Understanding the Nature of God’s Forgiveness?

Understanding the Nature of God’s Forgiveness?

Scripture: Matthew 18: 21-35

The big question on Peter’s heart that needs an answer!

How often shall I forgive my brother who sins against me?

Peter suggested the answer, “Seven times?”

Jesus answers, No! “Seventy times seven.” 490 times

The story, “The Kingdom of heaven is like…” sets this parable in the context of Divine grace

1. The huge debt of our sin could never be repaid (Verse 24, 25)

2. This story is for those of us who are blind to our own sins

3. This story is for anybody finding it hard to forgive

4. Forgiveness always costs the innocent one, for he (the king) forgives the debt out of love and compassion. (Verse 26, 27)

5. The forgiven servant failed to embrace the principle of grace. (Verse 33-34)

a. He was very aggressive in going after a small debt because he was covering up a far bigger debt.

b. He didn’t receive the king’s love and forgiveness in his heart so he couldn’t pass it on

c. Everybody could see his blatant injustice except he, himself

d. At the end of day he was not free – but experienced endless torture

6. This story provides us with a strong motivation to forgive (Verse 35)<div class="feedflare">

Psalm 18

Psalm 18

A Psalm of David The Servant of the Lord, Who Spoke to the Lord The Words of This Song on the Day that the Lord Delivered Him from the Hand of All His Enemies and from the Hand of Saul.

1 And He Said: I will love You, O Lord, my strength.

2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies.

4 The pangs of death surrounded me, And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.

5 The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me.

6 In my distress I called upon the Lord, And cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, And my cry came before Him, even to His ears.

46 The Lord lives! Blessed be my Rock! Let the God of my salvation be exalted.<div class="feedflare">

Healing the Wounded Spirit

Healing the Wounded Spirit

Scripture: Luke 17:1-7

A person’s spirit will sustain him in sickness; but a wounded spirit who can bear it. (Proverbs 18:14)

How do we get wounded?

   1. From those who sin against us
   2. From our own personal sins
   3. From traumatic incidents
   4. From unhealthy responses to people and situations we have misinterpreted – just because we got hurt does not prove that someone has wronged us

Why is this an important issue?

    * Because wounded soldiers cannot go into battle
    * Because bitterness is long-held unforgiveness about a wound we received, and unforgiveness hinders prayer (Luke 11;4
    * Because hurting people hurt other people and it gets passed on.

How do you pray for the healing of wounds? (Luke 17:6, 7)

    * You can start with a speck of faith like a grain of mustard seed
    * Speak to the mulberry tree with its massive root system –remove it (Vs. 6)
    * Uprooting a wound will “hurt to heal”
    * Keep speaking God’s WORD over the wound – God will bring the healing

The words of Jesus to the wounded

    * “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Ps.147:3)
    * “By His wounds we are healed.” (Is. 53:5)
    * “He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted and set the oppressed free.” (Luke 4:18

Invite Jesus to minister to your wounds

    * “A bruised reed He will not break”
    * “A flickering wick He will not snuff out.” (Matt. 12:20)<div class="feedflare">

Where is God in Times of Crisis?

Where is God in Times of Crisis?

Scripture: Geneses 16

What created this crisis between Abram, Sarai and Hagar?

Impatience with God
Jealousy
Abram’s lack of leadership in his marriage
Sarai so mistreated Hagar that she fled

Two questions to ask when running from a crisis. (Verse 8)

How did I get here?
Where am I going?

Two necessary responses when running from a crisis (Verse 9)

Go back and face the situation
Go with the promise God gave you

Encountering God in times of crisis (Verse 13, 14)

Hagar, “You are the God who sees me.”
Hagar, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”
Give it a name to remember the experience. “Beer Lahai Roi”<div class="feedflare">

Simon and The Woman

Simon and The Woman

Luke 7:36-50

Simon

- Get

- Was concerned with what was going on around him

- Invited Jesus to come to him

- Wanted to know what Jesus would do

- Questioned the validity of Jesus

The Woman

- Give

- Was concerned with what was going on in her heart

- Went looking for Jesus

- Wanted to know who Jesus was

- Proved the valididty of Christ

The focus of what God is doing in your life takes place in you, not around you.

What is present when we peal back the layers of our heart?

Searching our hearts for the reasons we do "church".

Are our hearts hard and cold or soft and pliable?

It’s Time To Be Humble

Living With No Regrets
It’s Time To Be Humble

Learn from your losses

The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. (Luke 22:61, 62)

Take responsibility for your failures

“A person who refuses to admit his sins can never be successful. But if he confesses and forsakes them, he discovers God’s mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13)

Get complete release from your guilt

“But go, tell his disciples and Peter, “He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him just as he told you.” (Mark 16:7)

All champions in the bible:
1. Sensed a call
2. Hit the wall
3. Had a fall (on their knees)
4. Rose up and stood tall

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. (Psalm 20: 7, 8)<div class="feedflare">

Love Completely

Living with No Regrets

Love Completely

John 15: 9-17

The defining question: “If you knew you had one month to live how would you live it?” Relationships really matter!

