now open to all

Microsoft has opened up its So.clsocial networking service to the general public, which lets users share and comment on interesting search results and connect with "like-minded" people.

It is targeted at students and had earlier been restricted to invitees at universities and schools in the US.

The service integrates with Facebook and is being pitched as an "experiment" rather than a rival to other networks.

Microsoft revealed that the product was developed by its Fuse Labs unit as a "research project... focused on the future of social experiences and learning."

Members are invited to create "collages of content" using the firm's Bing search engine technology and external links, which they can, then share with others.

Users can then identify people who are interested in the same topics, monitor their associates' feeds and take part in "video parties" during which members watch online videos together, commenting on them via chat function.

Members can sign in using their Facebook login details, however, their So.cl activities do not show up on Facebook's pages unless the option is activated.

The move to open up the service to the general public was taken over the weekend with little fanfare, prompting some analysts to speculate that Microsoft only had limited ambitions for the project.

"The fact that So.cl is targeted at students echoes Facebook's beginnings and has made many assume it is a Facebook clone," the BBC quoted Eden Zoller, principal analyst at technology consultants Ovum, as saying.

"But So.cl is, as Microsoft stresses, an experiment designed to be a layer on existing social networks.

"Microsoft is being sensible in positioning So.cl in this way - the opposite approach of Google, which entered social networking all guns blazing with a full on service, and is having modest success," Zoller said.

Zoller added that the project could also help Microsoft further improve Bing's search capabilities.

A study by Comscore suggested that Microsoft had a 15.4 percent share of the US search market in April compared with Google's 66.5 percent lead.

Earlier surveys have suggested that the gap is even wider in the UK and parts of Europe.

May 26 is the official release date for the phone across the country.

The Android smartphone provides an excellent music experience with features such as xLoud, Clear Bass and 3D surround. The phone comes with 2.3 Gingerbread OS but users have the option to upgrade it to Android 4.3, ( Ice-cream Sandwich) in the future.

Unlike the Xperia S, which is expensive, this phone has the features like an aluminium unibody build which make it a lot sturdier.

Other features include, 1Ghz dual-core processor, with 1GB RAM and an internal storage of 16GB. However, the phone does not have the option of expandable memory for those who hope the spruce up the phone later. It come with an 8MP shooter, instead of a 12MP like the Xperia S.

The smartphone doesn’t seem to have too many competitors in the Indian market for now.

The one big competitor for the phone could be the HTC Sensation, which is available for Rs 24,000.

HTC Sensation does have a dual-core processor but it also comes with an expandable memory of upto 32Gb, so users who want higher memory might not find the Xperia P so exciting.

Here are six tips to help you communicate without risking your privacy.

By now we all know not to post sensitive information on social networking sites. Even with privacy settings enabled, that angry political rant or embarrassing beach photo can easily become the next viral Internet sensation. By comparison, email seems like a much safer communications medium, but you can still get into trouble if you lose control of your account. In addition, email messages bounce unprotected from server to server, so private information might be compromised. Here are six tips to protect your email account and your private messages.

Use a Strong Password. You give out your email address all the time; it's not really private information. That being the case, the only thing protecting your account from misuse is the password. A malefactor who guesses your too-weak password gains full control of your email account. Protect your account with a strong password, especially if you use a Web-based email provider like Gmail or Yahoo mail.

Beware Public PCs. If you check your email on a public computer in a library or Internet café, be absolutely sure you've logged out before leaving. Even then, you might be leaving behind traces that could give the next user too much information about you. Follow PCMag's advice toUse Public Computers Safely.

Protect Your Address. It's true that you give out your email address every time you send a message, but there's no need to give it to the whole world. Don't include your email address in comments on blog posts, or in social media posts. Spammers and scammers scrape pages all the time looking for new victims.

Lock It Up. If you step away from your desk, lock the Windows desktop or close your email client. Otherwise a sneaky co-worker could read your mail or even reset your login password. Hold the Windows key and press L to lock the desktop instantly.

