Dry Food Seller - Singapore 2012

1. Could you please introduce yourself?
Luca Sartoni, much easier finding me looking for “Luca” on Google than trying to catch me, considering that in the last 4 years I have visited 75 cities across 20 countries. My job takes me all over the world and I always carry my camera with me.

2. What do you like to photograph?
I take pictures of places, but most of all people that I meet on the street. I approach them keeping a low profile and when they realize about me, it’s already too late: they are part of my picture. They I surprise my subjects again saying “thank you” for the opportunity. My typical picture portraits a single person, somewhere in the world, telling a story. I shoot digital but my final result is primary Black and White.

3. Why did you choose photography as a form of communication?
I did choose photography, photography chose me. I just let that happen.

4. Who are your favorite masters of photography?
Henri Cartier-Bresson, Helmun Newton, Ansel Adams, Teymur Madjederey and Eric Kim.

5. What is the pictures you would have loved to be the author?
Even admiring a lot other people’s work and trying to get inspiration from master’s work I think there’s not a single picture I would have loved to be the author of. One of my favorite ever is Robert Oppenheimer’s portrait by Henri Cartier-Bresson.

6. What’s your advice to get a high quality picture?
To shoot great street photographs you need to look ahead. You have to be able to see a light reflection a hundred meters away and get ready to capture the moment. Then you need to realize and accept that nine hundred ninety nine pictures out of a thousand are crap. Real crap that you need to ditch. A good street photographer can save one or two pictures per year. All the rest is training in order to get the right shot.

when: may 16th, 2012 – 3pm CEST
where: Juniper Networks – InnoVAR

What is the best way to engage a closer relationship with your customers?

The answer is easier than you think; provide them value through stories about brand. And the most effective way to do it is blogging.

Through a well-designed B2B blog strategy you can unleash our company’s inner stories, turning them into compelling and powerful tools to engage your customers. You can build reputation over time, becoming a unique point of reference in the ecosystem. Though a blog you own the place, avoiding the fragmentation of our focus on too many different channels and you can increase your relevance on search engines and increase your brand awareness.

But, to be successful with blogging you need to develop the skills to create good content, build a strategy to distribute it efficiently, and create the vision to set targets to reach for.

On may 16th, 2012, I’ll have the pleasure and the honor to be hosted on the platform InnoVAR by Juniper Network with a one-hour-long webcast on the topic: “Blogging for Success”.

During the webcast I will explain how to produce the best content, easily distribute it to your targeted audiences and measure your results. I will also give away some of the best tips and tricks to be productive from day zero: straight to the juice of this topic!

You can sign-up on InnoVAR website, do it now! See you on the 16th on may!

I’ve never seen anything like the Infinity Pool before. 150m of curved edge, falling on top of Singapore Skyline. People are swimming at 191m above the street level in the longest elevated pool in the world. The pool is strictly reserved to the Marina Bay Sands Hotel guests so if you want to live this mind blowing experience, you have to reserve a room.

I had two dreams when I landed in Singapore: shooting street portraits in one of the most amazing cities in the world and swimming in the Infinity Pool at Marina Bay Sands Skypark. I’m very pleased to announce that I made both dreams come true therefore I can board my flight back to Vienna tonight without any major regret about my staying here.

(*) A very special thank you goes to the Marina Bay Sands social media and communication team that invited me to visit the skydeck. I found a very well prepared team with great skills and experience.
Little India and Arab Street

Today I went to Little India and if I thought that this city had a smaller personal space around people, I have to completely reconsider the theory. In Little India there was no personal space at all and after a while I had to get out and breath some fresh (better say open) air.

Arab Street was awesome because I had the great pleasure to talk and make friends with some of the local carpet sellers. I asked them to pose for me in front fo their shops and the results were great.