Five regrets to loving relationships:

1. The regret of a “Me first” life pattern
2. The regret of disloyalty
3. The regret of destructive communication
4. The regret of trying to change others by control
5. The regret of not forgiving or asking for forgiveness

The four greatest biblical principles in learning how to love completely

   1. Jesus calls for sacrifice and commitment (verse 13)
   2. Learn how to be faithful and loyal (verse 14)
   3. Develop loving, honest and transparent communication (verse 15)
   4. Unconditional love the key for change (verse 16)<div class="feedflare">

Live Passionately
Luke 5:18-26

When you think about it, we don’t have control over many things in life. We didn’t get to decide where we were born, who are parents are, or which time period or culture we live in. We don’t get to decide the dates on our gravestone. Only God knows when out time is up on this earth. It could be next week or next year or decades away. But there is one thing we have a vast amount of control over. We get to decide how we are going to live today!

“So love the Lord God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence and energy.” Mark 12:30 (Msg)

“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” Rom. 12:11 (NIV)

1. Step out of the routine and do something drastic (verse 18)
      Realize its do or die!

2. Push back when meeting the unexpected (verse 19)
Miracles seem more frequent beyond the point of our normal response.

3. Create space for God where there seems to be no space (verse 19)

4. Accept the grace He extends to you (verse 20)

5. Keep a reminder of the remarkable things you see each day. (Verse 24-26)<div class="feedflare">

Titus Chapter 3

Titus Chapter 3

Paul urges them to REMEMBER:

1. Remember how you are called to live (Titus 3:1-2)

2. Remember who you were (Titus 3:3)

3. Remember what God did for you (Titus 3:4-7)

4. Remember your mission in this world (Titus 3:8-11)

The good news of God...
...is that while we were at our worst, Jesus died for us which freed us from our penalty of death.

1 Thessalonians 5:9-10

9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him.<div class="feedflare">

Titus Chapter 2

In chapter 1 we saw why Paul wanted elders in every city in Crete: To protect the purity and integrity of the gospel. Now in Chapter II we see what Paul wanted Titus to teach to the people of Crete.

“… speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine.” (vs. 1)

3 Reasons Paul Gives Titus for Teaching Sound Doctrine:

1. So that no-one can malign the Word of God. (vs 5)
2. So that those who oppose you may be ashamed, because they have nothing bad to say. (vs 8)
3. So that the teaching about God is attractive. (vs 10)

11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self‑controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,13 while we wait for the blessed hope–the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.<div class="feedflare">

Titus Chapter 1

In chapter 1 we will look at Paul’s instruction to Titus to set up Church eldership on the island of Crete. Why did they need elders and what were they protecting against? What kind of people was the Apostle Paul looking for?

QUALIFICATION FOR ELDERSHIP (Verses 5-9)

An elder must be above reproach.
A good elder/leader must be a tested follower of Christ’s teaching.

REASON FOR ELDERSHIP (Verses 10-16)

To protect against religious tradition & commandments of men.
To protect against the JESUS-AND gospel.

The JESUS-AND gospel can only lead to:

1. Pride
2. Despair
3. Apathy

16 They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.

Practical atheism is when we SAY we believe in God but by our ACTIONS we deny is authority in our lives.<div class="feedflare">

Standing Tall in Tough Times - Jim Polhemus

Standing Tall in Tough Times

This morning we will examine 3 men who are well known biblical characters, and who failed in situations to stand up for what they believed. Pilate, Aaron, and Solomon all wanted to satisfy the crowd. They gave us 3 fundamental flaws that we want to stay away from.

1. They didn’t speak up when they knew something was wrong. (Mark 15:10, Exodus 32:22, 1 Kings 11:2)

2. They went along with the “mob-mentality”. (Mark 15:14, Exodus 32:23, 1 Kings 11:4)

3. They succumbed to peer pressure. (Mark 15:15, Exodus 32:23, 1 Kings 11:6)

These men were politically powerful, religiously connected, and in Solomon’s case, the greatest in riches & wisdom above all other kings of the earth. (1 Kings 10:23)

We as Christians can take 3 steps to stand tall amidst the everyday pressures we face.

1. Develop a solid Christ based foundation from which everything else grows.
(Matt. 7:24-29)

2. Develop the ability to stand against opposition. (Galatians 5:1)

3. Practice clear thinking in difficult times. (Colossians 3:1-4)

Joseph, Daniel, and Stephen displayed strength in order to impact their situations and make a lasting change.