Don't Be Fooled. Oh, dear. Your email provider has sent you notification of a security breach, with a link to reset your password. Don't click that link! It's almost certainly a fraud, designed to steal your email account password. If you have any doubts, navigate to the email provider's site directly and double-check.

Use Encryption. Sometimes you just have to send sensitive information by email. To keep your data safe, save it as a document and use your word processing application's built-in encryption, or store the document in an encrypted ZIP file. Then share the password with the recipient separately. If you need encryption frequently, try a free email encryption product likePrivateSky or Enlocked.

Does implementing these tips seem like too much trouble? That's nothing compared to the trouble you'll face when you log on one morning and find that your email account just sent a million advertisements for "gentleman's enhancement" products. A little effort now can head off big problems later.

Google, however, is yet to officially comment on the report.

Currently, Android 4.0 is the latest version of the world largest mobile operating system. However, the Android 4.0 ICS is yet to be rolled out for many devices. Infact, only a handful smartphones have Android ICS operating system.

Integrated Google Chrome
No doubt, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich came out with great new features, which included the tabbed browsing feature and super-fast browsing speed were taken from the Android 3.0 Honeycomb and Android Gingerbread. The Android team had exceptionally wok hard on making the user’s browsing experience a better one.

Despite all these features, Google Chrome has still not arrived on Android devices, and Android fans and users are expecting that in the next release of the Android version, that is the Android 5.0 Jelly Bean, Google will include an integrated Google Chrome browser, giving users the same experience as the desktop version of Google Chrome gives.

Currently, Google offers users to download Chrome for Android, which is currently in beta and undergoing major changes. We expect that the same version with new and advanced features will be integrated into the next release of Android 5.0 Jelly Bean.

Android 5.0 Jelly Bean – File Manager App
Android users have always craved for a built-in file manager app. There have been speculations around the Web that Android 5.0 Jelly Bean is expected to have an in-built File Manager, enabling users to easily organize their files and access them accordingly. Android mobile manufactures like Samsung and many others are already including a file manager as a part of their standard apps. Also, there have been a good number of downloads of file manager apps from the Android Marketplace.

Although Google will continue to support third-party file manager apps, but it is likely that they will introduce one in the OS release. With the expected release of Android 5.0 Jelly Bean, we expect that the Google Android Team will integrate a built-in file manager app within the OS, so that it makes easier for users to browser their files.

Android 5.0 Jelly Bean – Timely Upgrades
It’s obviously annoying to wait for a long time until your mobile gets an update to a new version, and Android updates are usually known for such long updates with long waiting period. It takes over 3 to 6 months for OEM’s to release updates for their Android phones, but this is expected to change with the release of Jelly Bean.

It is said that Google would de-couple UI customizations from the Core OS so as to enable manufacturers to apply customizations to Stock AOSP Android in the minimum time with which there will be faster release of updates and upgrades to all users.

Benson Lin, Asus Corporate Vice President, said that – “Asus is very close to Google, so once they have Android 5.0 I think there will be a high possibility that we will be the first wave to offer the Jelly Bean update.”

Android 5.0 Jelly Bean – Keyboards
The Android 4.0 keyboard does not include long pressing to switch to alternate characters and numbers, which is certainly time consuming and simple enough to use. However, apps like Swype and Swiftkey have played a great role in Android keyboard experience by offering features like long-press and many others.

However, users are expecting that Google would update their standard keyboard with new features and design. The new high quality keyboard should make typing easier than ever with voice to text that is unmatched by any operating system.

Currently, the Android ICS has the built-in input technology, auto-corrects misspelled words, and underlines potentially wrong spellings, which is quite impressive for heavy messaging and e-mail users. We expect that Google will include more such features in the release of the Android 5.0 Jelly Bean.

Android 5.0 Jelly Bean Lite
Android OS works amazingly awesome on any dual-core phones and higher configuration smartphones. However, when it comes to lower end phones, the performance is very poor. Users around the Web have urged Google to release a lighter version of Android OS for midrange and lower end smartphones, as the performance of OS will significantly drop when used on lower end phones.

