Perhaps you have come across the service this week in some of the mind numbing surfing that is at the root of so much the time we spend online. The company is BizLanding.com. They put a new twist on the timeless lead generation tool we call landing pages.

Typically, landing pages are designed to generate leads from a specific target market. Biz Landing builds landing page campaigns for small business owners, targeting three different cities. The idea is to help businesses show up in local searches. An example page is Garage Door Renovation Company in Provo Utah. Hopefully that link helps their page out a little :) The company is called Renovation Doors and more and they are based in Provo, Utah.

Our goal was to make the service one of the best values for small business owners on the internet. The total bill for a small business owner comes to $349 for the three landing pages. Included in this price is a directory submission service. Each small business will be submitted to Google local, Yahoo! local, Bing local, Best of the Web, yellowpages.com, and superpages.com. There is also a hosting fee of $14.95 each month. Most of the work I did was to streamline the service so that we could provide the service as affordable as possible.

Anyway, here is another tool to help local small business owners who don't necessarily need a full website, but, like all of us, they need a presence on the web.

Scammers. Just like in any lucrative industry there is the temptation for scammers to enter the market, but SEO is a particularly nice industry for the greedy thugs. Because it is constantly changing, and every business needs it, there is a lot of room to profit off the ignorance of clients.

Believe it or not, Google.com even receives spam emails from would be SEO scammers, offering to optimize their site Read about SEO on Google.

This creates an enormous amount of distrust, even for the most legitimate SEO firms, and SEO freelancers out there. As I have fallen victim to this, and spent countless hours explaining, and re-explaining the work that I am doing, I am hoping to save myself, and other legitimate SEOs out there some valuable time in the future with these 5 Guaranteed Ways to Spot SEO Scams.

First Page Guarantees - First page guarantees are honest, if the gray area is still honest. It is actually possible to guarantee first page ranking, but only if you promise it for unusually obscure search phrases. The business name, or 5-6 word phrases will often appear on the first page of search results, without any SEO work at all. But the white honest SEO admits that there is nothing anyone can do that will guarantee first page rankings. If you see the promise, head for the hills, or at least click on to the next SEO firm out there.

Overly Cheap Prices - If you find people who are willing to do your SEO for under $100 per month, look closely at the services they offer. Real SEO requires creative thinking by experts who understand the industry inside and out. Experts aren't cheap, they never have been, and hopefully they never will be. The value a real SEO expert can provide to any business is priceless, whether or not it has made the Credit Card Commercial yet or not.

Clarify Big Numbers - This tactic playse on the "Perceived Value" of a service. "Thousands of links," and "Your site will be submitted to thousands of search engines," both sound great. Both are possible in the gray area of honesty, but neither will do much for your site., but neither on will do much for your site. ALL search engines will find your website naturally, and even 100,000 worthless links are still worthless. You need quality links. Ask how many page rank 4-5 or even higher links they will generate for your site. As in most things in life, Quality, not Quantity make the difference.

Demand Transparency - If you don't feel like your SEO firm is being up front with you, they probably aren't. Now, please respect that just as in any business relationship, there needs to be a certain degree of confidentiality. Things like Costs, Tools, and other resources should be up to the SEO firm to disclose. But an SEO who doesn't explain what they are doing, and more importantly, why they are doing it is a major sign that you need to head elsewhere for your SEO. Any SEO information you need, you can find online anyway, but like other art forms, SEO is creativity on the solid foundation of what works.

Professional SEO Audits - Find a trustworthy SEO professional to audit the SEO work that has been done to your site. TheSniche.com has pioneered a service that called SEO auditing. If you feel like you have been the victim of an SEO scam, put your mind at ease for about $100. Get a professional, unbiased perspective on the actual SEO status of your site.

Bottom line, there are hundreds of white honest SEOs out there. Be careful of the scams that are out there, but don't let the few bad apples poison the orchard... corny perhaps, but it paints the picture I want.

Google rules the world. But here is a little search engine market share chart from hitslink that surprised me (Click on the Image to see the source page marketshare.hitslink.com):

Google controls 81.38% of the search engine market. That is absurd, and it is wonderful news for SEOs around the world. It basically means that if you optimize your website for Google, your SEO work is done. Imagine how horrible it would be if there was an even split between three different search engines? You would have to run three different ad campaigns to get as much ad exposure as google gives you, and focusing on the differences in the algorithms would be much more important. I for one am happy that Google is there. Learn to do SEO that makes them happy, and you will be too!

The Bottom Line?

Google says content is king, so MAKE SURE YOUR CONTENT IS YOUR FOCUS!

Obviously your site is inherently the best site, and everyone who visits will immediately be captivated by it's awesomeness, and quickly make their way to conversion. Unfortunately Google Adwords keeps sending people who are immune to your site's awesomeness, you are losing money, and you are reading this post.

That's how my sites are too.

The trick is getting Google to send you the people who will fall captive to your site's spell. Of course this is a process, and not an event.

Here are 5 tips that are not my own, originally , but I have tested them, and they work every time:

Competitive Adwords Settings - Be sure your adwords campaigns are set up to help you make the most money, not to help Google make the most money. Be sure to trim the fat progressively as you see what is helping and what is not.

Conversion Tracking - Don't waste any of your traffic. Set up conversion Tracking and goals in Google Analytics to ensure that you are getting the most out of your traffic.

Aggressively Categorize your Phrases - Ad Groups. Create as many ad groups as necessary to fit all of the keywords you need into your campaign. The more keywords you can bid on the better, ONLY if you categorize them well enough to help your quality score.

