One of the worst things about Quicktime (in my opinion) is that when I want to play a video it doesn’t play automatically play.

In older versions you have an option with in QuickTime’s preference pane to automatically play videos at first opening, but as of QuickTime X the option no-longer exists

This next trick only works in Snow Leopard in where the new QuickTime X app is found.

To run this trick open Terminal. This is found in Applications > Utilities.
With in Terminal type the following.

defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGPlayMovieOnOpen 1

This will turn the autoplay option on. Now restart your QuickTime Player, if it is open. Now when you play a video you should see that the movie plays on open.
If you want to reverse the process repeat the prosses but this time you want to replace the 1 with a 0

Although we all hope that Apple adds this option back to QuickTime X’s preference pane in an future update but who knows it is Apple after all.

I’m getting ready to install snow leopard here in a few weeks after I back everything up and I wanted to make sure that everything was in order, One of the things I came across while I was checking was to see if my mac was 64 bit compatible. Even though Snowie runns in 32 bit its not bad to be future proof
According to Apple all you have to do is look in your “About This Mac” from your Apple () menu, and seeing if the processor is a Intel Core 2 Duo or higher
But come on apple we want a more Geekier way of checking, Well… They have Muhahaha
So… The other way to check to see if your Mac is 64 bit compatible by using the command line. You will need to Launch terminal which is located in ‘/Applications/Utilities’ and type ’sysctl hw |grep 64bit’ Note: There is not a space after the vertical line.

After pressing enter you should see

hw.cpu64bit_capable: #

At the end of the string that is printed out there will be one of 2 numbers

0 which means the cpu is not 64 bit and 1 means it is 64 bit… YAY

As I was doing more research on the subject at had I found a cool app Called Startup Mode Selector the link is in the show notes.

What this neat little app does it shows whether you have a 32-bit or a 64-bit processor, 32-bit or a 64-bit EFI, MacOS X Kernel is set to boot in 32-bit or in 64-bit mode, MacOS X Kernel is running in 32-bit or in 64-bit mode, If your Mac officially supports booting a 64-bit kernel, it allows you to select whether you want to start the MacOS X Kernel in 32-bit or in 64-bit mode, and more

Not to brag or anything, but unless I’ve run Software Update, I rarely have to reboot my Mac, this might not be that exciting Mac users who have been running Macs for years, but as a recent Windows convert, I find this sweet and informative to check the uptime and reboot history of my Mac, it’s also easy to do and useful too for troubleshooting certain Mac problems.
Here’s how to do both via the Command Line:
browse to your “Application folder” and under “Utilitys” you will fined “Terminal”

To check your Macs uptime, simply type ‘uptime’ in the Terminal. On my mac I have it has been up for 6 Days, 23 hours, and 36 minutes. Thats a long time in windows years.

17:56 up 6 days, 23:36, 2 users, load averages: 0.21 0.18 0.18

Now to Check your Macs reboot history.

To check the reboot history of your Mac, type ‘last reboot’ or if that doesn’t work ‘last | grep reboot’ in the Terminal. This will provide you with the dates and times of the last reboots the machine has gone through.

I’m a terrible typist and once in a blue moon hit the Caps Lock key while aiming for something else. And on those extremely rare occasions where I actually want a run of Upper Case letters I seldom think to use Caps Lock, preferring to keep my finger on the Shift key instead.
But we all hate those people who JUST LOVE TO USE THE CAPS LOCK ALL THE TIME DO WE NOT?
I don’t and hate to be accused of being one, Well my next tip is about disabling the caps lock key altogether
In the depths of System Preferences lies a easily but overlooked option; to change what happens when you press a modifier key. Open System Preferences.

Go to the “Keyboard and Mouse” Preference Pane.
Make sure you’re on the “Keyboard” tab.
Click the “Modifier Keys” button. A window will appear where you can change what happens when you press the various modifier keys.
From the drop-down menu beside the Caps Lock key choose “No Action”.
Click OK. And the new setting is saved.
If you wish, close the System Preferences window.

Now when you type the “Caps Lock” key nothing happens. It’s dead as a door nail.

If you often find yourself changing file extensions, As I do, you might be tired of the annoying “Are you sure you want to change the extension” dialog box. I often end up changing the extensions of text files from .txt to .html or .php which I find that I do quite often.