In order to overcome this problem, we hope that Google will release a lighter version of the OS – Android 5.0 Jell Bean Lite – for smartphones with limited CPU and storage capacity.

Android 5.0 Jelly Bean – Better Battery, Power Management, and Faster OS
Many users face issues with battery drain and complain a lot about it. Android 4.0 ICS has already come with great battery efficiency and better power management by improving the Hardware acceleration and Dalvik VM optimizations. We expect that the next version – Android 5.0 Jelly Bean would go a step further to improve the efficiency of the phone’s battery and power management by allowing users to take more control over how services behave.

Google also has to do a lot of improvising in order to prevent third-party apps from misbehaving and draining out the phone’s entire battery in no time. A stock OS without any third-party apps gives impressive battery life. Google needs to tackle misbehaving third-part party apps and come up with a feasible solution.

Also, it would be great if Google considers tweaking Android 5.0 Jelly Bean in such a way to make it perform faster and more efficiently. Compared to Windows phone 7 and iOS, Android is a bit sluggish and slower.

Availability of Android 5.0 Jelly Bean
The next version of the Google Android 5.0 Jelly Bean is expected to arrive in the second quarter of this year, however, we do not know the exact dates of the release. We will make sure to update this post whenever the information is available. So, what do you think of the new Android 5.0 Jelly Bean? What other features are you expecting from it?

From the moment you wake up to the minute you go to sleep, your smartphone is your one stop shop for all your needs like email, news, navigation and of course, making the occasional call and sending a text message.

Social networking, reading news, uploading pictures or just managing your routine affairs, you smartphone is not only consuming your time and battery, but your money as well.

So here are 5 apps that will help you save money while taking care of routine work on your smartphone.

Skype: Making calls costs money, making video calls, even more. If you are someone who needs to talk over the phone a lot, then Skype on your smartphone is one of the best options to reduce call cost. The app works over Wi-Fi as well as 3G networks. So what’s unique? Well, users can make free Skype-to-Skype video calls, and call phones at Skype rates on the move. Users can also make free voice and video calls to anyone else on Skype, whether they’re on an Android, iPhone, Mac or PC, as well as IMs to your friends and family.

WhatsApp Messenger: If you are an SMS junkie, then there is no reason for you not to look at this app. WhatsApp Messenger is a smartphone messenger available for all operating systems including Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, Windows Phone and Nokia phones. WhatsApp uses 3G connectivity or WiFi (when available) to message friends and family. The app lets you send and receive messages, pictures, audio notes, and video messages. The app is free for the first year that you download it but after that you need to pay $0.99 (Rs. 53) per annum. The app however is not free for iOS users.

3G Data Monitoring: If you are someone who needs to be connected to the Internet all the time on the go, then you need an app that will monitor you 3G data consumption. We have seen instances where people have gotten hefty bills for their data usage. Not a pretty site! Hence, we present to you data monitoring apps. These apps monitor your data consumptions and warn you when you are about reach or cross your limit. You can also restrict the use of data on your device with these apps. There are many apps in this field but we are going to recommend one app per platform for you to check out!

Tax Calculator: There are two things certain in life – death and taxes, the former may be unavoidable but we can certainly monitor the amount of tax we pay and do our best to reduce the amount of money that flows from our hands to the government. One disadvantage is that a lot of people are unclear about the taxable amount and the calculation methods. Luckily, there is an app for that. The taxation apps help users determine their tax liability and well, once you know how much tax you are going to pay, you may as well find a nice CA to save you!
AVOID these 4 MISTAKES

1. Emotion trumps rational judgment: People hate to lose more than they like to win. This fear of regret causes investors to hold on to losers too long and sell winners too early. Investors tend to hold on to losing investments hoping that they will come back. The contrary is true with winning stocks. Fearing a downturn and wanting to lock in profits, investors will sell stocks or funds too early and miss out on future gains.

2. Investors tend to get overconfident: The majority of people think they are better than average at a variety of tasks, such as driving and investing. But by definition, a majority of people can't be above average. This unrealistic assessment of one's own investing prowess causes investors to overtrade and pay the resulting higher fees and taxes.