Bid Wide - Bid on as many keywords as possible. Put together keyword lists using as many tools as possible. Ideally you want to be bidding on EVERY relevant keyword to your site. As you see which type of keywords convert you can focus more on those types. Also you can trim the fat from your campaigns as you see the phrases that don't make money and take them out.

Bid Low - Don't waste your money getting the top rankings with high bids. Bid low for your traffic, and let your quality score pull you to the ideal positions on pages (not always the first spot). Once you see which keywords deliver customers to your site, then you can up your bids.

If your site isn't the best it could be, follow my blog, as I take your through the process of making money online, from beginner to Pro.

It was what all the buzz at the SES Conference in Chicago (SEO is Dead at a SEARCH ENGINE Strategies Conference?). It is in at least 1 of the three SEO newsletters I subscribe to every week. The more heard about this, the more my human nature kicked in the more I thought I should look into it...

... So, I Googled it.

I started my search on the most used website on the internet, Google. The sites, and blogs that were best optimized for search engines are the ones that I used to find my stats. First of all it is ironic that the best way to find out if "SEO is Dead", is on a search engine. It is also ironic that the sites spreading this fanatical claim are highly optimized for search engines.

SEO is as Alive as Ever

60% - Search Engines account for 3 of the top 5 most visited websites in the world and 8 of the top 20.

737,803,400 - The Google Keyword Tool Results for You Tube, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Digg.

120,775,920 - The SEO Book Keyword Tool Results for "You Tube, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Digg.

$21,256,000,000 - Google made this much more money than the $550,000,000 combined revenue of Facebook, YouTube (part of Google), twitter, and digg.

What Does Dead Mean?

If by dead people mean "evolving, growing, or changing", then yes, SEO is Dead, but if by "dead" they mean "dead", then no, SEO is Not Dead.

SEO is changing. It is no longer the only way to make money on the internet, like it had been for 10 years. "SEO is Dead" is nothing more the latest sensationalist view to get noticed.

Internet marketing as a whole is growing. SEO is changing. Social Media is emerging. There are more players in the game now, but search engines remain the biggest, and most profitable players out there.

That's all for my rant...

It was my first time in Chicago, and I loved it. While I was at the conference I was shocked to find that so many people even among the ranks of the so-called SEO Professionals don't know how powerful a domain name can be. Aside from branding, and direct traffic, there are ways that your domain name can hurt your site, and of course ways that your domain name can help your site.

Don't Look Like a SPAMMER

First of all, when you are registering your domain, be sure to register it for two years. I won't go into detail in this post but in my days as a spammer (It wasn't SPAM according to the law, but if you got it in your inbox you would probably call it that - I will go into detail about email marketing in future posts), we would go through hundreds of domain names every year. Search engines see this trend and so they often penalize websites if the domain name is registered for less than a year. It is one of the key factors in the Website Grader. Always register your domain name for 2 years minimum to avoid looking like spam.

3 Words or Less

Your business plan is not a good domain name. Not only will long domain names hurt your direct traffic potential, but you will run into issues with many Pay Per Click Engines if your Display URL is too long. Keep it to 3 words or less. 2 is ideal, 3 is an absolute maximum.

Use Your Keywords

We have talked about how important keywords are in every piece of SEO, so it only makes sense that it is important in your Domain Name. Your goal is to create congruence between what you present, and what Google, and other search engines see. Choosing a Domain Name that has your keywords in it, helps solidify that congruence.

Multiple Registration Advice

Here is the question that burns in the hearts of so many of my clients, and probably lots of my readers' hearts as well. Should I register .com, .net, .us, and the rest, or just focus on one? I am going to go out on a limb and say it doesn't really matter to most of us. Of course domain registration sites will tell you that you need to get all of them to protect your brand. That is true for sites like facebook, digg, google, nike, and many major companies, but for most of us, our brand is not worth the investment on all the types of domains out there.

My advice:

If you have the money to do it, DO IT.

If you DON'T have the money to do it, Don't Fret it. If it ever becomes an issue you are rich anyway.

Some people are so good at using domain name registration to drive traffic that that is all they do (I could hardly believe it either when I met this guy in Chicago). It works, and I will explain the dynamics of it in a later post, but there are other methods that are more simple for beginners.

How to Start With Domain Names

Start with a domain name registration site. I generally use Godaddy, but there are hundreds out there, some cheaper than others where you can start. Here is a link if you would like to use GoDaddy. You will find that many of the domains that you want to register are already taken by Domain Squatters. Don't get frustrated though. Your domain name is not going to be the piece of your website that makes or breaks it. Use this post as guidelines, not hard fast rules to get stressed out about. If you have questions about this please comment on the post.

You have a total of 95 characters to:

Grab Attention

Create Curiosity

Invite to Act

Here are three tips to help you do these three things in the space allowed:

Popularity Contest - Make people feel like they are missing out if they don't click on your ad. If people feel like they will be more popular if they know what your site is about, they will more likely click on your ad. Use words like "Popular, Join, Amazing, Wonderful," and any positive adjectives.

Get the Adrenaline Pumping - Use words that grab attention, and get adrenaline going, like "alert, warning, urgent, hurry, fast, and limited." This is a strategy that you probably see every day in your email in box. The subject lines that seek to make you want to read the email by making you be afraid not to.