Luckily, you can disable this warning quite easily. Just go to your Finder’s Preferences or Press “Command + ,” and click on the Advanced tab. Un-check the option labeled “Show warning before changing an extension”

Now when you attempt to change a file extension, Leopard will no longer nag you by inquiring if you’re really sure that’s what you wish to do.

Keep in mind that if you add the wrong extension to a document you may not be able to open the file until you change it back. Changing an extension does not convert a document into a different format.

Okay, so you’re working in a program which takes up every vertical inch of the screen, like Final Cut Pro or iMovie, and when you go to adjust something near the bottom, the Dock keeps popping up. Oh sure, you could move the Dock to where it’s anchored on the left or right side of the screen, but most people dont like the look or feel of having the dock on the sides of the screen. But what if you could move it temporarily to the left or right, and then put it back on the bottom when your done?, and do this with one click and one key?

Here’s how: Hold the Shift key, click on your Dock’s divider line (the one to the far right side of the Dock), and drag the Dock to the left or right side of your screen. Then, once you quit with the program, just Shift/click on that divider line and place it back on the bottom.

You can even shrink or enlarge the dock by clicking on the divider and move your mouse up to enlarge or move you mouse down to shrink the dock, man I can even see the dock
isnt that cool or what?

If you download a file from the web, you can usually find out exactly where that downloaded file came from, including the exact web address including down to the subfolders.
Select the file you downloaded and press “Command+I” or right click on the file and select “Get Info”.

Once the info dialog appears, click on the right-facing arrow beside “More Info” to expand that panel and it will display a “Where” from header, and to the right of that it will show the exact web address from which the file was originally downloaded.

Unfortunately the likes of Firefox and Opera do not have this feature built in, Firefox does have a plugin called Met.a thats in the beta stages and works quite well on a Mac, so if you want to go the way of out of the box this tip only works with Safari, Hey Apple knows whats good for its users Thanks Apple!

Even though Auto-tune – that funky robot effect that rules the radio – has been declared d e a d dead by none either than rap superstar than Jay-Z, people still went nuts over T-Pain’s Auto-tune app for the iPhone.
Weather you don’t have to have an iPhone or cant afford to pay hundreds of dollars for official Auto-tune software you can still get that great T-Pain sound. In fact, you can do it with an app that comes preloaded with almost every Mac, Garageband.

Open up Garageband and select “New Project”
Add a new track by hitting “Alt+Command+N” and choose “Real Instrument.” This is where you’ll be recording your vocals or importing previous recorded audio.
If you’re going to auto-tune yourself or a recording, you need a key to be in tune with. If you’re not sure, give the default Tempo of a C-major a try, and adjust up or down from there.
You can adjust the tempo by using the the options with in the LCD If you dont know how to enable the this option press “Ctrl+Command+F” and this will show the tempo with in the LCD

Click the scissors icon or “Command+E” to open up the editing palette. Select “No Effect” and slide the “Enhance Tuning” setting all the way to max. Also, check “Limit to Key,” or you might end up with some seriously terrible-sounding results.

Finally, hit record and start singing. It’s important to note that this is the LAST step. You can’t apply the auto-tune effect after the fact, so tweak all your settings, and then give it a shot. Make T-Pain proud!

When you have an older version of the mac like a power pc you tend to get left behind when it comes to new versions of software. The newest version of iTunes requires the latest version of safari that that requires you to update to a newer version of the Mac Operating system, So what do you do when you update itunes and find all this information out? Well downgrade.

What you need to do first is Uninstall iTunes by Opening your Applications folder, and drag iTunes to the trash.
Restart your Mac and empty the trash to ensure that iTunesHelper is not running and not installed.

Go to your Music directory and open up the iTunes folder.
Move iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml to your desktop
Note: iTunes Library.itl may not be named .itl if it isnt copy the file named iTunes Library

Install the version of iTunes want to install.
If you dont know where to download a old version of itunes a like will be in the show notes
Download Old Versions Here

Open up iTunes and check the version to insure it is the version you intended to install,
While iTunes is open and go to File > Library > Import
Choose the iTunes Music Library.xml you moved to your desktop
This should rebuild your library/playlists

You can now delete those library files on the desktop
And you should be good to go

If your desktop is anything like mine, your background wallpaper is barely visible from a wall of icons have that been floating around since the last time you reinstalled the mac os or just cleaned then up. I guess if they weren’t piling up on the desktop it would be somewhere else, but at least then we probably wouldn’t have to look at them every day.

