Debra (with John) and Suzi (with me) have gone to the woods but have not picked up a gun to shoot a deer.

Here is a picture of Kathy taken down at Homewood Hunting Club in Claiborne County, when we were members. I really enjoy hunting with Kathy and have great memories of all our hunts!

Wishing my daughter a beautiful kind of day that she deserves for being such a wonderful person.
Have a Wonderful Birthday Kathy! Love you so much! MOM xxoo

An Old Cemetery Statue and A Camel

On January 14, 2012, I met my sister and nephew at the Vicksburg Cedar Hill Cemetery to visit our brother/father's grave. It was his birthday and he would have been 67 years old. Before we left I took the picture above and did not know that I had captured a bird-in-flight until I downloaded it on my computer. Below, my nephew showed us the spot where "Douglas", the camel, headstone was in the cemetery. I have heard about "Douglas" but did not know the actual place of the headstone. It so happened that my nephew helped put the marker in the ground to commemorate a "war hero" of the Civil War that was fought during the Siege of Vicksburg.

The lucky hunter was, Bill Pulse, getting an incredible 23-point buck.

As the story goes, Bill is a father of 3 boys (ages, 5, 7 and 18) and does not have the luxury of being a trophy hunter. His main objective is to fill the freezer.

He is a firefighter/paramedic and has a good amount of time to hunt the woods outside Parkville, Missouri, near the Kansas border. He had already killed two does and now the rut was on and was waiting for a nice buck to walk out.

On November 4, he was perched in a tree in the bottom of a wooded bowl and had already seen two nice bucks earlier in the year and was going to try and draw them in by rattling. He soon spotted a buck up the ridge and then another smaller one but then out of the corner of his eye spotted a huge tine 40 yards away in the timber.

He blew into his grunt tube and urged the buck into rage. The deer thrashed a tree and then came in grunting.

"I've never seen something so nasty," he said "I had no idea how big this deer was, other than it was the biggest deer I'd ever seen in my life."

The buck came in on a line and Pulse drew his bow, a Darton that was made in 1988 (Pulse fondly calls it his BowTech Banjo).

He picked a softball-sized opening in the brush below his stand and when the buck tromped through it, he squeezed the trigger on his release.

But the arrow hit a branch and sounded a harmless 'thud.' It was one of the most depressing sounds Pulse had ever heard.

"My heart hit my shoes when I saw my arrow in the tree," he said.

But the buck didn't totally spook. He started making his way up the ridge, while Pulse knocked another arrow. At 40 yards Pulse fired again as the buck quartered off. This time his air was true and he hit the
deer square. After a short tracking job he found the buck dead, 40 yards up the ridge.

"He looked like a rocking chair tipped over," Pulse said.

While the deer's rack is incredible, his body size is perhaps even more impressive. Pulse never got his buck weighed, but you can see just how enormous he is in this picture below. For reference, Pulse stand 5'10" and weighs about 200 pounds.

He had a buddy to help him get the deer out of the woods and quartered because in two days the Missouri Youth Hunt was coming up and he wanted to take his seven-year-old son, Garrett hunting. As you can see below, like father like son with the camo face, his son took down a 9 point buck. This was Garrett's first deer!

My congrats to both the father and son in our great outdoors! What an awesome and terrific hunting stories to tell for a lifetime!

I met Jeanette back in the early 70's while we were working together at the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District. She and I have become the closest of friends and I'm so fortunate to have had such a good friend in my life. We have shared tears of joy together, sadness together, and have leaned on each other throughout the years. She has always been there for me and we share a very close bond. Her oldest son, Charlie, was born on my birthday and the middle son, John Kirk, is my Godchild. The baby bed that I used for my four daughters (my mother gave as a gift), she used for her three sons who are college graduates, married with their own families to raise. She was also my Matron of Honor at my second marriage. I consider myself pretty lucky and blessed with her friendship. May your birthday bring you lovely memories, joyful moments, and glorious dreams. You deserve it Jeanette! Thanks many times over for being my friend. It means the world to me! With love and hugs! Marian

An Afternoon Hunt

When I got out of my hunting club, Jasper Bottom, after 25 years, I had my deer stand moved to my granddaughter and her hubby's land south of town. Have hunted it several times but have never seen a deer off of it. My grandson, Carl, did see one but missed it a couple of years ago. Yesterday, was the same, no deer, but it was alright. I enjoy just sitting on my stand and watching nature go by. I only saw two squirrels playing and a lot of birds and that was it. While on the stand I did hear a few shots from some lucky hunters. Bob, my husband, hunted on the edge of a creek bed on the opposite side of the land in his one-man stand. He did not see anything either but we both enjoyed a sunny afternoon hunt. Afterwards, we visited with family and watched my great grandson, Ian, roasting marshmallows with his two playmates on the front porch. He was having a blast!