Use a Call to Action - Once you have people's attention, they will do what you tell them to more often then not. If you don't have inviting text that tells them what to do next, you will miss potential clicks. Action words are the best way to do this, because they are short, and inviting. Use words like, "See, Read, Join, Sign Up, Call, Learn, Get, Find, Listen, Download, Browse, etc."

Use The Keywords you Bid On - This has always been an effective ad writing strategy in Adwords, but with the quality score addition this is twice as important. The keywords in your ad that match the keywords people search for will be displayed in bold, to help you catch people's attention. This will help you in grabbing people's attention, as well as with your quality score.

Just Sell the Click - People are searching for certain things on search engines. When they get to the search engine results page, the only thing they are deciding is, "Which site should I go to?" With your ad, DON'T SELL A PRODUCT SELL A CLICK. Only give people enough information so that they feel a need to click to see more.

Getting Started Writing Ads

Remember, the best way to find out if something will work is to try it. If you think of an idea and you are not sure if it is a sure fire winner, try it out. If you are right, you will get all the traffic you need. If you are wrong, you will be one idea closer to finding the one that will work the best. The best way to avoid writers block is to start writing, and then go back and make sure that your ads follow these guidelines.

Search engine submissions are worthless because a search engine that is worth being included in will find your website free anyway. If you have any links going to your website from any indexed web page on the internet you don't need to submit to search engines. For ways to get links check out this post on Link Building

Definitely don't pay for it.

What You Should Do

Manually Submit: There is some debate on whether or not this is helpful or harmful. I have never used it just for the reason that if it does hurt it's not worth the extra time that I am in Search Engines. If you decide to manually submit, here are some links to use:

Google Site Submission
Yahoo Site Submission
MSN Site Submission

Let them find you: Search Engines have crawlers that are constantly scanning the web for new web pages. If you do some basic link building, or even a Pay Per Click Campaign, your site will be found "Naturally." The only drawback to this method is time. If you are in a hurry, this is not the best method.

Here is a visual:

The Difference in Dropshippers & "Dropshippers":

There are thousands of companies out there who dropship. But there are also some companies out there that "Dropship". Those companies are the companies that are really just middle men between you and the dropshipper, and they are skimming some of your profits. You need to be careful of these middlemen.

Here are some of signs of middle man interference:

low profit margins: Sometimes the actual profit margin is hard to find, because of the items in the small print like per-product dropship fees, or percentage based dropship fees that eat away at your profits. A good profit margin to look for is 25% or higher. There are some products out there that the market rate is quite low, but less than 25% is a good sign that there is middle man interference.

Lots of Name Brand Products: Although it is very enticing to be able to offer name brands on your site, it is actually VERY difficult to find legitimate wholesale prices on name brand products, and even more difficult to find someone who will dropship name brand products. If you see the most popular brands, you can almost be sure that you are dealing with a middle man.

Imported Goods: Imported goods are almost always going to be shipped through a middle man. Often you can find healthy profit margins, despite the fact that you are not dealing direct because foreign products are so cheap. But remember, if your profit margin isn't high enough you will not make any money on your website, for a long time.

In reality the model above will look something like this in the end (you just want to avoid letting more hands in the pot than necessary):

The Fine Line of Using Dropshipping Profitably

If your profit margin is high enough for you to make money, it really doesn't matter how many hands are in the pot. You need to remember though, you have marketing costs associated with running a website. You will have paid advertising, as well as other costs. Generally a profit margin that will allow you to make money on your website it 30% or better. The better profit margin you have, the more potential you have to make money in competitive markets.

Where to Start with Dropshipping

The fastest way to find dropshippers is through dropship directories. One dropship directory that I have worked with in the past is at 123Shipper.com. Like most dropshipping directories they charge a fee, but unlike most dropshipping directories, this is a one time fee, with NO monthly charges. It is current as of May 2009, and it only about $100.

Here is a link to a special combination offer where you get the dropshipper directory, and a website builder for $20:

Webstie Builder Bunde

At the top of the the first write "Past," on the second write "Present," and on the third write, "Future."

On each sheet of paper write down 5 activities that you enjoyed at the time period listed at the top of the sheet. For the past, write down things you enjoyed in the past, but because of age, budget, or lack of time you currently can't do as often as you like. On the sheet that says present, write down things you currently enjoy doing, and on the sheet that says future, write down things that you think you would like to do in the future. (In the end of step 2 you will have 15 different activities on your sheets.)

For each of the activities, write down 5 products that you would use in that activity. Don't be specific, with brand names, or models, just write down products that someone would need to start participating in that activity. (at the end of step 3 you have 75 different products listed.)

Now let me expound a little on what these activities give you, in reality. You have 15 different niches that you know something about to base a website on. You probably know something about the markets that you are considering entering into, and you probably know something about the needs of the market. All of these things make the niches that you have listed ideal product solutions for you to start your research with!

Go and Get started! When you are done brainstorming, come back and read the post on tool you can use to pick surefire winners... It is very important that you wait till after brainstorming to look at the tools, otherwise your products and your niches will be skewed and your brainstorming will be less successful.

And why not? They are fast, easy ways to make money. And, the more sites you have, the more revenue streams you have, and the richer you get. But if you are like me, you don't make any products, and you don't have any amazingly awesome connections where you can get wholesale products, so you have to find products on the internet.

Before You Start Looking at Tools DO THE BRAINSTORMING!

It is important that you have effective product brainstorming. If you don't have product ideas, check out the brainstorming activities first!

