A newborn baby girl was found alive and had her umbilical cord still attached when she was left in a milk box at a bus stop along Jalan Air Hitam-Johor Baru near SMK Munsyi Abdullah yesterday morning. The baby died 30 minutes later at the Kulai Hospital after a passerby rushed her there.

40-year-old labourer Zulkifli Samsi, father of three, was nearby at 4:50am when he saw a man behaving suspiciously, left a box on the bus stop seat and took off in a Proton Wira vehicle.

When Zulkifli examined the contents of the box, he was surprised to find the baby with her fingers moving. Although he managed to rush the baby to the hospital, the doctors who received her said she was hardly breathing and pronounced her dead at 5:30am.

Kulaijaya police chief Zulkefly Yahya urged those with information on the baby or the man to contact the Kulaijaya district police headquarters at 07-6637222 or the Johor police hotline at 07-2212999.

Mohamad Zamri Ibrahim, a cloth merchant, and his brother-in-law Mohd Suhaimi Yusoff were awarded RM41,500 and RM31,500 respectively in damages at the Sessions Court on Thursday for wrongful arrest. They were detained in connection with the murder case of Nurin Jazlin Jazimin three years ago.

36-year-old Mohamad Zamri and 31-year-old Mohd Suhaimi filed suit on 19 June 2009 with ASP Loh Pei Pei, the Inspector general of Police and the government as defendants. They claimed that after their arrests, they were hit, stepped on, kicked and bashed up by the police before they were questioned. As a result, they claimed that they injuries, stress, odium and contempt.

Judge Sabariah Othman awarded the damages after reviewing the submissions by defence counsellor Azmer Md Saad, who represented the two men.

Sabariah said Mohamad Zamri was awarded the damages based on a police testimony that he was not the suspect in the case. It was ruled that his arrest was wrongful and without reasonable grounds. Mohd Suhaimi was awarded RM31,500 in damages because there were reasonable grounds for his arrest, Sabariah said.

The victim was five years old when her father started molesting and raping her until she was 16 years old. The 42-year-old man’s actions were finally brought to justice when he was sentenced to 20 years of jail time and 6 strokes of the cane.

Mohd Yani was charged with raping his daughter at their Taman Sri Pandan home on 25 April 2007 at about 5:30pm. The previous sentence of 12 years’ jail and 3 strokes of the cane made last year was appealed. DPP Farah Ezlin Yusop Khan asked for the heavier sentence as there were reports from the victim’s school counseller that she had suffered trauma as a result of her father’s misdeeds.

Under Section 376B of the Penal Code, high court judge Rosilah Yop then sentenced Mohd Yani up to the maximum sentence possible for his offence.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said that the crime index for the first four months of this year has been reduced beyond the initial target set. He said it has been reduced by 15.3% and street crimes have dropped by 38.7% compared to the same period last year.

After launching the 1Malaysia logo on Tuesday, he said the ministry has achieved this significant reduction despite the upward trend from 2006 to 2009. He said the important factors that led to this achievement were by identifying crime hot spots and via the five main principles of the Key Performance Index and 55 initiatives drafted through crime labs.

The police have had deployed 14,444 police, 3,160 Rela and Civil Defence Forces at 50 crime hotspots and intends to install 500 closed-circuit television cameras by the end of this year.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Senator Datuk Seri Idris Jala said the expected crime index reduction according to the National Key Results Area for crime was 5% and what the police accomplished is impressive. The target reduction for street crimes was 20%.

A drug lab operated out of an apartment in Bukit Jambul was busted by police while RM2 million worth of drugs were seized. It is believed to be the biggest heroin drug bust in Penang so far this year.

Four hours earlier, two men in their 40s were arrested during a drug transaction which led police to the drug lab. There, they found 27.9kg of heroin with “pandan flavouring”, 0.46kg of ketamine, 85kg of caffeine, 25 bottles of flavouring and various equipment.

Police found caught the suspects with 4.5kg of heroin and seized their Hyundai Atos and Honda Civic vehicles. One of the men had two previous criminal cases.

State Narcotics Department chief superintendent R.S.S. Batumalai said drug syndicates are trying to mix heroin of various flavourings to improve their product offers.

