Bring on the Fall....

noreply@blogger.com (Lynda Bruschini - icontact photo-graphics) — Wed, 26 Sep 2012 15:16:00 +0000

I need a challenge!

I love the Fall and the cool, crisp temps and changing colors of the leaves, it makes me feel alive and looking forward to the holidays approaching. Something in the air told me to try something I hadn't done before. While I can hardly believe I haven't done some papier-mâché it turns out I hadn't done anything as ambitious as this. As luck would have it I came across Stolloween, the blog of one talented Scott Stoll, that generously shared his skill and all the how-tos! His awesome crafts provided the challenge I was looking for and so I went for the "go BIG or go home" approach, not my best idea ~ but the following is what transpired...

Ghouls just wanna have fun!
My Halloween decorations, maybe more will grow out of this one sitting in the pumpkin patch but more likely, I'll just wait till next year...

I searched for something new to create
Not too hard just different, so I could decorate
With a funky look this Halloween
Finally I found a DIY craft, I'd never seen
So I tackled a how-to paper mâché prop
I love that it came out decent and I won't have to shop
To try and find something scary or cool
This will turn heads cause its a pumpkin patch ghoul.
Gilda Ghoul's her name, she's shades of orange and black
Just don't get too close cause she'll make you her snack.

"GG" is in the house!

Silly sketches of Someone I know..

Once Upon a time...

I've decided to try and fit in at least 1 sketch a month of people I think of and put them in a VERY short story. It's a fairly inside joke unless you happen to know them too. Be sure to keep watching to see if one day, you too - show up here.

An Artist and His Model
He was young at art, loved to paint and enjoyed nature but alas his name LaVinski was too often confused with DaVinci and his art was compromised, along with his identity. Until one day he decided to change his name to LeVinski and as luck would have it, a model named Cindy, fell head over heels for him - so they got married, bought furniture, moved North and shoveled snow. THE END

A sketch of the young LeVinskis - back in the day.
Even then, LeVinski had chin hair and Cindy had stars in her eyes.

Channeling Cartoon Art...

Along the road to improving my skills, I've been reading lots, struggling to "see" things differently and drawing outside my comfort zone. In the process, I pulled out all of my favorite cartoon, illustration books and even bought a few more to move things along and keep the inspiration flowing.
Among my favorites is Chuck Jones, so these sketches are in honor of one of the masters. Hope you approve of my sincere efforts Mr Jones, I'm still a work in progress.

Dream sketch

DREAM

Dream is the word of the day and day-dreams are one of my favorite places to hang out. I like to dream cause it means there's hope for your heart.

I could've drawn a child sleeping all tucked in their bed but a little kitten wondered into my thoughts, got comfortable, curled up in my head and fell fast asleep.

The little furball's dream became too clear to ignore.

Hope ya find it just purrfect.

FRESH sketch

FRESH

Fresh is the word for day 25 of August. I admit I was stumped on how to draw the concept of fresh. Then late at night a couple of thoughts popped into my head.

Fresh air, fresh ideas got stuck in my train of thought and I don't know how to incorporate a train into it so light bulbs, clouds and a leaf floating on air came into view, with a tiny bird to send the motion to my blocked brain.

Hope this idea feels fresh for anyone stopping by too.

Path sketch

Today's doodle #24

PATH

The word "path" lead my mind straight to Oz and that curly yellow brick road and all the familiar characters and songs that are now stuck in my head. I could've left this sketch in black and white but once Dorothy landed in Oz, really - it was all color from there.

By the way, Dorothy could've seriously used a map instead of Glynda's directions, just saying! ...and does anyone else ever wonder, did someone paint all those bricks yellow or were they gold or is that another story altogether?

PAIR

I actually finished this sketch late last night but didn't get the time to post it till today. I almost didn't cause it's far from my best and looking back now, I should've just done a "pair" of socks. There are so many things I see that are wrong but my intentions were to try do a sketch/doodleaday - lame or not...

I'm trying to get brave and just push forward on improving and loosening up my style. Just getting to sketch everyday is helpful - so please bear with me, if anyone is visiting this blog.

Home sketch

Today's doodle #22

HOME

The word "home" brought a plethora of images racing to my mind and then I looked down at my feet and the had the answer.

Each night, while watching TV, at least one of the golden girls gets comfortable "on", my feet. It's Cassidy's comfort zone and I love that she likes me enough to continue laying there even when I can't sit still.

So although Cass is still young in people years (I refuse to dog-years math!) I clearly saw her puppy years before me and instantly remembered when we brought her "home".

I showed her the doodle and she licked it (not liked) the ipad screen, in approval. Hope anyone that sees this enjoys it too and understands the meaning of home and having a place of comfort for your heart.DOODLEADAY-AUG 22: Home

COOL

Thinking of something "cool" was easy since it's August and the summer sun stares at the back of my house all day, everyday, like it's personal!

My mind went to the North Pole almost immediately. When I got there, this white polar bear was actually leaning on the North Pole like it was his private property. I think it might have been a territorial thing, I didn't bother to ask.

FACES

Today's challenge is "faces" and I'm up for the challenge. I created yet another twist on the Photo/Doodle-of the-day-August by implementing an exercise from an artist's work I admire.

I've long been a fan of the work from artist, Kelly Light. I read her blog whenever time permits and even when it doesn't. I came across Kelly's NESCBWI workshop exercise to help loosen up and just draw. I love it and plan to post something each week! Thanx for sharing Kelly and congratulations on your new title ~ "Children's Book Illustrator"!
