February, 2011 Newsletter

Greetings to everyone

"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I am forced to announce the dissolution of the Mid Coast Sail and Power Squadron. The Squadron was founded on March 13th 1992 and has been a positive force on the mid coast as its members have fostered boating safety through education for the past almost 20 years. I feel that it would be fitting that the end of the Squadron be on its 20th anniversary, a year from now on March 13th 2012.

The Squadron has seen a decline i...

August, 2010 Newsletter

I sure hope that you've taken advantage of the great weather for boating. I took on too many projects and have not gotten out on the water in our boat with Doris, and the summer is drawing to a close. With any luck, the fall will give us some more good weather.

At the Spring District Conference two years ago, Doris and I won, with the highest bid, a trip aboard Al Newton's 28 foot motor boat, PRECIOUS GEM. Al is a member of the Portland Head Squadron. This trip included motoring from Yarmou...

Commander's Message
Greetings to everyone
I wasn’t prepared for the arrival of spring. One day it was rainy and cold. The next day it was sunny and warm. I wasn’t thinking far enough ahead. I wasn’t thinking, “It’s time to start preparing the boats for launching. Now I’m weeks, maybe a whole month, behind in my preparation schedule. I hope all of you are more ready for the time your boats go into the water. I hope you are less the procrastinator than I am.

Our season is so short comp...

The Rose Line and the Compass Rose

The Church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris contains a strip of brass that segments the sanctuary on a perfect north-south axis. It was an ancient sundial of sorts. The sun's rays, shining through the oculus on the south wall, moved farther down the line every day, indication the passage of time, from solstice to solstice.

The north-south stripe had been known as the Rose Line. For centuries, the symbol of the Rose had been associated with maps and guiding souls in the proper direction. The Compas...