1. Joseph ~ Genesis 39:9-23

2. Daniel ~ 6:10-23

3. Stephen ~ Acts 7:1-60<div class="feedflare">

The Father Heart of Paul (part one)

The Father Heart of Paul (part one)

The Importance of “Father” to Paul

   1. Paul had a special relationship to God as Father (Rom. 8:15, Gal. 4:6)
   2. Paul viewed himself as a spiritual father, and his role as father was very important to him (1 Cor. 4:15, 2 Cor. 6:13, Gal 4:19, 2 Tim. 1:2, Titus 1:4)
   3. Paul saw himself as being in a lineage of father’s that led back to God the Father (Eph. 3:14-15)

Five Ways Paul Loves His Children

   1. Attention (time) – A father’s heart is an attentive heart (Rom. 1:9-10, 1 Cor. 1:4, 2 Tim. 1:3)
   2. Affection – A father’s heart is filled with affection for his children (2 Tim. 1:2-4, I Cor. 4:17, 2 Cor. 6:11-13) - Hugs, kisses, and words of affection (“I love you, I miss you, I can’t wait to see you again” - Affection must always be unconditional
   3. Affirmation – A father’s heart overflows with affirmation (I Cor. 16:13, 1 Tim. 4:12, 1 Tim. 6:11-14, I Thess. 2:11, 2 Tim. 2:1, 2 Tim. 4:1-2) - “You can do it, I believe in you!”
   4. Approval – A father’s heart gives approval for a job well done (2 Cor. 7:4, 1 Thess. 2:20, 2 Thess. 1:4) - “Good job, I’m so proud of you, way to go!”
   5. Admonishment – A father’s heart gives admonition when needed - It is never shaming (1 Cor. 4:14) - It always strives to build up, not tear down (2 Cor. 13:10)<div class="feedflare">

Guiding our Youth in Today’s Hyper Sexual Culture

Guiding our Youth in Today’s Hyper Sexual Culture

There are 6.6 sexual incidents per hour on daytime television soap operas

1 out of 8 television shows depicts or strongly implies sexual intercourse

Prime-time television has 25 instances of sexual behavior for every one instance of preventive behavior or comment

Movies most popular with youth contain multiple instances of sexual intercourse in less than two hours

The U.S. spends $13.3 billion a year on adult entertainment (more than professional sporting events)

50% of people who stay in corporate hotel chains purchase adult films on in-room pay-per-view systems

Playboy web site averages 5 million hits per day

About 80% of students in a poll at James Madison University said they had hooked up during their four years of college

They also had an average of 11 hook-up partners in college

Five Biblical Principles to Guide us in Light of Today’s Sexual Culture

1. We need to know the devastating toll sexual sin will take on us. Do you want to pay this kind of price? (1 Corinthians 3:16, 17; 6: 16-18)

2. We need to know how serious God takes it when we don’t control our own sexual urges and take advantage of another sister or brother. Are you aware of these consequences? (I Thessalonians 4: 3-7))

3. We need to nurture the wholesome yearning in life for intimacy (John 15) Most sexual sin is a counterfeit for someone’s search for intimacy

4. We need to act on the power of covenanting with God (Job 31:1)

5. We can enjoy this wonderful, life-giving relationship of knowing our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in us. (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20)<div class="feedflare">

GOT KIDS?
               Got questions?

The Five most important principles you need to know about raising your children.

   1. Build a bridge to your child for nurture and correction (Ephesians 6:4)

   2. Learn the delicate balance between freedom and responsibility. (John 8:31)

   3. Learn to cooperate with God’s built-in consequences of pain or reward (Galatians 6:7-10)

   4. Know the difference between punishment and discipline. (Hebrews 10:30

   5. Be constantly training your children in the big three: Obedience, Respect and Responsibility. (Ephesians 6:1-3)<div class="feedflare">

How thirsty are you?

HOW THIRSTY ARE YOU?
John 7:37-39)
Pentecost Sunday

37. On the last day and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out with a loud voice saying, If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.

38. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

39. But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Historical setting of this scripture:

Do you Know What you are Thirsty for?

Come to Me
Drink
Believe in Me as the Scriptures say
Out of your heart will flow rivers (springs) of living water
What is the Nature of These Springs?

The living Springs come by receiving the Holy Spirit
The supernatural Springs flowing from this Rock are now in us
The power effected in us goes far beyond our natural ability
The Springs can dry up and they can be revived
The Holy Spirit came on Pentecost (Acts 1: 4-8; 2: 1-42)

They waited because they were thirsty
The Holy Spirit came upon them in a visible presence
It turned cowardly persons hung up with their personal junk into bold powerful ambassadors for Christ.
Miracles, signs, wonders, gifts and fruit came with the Spirit
The promise of the Holy Spirit is to all men, women, sons and daughters

Let those who are thirsty come; and let all who wish take the free gift of the water of life. (Revelation 22:17)<div class="feedflare">

Will Your Faith Fail?