3. Myopia causes misallocation: Investors tend to view each investment in isolation rather than in aggregate. Trying to make every investment a winner can throw off the asset allocation. It can also lead an investor to chase hot stocks, trade excessively, and sell at the wrong time. If all of an investor's individual investments are up at the same time, they should be alarmed rather than proud. It's a sign that they may be under-diversified and taking on too much risk.

4. Aversion to saving: A few years back, in the United States, Professors Richard Thaler of the University of Chicago and Shlomo Benartzi of UCLA developed a behavioural finance programme called Save More Tomorrow, or SMarT. Under the SMarT program, workers allowed automatic deferral increases to their retirement plans each year at raise time. In a test run at one company, 78 per cent of those who were offered the plan joined, and 80 per cent of those stayed in the programme. Even more striking, the average savings rates for people in the SMarT program climbed from 3.5 per cent to 13.6 per cent in fewer than four years. So when workers didn't see the decrease in their paychecks, they didn't miss the money.

Using the information
Simply recognising bad behaviour can lead to success. Use online tools such as portfolio managers that can help identify unintended areas of concentration in your portfolio and avoid overlap amongst your fund and stock holdings.

Develop a trading strategy and stick with it to take emotion out of the equation. Or, better yet, take a long-term approach to your investments and don't look at them more than once or twice a year.

Remember that most people have average investing skills, so buy and hold a diversified portfolio of investments and control what you can. You can't control the returns from your investments, but you can affect the amount you pay in fees and taxes.

Don't look at your investments individually, but rather take your portfolio as a whole. Portfolio manager tools can help you organise and categorise your investments. Or consult a financial planner.

And finally, consistently put money away for retirement. The best thing you can do for your portfolio is give it time to grow.

The data rate is 20 times higher than the best commonly used wi-fi standard.

As consumers become ever more hungry for high data rates, standard lower-frequency bands have become crowded.

The research, published in Electronics Letters, adds to the idea that this "T-ray" band could offer huge swathes of bandwidth for data transmission.

The band lies between the microwave and far-infrared regions of the spectrum, and is currently completely unregulated by telecommunications agencies.

Despite the name, the band informally makes use of frequencies from about 300 gigahertz (300GHz or about 60 times higher than the current highest wi-fi standard) to about 3THz, 10 times higher again.

It is used principally for imaging in research contexts, as terahertz waves penetrate many materials as effectively as X-rays but deposit far less energy and therefore cause less damage.

Until recently, the technology required both to generate and detect these "T-rays" has been too bulky, costly or power-hungry to offer a plausible alternative to existing devices tucked within smartphones or wi-fi routers.

That looks set to change; in November electronic component firm ROHM demonstrated a 1.5Gb/s (1.5 billion bits per second) transfer rate at a frequency of 300GHz.

Terahertz wi-fi would probably only work over ranges of about 10m, but could in theory support data rates up to 100Gb/s - close to 15 times higher than the next-generation 802.11ac wi-fi standard that is under development.

The new work, by researchers from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, demonstrated 3Gb/s transmission at 542GHz.

At the heart of the team's 1mm-square device is what is known as a resonant tunnelling diode, or RTD.

Tunnelling diodes have the unusual characteristic that the voltage they produce can sometimes go down as current is increased.

RTDs are designed such that this process makes the diode "resonate", which in the current work's design means it sprays out waves in the terahertz band.

The team is now working to improve their proof-of-principle device and extend its range deeper into the terahertz regime, as well as increasing its power output.

Doing away with the decades-old practice of issuing tickets manually, APSRTC plans to introduce the Smart cards facility in city buses.

Authorities claim the move will be convenient to both the passengers and conductors as well.

Like prepaid mobile recharge cards, Smart cards will be issued in different denominations.

When a passenger swipes or taps these cards at the special sensors fixed at the doors in buses and enters the stage number on a particular route, the fare for that distance gets deducted automatically from the card.