Narrow Your Results: Picking the Surefire Winner:

Let's get on to the tools out there to help sort through the crap, to find the gold. First, is the Google Keyword Tool... which, as we know, tells you what people are searching for online. Obviously to some, this can be used to find the products that are in demand, and more than that, it tells you the competition level for those keywords.

We are going to use it to determine if you can compete in the market you are considering. At this point you have probably not contacted any suppliers so you don't know your profit margins, but it is important to understand the principle while you are looking at the search terms. If your profit margins are high, then you will be able to compete in any market out there, however, if your profit margins are low, you should focus on products that are searched less than 10,000 times per month. For those words your paid advertising will be lower, and you will able to rank in search engines, very quickly.

Other free tools that you can use to find the search terms out there:

SEObook.com (also a great source of Internet Marketing Information!)

A Starting Place for Choosing Products:

Do your product Brainstorming

Begin with 5 products from your brainstorming that you most want to sell

Research the search terms using Keyword Selection Tools

Start contacting suppliers through Dropship Directories

If you need help setting it up, Google does a great job of explaining it. Set Up your Code Here

Google Analytics is the best analytics program available for beginners because it is free. It doesn't provide the most information of all of the analytics programs, but IT'S FREE so use it. There are entire blogs about analytics filled with information on how to make it do some amazing things, but as a beginner you don't need anything that is hard to do or find. Tonight I am going to tell you what you do need in the beginning, and what to ignore for now.

In your Google Analytics account you only need to set up two things while you are getting started, Goals, and Automated reports. I will start with automated reports.

Automated Reports in Google Analytics

Automated reports send you information about your traffic through email. This is a great way to see how your site is doing every day. In the beginning you will want to receive a daily report of your traffic so you can see how close you are to 100 visitors per day. It won't always be necessary to see your traffic every day, but in the beginning, and any time you are making major changes to your site, it is very important to see daily reports.

To set up reports here is the click path:

View Report ---> Email (at the top NOT in the column) ---> Schedule Tab ---> (fill out Form) Schedule

Be sure to add a subject line, and a numbers comparison. This is really more to make you feel good than it is to serve a real purpose at this point.

Goals in Google Analytics

Goals are perhaps the most important piece of Analytics. Goals will tell you what percentage of your visitors are taking the action you want them to. In a later post I will go into the conversion funnel in great detail, but for now, just remember that you want to get as many people as possible to follow the actions that will lead to a conversion.

For new websites, it is impossible to know which click path will be the most successful, so you want to set up goals according to what you think is going to be the best. I usually don't advocate doing any work based on assumptions, but in this case you are saving time by setting up based on an assumption. It would be a hopeless waste of time and energy to try to find the best click path before you started.

So, Start by choosing a conversion, or a desired action. Filling out a form, Making a Purchase, Downloading a File, and Registering for Newsletters are some common conversions, but it could be anything that you want your traffic to do.

Creating Your Goal in Google Analytics

When you log into Analytics you have two options listed at the far right of the screen. Click on "Edit." In the screen that comes up you will see a box where you can add goals. It looks like this (but less blurry) To specify your goal click on the "Edit" link to the right:
On the "Goal Settings" screen you have two sections. First the Goal Information. First, click on the "On" radio box. This makes your goal active. Next move the the second section to "Define your Funnel". Here you will paste URLs in the boxes of the pages that lead to your conversion. The best way to do this is to open a new tab, or window and go through ALL of the motions required to do the desired action on your site. Every time you click, you should copy the URL, and then paste it into the boxes provided (See Image Below). Finally, paste the target URL in the box called "Goal URL" that is above in the "Goal Settings Box". And your first goal is ready to go!

Whelp... it's Official!

I have written a walk through blog post! I don't love it, but there are times when the step by step applies to everyone, and I struggled with it enough initially that I hope to get people past it in the front. Please respond if you have any questions or if I missed anything!

I usually shoot for about 100 visitors per day before I start playing with my site. Once you have about 100 visitors per day there are several things you need to do. In particular order, other than how they came to mind, here goes:

Set up Analytics - If you have not already set up analytics, you are behind schedule, and you have had traffic that was less effective than it could have been. Set it up RIGHT AWAY cause you will use it for the rest of the life of your site.

Dial in your site - If you are not getting any conversions, then one of two pieces of bad news applies. First, your product or service is not "worth it" to your visitors. Or second, your site is broken. Either way, you can use your traffic to dial in on your problem. Dialing in a website is a game of statistics. If you have a 1% conversion rate (amazing for a brand new site by the way...) before you make a change, and a .5% conversion rate afterwards, you need to put it back. If your changes improve your conversion rate, obviously you are on the right track. Dialing it in is somewhat slow, as you should wait till about 500 people have seen your site to determine the effect of your change. (The longer you wait the better, but 500 visitors gives you enough results to make good predictions.)

Determine Broken Pages - If you are lucky, the problem with conversion is broken pages, not a bad product. If this is the case it is a good idea to set up goals within Google Analytics to see where people are falling out of the conversion funnel. As you work towards getting more people to the end, your conversion rates will go up. Goals will tell you which pages to start with in the Dialing In process.

Identify Demographics - Once you have traffic coming in you will begin to see times of day, regions of the world, genders, age groups, and other demographic indicators that will help you better target your marketing. If you have all of your conversions coming at a certain time of day it is wise to target your marketing toward that time of day. If females are the main buyers of your product, then you may consider making visual improvements, as well as adding more details to your site.