Will Your Faith Fail?

Luke 5:3-11

“When the Son of Man returns, will He really find faith on the earth?” Luke 18:8

If Jesus is concerned about our ability to remain people who live by faith, then we need to ask the question of ourselves as well.

What happens to my faith--

When I have to leave all for Him.
Matthew 6:33, Our greatest concern or attention is generally not the Kingdom of God, rather-----

When I can’t go with Him.
Mark 5:18-20, “..he begged Him (Jesus) that he could go with Him. However, Jesus did not permit him,….”

      3. When His directives make little sense.

Luke 5:3-11, God tells us to go fishing in the day time when we all know that the time to fish with nets is at night. We did it and it didn’t work. Then why would it work now?<div class="feedflare">

70 x 7
(Embarrassing isn’t it?)
Matthew 18:21-35

There is nothing as foundational to the Christian faith, than the reality and value of forgiveness of our sins through Jesus Christ. For various reasons we seem comfortable to quickly accept God’s unfailing forgiveness, yet at times, fail to extend that same measure to others. We have our reasons, of course, but we easily complicate forgiveness.
Jesus never did that. He just kept reminding us to forgive.

You don’t understand me.
We become intoxicated by the injustices done to us
“Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive…..” Matthew 6:12

The smallest offense is ignored –
‘It’s not my responsibility it’s their problem.’
        Matthew 18:21-35

You can’t move forward until you go back.
We find new friends rather than repair old bridges
“…and you remember that your brother has something against you….. go….” Matthew 5:23

The issue of ‘pay-back’
‘After all I’ve done for you, you did this to me?’

“…that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him…”
2 Corinthians 5:14-15

What do Mothers Teach us About the Heart of God?

What do Mothers Teach us About the Heart of God?

Mother’s exemplify the nature of God’s comfort
Isaiah 66:13

“As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”

Mother’s live out God’s heart of sacrifice
Isaiah 49:15-16

“Can a mother forget her own baby, and not love the child she bore” Even if a mother could forget her child, I will never forget you. Jerusalem, I could never forget you! I have written your name on the palms of my hands.”

Mother’s display God’s protective heart
Luke 13:34

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!”

Mother’s reflect the gentle nurturing heart of God
1 Thessalonians 2:7

“As an apostle of Christ we certainly had a right to make some demands of you, but we were as gentle among you as a mother feeding and caring for her own children.”

Mother’s pass on the godly training to be content and secure in God’s presence
Psalm 131:1-2

“O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.”<div class="feedflare">

The Weakest Link

The Weakest Link
Acts 16 The Call to Macedonia

When the Son of Man comes will He really find faith on the earth?” Luke 18:8

‘We say we are searching. That is a great thing – to search for God and truth. Typically, however we are seeking Him sometimes, occasionally, when it occurs to us, or for a deep moment or two, - like an encounter with death, or shocking injustice or personal loss - but then the moment passes and it is gone. The search is gone. It is unwise and dishonorable to call such a haphazard process a search.’

Jacob Needleman ‘Why Can’t We Be Good?’

   1. Our passions affect endurance
“For we are laborers together with God.” 1 Corinthians 3:9
“…present your bodies a living sacrifice which is your reasonable service.” Romans 12:1

   2. Relationships expose our expectations
“Have you been with me so long, and yet you do not know Me, Philip?”
              John 14:9

   3. Our study or searching, is determined by hunger
Bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
           (2 Corinthians 10:5)

“Study to show yourself approved unto God, a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed…..” 2 Timothy 2:15

We generally fail to grow deep in what is not forced on us.<div class="feedflare">

He will magnify himself and say unheard-of things against God.

He will show no respect for his heritage or elders (37)

He will use great force, might makes right (38-39)

He will be a briber and honor lobbyist who line his pockets (39)

He will become the most heartless power broker in the world on his way to accumulating the world’s power and wealth. (40-43)

HE WILL BE DEFEATED, HE WILL COME TO HIS END, AND NO ONE WILL HELP HIM (45)

Daniel ask, “My Lord, what shall the outcome be of all this?”

These will be the worse times in world events since the history of nations. (12:1)

Everyone whose name is written in the “book”-will be delivered.

AS FOR YOU, GO YOUR WAY TILL THE END! (13)<div class="feedflare">

God Has Set the Calendar in Motion -Can Anyone Stop It?

God Has Set the Calendar in Motion -Can Anyone Stop It?

