Dealing with Mange Pet Problems

If you’re looking for Mange medicine for your afflicted pet, you should absolutely consult your veterinarian. Dogs and cats are the most prone to the condition, which is caused by mites. It is also known by other names such as Ear Mite Infections, Scabies, Red Mange or Cheyletiella.

If you are dealing with one of the conditions more severe forms, Demodex Mites, Ear Mites or Sarcoptic Mites, then you definitely need to consult your veterinarian sooner than later, as these variations can cause your pet to become seriously ill as a result of them. In addition to the previously mentioned forms there are many other kinds of Mites which can pose a threat to your pets – and to livestock as well.

Sarcoptic Mange

Sarcoptic mange or scabies can affect dogs, cats and even humans amongst other animals. The Notoedres mite cause intense irritation and itching in humans and animals. They can be transferred from the pet on to the human though if the pet is disinfected on time the symptoms would disappear within a few weeks in the humans. The mites burrow themselves under the skin in the ear, face and elbows. Crusty skin on the ear is a sign of scabies in dogs.

It is important to treat these conditions as quickly as possible, as the discomfort can become quite severe. Seepage, scabs or boils may begin to appear as well as balding skin patches. If that happens, the vet will likely have to do a biopsy to check for other types of infections that may have developed.

Steroid creams such as cortisone can be used to relieve some of the itching, as well as the redness and irritation. Bathing the animal is also recommended, using dandruff shampoos followed by any vet-recommended insecticides.

The Demodex variation of the infection is not contagious, but you still want to get it checked out and treated as quickly as possible, because you run the risk of causing a secondary infection in your pet if you don’t. With Demodex, your pet will experience the same itching, irritation and discomfort as with the other types of Mange, so of course you want to relieve your pet from that in the fastest time.

When a pet has a weakened immune system, he will be more prone to contracting Mange and also slower to recover. But, luckily, in most cases, pets that are healthy and not experiencing any hormonal changes will recover fairly quickly from the condition.

Vets would recommend treatment to ensure safe recovery and that includes boosting the dog’s immune system with tonics and vitamins. Baths with a Benzoyl peroxide shampoo would help the pet.

Ear mites cause intense itching and discharge in the ear in dogs and cats. Cats are more sensitive to chemicals hence it’s important to consult the vet in how to safely treat the feline.

Several Mange Treatments

There are all types of treatments for pets with Mange, including homeopathic and allopathic remedies. Before deciding on a treatment however, always consult your vet first. If you take proper care of your pet, including regularly administering immune-boosting vitamins and cleansing baths, then hopefully, you won’t have to deal with mange for too long at all.

The Veterinary strength Sarcoptic Mange 2 oz Combo combines the power of veterinary strength products with a gentle, safe, non-toxic mange-combating formula perfect for treating smaller breeds of animals (under 10 pounds) with mild cases of mange.

If your dog has mange and needs a remedy or medicine to help, you can find a mange spray. There are tons of mange medicine that you can find on the Internet that could help.

Question On Sarcotpic Mange

Hi There Again,
Here I have yet another question…
I have been treating my dogs for Sarcoptic Mange after my Maltese began loosing his fur…Long story short he was being treated for allergies bu my vet since october, I got a second opinion from another vet after I realized my other dogs were scratching, they found scabei (mites) in the skin scrape now I am treating all my dogs.
The meds and dip have been working great and my dogs look so much healthier and happier especially my old boy who lost most of his fur beacuse of all this. I herd it can pass to my rabbits and cats…:( My rabbits have no contact with my dogs so Im not that worried about them, but my cats walk about the yard, they dont come in direct contact but I just want to know if I could use the same dip which is called DEMADEX (I have put it on the link below) and its to treat Sarcoptic and Demratric Mange plus some other things in dogs. Can I dilute it in a spray bottle and spray it on my cats? I have two and Turkish Angora who loves pleaying with water and my Siamese who hates it! So my question is can I use the dogs formula which is the DEMADEX Rinse put it in a spray bottle and spray it on my cats? Revolution doesn’t control Mange on cats just dogs. I am using Advocate which the vet recommended as it also controls mange.
Please let my know if I cant what else can I do? Can I make a home mix myself??
What about Malaban? Could I use that? Its simular to Demadex although Demadex is more thorough.
Thanks Everyone I would greatly appreciate anything
I cannot wait till the day all this is over…I have owned dogs all my life and have never had anything like this before

What I am Using Now For Sarcoptic Mange

http://dstore.com.au/pets/Demadex-Wash-50ml/1084662.html

Malaban

http://www.thevetshed.com.au/product_info.php/products_id/1370

If it helps my dogs are all under the 5kg mark so I dilute 5mls of Demadex to 1 liter of water according to my vet.

Thanks again!!!

I have a cat that had sarcoptic mange…more common in dogs, but my cat also has a non specific immune disorder. My cat was treated with I think Ivermetrix, which is indicated for dogs. He recovered, but was under vet supervision, as dog medicine is usually not indicated for cats. Cats are very sensitive to all kinds of chemicals, meds, etc. My point being, no home remedies for cats.

