On January 1, Harris County will welcome its new District Clerk, Marilyn Burgess. In advance of her swearing in, Burgess has built a strong transition team charged with creating a new model for the District Clerk’s office, focused on improving efficiencies and reprioritizing the budget. She has also announced three office appointments to date.

The transition team includes former Harris County District Clerk Loren Jackson, former Chief Deputies Wes McCoy and Ken Olive, former Director over the Criminal Bureau Margaret Wolfe, former IT Manager, Michael McDougal, and Attorney Judith A. Snively.

If you haven’t already heard the good news, I’m proud to announce I will be Harris County’s next District Clerk, and I can’t thank you enough!

When the election results started rolling in last night, I was extremely hopeful. I knew I had done everything I possibly could in the months leading up to the election to spread my message of restoring integrity and fiscal responsibility to the District Clerk’s Office. And then there was everything you did to support my campaign!

Together, we did some amazing work to turn Harris County blue. So on Election Day, I knew I could hold my head high, no matter the result.

All our hard work paid off in a tremendous way! We experienced record turnout in this midterm election because so many passionate citizens like you took to the polls to defend our values and to bring about much-needed change!

Starting January 1, I will be Harris County’s District Clerk, and I thank you for entrusting me with this office. I will work hard every day to maintain your confidence. Please reach out should you require the services of the District Clerk’s office.

NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC OFFICIALS SUPPORT BURGESS EFFORTS TO PROTECT VOTING RIGHTS IN HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS

Washington DC – The National Democratic County Officials (NDCO) have endorsed Marilyn Burgess for Harris County (TX) District Clerk. Harris County is the most populous county in Texas and the county seat is the city of Houston.

“Marilyn Burgess will use new technology to make the District Clerk office in Harris County more efficient,” NDCO Chair Commissioner Unzell Kelley (Coosa County, AL) said. “As a CPA and the former Executive Director of the Texas PTA, Marilyn has the leadership skills to modernize the Clerk’s office and ensure the department treats all fairly.”

The Harris County District Clerk has jurisdiction over the summoning of prospective jurors in the county. The District Clerk office is responsible for custodial care and safekeeping of all court records for 60 District Courts and 16 County Criminal Courts located in Harris County. Reflecting the size of the department the District Clerk has a $35 million budget and 500 employees. Harris County is the third largest county by population (4.7 million people with over 2.2 million registered voters) in the United States.

“Marilyn Burgess will use technology to improve services at the District Clerk office in Harris County,” said National Democratic County Officials Executive Director Michael Sargeant. “It is a matter of justice that jury pools are more representative of the citizens of the county and that cases are heard in a timely manner so defendants are not held in jail for an unreasonable amount of time because of the high cost of bail.”

The National Democratic County Officials (NDCO) is the official Democratic Party organization supporting the efforts of Democratic county officials across the country. NDCO has launched the first national political program that is helping Democratic county officials and candidates win elections. NDCO is building the infrastructure of the Democratic Party by introducing cutting edge political tools and promoting best practices to county races.

On May 22, the Houston Chronicle and other media outlets announced Marilyn Burgess as the winner of the Democratic Runoff for Harris County District Clerk.

“Marilyn Burgess, the chief financial officer of a fastener company, will face Republican incumbent Chris Daniel in the race for Harris County district clerk in November.

“The race was one of a handful of area Democratic and Republican runoffs decided Tuesday, cementing the local ballot for the November midterm elections.

“In the Democratic race for district clerk, Burgess easily bested Roslyn ‘Rozzy’ Shorter.”

“I endorse Marilyn Burgess for District Clerk. I only met her during this cycle, but like Diane Trautman she’s been out there campaigning for months, and she has great credentials for this office. All three of her opponents entered the race in the last days of the filing period. Two have no web presence – one was a candidate for SBOE in 2016, and had no web presence then, either – and one has a mostly unreadable website. District Clerk is – or at least should be – one of the least political elected offices out there. It’s about doing a straightforward information management job. I have faith Marilyn Burgess can do that job, and I’m voting for her.”