Daniel 9:20-27 & Chapter 10

Review: Overview of chapters 1-8

By the end of God’s world calendar six things have taken place. (9:24)

   1. “to finish transgression” 4. “to bring everlasting righteousness’
   2. “to put an end to sin” 5. “to seal up vision and prophecy”
   3. “to atone for wickedness” 6. “to anoint the most holy”

God’s time clock is set in motion by this event. (9:25)

    * The issuing of the decree to rebuild Jerusalem starts the clock
    * It will take 7 “sevens” = 49 years to rebuild Jerusalem
    * In another 62 “sevens” = 434 years the Messiah was to be crucified
    * Jerusalem and the temple will be (were) destroyed in 70 A.D by Roman armies under Titus (9:26)
    * The final 1 “seven” (7 years) described (9:27)

How does the unseen realm affect world events? (Chapter 10)

    * Who is Michael? – His name means “who is like God?”
    * Angels seem to have three distinct ministries
o Michael is the archangel leading the warrior angels
o Gabriel is the archangel in charge of the messenger angels
o Lucifer seems to have been in charge of the worship angels
o Satan is nothing more or less than the fallen archangel named Lucifer
o Satan has his “princes” ruling in the heavenly realms assigned to earthly empires and humans who govern them including the structures of life such as family, schools, arts, media, etc.
o The importance of the angelic fight with the prince of Persia and Greece. (Verse 20)

God can only entrust this kind of encounter and information to someone like Daniel.<div class="feedflare">

The Representative

Daniel 9

The Representative

Perseverance vs. Procrastination

1. Who has the time?

Daniel 6:10 ‘And Daniel went to the open window, knelt down and prayed and gave thanks three times a day, as was his custom since early days.’

2. Whose problem is it?

Daniel 9:10 “We have not obeyed the voice of the Lord….”

Whether we have or have not been complicit to the problem, we are all capable of it and so include ourselves as we cry out to God for mercy on us and our world.

3. Who will God listen to?

Daniel 9:23 ”… and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved..”

Ezekiel 22:30 “So I looked for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me in behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found no one.”

To re-present someone is to, with all due diligence, give others an undistorted view of the one being represented.

Daniel 6:16 As Darius the king prepared to have Daniel thrown to the lions he said to Daniel; “Your God, whom you serve continually, He will deliver you.”<div class="feedflare">

Defining Moments

Daniel 8

Defining Moments

“But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets….” Daniel 2:28

“….the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.” Daniel 4:25

The validity of the messenger
Matthew 24:14-15, “Therefore when you see…..as spoken of by the prophet Daniel…..”

Daniel was a man that had integrity, wisdom, and approval from God, consequently we look carefully at what he writes.

The sovereignty of God
Daniel 1:2, 2:28,37, 4:25

He is the author of the message, the messenger, and the ultimate kingdom.

God moves in times and ways of His own choosing.

The significance of the message
Acts 1:7-8, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons…”

Matthew 16:3, “Hypocrites! You know how to discern the weather, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.”

Understanding something of the ways and strategies of God.

4. The conclusion

- God is in control

- Remain faithful regardless of the cost

- Reject bitterness

- Rest in the providence of God<div class="feedflare">

The Count Down to this World’s Destiny

The Count Down to this World’s Destiny

Daniel Chapter Seven

The setting: Rewind the clock to the first year of Belshazzar’s reign.

Four beasts came up out of the Mediterranean Sea in the midst of a powerful storm representing 4 world empires

Babylon
Medo-Persian
Grecian
Roman

What is the exact meaning of the forth beast? (verse 19)

He was exceedingly dreadful, teeth of iron and claws of bronze. He devoured, crushed and trampled everything under his feet. The 10 horns represent 10 kingdoms. A little horn (king) will arise out of the 10 and subdue 3 kings. He will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints.

There are four names in the Bible for this person

   1. “The Man of Lawlessness” 2 Thessalonians 2:1-10
   2. “The Beast” Revelation 13:1-8
   3. “The Antichrist” 1 John 2:18
   4. “The Little Horn” Daniel 7:8

He is an intellectual genius (Dan. 8:23) oratorical genius (Dan.11:36) political genius (Rev. 17:11-12), commercial genius (Dan.11:43; Rev.13:16, 17), military genius (Rev: 6:2; 13:2), a religious genius (2 Thess. 2:4; Rev.13:8)

Nothing is more dangerous than an evil genius!

The “Ancient of Days” God the Father enters the world court as the Chief Justice of the Universe. (Verse 9-10)

    * He sat on a chariot throne
    * The books were opened before Him
    * He judged in favor of the saints and the beast was slain

Jesus, the Son is welcomed by the “Ancient of Days” to receive His everlasting kingdom (verse 13, 14)

    * The saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom with Him and will possess it forever, yes forever and ever (verse 18,27)<div class="feedflare">

(Verse 9-10) * He sat on a chariot throne * The books were opened before Him * He judged in favor of the saints and the beast was slain Jesus, the Son is welcomed by the “Ancient of Days” to receive His everlasting kingdom (verse 13, 14) * The saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom with Him and will possess it forever, yes forever and ever (verse 18,27)</itunes:summary>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://media.monkserve.com/EKK/150/mcch20090308.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

Daniel Chapter Six

A new government but the same old human nature

    * The plot against Daniel included jealousy, deception, murder and flattery. (verses 4-9)
    * Even Daniel’s enemies acknowledged that he was reliable, neither corrupt nor negligent.