I landed yesterday in Singapore to visit my friends Lisa and Simone. I’ll be here for a week and beside my job I will spend a lot of time taking pictures in the street. Today was my first day and I went to Chinatown. In a few hours I found out three things about this awesome city:

Different perception of personal distance

Studying martial arts I learned that every person feels a personal bubble around himself. When someone enters that bubble we feel awkward and we raise up our psychological defenses. The more dense the city, the smaller the bubble. For this reason getting really close to people, while taking pictures in the street, is very easy in Singapore.

Different relationship with food

In chinatown the food is everywhere and saying hello to your live crab before his final trip to the kitchen is very common.

People are really open

As soon as I raised up my camera to take pictures of his booth, this man started to dance for me and wanted to pose with his roasted duck. I’m so excited about the amazing adventures I’m going to have during the next days in here.

Full set of pictures on Flickr. Enjoy and stay tuned!

Buona visione!

Introduzione

Mi chiamo Luca Sartoni e vivo a Vienna.

Step one: Open all doors. Learn a little about a lot. Consider as many options as possible, then add more.

Step two: Relentlessly dismiss, prune and eliminate. Choose. Ship.

Sharing e condivisione

Ogni foto viene distribuita con licenza Creative Commons, Attribution, share a-like.

Come?

Dove: Aula magna – Liceo Artistico Nervi-Severini, Via Tombesi dall’Ova 14, Ravenna, Italia

I recently managed to get a hold on a Nikon FM2 after weeks of chasing it on ebay. I found it in a shop in Vienna for a few bucks and I was so excited to try it out with my Nikkor Lenses.

Here the result with my AF Nikkor 20mm 1:2.8 D. Pretty sweet!

Getting closer

With a 20mm lens on a fullframe camera, I really need to push myself to get close to my subjects. It’s amazing to see what happens when I take this pictures in the street, smiling and saying thank you. The people actually smile back all the time and they enjoy to be in the pics. It’s really fun to get closer.

C.A: Dir. Resp. Salvatore Sangermano,

Cordiali saluti,

Luca Sartoni

Yesterday, Eric Kim, one of my favourite internationa street photographers, published a list of 102 thing he learned about street photography. The three following ones are my favorites:

21. Post-processing your images digitally should never take more than a minute

Spend more time shooting rather than working on photoshop. Save your post-processing skills for your studio work. I used to spend too much time processing my pictures. I was straightening horizons, correcting perspectives, brushing away spots and glitches. Then I visited an exhibition by Henri Cartier-Bresson and I realized that all the work I was putting on my pictures was totally worthless. The value of street photography is somewhere else. It’s out there, being at the right place, at the right time, shooting.

47. Always carry your camera with you everywhere you go. Everywhere

That’s why I decided to switch to a rangefinder (hybrid) camera and I bought myself the Fuji X100. I always have my camera with me and my Nikon D90+lens was definitely not handy enough. So it happened that I had to leave it at home sometimes. Guess what, every time that happened, a great picture was there, waiting for me. But I was not ready.

64. The best combo: one camera and one lens

Every time I went out shooting with more than one camera in the bag, I spent more time switching equipment rather than taking pictures. Same story when I took two or more lenses with me. Now I stick to one camera and one lens rule and the results are much better.

68. “Realize that most of your photographs are crap” – Charlie Kirk

Since I accepted this, I feel much better.

A few days ago I selected this picture for the 85mm.ch self portrait street self portrait contest, organized by Thomas Leuthard on flickr.

For some strange reasons I love this picture. There’s me, but not in focus, wearing my favorite jacket and using my favorite camera. The focus is behind, on the cars parked on the side of the street. There’s me, in the center, but the center of the picture is on what’s happening behind: a car passing by. The picture is naturally round-framed by the mirror but the very border is blurry and smudged as a perfect contrast with the sharpness of the U6 line of the Vienna underground and the very end of the road. The retro feeling of the black and white process and the old buildings contrast so much with the modern car behind and with my X100 camera.

All those contrasts are balancing eachother. That’s why I love this picture so much.

If you like that too, show some love and share it, as usual it’s distributed under CC-BY-SA. You can also favorite it on Flickr.