An Assistant Superintendent police officer who is attached to the Sungai Buloh police air unit has allegedly “flashed” his pistol at some patrons of a pub in Puchong. The policeman was drinking with his friends at the pub on Wednesday night and even allegedly consumed drugs in view of other customers.

When some customers tried to tell the group not to take drugs, the irritated policeman opened his jacket to show his weapon on his hip.

Feeling threatened, the customers called the police who arrived shortly to arrest the group.

Initial investigations showed that the policeman and his three friends tested positive for drugs. The officer’s gun was confiscated and he is out on bail.

The policeman who fatally shot 14-year-old Aminulrasyid Amzah during a 6km car chase last month was charged in court yesterday under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. 48-year-old Corporal Jenain Subi of the Shah Alam police headquarters claimed trial to the charge of committing the offence between 1:10am to 2:00am along Jalan Tarian 11/2, Section 11 on 26 April 2010.

Aminulrasyid was allegedly trying to reverse and ram his car into several policemen who were chasing him. He was with his 15-year-old friend, Azamuddin Omar, when he was allegedly shot dead by the police.

If found guilty, Jenain may be jailed for a maximum term of 30 years and can also be fined.

The judge set bail at RM10,000 and fixed 10 June 2010 for the case to be mentioned.

Earlier in court, DPP Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar had motioned for a bail of RM35,000 to be set due to the severity of the case. Defence counsel Salim Bashir said that Jenain was still an active police officer and earned a monthly salary of RM3,000. Together with his wife’s salary of RM1,800 as a teacher, he said the initial bail amount was too high for Jenain to raise and thus had to be remanded.

Jenain joined the police force in 1985 and had served at the Shah Alam Court complex from 1996 to 2008.

A snatch thief who may have caused the death of a man at a restaurant five months ago and committed over 300 thefts since then has been arrested. The 22-year-old suspect was caught at a stall in Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras, on 25 April 2010.

The suspect worked with an accomplice, targeting single victims wearing chains or carrying handbags. He was previously detained under the Emergency Ordinance for another murder case when he was 18 years old.

Police believe that with this arrest they can solve 60 snatch theft cases reported in Cheras. They are on the lookout for the suspect’s accomplice.

On 8 December 2009, 33-year-old Abdul Rahman Mohd Kalidin was riding on his motorcycle with his wife, Noriha Abd Rahman, along Jalan Perkasa 2, Taman Maluri when the suspect allegedly tried to snatch Noriha’s handbag. As a result, Abdul Rahman died on the spot from serious head injuries succumbed when his motorcycle crashed into the wall of a house while Noriha fractured her right arm and leg.

At a joint press conference with Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Idris Jala said that crime reduction was set as one of the targets to achieve in the National Key Result Areas because it was to address its rising trend. He said that the national crime ratio is not at an alarming level.

The ratio is 750 cases per 100,000 population, which he said is lower than some developed countries like Britain, which has 7,500 cases per 100,000.

Jala urged the media to help reduce the crime worries of the public by highlighting the role of the police and that of the Home Ministry to fight crime.

Hishammuddin added that Malaysia and Australia had agreed to set up a Joint Working Committee on Counter Terrorism to foster greater cooperation in fighting terrorism in this region. This arose from the success of the existing work down between the two countries in the area of anti-human trafficking. The committee was agreed upon during his meeting with Australian Anti-Terrorism Ambassador Bill Paterson yesterday.

Between August last year and March this year, Malaysian police was able to arrest some top leaders of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eeelam, known for terrorism acts.

A 14-year-old orphan was allegedly raped several times in a secondary school by six classmates at the canteen, school field and classroom over a period of three weeks.

It is believed that the group of classmates raped her in groups or one after another.

A week after the orphan was raped at an empty classroom during recess last Tuesday, she found the courage to notify a counselor from her orphanage, where she has been living at since the age of nine.

A medical check on the victim at the Selayang Hospital revealed that she is now a month pregnant and that a pencil was inserted into her private parts. She had complained of pain while she urinated.

Hours after a police report was lodged on Monday, the classmate was detained at the school. Under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape, he has been remanded by the police until 26 April 2010.