Luckily, we can stuff that clutter in a closet by hiding the icons on the desktop. Here’s how.

1. Open the Terminal located in /Applications/Utilities (or alternatively by searching for it in Spotlight).
2. Enter the following command at the prompt and press Enter. You can also goto mactippodcast.com and look in the show notes where you can copy/paste the command.
   defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool false
3. Restart the Finder by entering the following command in the Terminal and pressing Enter.
   killall Finder

   The Terminal is case sensitive so be sure to respect uppercase and lowercase characters.

4. Exit the terminal by entering the following command and press Enter.
   exit
5. Quit the Terminal application.

Your desktop will now be clean leaving you free to admire your backgound. You may still save files to the desktop and access them using the Finder window.

Getting your desktop to show icons again is easily as simple.

1. follow the same proses as described before but this time you want to input this command
   defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool true
2. Kill the finder as before
   killall Finder
3. Exit the terminal
   exit
4. and Quit the Terminal application.

Now your done you have all your Icons back

YAY!!

Changing an icon in Snow Leopard is simple. You don’t need fancy software like CandyBar. Although it makes changing system icons a lot simpler than by hand, you can customize file, folder and app icons right in Finder.
First Find an icon

There are a number of different places where you can find icons and system replacements sets for your Mac. Here are just a few great resources:
InterfaceLIFT: Probably the largest Mac icon collections on the Web
We Love Icons: Icons of the finest quality
Apple Downloads: Icons and Screensavers category

Wherever you look for icons, make sure they are Mac compatible. This is usually illustrated by the  symbol.
Once you’ve downloaded the icon or set, unzip it and take a look inside. Most sets come in a variety of formats. These may include PNG, ICO, ICNS and Macintosh formats but the naming may be different depending on the author.
Here we see the contents of a typical icon set. Look for ‘Icons’ or ‘Macintosh Icons’.
Once you’ve found the icon you like, right-click it and chose Get info. Do the same for the icon you wish to change.
Open the Info window
In the info window, click on the new icon. You know it is selected when you see a glow around it. Hit ⌘+c to copy it to the clipboard. With the Info window of the target opened, click on the old icon and hit ⌘+v to paste it. If all went well, your file should now show the new icon.

A lot of times people forget passwords, like myself, I have a ton of accounts with all different types of passwords. with any security minded person (which you should be) remembering those passwords can be a big pain. And sometimes you forget those passwords( I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten my checking account password), you may have friends that play practical jokers, or little kids that like to play around, or maybe you like to reset your password every 30 days and forget what it is. So I’m going to tell you how to reset your password for your Mac. First insert your Mac install disc Now restart your mac. Usually, you can start from the disc by putting it in your computer, restarting, and holding the C key. Or, put it in the computer and click the Install or Restore icon you see in the disc’s main window (after which the computer will start from the disc without you needing to hold C). Or, you can use Startup Manager or the Startup Disk preference pane to select the Install disc.

Choose a language, Noting that the default keyboard layout is U.S. English while starting from the installation disc. If you use a keyboard layout other than U.S English, use the Input menu (the flag icon on the right side of the menu bar) and select the desired layout before typing a new password. Click the arrow button to continue,
then choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu (or from the Installer menu, if using Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier).
If you don’t see this menu or menu choice, you probably have not started from the CD yet.
Select your Mac OS X hard disk volume.
and Select the user name you want to change
Do not select “System Administrator (root)”. This is actually the root user. You should not confuse it with a normal account.
Enter a new password.
Click Save.

You might also run into to another problem if you change your account’s password using your Mac OS X Install disc, your default keychain password (which uses the same initial password as your user account) does not change. Because of this, you will be prompted to enter a keychain password each time an application requires authentication that your keychain would normally provide.
Well how do we fix this?
Boot in to Mac OS X
Open Keychain Access (you can get to it by choosing the Utilities folder from the Go menu in the Finder).
In Keychain Access, choose Keychain List from the Edit menu, select the “login” keychain and Click Delete (-) in the window.