Identify Profitable Keywords - This is the primary focus of starting with Pay Per Click advertising. You will find that slightly different keywords have drastically different conversion rates. At first really doesn't make sense, but it is reality. The fact is that different types of people tend to search differently. Buyers tend to use one set of keywords, while browsers use another. When the change takes place is impossible to know, and is really not that important. It is important to know that there is a difference, and to target your SEO, and Link Building Efforts in that direction.

Of course there are more ways to use your traffic as you go on, but in reality, this is a hefty load already. The MAIN PURPOSE OF PAY PER CLICK MARKETING AT THIS STAGE IS GATHERING DATA.

Where to Start

First things first, Set up Analytics. If you don't use Google Analytics then find another way to monitor your traffic. Analytics is free though, and especially in the beginning you would be better off spending your money to generate traffic than you would be trying to analyze it.

Then begin dialing in your site. Work towards a two percent conversion. When you begin to see which keywords are converting the best, start your SEO and Online Marketing efforts! While you work on your SEO success be sure to keep working on your conversion rates so that you can make the most money possible from your SEO efforts.

Because of this, all of their activities are based on making them the most money. Google Adwords is no different. They make the most money on the ads that are clicked the most. Therefore, the most important number in Adwords is CTR. To ensure that they are displaying the ads that make them the most money possible they created a scoring method called the Google Adwords Quality Score. Two factors influence your quality score: CTR and the congruence of your AdGroup.

The relationship of the two is an upward spiral to the top of the paid listings. The more congruence you have; the more people click on your ad; the more people click on your ad; the better CTR; ad is displayed. The higher... well look at the "Congruence Tornado:"

Congruence in Adwords Adgroups

Congruence in Adwords is based on the three factors you control: Keywords, Ad Content, and Landing Page Content.

People are most likely to click on your ad if it talks about the keyword they searched for. They are more likely to stay on your landing page matches the ad that they clicked on. The more each of these elements compliment each other, the better your congruence will be. The best way to get a high quality score is to build a landing page to focus on a single keyword, and create an ad group with an ad based on that keyword, and then bid on only that keyword. That leaves you in the most control.

Other Quality Score Issues

Of course there are other factors that affect your quality score as well. Your bids, your bounce rate, conversion rate and other factors will affect your quality score, but the best way to improve your quality score is to make sure all of your ads are congruent as possible from keywords all the way to the landing page.

Actionable Steps to Improve your Adwords Account:

Find the Quality Score: First, you need to know what your quality score is for your keywords (In the new layout you will have to activate the column: Click "Filter and View" Then select "customize columns" Select Quality Score).

Take Out the Trash: Delete any keywords that have a quality score of 3 or lower from the adgroup. If it has a low quality score it will reflect on the whole ad group. If you turn the Congruence Tornado upside down the same thing happens. Low quality score leads to lower placement, less clicks, lower CTR, and a worse quality score. DELETE THEM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

Categorize your Ad Groups: After you have deleted the garbage keywords look at the other keyword quality scores. If your quality score is not an 8 or above, start by better categorizing your ad groups to match the ads. Be sure that you are only bidding on keywords that are in the Ad title for the ad group. If you are running multiple ads for the ad group, be sure that all your Ad titles include the keywords you are bidding on.

Optimize Your Landing Page: The landing page content should reflect good keyword strategies. (See the earlier post: 3 Powerful Keyword Strategies See also 5 Crucial Tags for Keywords) By optimizing your page for the keywords you are showing google that your landing page really is about the keyword you are bidding on.

Spice up your Ads: If you don't have a quality score of 9 or 10 you need to do some editing of your ad text. Congruence can only get you a quality score of 8 ( I have only seen this a few times 7 is much more common.) Add words that make people want to click on your ad so that it is more enticing. The specifics of that are for a later post so subscribe to my feed to be sure you don't miss it!

All the tools are there, but you need to understand how to effectively use them to make you successful. This post is for Beginning Adwords users, but I will cover the basis of the Adwords bidding strategies that I use in my most advance campaigns.

Types of Keywords in Adwords

Broad match: Adwords Bidding Strategy that displays your ads any time your keyword is used in a search. Broad match is the default Adwords keyword because it ensures that your ad will show up as often as possible. Although this sounds like a good idea, it only hurts you if you aren't careful. Let's say you bid on Adwords Bidding Strategies, in a broad match format. Your ad could show up any time someone searches for any combination of those keywords in any order, or with any other word.

Exact match: The Adwords Bidding Strategy that only allows Adwords to display your ad if someone types in the exact phrase you are searching for. This is the best way to bid on keywords in the beginning. It gives you the most control over your budget, so you don't get any clicks from people who don't belong on your site.

Phrase match: The Adwords Bidding Strategy that allows Adwords to display your ad any time someone uses an specific phrase in their searches. This strategy gives you control over your traffic, but not complete control. If you bid on "Adwords Bidding Strategies", Adwords could display your ad any time someone searched Adwords Bidding Strategies, Great Adwords Bidding Strategies, Horrible Adwords Bidding Strategies, Adwords Bidding Strategies with any other word. This can be great if you carry a large line of a certain brand or service, and you wan to quickly bid on all of the product searches in that line.

Negative Keywords: The Adwords Keyword type that prevents Adwords from displaying your ad when the words you type in are included. In your negative keywords list you would include any word that you never want Adwords to display your ad for. A good standard negative keyword is '-free'. If you are not giving your products away for free, you should prevent Adwords from displaying your ads when the word free appears in a search.