Sarcoptic Mange Treatment

Mange is a rather common disease in household pets.
Dogs are primarily susceptible to two forms of mange, Demodectic mange (red mange) and Sarcoptic mange. Demodectic mange is generally seen in dogs less than two years of age. These mange mites are passed to puppy’s skin from their mothers. Demodectic mange mites live in the hair and oil (sebaceous) follicles of the skin. The first signs of this disease are patchy areas of hair loss about the head and forelegs, which do not itch and do not appear inflamed. These areas may spontaneously resolve or become larger until a large area of the pet’s skin is involved. It is considerably rarer in cats. A few of these parasites are present in the skin of many or all normal dogs. However dogs which develop disease have a defect in their immune system (T-cell defect) and can not keep the number of mites under control. The only product approved for use on Demodectic mange in the United States is amitraz (Mitaban). This concentrated liquid is diluted to a dip and the entire animal is immersed and scrubbed in the solution every two weeks until no living parasites can be seen under a microscope. A compound named benzyl benzoate cream was once used to treat small areas of infection. It is no longer believed to be effective. I will sometimes mix a 10% solution of Amitraz in propylene glycol and have the owner first cleanse and then massage this solution into isolated lesions. I have had good success in curing small areas of Demodectic mange in this way.

The effectiveness of treatment is hard to evaluate because small lesions often go away by themselves. Shar Pei dogs are notorious for their susceptibility to Demodectic mange. When amitraz (Mitaban) dips fail to halt the infection, I have had good success in placing these dogs on daily oral ivermectin. This product is sold as Ivomec 1% and the dose I use is 1ml (cc or approximately 15-20 drops) per110 lbs body weight. This comes out to 200 mcg/kg of body weight. Ivermectin may take up to a year to completely cure the dog. In severe cases, secondary bacterial skin infection is severe and subcutaneous lymph nodes enlarge with mites present in these nodes.

The second common form of mange in dogs, other pets (and wild animals) is Sarcoptic mange. This microscopic spider-like mite burrows through the layers of the skin causing an intense itch and streaks of reddened skin. After a month or so the skin becomes very crusty. It is spread from one mature dog to another by contact or by contact with objects the infected dog has touched. Humans in contact with these pets will often begin to itch too. This disease in man was once called the seven year itch. It is the disease that back-woods folk and farmers used to cure by rubbing the dog with burnt motor oil. Do not attempt this! The gentlest way of curing this disease (but the smelliest way) in all species of animals is with lime sulfur dips. Oral or injectable ivermectin cures the disease very well too. However, Ivermectin can be toxic in cats. Besides dogs, I see this disease in cats, hedgehog’s raccoons and squirrels.

A third form of mange, psoroptic mange, I see most often in rabbit ears and the area surrounding the ears. All ear-mite medicines cure this disease but the ears often need a soothing antibiotic corticosteroids cream for a week or two to heal.

Forms of Mange

A form of mange that I see in budgerigars (parakeets) and canaries is knemidocoptic mange. It affects their legs, the base of the beak and their vents. The skin in these areas is thickened and flaky. It responds very well to ivermectin or oily topical products containing rotenone (derris root & cube resin) such as Goodwinol. Goodwinol is difficult to obtain these days, but the active ingredient, rotenone, can be purchased as an organic rose and vegetable insecticide and mixed with margarine.

The reason most mange can be treated with any non-toxic oily product is that mange mites, being arachnids, breathe through openings (sphericals) along their body. Any substance which plugs up these pores kills the mites. The exception is Demodectic mites which live so deeply within hair follicles that oily substances do not seem to affect them.

Best Mange Treatment

Pets’BestRx Sarcoptic Mange Treatment Spray targets and eliminates Sarcoptic mange, while Sulfinex Cream provides additional protection to nourish and heal the skin. The colloid-based Sarcoptic Mange Treatment Spray solution penetrates deeply into your pet’s skin to attack Sarcoptic mange-affected skin. This provides your pet with soothing relief; great even for Sarcoptic mange in smaller animals such as birds, rodents, and reptiles. Give your pet a double dose of protection!

Demodectic Mange Treatments

I have taken her to the vet and they say the dips will help but if it’s toxic to her health shouldn’t i be trying to find another option?

Demodectic Mange Treatment Options

The treatment IS EXPENSIVE. and frontline and advantix are NOT an option. this form of mange is herreditary and is caused when the puppy has an immature immune system, not a stressed immune system. and we haven’t let it go for too long as some have suggested. we have taken her to numerous vets before one figured out what is wrong. she can’y die from this she is just beyond very uncomfortable. i just want to make sure there aren’t any other LEGIT solutions before we pay over 400 something for a treatment that is hazardess to her health.

Just do the dips, they are not the best but it will clearly help her in this case. Then, see if there is any preventative things you can do so this doesn’t happen again. Good luck and I hope your pup feels better!

She is on an oral dose every week for four weeks. Right now she is in her crate, and not a very happy puppy. I dont want to get it or my daughter or other dog. So I will keep her in there. But how often do we have to wash bedding, etc.???
She is on the iv (Sp? oral dosage). I dont let her on my daughter’s bed or mine. I washed her bedding in her crate tonight and wondered if i needed to do that every day? Also, my other dog was checked today and he didnt show signs of it, but they put him on meds to be safe. The poor baby looks at me so sad wondering why we cant play…. she goes back in 4 weeks for a recheck. She hasnt lost any hair yet. They found it in scabs on the tip of her ears.

We dont Treat Oraly at our Shelter…Hmmmmm.I imagine They are treating with Ivomec. We generly Dip or use Revolution..In those cases I feel Safe letting them be with other dogs and taking off my gloves after a week.If You and your Kid get this Its Scabies in people..I got it once from a Mangy Dog and it is Hell! How many doses has she had? The Bedding I would Wash as Needed as the Mites dont really spread as much as you think That way.I’m Talking about the Dogs Bedding..If she has been on ya’lls Beds Wash Them All and Dont let her on until theMites are Dead…A For Sure Sign The Mites are Dead are when Hair starts growing back in the places she lost it.At that point She can be treated as Normal!
Good Luck