This system is already in practice abroad and plans are being made to introduce a similar facility here.

As a pilot project it would be tried in a few buses and based on passengers' feedback, it will extended to other buses. This apart, authorities are also considering using TIMs in city buses.

Nokia has announced it will begin rolling out the Nokia 808 PureView cameraphone in select markets in May. The Finnish mobile giant also announced that India, and Russia, will be the first two markets to get the PureView on retail shelves.

The Symbian Belle-based Nokia 808 PureView, or PureView 808 as it was first known, stole the show when it was unveiled at MWC 2012, receiving the Best Mobile Device award at the prestigious event.

Even in our own ThinkDigit Weekly Poll, which asked readers “Which top-end smartphone unveiled at MWC do you most fancy?” the Nokia 808 PureView won out, displacing the quad-core processor powered flagships – the LG Optimus 4X HD, HTC One X (read our review), and Huawei Ascend D Quad – at least in terms of reader interest.

In the meanwhile, the Nokia 808 PureView has also won the award for Best Imaging Innovation for 2012 from the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA). Jo Harlow, Head of Smart Devices at Nokia, spoke about the importance of the device in the entire smartphone industry, saying:

“PureView has completely raised the bar on imaging performance for the whole smartphone industry - and Nokia is not stopping here. We’re going to carry on developing PureView for our future smartphones in ways that will again revolutionize the imaging experience.”

The Nokia 808 PureView features an extra-large 41MP sensor, along with high-performance Carl Zeiss optics and new pixel oversampling technology. Offering a maximum image resolution of 38MP, the Nokia 808 PureView’s camera sensor condenses 7 adjacent pixels into one, downsizing it to an extra-sharp and light-sensitive 5MP or 8MP image. Max image quality at 4:3 aspect is 38 MP, while at 16:9 aspect is 34 MP.

The Nokia 808 PureView also features a built-in Xenon flash, alongside a LED light for video. It can handle 1080p HD video recording at 30 fps, with stereo sound, and 4x zoom. Nokia has also included the Nokia Rich Recording feature, which enables audio recording at CD-like levels of quality, previously only possible with external microphones. It also comes with Dolby Headphone technology, transforming stereo content into a personal surround sound experience over any headphones and Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 channel surround sound playback.

While all this probably makes the Nokia 808 PureView the greatest cameraphone to date, Nokia has decided not to put too much juice into the rest of the phone’s specifications – it features a relatively low-resolution 640x360 pixel Gorilla Glass AMOLED display, albeit with a 16:9 display.

Other specifications include a single-core 1.3GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 16GB built-in storage, USB-on-the-Go, Bluetooth 3.0, HSDPA 14.4Mbps, HSUPA 5.76Mbps, Wi-Fi N with DLNA, GPS and A-GPS, stereo FM radio, and even NFC connectivity.
This brings up a question: How does wireless charging work? Among the engineers and scientists, wireless charging is known as 'inductive charging'. It utilizes two smart coils - one in the charger and another in the device that is getting charged. The primary coil creates a very small electromagnetic field around the charger through which electricity can be transferred. The secondary coil, which is in the phone, receives the power from electromagnetic field and converts in back into electric current to feed it into the battery.

The technology is still in the early stages and it works best when the distance between the two coils is few millimeters. That's the reason why users have to place the device on the charger.

The main benefit of wireless charging is that it removes one more wire. This not only makes it easier to charge the phone but also has aesthetic appeal. At the same time, wireless charging has poor efficiency. This means it takes longer to charge the battery through wireless charger.

Galaxy S3 is not the first phone to use wireless charging. Three years ago Palm commercialized the technology and sold a charger called Touchstone that allowed phones like Pre and Pixi to be charged wirelessly. Powermat is another company that sells special chargers, which can be used with iPhone and other devices for wireless charging.

After introducing the technology in 2009, Palm supported it in almost all of its devices. Even Touchpad, which was introduced in the market last year after Palm had been acquired by HP, had this feature. Of course, Palm is dead now.

