UFC 97 features the man many believe to be best fighter in the world, Anderson "The Spider" Silva against up and comer Thales Leites. Unfortunately many don't understand why the UFC is tapping Leites for a title shot right now. Many people also believe Silva needs to be challenged more. In Silva's last fight he danced around and didn't need to show his world class skills to get a win.

Chuck Liddell certainly is a fan favorite, including this writer. However since losing to Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Liddell has been on a career slide losing a handful of fights and injuries. Liddell hopefully will show he has plenty of fight left, and maybe some new moves against Rua. Rua is a big name, but needs to show he is still relevant and can at least put on a good fight. His performance against an old-looking Mark Coleman was just plain ugly to watch. And he also got his butt handed to him by Forrest Griffin a couple years ago before an injury. Rua needs to show he even belongs in the UFC. Liddell vs. Rua is a good matchup for both of them.

Definitely looking forward to seeing Cheick Kongo and Luiz Arthur Cane in action again. Kongo is a monster and is not far from getting a title shot if he keeps winning. Cane is also a strong contender as well with awesome striking power.

Jackson vs Jardine UFC 96 Fights

UFC 96 boasted some terrific fights, some shocking results, and some terrible refereeing. Jackson's win over Jardine in the main event earned Jackson a title shot, but due to an injury, Jackson will need surgery and time to heal. Therefore, Rashad Evans (13-0-1) will face Lyoto Machida (14-0) at UFC 98 on May 23 in his first title defense.

As noted in the previous post, Shane Carwin upset Gabriel Gonzaga to become a serious contender in the heavyweight division.

Shane Carwin (11-0) proved he was a real threat in the heavyweight division by knocking out an elite striker and jiujitsu specialist, Gabriel Gonzaga (10-4) from Brazil. Carwin has been moving up the ranks of the heavyweight division showing incredible striking power and wrestling skills. Carwin had said this fight will show the world who Shane Carwin is, and he delivered on that statement showing grit and determination exchanging blows with an experienced and tested Gonzaga. In the end, Carwin's amazing power was too much for Gonzaga. Gonzaga collapsed in a heap after receiving a crushing straight right to his chin in the first round.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Shane Carwin might be the only athlete these days who can say he tested positive and it is a good thing.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s powerful heavyweight contender, who vaulted himself among the elite of the sport with a dramatic first-round knockout of Gabriel Gonzaga on Saturday at UFC 96 at Nationwide Arena, had his DNA tested recently to compile an athletic profile.

Of nearly 500 athletes, including 50 Olympians, tested by Canadian company Warrior Roots, Carwin was one of the three highest-scoring for explosiveness.

That should not, of course, come as a surprise to anyone who has seen him fight even one of his 11 professional bouts. Saturday’s victory was his 11th knockout and took just 69 seconds. The longest anyone has ever lasted with him was 2:11.

He’d blown out Christian Wellisch and Neil Wain in his first two UFC fights, but he moved from taking on plow horses to fighting a thoroughbred when he accepted the bout against Gonzaga. One counter right hand later, he put himself near the top of the heap in the UFC’s suddenly impressive heavyweight division.

“After beating Gonzaga, there’s nobody he can’t fight in the UFC now,” UFC president Dana White said.

Carwin had his share of critics, who ripped him for what they said was a lack of quality opposition, a poor chin and a lack of conditioning.

Carwin, who was an NCAA Division II wrestling champion at Western States College and holds degrees in mechanical engineering and environmental technology, pretty much squashed the lack of opposition knock on Saturday.

And while anyone is vulnerable when hit on the chin by a world-class heavyweight, Carwin answered a lot of questions about his chin, too. Gonzaga cracked him early in their bout and sent him down, but Carwin was quickly up and fighting.

The conditioning rap was always ludicrous. He was a national-caliber wrestler and his trainers say his first round is almost always his worst. He gets better the longer the fights go, though his fights generally don’t last awfully long.

Carwin, 34, wearied at hearing the talk about his conditioning, but when you knock guys out as quickly as he does, the critics have to have something to pick at.

“All the time, I wonder what these people are thinking, but people just like to question things,” Carwin said. “I guess it’s the unknown. People didn’t know a lot about me and hadn’t seen me much. But I’m working with so many good trainers and so many good guys. My conditioning was the best-ever tonight. Each fight it gets better because we keep refining things and I get better at what I do.”

