amazing design against white walls.
Now, I am not about to start a new redecorating project in my office..although tempting...because I have so much on at the moment, but I have been sitting here thinking 'I really want to change something...anything around!'. The fact I am in here makes sense.

...loads of shelves and white painted floors like we have in our bedroom. The current carpet in here is old and three different brown tones...eew!