Adwords Keyword Types Notation:

Broad Match: Keyword
Exact Match: [Keyword]
Phrase Match: "Keyword"
Negative: -Keyword

Adwords Bidding Strategies:

Never use Broad Match Keywords. Every client I have ever done consulting for has wasted at least some money because of broadmatch keywords. One of the worst cases I have seen was a company I did consulting for that sold Outdoor sporting goods, mostly hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and camping equipment. They did not carry fishing supplies, hunting supplies, or several other outdoor sporting goods. They had bid on the broad match keywords 'Outdoor Equipment', 'Sports Equipment', 'Outdoor Sports' etc. It sounds logical, but at the end of 12 months they had wasted over $10,000 on keywords like:

Outdoor Computer
Fishing Equipment
Kayaking Equipment
Outdoor Weddings

There was a list of about 400 keywords that they had wasted money on, just because of the broad match keywords they had used.

It takes more time, but by using only exact match keywords you have the most control over your Adwords Campaigns.

A more advanced Adwords Strategy

If you have a keyword phrase that your site is highly relevant to, Phrase Match, combined with Negative Match is the best option for you. Bid on your main keyword phrase, and then list all of the negative keywords that you can think of to ensure you avoid unqualified traffic.

There are campaign level settings you can use to save you money, and keyword bidding strategies (that I will cover in the next post) that you can use that will save you money, and make your Adwords campaigns worth while. This post will focus on the Campaign level Adwords settings that will save you money as a beginner in Adwords. If you are optimizing your Adwords campaigns, skip to the advanced posts.

1-Adwords Strategies - Campaign Settings

In the new Adwords layout you will Click on the "Campaigns" Tab, then the "Settings" Tab. The two tabs are pictured below:

When you choose the Adwords campaign you will be able to choose from several categories:
General
Audience*
Networks and devices
Bidding and Budget
Advanced Settings

The only change you need to make initially is in the Networks and devices section. The other Adwords settings are set by default in a way that will help you the most. We will return to these settings in a post on optimizing your PPC Campaigns

Ideal Networks and Devices Settings in Adwords:

By default the "All available sites and devices" radio bubble is checked. This means that for any search that has your keywords in it, all google searches for your keyword, for people using any device. This makes sense for Google, because it puts your ads out in as many places as possible. This Adwords default setting doesn't make sense for you, now or ever.

In the beginning it is best to focus just on the google searches that people are using, on their computers (unless you have a mobile targeted version of your site, then any device is fine). In the beginning we want to find out the search engine keywords that will be the most profitable for your business, so click on the "Let Me choose" Bubble. The best settings for a beginner will look like this (if you have a mobile site, leave the iPhones and other... bubble checked):

Bidding and Budget Adwords Settings

Based on the strategy I have talked about, you want to get about 100 visitors a day. If your keyword bid is $ .10 you will have a $10 per day budget. That is a good place to start, but you may need to adjust it once you set your keyword bids.

Your Adwords bidding settings are by default, the best for both you and Adwords. The Position Preferences are also set to be the best for you for now, by default. For now, leave the setting to "Focus on clicks, manual maximum CPC bidding". Although Maximum is a scary word it just means that Adwords will place your ad whenever your maximum bid price is enough to get a spot on the page. I will cover that in detail in the next post.

Advanced Settings

Advanced settings include scheduling, placements, and ad rotation settings. Again, the default Adwords settings are fine for a beginner. Once you know the times of day that you get the most conversions, you can focus all of your advertising budget on those times of the day, but when you are starting, you want them to be as even as possible throughout the day.

Adwords Campaign Settings Conclusion

For a beginner, the only change you need to make is in the Networks and Devices Settings. The rest is already set for you. In the next post We will cover to Optimizing your Bidding in Adwords.

But somehow, every time I mentioned it in a consultation I would hear, "What's That?" And although I was always tempted to gasp, or laugh, I kept my mouth shut. But not this time. For all of you reading this thinking "What are Pay Per Clicks:" or any variation on the question I am going to let it out a little. Three, simple, one-syllable words, what is there not to understand? Now I realize that the question is probably based more on fear or disbelief than on a lack of understanding. But the concept really is as simple as the name implies, you pay for every click that comes to you.

Without fail the next line is a confident, "Oh no, not yet, I want to wait for a while before I start Pay Per Clicks. I want to find out what is going to be successful before I spend money on traffic, that might be wasted!" Now there is a legitimate misunderstanding that we can work with.

With Pay Per Clicks, There is no Such Thing as Wasted Traffic
With Pay Per Clicks there is never be a wasted visitor. Unfortunately, that does not mean that everyone will buy. It does mean that ever visitor to your site tells you something about your site. you can see which words people are clicking on more, even if all you do is set up a single campaign, with a few words in it.

But with the tools that are available you can see where people are coming from, what keywords they are using to find you, where people are clicking on your site, which pages on your site people are leaving from, which keywords are leading to conversions, and much, much more. Paid traffic is SO valuable because you can analyze EVERY piece of it. It seems like these things are all bonuses that you get free with the traffic that you are buying, but it should be the other way around. With Pay Per Clicks you are buying information about a your website, and you get traffic, and potential sales as a bonus.

After successfully setting up Pay Per Click campaigns, analytics, goals, and conversion tracking you will have enough information about your business to make decisions based on fact, rather than hypothesis, or hope. Pay per clicks tell you which keywords should be the focus of your link building, and on site optimization. Your pay per click campaigns will tell you gender, times of day, and regions that you should target your marketing toward. In short, your pay per click campaigns take full advantage of the power of Internet Marketing, and hopefully you will have a bonus of some sales, or contacts along the way.

