Directions for Bible Study Dinner tomorrow

Hello friends!

Thanks to all who RSVPed either yay or nay. For those of you who can make it, below are directions for getting there. I know some people are planning on car-pooling, so feel free to contact anybody if you need a ride (Robin's number is 937-371-4737, Mary's is 585-755-6000 and Boahema's is 301-452-3076). If you didn't RSVP but can now make it, please let me (Robin) know ASAP so I can pass the word along to Mrs. Morehouse.

"We live at 374 Wellington Ave. which runs parallel to Genesee Street near Wilson Magnet High School. The corner we live on is Wellington and Aldine St. Aldine runs along the north side of Wilson HighSchool- we are two blocks up on the left hand side as you approach Wellington.Wellington also runs from Chili Avenue and Sawyer Street. Hope this places it for you."

This Week's Bible Study: RSVP for Dinner at Morehouses

Hello friends!

As we discussed last week, this week's Bible Study is a dinner held at with our advisors, Dr. Bill and Susan Morehouse. The dinner will be at their house and we will be joined by a few other doctor couples in the area. We have a main dish, a side, a salad, and a dessert, and Mrs. Morehouse said we could maybe bring bread and maybe another side and dessert. Mrs. Morehouse needs to know how many people to plan for, so please RSVP to me as SOON as possible, so I can give her a count by Tuesday morning.

Please RSVP to me by tomorrow (Monday) night and let me know if you would be interested in bringing one of the three possible additions.

The date is set for our MCCF Winter Breakfast focusing on Missions -
Saturday morning, January 23rd - and we're looking for more good
speakers. If you, or anyone you know, has gone on a medical missions
trip this past year and would like to share with our group about it,
please let us know.

So far we have Dr. Christine Birnie coming to present on an exciting
trip to Puné, India, that she and her group will have just come back
from. We're looking for about 3 other speakers to join us, so send your
suggestions as soon as they cross your mind.

Sorry for the late notice on this, but tomorrow's meeting is going to be at my house. Join us for some time of fellowship and time with the Word as we delve more into Corinthians. After graduation he did an additional year of post doctorate training in Orthopedic Surgery before completing his residency in Family Medicine. He recently received a Master of Arts in Theology from Northeastern Seminary and serves as Pastor of Faith Community Church in LeRoy. Hank has been married for over twenty years and has four children.

Just wanted to remind for tomorrow night and to let you know about something we are doing. I'm guessing you all have been getting E-mails about the upcoming Homeless Outreach Fair that some of our classmates are putting together. Our Christian Fellowship was specifically asked to participate in this outreach, and since part of our calling is to contribute to needy, we were thinking of doing a mini-offering-like thing at tomorrow's meeting. If you are interested in giving to this cause, please bring your spare change or a couple of dollars to contribute. All the money will be put to buying the supplies needed to give out in hygiene baggies to homeless people in Rochester.

Hello Friends!

First and foremost... to our fabulous first years: CONGRATS!!!! You have now finished (and probably did fabulous on) your first HSF Test! Just goes to show that prayer does work :)

OK, now on to the less important business. We just wanted to pass on the facts about this week's Bible Study and some other updates. This week's Bible Study will be this Wednesday, 10/7, at 7:00 at Robin and Melissa's house on 67 Southview Terrace (two streets down from the intersection of Elmwood and Mt Hope). There is parking if you choose to drive. We will be continuing our journey together through First Corinthians.

Also, you may recall that we had started to plan our fall retreat for this upcoming weekend at Mary's lake house. Due to some family things going on, we aren't able to do it this weekend as planned. We hope that this enough warning for you second years to plan a weekend vacation if you haven't already to celebrate the ending of MBB. We'll keep you posted on ideas for the rest of the fall.

Finally, a reminder about next Saturday, October 17 and the Christian Physician's Breakfast. We'll bring this up again on Wednesday, but Susan needs RSVPs if anyone wants to attend and learn about "dealing with the difficult medical climate and stress with Christian faith".

Keys of Thriving (Not Just Surviving!)