He’s going to get very familiar with a pair of other men who are a lot like him. A year ago, when the UFC’s heavyweight division was in disarray, White and matchmaker Joe Silva reloaded by adding three former collegiate wrestlers, each of whom was a gamble.

But a year later, Brock Lesnar is the UFC heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez is hailed as perhaps the UFC’s top prospect and Carwin has established himself as arguably the sport’s biggest puncher.

It’s going to be a treat for MMA fans over the next several years as the three of them undoubtedly will square off in a series of fights.

“It’s inevitable that we’re going to see a lot of each other, and it’s a great thing for that to happen,” Carwin said of Lesnar and Velasquez. “It’s great to have people talking about it and now I think we’re at that point.

“Velasquez is very talented and he’s going to do a lot of damage in the UFC. He’s right there at the top. He was an All-American wrestler who is great on his feet as well. He’s getting better all the time. All three of us are improving on the standup and the jiu-jitsu. I have a lot of respect for Cain. Brock is athletically gifted. What people don’t see are the athletic gifts of heavyweights, but Brock is gifted in that area as well.”

Carwin, who still works full-time as an engineer, is as soft-spoken and humble as he is powerful. But he knew he belonged in the UFC when he arrived last year, even if most of the UFC’s fans had no idea of his athletic pedigree.

This is a guy, though, who was such a good small-college football player that the Philadelphia Eagles invited him to training camp. He was more than holding his own with world-class guys in his fight training and that, more than any single victory, convinced him of his worthiness to fight in the UFC.

“I’ve always felt like I’ve been very athletic and I’m very competitive and I’m explosive,” Carwin said. “I love to train, too. Being in the training room alongside the number one guys in the world and top 10 guys left and right and you’re in there training with them, that’s a boost of confidence as well.”

He has to strike fear in anyone in the division, including the guys at the top. He’s cutting down to get to 259, yet is as quick and agile as a light heavyweight.

The guy is scary good, and he’s only going to get better.

“There were a lot of questions about Shane and I think he answered them tonight,” White said.

If not, Carwin is eager to get back in with the biggest names the UFC will feed him. He’s planning to give up his day job to concentrate full-time on fighting.

It’s hard to imagine how good he might be when he can train full-time. He’s already eager just to get back in there.

“Keep putting them in front of me,” he said. “This is what I love to do.”

And it’s what he does about as well as anyone these days.

UFC 96: Jackson's all set for Jardine

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson said he is prepared for everything Keith “The Dean of Mean” Jardine has to offer when they clash in the main feature of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 96 this coming Saturday.

“I trained for MMA (mixed martial arts) so wherever he tries to take it, I've got an answer,” said the former UFC light heavyweight champion in a UFC promotional video.

Jackson, who has an MMA career record of 29-7, said he is no stranger to ground fighting although he is better known for his stand up skills.

“I'm a wrestler, so I know how to defend, to take down,” he said. “I've been taking down people before in fights.”

MMA fans expect quite a difficult match for the 30-year-old Jackson as he will be facing a more rounded fighter in Jardine.

“I'm ready in all areas. I fought black belts, all good wrestlers, all good strikers, all good boxers, good kick boxers. I'm ready, homie,” Jackson said.

For his part, the 33-year-old Jardine said he is prepared to go toe-to-toe with the powerful Memphis native, whom he referred as among the legends of MMA.

“I wanna fight all the guys, the legends in the sports, that's what I've been doing. To me this is as big as a title fight,” said the six-foot-two fighter from Albuquerque.

However the Dean of Mean, who totes a 14-5-1 record, said he expects a different fight with Jackson.

“I'm one of the best, more complete MMA fighters out there. Definitely I'm trying to bring all the skills into all these fights. This fight’s a little different, though. I might be more like the Chuck [Liddel] fight, I might be more on a standing fight,” he said.

The Jackson vs. Jardine fight card, which also features Fil-Am Mark Muñoz against Matt Hamill, is slated to take place at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

Mike Brown successfully defended his featherweight title with a impressive showing over Leonard Garcia in Garcia's native Texas. Brown landed early with a powerful overhand right that put Garica on the canvas. Brown them mounted and pounded Garcia into a bloody pulp. Garcia was desperate to stay in the match in front of his home crowd, but Brown finally got his arms around Garcia's head and got Garcia to tapout with a tight submission.