The ideal set up for a compromise (verses10-14

    * The new law only forbade the making of petitions to God, and that for only 30 days out of the year, one month out of an entire lifetime.
    * Why not pray in a closet for 30 days instead of in front of his window?
    * It was not as though he was asked to deny his faith or publicly worship an idol or image.
    * Daniel knew the 70 year duration of their captivity was up. His people could soon return to Jerusalem. He prayed his whole life for this, why die now, it seems utterly pointless.

They called for a stone to be placed over the door of the lions den with the king’s seal on it so Daniel’s situation could not be changed! (verse 17)

    * Many of us know of another case where a STONE was to seal an opening so the situation could not be changed!
    * This is not a darling little children’s Sunday school story! Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him standing firm in the faith… (1 Peter 5:8,9)

There’s an exciting dimension to living in our Babylon (vs. 25-28)

    * There are gloriously intense encounters with God!
    * Ultimately Babylon can’t destroy you, if you’re living a life of integrity.
    * It’s great to see worldly heathen kings becoming so impressed with our God that they influence entire empires!<div class="feedflare">

God Writes on the Wall

God Writes on the Wall

Daniel Chapter 5

The setting of Daniel chapter 5:

    * Nebuchadnezzar has been dead for 23 years
    * He was succeeded by his son Evil-Merodach, who ruled two years and was assassinated by his brother-in-law Neriglissar
    * Neriglissar ruled four years and was succeeded by his young son Labashi-Marduk who was assassinated after two months, Nabonidus became king
    * Nabonidus was the last king of Babylon. He appointed his oldest son Belshazzar as co-regent in his absence

It€™s a big deal when someone treats that which is holy as unholy (verses 1-6)

    * Belshazzar, heady with wine orders the gold and silver vessels taken from the temple in Jerusalem be brought in to the party to make a toast to their gods
    * These vessels were anointed and consecrated to God, which means they were declared holy, to be treated as holy and set apart exclusively for God. (Lev. 8:10-11; 2 Chron. 7:16)

We, too are holy vessels in the house of the Lord. ( 1 Cor. 6:15)

    * Our bodies are declared holy vessels by God
    * He has anointed us, put His Spirit in us, set a seal of ownership upon us-the Lord knows those who are His (Eph. 4:30)

Satan€™s number one goal is attempting to desecrate what God has declared holy. (1 Cor. 3: 16,17; 6: 12-20; 1 Thess. 4)

    * What Belshazzar did to these vessels in his drunken orgy is exactly what the devil tries to do with us
    * The devil€™s greatest glee is to see us give our bodies over to an unholy cause
    * Sexual sin is an assault against our body. When we lose the battle, we wear this sin and its shame as no other
    * Mene, Mene-to number,  tekel-to weigh, peres-to divide

God has number the days of your reign and brought it to an end. You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians
Vessels that have been treated as unholy can be treated as holy again. (Ezra 1:2,7-8; 8:28-29)<div class="feedflare">

An Open Letter From King Nebuchadnezzar

An Open Letter From King Nebuchadnezzar
Daniel Chapter Four

Four steps in my spiral downward on the way to hitting bottom

   1. Sitting in the lap of luxury while God was in fact rocking my world (verse 4)
   2. Refusing to acknowledge that €œHeaven Rules.€ (verse 26)
   3. Not recognizing how sin gets a grip on you. (verse 27)
   4. Totally losing touch with the poor and not providing a platform for the oppressed to be heard. (verse 27)

Make sure you learn this in the class room-You don€™t want to learn this one on a field trip. (verse 28-33)

   1. God€™s patience is geared toward our repentance
   2. Deal with your stuff or your stuff will deal with you.
   3. A bit of what happened to Nebuchadnezzar happens to all of us.
   4. Is there anything like a life long lesson?

€œI€™m coming back,€ - a changed man (verse 34-37)

   1. My sanity was restored
   2. I now praise, exalt and glorify the King of heaven
   3. I now acknowledge that €œHeaven Rules.€
   4. I€™ll never forget that those who keep walking on in pride, He is able to humble

Image Building = All of Our Insecurities at Work
Daniel Chapter three

Six ways to know if this image in Babylon is defining us:

1. Attempting to make impressions that are bigger than we really are.(1)
2. Needing the strokes of VIPs. (2, 3)
3. Self-worship €œI am, and there is none besides me.€ (Isa. 47:8, 10)
4. Setting up situations where others are motivated to worship us(4-7)
5. Making demanded displays of loyalty. (8-15)
6. Anger when our elaborate self-scheme is opposed. (13, 19)

Three tests of our faith brought on by the fire. 16-27 (Hebrews 11)

   1. Deliverance faith €“ we can be delivered from the fire.
   2. Enduring faith €“ we can be delivered through the fire.
   3. Commended (graduating) faith €“ we can be delivered by the fire into the arms of Jesus.