Last week when Dr. Joe Kearns, MD, Emergency Medicine, presented on Keys of Thriving (Not Just Surviving!) in Medical School and Beyond at PSU-Hershey’s Christian Medical Society lunch lecture, I couldn’t help but think this has ESN* written all over it. Below are a few main points which I culled/distilled from his presentation. Let me know what you think of their relevance to your graduate school/professional experience. Feel free to highlight, expand upon, or share a story in relationship to one or several points.

“Life is going to get better after…” This is just not true. Life doesn’t get any better after you finish your degree, it only changes. Note: it is particularly important to keep in mind the growing complexity of commitments/responsibilities with family, friends, community, church, workplace, professional societies. …
We must feed upon the Word of God. We need to learn how to live between Genesis and Revelation. As Jesus answered the tempter, by quoting Deuteronomy 8:3, “It is written, ‘Man doesn’t live only on bread. He also lives on every word that comes from the mouth of God’ “ (Matthew 4:4, NIV). Do not forget as you treat your patients [translate to your vocation/profession] that although the creation is broken, God created it all good. Furthermore, part of our mission as members of the Kingdom of God is to restore the creation. And one day God will bring full restoration in a new heaven and new earth.
Dwell in the wisdom literature, i.e., Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon. Why? Because in school you’ll get a lot of knowledge, but you’ll not engage with wisdom directly. Soak up the poetry, songs. A lot of life is vanity. Don’t take yourself so seriously. It’s important to keep yourself in perspective.
Be troubled by the account of the rich young ruler (Matthew 19:16-30). Why? Because being rich is a mixed blessing. The more you have, the more trouble you have. And having everything doesn’t make you happy.
In summary, the two things necessary to thrive in school and after graduation: read/query the Word of God AND have fellowship with the people of God no matter the work load. If you can’t do the two above, then quit school. Don’t become narrow and seek accolades. Before moving for your job, make sure there is a good match with a local congregation. Don’t focus on making money, limit your hours to be involved with community, church, family. Take time to interact with your patients (translate to your vocation/profession).
Jesus came to give life and give it abundantly, not just to survive in school. Without a relationship with the Creator, you don’t know who you are.

Summer reading idea

The Med Center group chose to discuss the theological concepts in Wm. Paul Young's book "The Shack" last year in their weekly Bible study, but it took Susan and I until July to catch up with them. It seems that we're latecomers to this New York Times bestseller, which now has over 7 million copies in print. If you haven't already, pick up a copy from a fellow student or get one online and read it this summer, sort through the issues and feelings it raises, then consider passing it on to someone else who might appreciate it. You'll find the time well-spent.

Next year's leaders

After having a very successful year of fellowship, Bible study, and social activity under the leadership of Shannon Andrews and Joseph Point du Jour, the group met over dinner at the home of Dr. Bill and Susan Morehouse, MCCF faculty advisors, and selected leadership for the coming year. Incoming leaders will include new 2nd year students Ellegant Pearson, Boahema Pinto, and Robin Valpey. Appreciation was expressed for the leadership content and style exemplified by Shannon and Joseph, and a strong appeal was made to encourage them and their classmates to remain active in the group instead of completely "disappearing" into their new 3rd year commitments.

Possible activities for the coming were discussed, which will be introduced to the incoming medical student class during the August Activities Fair at URMC. The group plans to continue its regular Thursday evening gathering for fellowship, study, and prayer and hopes to be able to add a time of worship to the evening as well. Everyone felt that rotating the gathering from one student home to another week by week was a great success and should be continued. Other ideas included regular social events, pot-blessing dinners with community preceptors, and educational events on campus which highlight aspects of medical practice that are fruitfully informed by Biblical understanding.

Communication with members about upcoming events will continue to be handled primarily through the URMCCF email listserve, but other methods were also discussed. For some events, flyers may be posted or entire medical school classes notified by email. We are also initiating this weblog, which will include messages posted to the listserve as well as other items, in an attempt to provide a central source of information about upcoming group events.