Brown showed his power and wrestling skills in an impressive debut of his title defense. Former champion Urijah Faber was watching ringside and could be seen saying "Let's get it on" regarding a rematch with Brown.

UFC 96 has some exciting fights on the card. The main event Jackson vs. Jardine showcases two of the UFC's top lightweight fighters. Jackson lost the lightweight title to Forrest Griffen last year and a win in this match would give him a chance to get the title back. Dana White has already said if Jackson wins this fight he will get first crack at Rashad Evans, the current title holder. Jardine is looking to put together a string of wins and get a shot at the the title. He has had wins and losses against top fighters in the division. The UFC is looking to see if he can get some consistency against top fighters before giving him a crack at the top spot.

CORPUS CHRISTI - Mike brown isn't used to the term 'title defense', because he's only been a World MMA Champion for a little more than three months.

However, he's happy he has a title to fight for at all.

Brown will defend his WEC Featherweight Belt Sunday against Plainview native Leonard Garcia at the American Bank Center. The 33-year-old caught the started fighting in the mid-90s, but thought about giving it up as a career because there wasn't much opportunity or cash for 145 pounders. That is, until the WEC came along and made lighter classes a specialty.

"I had a lot of injuries. I had a lot of surgeries. After a couple of them, you're like, 'what am I doing this for?' I do it for the love, but I'm going to be 45-years-old, broke and crippled. I'm glad I stuck with it and it's all paid off. No matter what happens, it would be worth it," Brown said.

He carries an eight-match winning streak into his fight with Garcia, which will be on national television.

Damian Maia is fast becoming a top contender in the UFC's middleweight division after another thrilling takedown and submission in the first round over veteran Chael Sonnen. Maia is also reportedly training on his striking with the legendary Wanderlei Silva, however his most devastating weapon is his Brazilian Jujitsu. Maia is a two-time world BJJ Champion and his prowess was on display again in UFC 95 in another submission victory (Triangle Choke).

An excellent leg-sweep from Maia took down Sonnen before the Brazilian locked a textbook triangle and brought the tap from the American after two minutes, 37 seconds, improving the 31-year-old’s record to 10-0.

Other Notes: I predicted Joe Stevenson to win his fight against Diego Sanchez, but I was disappointed he never used his takedown and submission abilities and was predictable in standing up over the entire 3 round fight. I think Joe needs to reevaluate his game after bad consecutive losses.

Is Deigo Sanchez going to be too big and too strong for Joe "Daddy" Stevenson? This fight will be at 155 pounds, which will be tough for Sanchez to get down to. Stevenson's most recent loss was against BJ Penn. Watching the above video, I get the feeling Stevenson is more realistic about cutting weight and understands that he seriously needs a win.

Georges St Pierre (GSP) thoroughly beat BJ Penn over 4 rounds of action at UFC 94. GSP was able to take Penn down several times and used his wrestling skills to keep Penn down and control the fight constantly beating Penn's head with strikes.

The referee called a stop to the fight after the 4th round. BJ Penn looked like he had taken enough punishment and ref made the decision and Penn did not dispute it.

This fight was one of the most heavily promoted fights in MMA history. This was fight that BJ Penn wanted after losing to GSP via decision earlier in his career.

During the pre-fight hype including UFC Primetime, a televised series of episodes showing the training of the fighters, BJ Penn called GSP a quiter and told GSP trainer to go "F" himself.

I think GSP showed that his training and discipline was superior. GSP looked bigger and stronger and GSP was skilled enough to use that advantage and not make any mistakes.

Prediction: George St. Pierre via decision.

The undercard for this fight will be Lyoto Machida vs. Thiago Silva. This is a battle of 13 wins - 0 losses fighters. One of them will have to leave the ring a loser. I expect this fight to be a brilliant match. Silva is aggressive and a finisher and Machida is great at evading and counter-striking.

I have to say this win cements Fedor's place of all-time greats as well as keeps the Affliction promotion in business. I would next like to see Randy Couture fight Fedor, the window of opportunity is getting smaller for this fight to be meaningful. The UFC can still protect its image since Brock Lesner is the current champ and beat Randy.

Josh Barnett looked very tough in his fight with Yvel. I think if Fedor must fight another Affliction signed fighter, it would have to be Barnett. But I have heard Fedor say they are very good friends which makes me believe that fight might not happen.