The three friends were already committed to the flames before they knew precisely what form of deliverance they would experience.

Complete deliverance by Jesus, the fourth man in the fire, means that only the ropes (i.e. those things that bind us) are removed in the fire. We are refined with no hair singed, without the smell of smoke and only what€™s €œfake€ is burned.<div class="feedflare">

Dreams, Mystery, Risk Taking and Daniel Hears From Heaven

Dreams, Mystery, Risk Taking and Daniel Hears From Heaven

Scripture: Daniel chapter two

Nebuchadnezzar:
A troubling but impacting dream (Vs.1-13)

Tell me what I dreamed and tell me what it meant.
Or I will cut you into pieces and burn your houses (Vs.5)

Daniel shows great wisdom and tact-but what a risk (Vs. 14-23)

Heaven rewards risk takers

There is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. (Vs. 24-28)

The dream and its interpretation by Daniel (Vs. 29-45)

The centerpiece of this dream is the Kingdom that God establishes (Vs. 44-45)

The greatest ruler: Jesus, a stone cut out without hands.

This kingdom is indestructible, infallible and all-victorious

It is a universal kingdom and will stand forever

The decisive moment for this kingdom takes shape during the fourth empire.<div class="feedflare">

Godly Living in a Secular Age

Godly Living in a Secular Age
Scripture: Daniel the first chapter

Drive through the suburbs of modern Baghdad today and you will find the scattered ruins of ancient Babylon. In this new series based on the book of Daniel, we€™ll see, through the paintbrush of scripture, Babylon rise from the dust, robe herself in riches, and paint her face like a woman of the night. Make no mistake: she aims to seduce. Posing as the beautiful life, she morphs into the current image of what every worldly man or woman wants to be-deserves to be. She is popular. She is desirable. She is intoxicating. And did I say religious? Ah, yes. She believes in so much of everything that one would be hard-pressed to tell if she believes in anything. To worship self is to worship her. She is dressed for success, but underneath she is a lifeless mannequin, a fake, a poser. Her prop is the devil himself.

Few could resist Babylon€™s charms but Daniel holds his place in Scripture because he was one of the few. Join us as we develop alarms for Babylon€™s charms, Sunday€™s January 25th €“ April 5th

What happens when the sins of the culture become the sins of the church and God says, €œEnough?€ (Verse 1, 2)

He sends us back to revisit our past long enough to repent.

Four powerful influences to compromising with the Babylonian culture

1. Enticing integration (Verse 3)
2. Wholesale indoctrination (Verse 4)
3. It seems cool to compromise (Verse 6)
4. We face identity confusion (Verse 7)

We are surrounded by a Babylon of our own.

1. We place a high premium on age, appearance, intelligence and social status. (Verse 4)
2. We no longer blush or have shame over sin (Jer. 6:15)
3. Complete self absorption and self worship. €œI am, and there is none besides me.€ (Isa. 47:10)
4. There is nothing more dangerous then a friendly Babylon
5. In spite of Babylon€™s charms it never stays friendly.

We all are in danger of becoming spiritually irrelevant without resolve. (Verse 8-21)

1. Resolve that you will never be ashamed of Jesus in all your relationships and activities.
2. Resolve that you will have your entire learning process pass the grid of God€™s revealed truth.
3. Resolve that you will bring moral clarity to all your choices.
4. Resolve that you are of royal seed and a King€™s kid.

MCCh VISION: Acts 2:42-47

42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, 45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. 46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

Leadership Transition: Running with Purpose

Leadership Transition: Running with Purpose
Hebrews 12: 1-3

Four important principles to remember during a transition
1. Run the race that is marked out for you - For us
2. Be aware of the sin that gets you so easily tangled up
3. Learn from those who have run the race before us
4. Lets keep our focus and stay on course

My personal race

What we as a leadership team have discussed so far:
1. We have used the symbol of a relay with the passing on of the baton.
2. The transition would be over a period of time. The timing has not yet been determined but we will be trying to do what is most helpful for the church.
3. We will get an outside consultant to help lead this process.

What would my future role be with Maple City Chapel?
1. I will take the role that the leadership team and I believe is the most helpful for the church.

What can the church expect from us?
1. We will try to stay current with our communication about the transition process
2. We will process this decision in various layers as we have with past major decisions.
3. Each of you will be given a voice in the final decision.

What would we like from you?