I am an avid lover of printing and saving documents to PDF. A nice feature built right into the Macintosh operating system is the ability to save to PDF thanks to a open source project called CUPS(Common UNIX Printing System), something Windows really needs to work on.
When printing or saving documents from a website I dont like all the needless junk on the page, for example ads, sidebars or the LONG comments. one of my favorite websites PrintWhatYouLike.com allows you to take all the needless junk within a website completely out of the page

Once you’re there you will see an address bar that you can paste the URL into, once pasted click start and you will be redirected to a page where you can edit everything within the page.
Go ahead click on anything, if you do the selection will highlight in yellow, this website has a ton of features and you can click anything, and delete it, remove the background image, remove all images, you can even select a certain text or image and expand just that selected part of the website you want to print. PrintWhatYouLike.com also allows you to save as a PDF or HTML file although the HTML file to include the images if you have any on the website which are trying to save. one really sweet feature on PrintWhatYouLike.com is it allows you to add other pages! for example if you have a website that you want to print or save to a PDF but you don’t want to go through all the hassle of printing each individual page PrintWhatYouLike.com allows you to add Extra pages, go ahead and click the add page in the upper left-hand corner of the page and paste the URL of the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth page and click add.
What’s also neat about this feature is if you edited the first page and then add an additional page it formats the page for you, no more editing all the other pages

The other day I reserved an email form listener David Muller he asks;
On a PC’s keyboard there are Home and End keys. What is the Mac equivalent?

Well as you know Windows keyboards have End and Home key and Mac keyboards dont, You probably are looking for HOME & END keys or have a windows keyboard hooked up to your mac and the keys dont work. Well there is a news for you guys, So But don’t panic, Apple has their own weird way of doing things. Lets see how a few of the keys which we were using on a PC work in Mac.

The Home key has now been remapped to – Command + Left Arrow
and the End key is now – ⌘/Command + Right Arrow

The Page Up and Down keys had also changed.
They are now remapped to – ⌘/Command + UP Arrow and Command + Down Arrow

You also may have noticed that the delete button on a mac keyboard works like Backspace in a PC. So where the hell is delete button?
Press Fn + Delete. This gives you the functionality of a delete key in a PC.
Deleting a file? – Press ⌘/Command + Delete

One neat thing that might just work on your mac is these commands
⌃/Control + A this moves the cursor to beginning of paragraph, ⌃/Control + E moves to end of paragraph, and Option/Alt + left or right arrow, this moves the cursor between words.

Back in the old windows days I remember downloading a bunch of screensavers a weekly basis but now I’m older I don’t really download that many screen savers and haven’t had to download any screensavers since and move to the Mac, but was fiddling I wanted to actually wanted to download some screensavers.

Apple provides a number of screen savers with the Mac OS, but you can never have too many As the same with Windows PCs. There are screen savers available  for almost everybody’s tastes

Adding a third-party screen saver to your Mac is a simple process. You can add it manually, or if the screen saver has a built-in installer, as many do, you can let it perform the installation for you.

Screen savers are stored in one of two locations on your Mac.

/Library/Screen Savers/. Screen savers stored here can be used by any user account on your Mac.
~/Library/Screen Savers/. Screen savers stored here can only be used by that user account. The tilde (~) character at the front of the path name represents your personal home directory. For example, if your home directory is named ‘Ben,’ the pathname would be /Users/Ben/Library/Screen Savers/.
Most Mac screen savers are smart little buggers; they know how to install themselves.

1. Close System Preferences, if you already have it open.
2. Double-click the screen saver you wish to install.
3. The Installer will start.
4. Most installers will ask if you wish to install the screen saver for all users or just yourself. Make your selection to complete the installation.
5. You can copy screen savers you download from the Internet to one of the above two locations. Note: Never move a folder or file that doesn’t end with .saver to a Screen Savers folder.

and that should do it The installation is complete, no matter which way you chose to perform the installation. You can now select and configure the options your new screen saver offers, if any,  by going to the System Preference Pane — Desktop and Screensavers

I love Path Finder and, but like many other Path Finder users, quickly grew annoyed by the useless Finder and Trash icons in the Dock. So, through some digging, I found out how to kill them once and for all.

Navigate to /System » Library » CoreServices, Control-click or right click on Dock.app then select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. In the new window that opens, navigate into Resources and open DockMenus.plist in your editor.