Amidst controveries, tech company Datawind launched Ubislate tablets in India priced at Rs 2,999 and Rs 3,999, respectively for resistive and capacitive screen versions.

Government's Aakash II tablets, expected to be launched this year will carry the same configuration as Ubislate tablets, i.e, a 800 MHz Cortex A8 processors on Android 2.3 platform.

"We have tied up with distributors across India. The tablets will be available by May-end only after we have fulfilled the existing orders," said Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO of Datawind.

For internet access, Datawind has tied up with Aircel, which will offer an unlimited internet plan at Rs 98 per month on 2G/GPRS for the Ubislate tablets.

The Ubislate7c (capacitive touch) tablets priced at Rs 4000 will carry an internal flash memory of 4GB. The resistive versions will carry internal memory of 2GB and will be priced at Rs 2,999.

The tablets will carry one standard USB port. "Our customers who made pre-payments for earlier version of the tablet will get the upgraded version," Tuli added. He said that a break up with Quad has jeopardised the delivery schedule for the tablets, and he is looking for more suppliers.

For manufacturing the tablets in India, Datawind has tied up with Hyderbad-based VMC Systems after a break-up with Quad.

"Core Java Career Essentials" are something you must know, and know it
well to succeed as a Java professional. Even 40% to 60% of the so called
experienced professionals fail to make an impression due to their lack
of understanding in one or more of the areas covered in this book. Lack
of good understanding in the core essentials can be a speed breaker to
your career advancement.

If you have a java interview coming up in a few days or you want to
impress your peers and superiors with your technical strengths during
code review sessions, team meetings, and stand-ups, and concerned about
how to make a good impression? You don't need to worry if you are
familiar with the fundamentals. This is a Questions & Answers book
with 250+ questions and answers relating to core Java with lots of code
snippets (100+), examples, and diagrams. Most Java interviews and
technical challenges you face at work are structured around the
fundamentals and how well you communicate those fundamentals. So
regularly brushing up on these fundamentals really pays off.
Samsung Electronics has introduced the 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad processor, which will power the next Galaxy smartphone, the company said on Thursday.

It is scheduled to launch its next flagship smartphone, which is expected to be called Galaxy S III, on May 3 in London.

Samsung still hasn't confirmed the name of the phone. But said that the ARM Cortex A9-based Exynos 4 Quad is already in production and is scheduled to be designed first into Samsung's next Galaxy smartphone that will officially be announced in May.

The processor is particularly well-suited for heavy-load applications such as 3D games, video editing, and calculation-intensive simulation, according to Samsung. In addition, it has a video hardware codec engine for 1080p video recording and play-back, it said.

But Samsung also had battery consumption in mind when designing the processor. Due to its low-power process and power-saving design, the Exynos 4 Quad "has two times the processing capability" of its dual-core predecessor "while consuming 20% less power," according to the company.

For example, the processor can switch off cores to lower power consumption when all the power isn't needed, Samsung said.

A quad-core processor was one of the expected improvements to be included in the Galaxy S III, compared to the dual-core processor in the Galaxy S II.

The phone is also expected to have a 4.6-inch display with a 1280-by-720 pixel resolution, as well as an 8-megapixel camera and LTE connectivity for some parts of the world.

Exynos 4 Quad is sampling to other major handset makers, which means they can get their hands on smaller volumes of the processor.

The new Curve 9220 is priced in India at 10,990 rupees, higher than the price of Curve 8520, which is RIM's best-selling phone in India, and comes with an introductory offer to download free applications worth 2,500 rupees.

RIM, which will start selling the new phone in India on Thursday, will launch it in a number of other countries in coming weeks, Carlo Chiarello, executive vice president of RIM's smartphone division, told reporters.

The BlackBerry Curve 9220 has a dedicated key for accessing BlackBerry Messenger and FM radio, along with a 2 mega pixel camera, and works on second-generation mobile networks.

RIM's BlackBerry devices have struggled to compete with Apple Inc's iPhone and iPad and a slew of devices based on Google's Android platform, and the Canadian company reported a quarterly loss last month as sales of its phones slumped.