The Other Way to Do it...
Now, Let's be honest. it is possible to learn all of this information without ever starting a Pay Per Click campaign. You can build a site, build links to it, optimize to the most popular keywords, set up an analytics campaign, and see what your traffic does that way. For MOST websites, this method yeilds a slow trickle of traffic within the first month, significant, usable traffic within 6 Months, and real, actionable data, within the first year. With Pay Per Clicks, you can have significant traffic this week, and solid actionable data by the end of the month. And after all, time is money.

Conversion: What you Want Your Traffic to Do BEFORE it Comes
This will be different for every website. You need to decide if you want people to fill out a contact for, buy a product, sign up for a newsletter, or simply click to another page. This is your Conversion. Then you can start sending traffic to your site. In my years teaching SEO and Internet Marketing I found that a good range to start with is 100 visitors per day. It gives you an easy percentage to start with. 3 conversions is a 3% conversion rate, and it won't cost outrageous amounts of money.

Once you have 100 visitors per day, you can begin to dial in your website. But that is for another post. First focus on getting your Pay Per Click campaign set up to send 100 visitors per day to your website.

Where to Start with Pay Per Clicks
So, if time is important to you, and you are building a website for something more than a hobby, then you need to start with your pay per clicks. In the next few days I will focus on setting up all of the basic tools so you can make the most of Pay Per Clicks, for tonight I am just going to give you a place to start.

I have found out how to make money on the internet from anywhere, anytime, whether I work or not, so the only way to be sure you don't miss something is to subscribe to this blog. But it is up to you, if you wan to check back every day, please do.

My Career has been SEO, I started as an SEO consultant teaching people individually over the phone while running my own sites, I moved into Programming Websites for an E-Commerce website giant, and Followed by a year in E-Mail Marketing, and then I started my own SEO Firm. I have done Freelance jobs as small as $1,000 and pushing 6 figures.

With my site ThsSniche.com I learned the tricks of local SEO. It is still one of my top revenue generators, especially in the down economy. I give local small businesses a web page for just $50. It is a one time fee, and they have the page for life. I meet with people over the phone about what they want on their page, and then I build it for them when I am off the phone. Most of the small business pages are number one for the keywords business owners chose to target.

The SEO industry has a bad reputation, mostly for good reason. My goal in this blog is to point readers to credible information, and valuable tools that are out there. I will also post up links and ads to awesome companies that I find. There is valuable information out there, I know where it is, and every day (ideally) I will post some of it up on this blog.

Please follow this blog to read more, and comment to keep me on my toes!

There are two main reasons for building links. Links build your online presence and page rank, and they can drive traffic to your website.

One of the major purposes of Building Links is to build your online presence and Page Rank. Simply put, the more inbound links you have going to your website, the more important google will rank you. (see Page Rank for more details)

There are a couple things to focus on when seeking links. First, a page rank of 3 or higher will send links to you that will help build your page rank (read more in the Page Rank Article). You also want to focus on the anchor text of the links.

Anchor text is the word or words that are linked to your site. If you are selling men’s scuba diving watches, then you would want the text that is linked to be “men’s scuba diving watches.” Often you will see “Click Here” as the anchor text. This doesn’t hurt, but it doesn’t help the page as much as it could either. It is a good practice to try to use your main keywords as anchor text in the links that you request from directories, reciprocal links, and other sources.

Submitting to Directories

The fastest way to find pages that will link to you is to submit to Live Directories. Live directories organize webpages into categories. A human editor, rather than a search engine bot will review the sites they admit to the directory and determine which category to place it in. Many people prefer live directories to search engines because a real person determines where pages belong. When you submit to live directories you need to keep in mind that a human editor will be looking at your webpage, so you must adhere to the submission guidelines. Here are some links to live directories you can submit to.

http://www.web-directories.ws/

Directory Submission guidelines

Directories all have their own unique set of guidelines that you should follow. But in general, you won’t have problems if you just describe your site without using marketing words. Remember, the primary purpose of submitting to Live directories is to get a link, not to convince its users to buy your product.

Remember to focus on Directories with a page rank 3 or higher, so that the link will help your site.

Reciprocal Linking

Another name for Reciprocal Linking is Link Trading. This was one of the first link building strategies that became popular. It is a good way to build relevant links, and you can control the anchor text of the link. When considering a potential link trading partner, remember a couple things about what linking means:

What is on the page you are sending people to? If you are sending visitors to a page that has your competitors links on it, you may be sending your customers to your competition.
What are the keywords on the page you are linking to? In the most recent analysis of search engine algorithms people have found that the content of the pages you link to will affect your page rank. They figure that your page is more relevant to your keywords, only if you link to pages that focus on the same keywords.

Writing Articles

Article directories, and Press Releases are great places to get links. These strategies do take more thought, but often times, writing articles create higher quality links. Basically what you do is write an article about whatever topic you are looking for links about. If you want links for Scuba Diving Watches, you would write an article about scuba diving watches. Within the body of the article you will want to create a link back to your site.

Then you can post your article to article directories where people go to find articles for their sites, blogs, or magazines. Then, when they pick up your article for use, they also place the link back to your site. Each time this happens you get a new link.

