In 1884 a school master named Edwin Abbott Abbott wrote the novella “Flatland: A Romance in Many Dimensions.” The book explored what it would be like to live in a two dimensional universe, and speculated that there might be other dimensions. The Abott’s story lay in obscurity until it was rediscovered in the early 20th century after Einstein wrote “The Theory of General Relativity” which discussed the possibility of a fourth dimension. Since then several films and animations have been made based on Abbott’s novella.
This month’s story revisits Abbott’s flat universe from the point of view of a down and out private detective in search of his first big case.

Maya and Tim live in a future that is powered by coal, kids over 8 must work for a living, and reality is not what it seems.
Tim’s parents died after an apparently random traffic accident, leaving him alone, and in debt for the medical expenses. Unable to pay, his liabilities were auctioned off to a family who owns a café, where he now has to work until their daughter, Maya, finishes college.
When two mysterious customers from Europa Café show up in the lobby of the building that hides Anneita’s secret archive she forces Tim and Maya to leave. While on their way back to the café Maya feels that they are being followed, and when they arrive at the Europa they find it closed and Maya’s mother missing.

The week’s story is based on the idea proposed by physicist David Bohm that the Universe is might be similar to a holographic projection and discussion around our house on recent news headlines that graphically point out how things don’t always go as planned.

Tim’s parents died after an apparently random traffic accident, leaving him alone, and in debt for the medical expenses. Unable to pay, his liabilities were auctioned off to a family who owns a café, where he now has to work until their daughter, Maya, finishes college.
After receiving an unexpected message warning him to check the server logs at the café, Tim and Maya go to meet the mysterious sender, who initially appears to be a bag lady, but is in fact from an old eccentric wealthy Way Station family. She takes Tim and Maya to the disused top floor of the Ashton Towers, where she reveals her involvement in a hundred year old society that is trying to understand the actions of an elusive and dangerous group which has been apparently changing history.
Tim’s gopher server project has inadvertently brought him, Maya and the café under the scrutiny of this organization and the Europa café’s future may be threatened as a result.

Orph The Emerald Planet is the second installment in a series of bedtime classics adapted to the Makeshift Stories universe. Based on the 1907 story by Laura E Richards The House with the golden Windows from a book of short stories with the same name, it presents the archetypal irony that grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence.