Find the entries for finder-quit and trash. In each, change one of the commands so that the command entry is 1004 and the name entry is REMOVE_FROM_DOCK. Save your changes and restart the Dock from the Terminal “killall Dock”, and you can then choose Remove From Dock for those two items.

Leopard is smart bugger as we all know, its even smart enough to recognize dates in the body of an email within Apple Mail.
If the email contains a date, hover over it with the mouse. Once you do, the date will get a dashed line around it, and a pull-down arrow will appear to the right of the date. Click on the arrow and you’ll get a pull-down menu with two iCal options: “Create New iCal Event” and “Show This Date in iCal.”
Choosing “Create New iCal Event” generates a dialog box. Its default name is the subject line of the original email, though you can change it here. You can also supply the location and duration of the event and add additional notes. When you’re finished, choose “Add to iCal.” and Leopard adds the date to your calendar — without even opening iCal.
Not sure if you’re available for that date? Choose “Show This Date in iCal.” This opens iCal at the date in question, but doesn’t add the event to your schedule.

Continuing on from the last episode about Application Switching is expose options and your mouse, Expose is one great tool but there is one thing missing I HATE about it using the keyboard to to in able the great features that expose has to offers.
I own a Logitech lx6 Cordless Optical Mouse that has the traditional mouse buttons But also has the left and right scroll buttons.
Expose has a great feature that allows you to program mouse buttons to enable the expose features.
I use the and left scroll to enable expose for all windows and the right side scroll to hide windows I choose not to enable in single application because i don’t use that feature at all
here is how you enable this feature on your mouse
Go ahead and Open your System Preferences and double click on “expose and spaces”
Now Click on the expose tab
in the expose section you will be able to assign the mouse keys you need for enabling the features
I used button 7 (left) and 8 (right)
For a bonus tip you can also enable a mouse button for dashboard
Now I’m even more productive with out leaving my mouse Neat huh?

Your Mac provides you with a number of ways of switching between applications (programs), in this episode I will teach you how to use the multiple ways to switch between applications

To try this out, open a number of applications at the same time — for instance Safari, Mail, Address Book, Text Edit, and iCal.

Having done so, you should have a pile of windows one on top of the other. So, what’s a good way of switching from one to another?

Hold down the Command (~) key with your left thumb and with your left index finger tap the Tab key. Across the middle of your screen appears a row of large icons-those of the applications you opened. The icon of the application you were working in is at the left hand end of the row and the next to the right is highlighted.

Continue to hold down the Command key and tap the Tab key repeatedly. Each of the icons will be highlighted in turn, moving from left to right. Keep holding down the Command key and this time tap the tilde (~) key — the one above the Tab key — repeatedly. Now the highlight moves from right to left.

When the application you wish to switch to is highlighted, simply release the ~ key, and that application’s window will move to the front.

Now try this. Note which application you are working in, and then press Command/Tab just once and release the Command key. you can also press Command and tab but hold down the command key and use the mouse pointer to select the application you want. Note which application is now at the front. Repeat the simple Command/Tab keypress and you’ll notice that you’re back in the application in which you started. See how easy it is to switch back and forth between two applications?

If you are Command/tabbing your way across the row of program icons and see one that you’d prefer to quit right away, just highlight that icon and while continuing to hold down the Command key, press the Q key. If you see one you’d just like to hide, press the H key instead of Q.

It may be useful to know that after the first Command/Tab, you can directly click the icon you want, using the mouse.
Finally, you can also drag a document onto the application icon of your choice to open it. How? In the Finder, click the icon of a document and begin to drag it. Without releasing the mouse button, pause and press Command/Tab, then continue to drag the document onto the appropriate application icon. Maybe not something you’ll want to do often, but you never know

and then you have exposé, Exposé is a built-in feature that can give you fast access to any open window with a few keystrokes, temporarily hide all open windows, or scale all windows down so you can get an overview of all of them

If you currently don’t have any windows open, other than your web browser window, open a few so you can see Exposé in action.
To show windows by application, press F10; Exposé highlights one application’s open window(s) while dimming everything behind it. To toggle through other application windows, press the Tab key. Click a window to select it, or press F10 to return everything back as it was.
To view all your open windows, press F9. To select a window, click it. To return your view back to normal, press F9 again.
To hide all windows so you can see your Desktop, press F11. Press the key again to display the clutter.