1. Pray about this leadership transition process
2. Give us you Spirit led discernment and wise counsel along the way
3. Be patient with us - we have not gone this way before<div class="feedflare">

Forming Rock Like Faith From The Journey

Joshua 4: 6-24

The superstructures of our lives are built upon the foundation of our memories. We are instructed by our memories as to the most creative way to live in the present, and they help equip us with a positive hope for the future. This scripture helps us understand that hope for the future is actually nourished from memories of the past-which helps bring meaning to the present. Memories are important!

Would I have Found Him?

Would I have Found Him?

We still look for Him, and wonder at His ways as we try and come to terms with His ability to hide His profoundness in plain sight.

How could anyone know that they were to follow a star to find a King?

The quest of the wise men and their subsequent success offers reassurance to us that even the most unexplainable and difficult ways of God can be discovered and followed.

1. Recognizing His directives.

2. Setting priorities to realize the goal.

3. Dealing with doubt.

4. Retaining strength for the quest.<div class="feedflare">

Does the Cross Have Power for You?

Does the Cross Have Power for You?

I Corinthians 1:17-31

The problem in the Church at Corinth was that Christians were seeking to promote their own status inside the Christian community by introducing the worldly wisdom of eloquent preaching and prideful self-achievements.

What empties the cross of its power? (Verse 17)

1. Promoting human wisdom for the answers to life
2. Depending on our cleverness to bring about life change.

The preaching of the cross divides people in two groups: (Verse 18)

1. It is foolishness to those who are pereshing.
2. It is the power of God to those who are being saved.

God is out to reject the wisdom of this world (Verse 19)

1. He will dystroy their wisdom and frustrate their intelligence.

God gets great pleasure from what the world calls €œfoolish preaching.€ (Verse 20-25)

1. People are actually getting saved and the power and wisdom of God is changing them!

Listen to the refreshing wisdom of God (Verses 26-30)

1. God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise.
2. God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
3. God chose the lowly things of this world and the €œdespised nobodies€ to nullify the "somebody€™s.€

WHY (verses 17, 29, 31)

So that the cross of Christ won€™t be emptied of its power
So that we know better than to personally boast before Him!
So that we will only boast in the Lord<div class="feedflare">

The IT Factor That Impresses God and Guards Your Rear

The IT Factor That Impresses God and Guards Your Rear
Scripture: Isaiah 58; Matthew 25

When we meet, is it present? How can we tell?
Do first time attenders experience it ? Can it be programmed into our gatherings? Where can I buy it ? If it doesn€™t show €well, why not? WHAT is it anyhow?

If any of you see a brother or sister in need and you have material possessions to do something about it but turn a cold shoulder and do nothing, what happens to God€™s love? It disappears. And you made it disappear. (1John 3:17) Message Bible

George Barna€™s research poll:
1. Only 14 % of Bible-believing Christians believe that poverty is an issue that the church should address.

The complexity of ministering to the poor in today€™s culture
1. Who are the poor?
2. Who are the €œshake down€ artists? (John 6:26)
3. Who are the lazy and irresponsible? (2 Th. 3:10-12)
4. Who will use you and disrespect you? (Matthew 7:6)
5. Who are the ones trapped in a cycle of poverty and hopelessness?

Four actions that impress God (Isaiah 58:7, 8)
1. Share your food with the hungry
2. Provide shelter for the poor
3. Supply clothing for those who need it
4. Don€™t turn away from helping your relatives

You do these and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard!
God rewards and indicts the global Church on the basis of its actions to the poor. (Matthew 25:31-46)
Reward- €œCome you blessed of My Father inherit the kingdom€
Indictment- €œDepart from Me, you cursed, into everlasting fire...
The sins of omission are the most serious with the outcome of eternal punishment
Observations:
We will encounter Jesus in the final judgment and one of the determining factors will be our actions toward the poor.

Both sides seem unaware of the impact of their behavior
Christ identifies with the poor so completely that these deeds of love done to €œthe least of these€ are the same as if done to Him.<div class="feedflare">

It Only Works if You Drink It

It Only Works if You Drink It

John 4: 1-42

v.14 €œWhosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.€

When we meet, is it present?

How can we tell? Do first time attenders experience it? Can it be programmed into our gatherings? Where can I buy it ? If it doesn€™t show €well, why not? WHAT is

it anyhow?

It is not unusual that we come to God on a regular basis, yet seldom seem to experience the thirst quenching relationship that we want and that should be ours.

Either there is a problem with the water or we are not drinking it. Here is a woman that responds immediately and completely to a brief encounter with Jesus? She not only changes, but because of her response her city is changed. What did she do that we don€™t?

1. An awareness of and a willingness to address the thirst within.

v.15 €œSir give me this water that I may never thirst, nor come here to draw.€

2. A willingness to change priorities when confronted with a solution.

v.28 €œAnd the woman then left her water pot and went her way€.€

3. A willingness of personal exposure for the sake of something greater.

v.29 €œCome and see a Man that told me all things that I ever did.€

v.39 €œAnd many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman€.€