Here is a list of article directory sites you can use:

http://www.ezinearticles.com
http://www.goarticles.com
http://www.webpronews.com
http://site-reference.com
http://www.articledashboard.com
http://www.topica.com/lists/free_articles
http://www.articlesbase.com
http://www.articles.web.com
http://articles.easywordpress.com
http://articles.directorygold.com
http://www.afroarticles.com/article-dashboard/
http://content.infowizards.com
http://www.articlefriendly.com
http://www.articlewheel.com/
http://www.top-affiliate.com/articles
http://www.articles-hub.com
http://nero.byethost15.com
http://www.submityournewarticle.com
http://www.articlerich.com
http://www.articlecafe.net
http://www.your-free-satellite.com/index-2.html
http://www.add-articles.com
http://www.articleblotter.com
http://www.1articleworld.com
http://www.abcarticledirectory.com/
http://www.earticlesonline.com
http://www.earticlesonline.com
http://www.article.com
http://www.articlesnatch.com
http://www.talkinmince.com
http://www.JustArticles.com/
http://www.article-buzz.com/
http://freezinesite.com
http://www.tips.com.my

Other Strategies:

This is just the beginning of what you can do to build links. As we get into more advanced strategies we will cover more about link building, and more advanced methods of determining the value of a link. Be sure to look for other sources of links that pop up. Some other major sources are blogs, forums, and Social networking sites. Read the respective articles to learn more about the strategy.

Several of my clients in the past have asked me the question, "Why does Google care how many links I have?" The answer is that the internet is really just the world wide popularity contest. Every link you get is like a vote for your site as the best site on the internet about a certain topic. The more votes you have, the more popular you are, and the more Google likes you... Honest.

It sounds ridiculous, but look at it this way: you wouldn't send your precious web traffic somewhere else, unless you thought the place you were sending it was valuable right? After all, you work hard for traffic, and sometimes you even pay for traffic. If you are going to link to another site, you must think that the content is quite valuable. Since in the end, Google want to provide people with the best content on the internet, they feel like the more links a given website has for a certain keyword, the better the content must be.

Quality of Links

Unlike all men in Thomas Jefferson's bold statement in the Declaration of Independence, all links are not created equal. The inequality of links today is even more evident today than when I started my first website, but the same type of standards apply. Among the biggest things to look at in determining the value of a link is the Page Rank of the page (Page Rank is going to be a later Post). Sites with a page rank of 3 or higher will help your site, while sites with a pagerank of 0-2 will have no effect.

In a Perfect World...

In a perfect world I would have all links from Page Rank 10 sites, and my competition would have no links. Then I would be guaranteed the number one spot for my keywords. Unfortunately, links from page rank 10 sites are quite rare, and my competition has just as much of a chance at getting link as I do.

As in all things on the internet, it comes down to the quality of your content. Other website owners want to send their visitors to the best content on the web almost as much as Google does. So, the better your content is, the more sites are going to link to you.

In Short a Link is a Vote

The more links you have the more likely your content is to be the stuff end users are looking for. A link is a sign (more so in days gone by) that a real human liked the content of your site enough to send people to it.

One more hit to this dead horse and then I am done, I swear. Look at it this way. If your meta says you are about children's play things, and your content agrees, and another website links to you for children's play things, it is a safe bet for search engines to send users to your website when they are searching for children's play things.

Secondary to your actual content, they will also use several different types of tags from your code in determining what your page is about. The 5 tags we have listed below are tags that you should use on every web page to help solidify what your page is about to the search engines. Some people say that this SEO strategy is dead, but in the end, it can't hurt to have it done, and I have web pages that are currently ranked number one based solely on content and tags.

Title tag. This is the title of your web page. This is sometimes referred to as the Meta Title Tag. Usually, the title you create will appear as the Blue portion, or the linked portion in Search Engine Results Pages. The space you have for your title is limited to keep SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) looking clean. You have about 8 words. Those 8 words should make your site stand out from the other 9 sites listed on the SERP. The best way to do this is to use the main keyword for the page 1-2 times if you can. Google even bolds the words in your title that match the words people search for so your site will stant out more.

Meta Description - Again this tag is limited to a number of words that you can use. your description is generally between 25-30 words long. you should use your main keyword for the page at least twice in your description, and you should use complete sentences, since your potential customers will see it.

Meta Keywords - This is your opportunity to tell search engines what you think your page is about. Your end user will never see this unless they view your source code, and so it does not need to be complete sentences. You just wan to focus on telling the search engine which keywords they should look for on your page.

Although you are allowed as many keywords as you would like, it is best to limit yourself to about three on each page. Search Engines want to see that each keyword makes up 4 percent of the content on your page. If you don't use keyword nesting strategies, you will end up with 12% of the total text of your page as keyword phrases. That is 3 out of every 25 words! It is going to sound terrible, and your potential customers will leave.

Alternate text or Alt Tags. Alternate text originated when the internet was much slower. So slow, that many internet users would turn off the images to speed things up. In the place of the images web designers began to add alternate text to describe the image. Today, we call Alternate text, Alt Tags. Like the meta, you should try to use your keywords in your Alt Tags. You should have Alt tags for every image of your page, but avoid the red flags that go off if you use your keywords in all of your Alt Tags. You don't want to be listed as a spammer, so you should only use a single keyword for up to three images.

Headline Tags or H1 Tags. The name of this tag describes exactly what it is. It actually comes from the predecessor to the internet, newspapers. Like the headline of a newspaper article, the headline of a web page should tell people what the page is about. By including your main keyword phrase in your headline tag, you are telling your visitors and search engines, what the bulk of your web page is about.

Application of the 5 Tags

If you don't have some type of website builder, you are going to have to know some basic codes to add these tags to your website. Many website builders will add these tags to your code for you automatically.