I was happy to see my recent sunset picture published in our paper, The Vicksburg Post. It was taken on December 28, 2011, after hunting and seeing two nice bucks and eight does. We were invited to hunt at the famous Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club (Deer Camp Blog) after Christmas and as usual had a wonderful time hunting with the Howell family and their friends.

The Vicksburg Post has a criteria for accepting photos submitted by their readers. It should be current and of interest to the public, either because of their subject matter or their oddity, or the photographic skill shown.

His love for hunting began as a young boy growing up in Georgia when his dad took him hunting and was hooked after the very first hunt. He was lucky to have been introduced to the great wild outdoors at a very early age. He fills like its his duty as a father to pass on the great American heritage to his sons and friends so they can enjoy the great outdoors and learn to be better stewards of the land and practice wildlife management and conservation.

Adam will bring top quality stories, tips, videos, photographs, links and much more, he sad. He feels the same way I do when leaving a deer camp to go back home and face the fast paced everyday rat race but can't wait to get back to the beauty of nature that God has blessed us with. You really miss the clean smell of the woods, camp fires and most of all fellowship with your hunting friends.

Adam invites everyone to come on in and kick off your shoes and stay awhile. Go over and check out his NEW blog and I don't think you will be disappointed at all. My congrats Adam and wishing you GOOD LUCK on your NEW blog, GOODHUNTING and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Vicksburg Park Gone Hog Wild?

Wild hogs are seen in bottom land just off Graveyard Road in the Vicksburg National Military Park.
Sam Andrews - The Vicksburg Post

Wild hogs wreaking havoc in park -

If Mike Madell had some posters handy, he'd have the ugly mugs of seven wanted feral hogs plastered all over Vicksburg National Military Park.

"We've removed 11 so far since mid-October," Madell said. "And we've just sighted the group of seven. It's definitely a problem."

Wild hogs have made the northern third of the 1,800-acre park their rooting grounds since a mass migration of hogs, alligators, coyotes and other wildlife moved down the Mississippi River as it reached record flood marks in May, said Madell, the park's superintendent.

Dense brush between Graveyard Road and North Union Avenue has turned into a pig's playground - - earth is scoured throughout the woods, particularly around a marker for the Indiana Regiment.

"For whatever reason, they like it," Mandell said. "They must have found some food there."

The park has enlisted the help of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to trap and shoot the nuisance animals to head off any movement south or east where they could cross paths with joggers on the tour road.

"We can't transport them live," said Virginia DuBowy, the park's natural resources manager. "So, we do it in a humane way."

Wild swine weigh up to about 200 pounds and can be aggressive, usually around piglets. They may be hunted in Mississippi year-round without firearm restrictions. Concealed weapons may be carried in the park, but must remain inside one's vehicle, said Rick Martin, the park's chief of operations. Visitors may be cited by rangers for hunting in the park, which can prompt an appearance before a federal magistrate, Martin said.

Wild boars spotted at Riverfront Park in Vicksburg forced the city to close the park for nearly two days in the week leading up the the river's record 57.1-foot crest May 19. No records are kept when boars are shot by agents with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, the agency said.

Park officials saw an initial wave of hogs as the river rose and fell slowly. Some were believed to be the last of a group that had escaped from farmland near the park about two years ago, DuBowy said.

"The foot source for them is tremendous, with the grubs and plants," she said. "They've got a lot of water and a lot of cover. It's hard to get to - - but the pigs don't seem to have a problem with it. It's an inviting place for them."

Extensive crossbreeding has varied the appearance of wild boars, in terms of shape and coat color, according to a report issued by USDA in August. The agency says estimates of the U. S. feral pig population in 2010 reached 5 million over 37 states, up from 16 states in 1982. The animals cause more than $1 billion in damages to public and private property annually, the report said.
