Wilhelmina Heidenreich

The funeral of Mrs. John Austin, who died at her home in Denmark, Jan. 26th, was held Wednesday. Mrs. Austin died with the terrible disease, pneumonia, at the age of 37 years. This is certainly an afflicted family. Mr. Austin and his little son, aged four years, are both seriously ill. Only a short time since the mother and father of Mr. Austin departed this life. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to this sorely afflicted family. Besides her husband and child, the deceased is survived by her mother, Mrs. Bara Heinrichs, of Denmark, and three brothers, Louis Heinrichs, of Swissvale, Pa.; Charles Heinrichs, of Mohawk, N. Y., and George Heinrichs, of Wisconsin.

Note: The surname Heinrichs is most likely Heidenreich.
Anson Cheeseman

REV. ANSON CHEESEMAN

Death of a Well-Known—Northern New York Preacher

Rev. Anson Cheeseman, who had many old friends in Lewis county, died last Thursday at his home in Utica. Mr. Cheeseman was born in Theresa 68 years ago, being the son of Clifford Cheeseman. He was licensed as an exhorter in 1858 at Theresa, was licensed as a local preacher in 1859, and was admitted to the Northern New York conference in 1861. During his ministerial career he served the following charges: Croghan, New Bremen, Mannsville, Henderson, Sacketts Harbor, Three Mile Bay and Chaumont, Depauville, Martinsburg and Old Glendale, Hermon, Hammond, Copenhagen, Brownville, Brookfield. He served as chaplain at Danemora prison for seven years, from 1892 to 1899, being appointed to that position by Gov. Roswell P. Flower, who was an intimate friend, both being native of the same town and old school mates.

Mr. Cheeseman*s last charge was at West Frankfort and Schuyler. A year ago he was appointed by the conference to go to Sacketts Harbor, but just before leaving for his new field of labor he was severely injured by his horse stepping on him, breaking both bones of his right leg. He remained in Utica for treatment. Later acute Bright's disease developed and was the cause of his death. There were few clergymen in northern New York who enjoyed a wider acquaintance than Mr. Cheeseman and he was universally loved and respected in the various fields in which he labored. The churches under his pastorate prospered and his death will be deeply and sincerely mourned by a wide circle of friends.

The deceased is survived by his widow and two daughters, Mrs. D.V. Seeber, of Stone Mills, and Clara, who resides in Albany; also by four half brothers, Amos and Wm. Cheeseman, of Theresa; Dr. B.B.C. Cheeseman, of Watertown, and Rev. E. E. Cheeseman, of Antwerp. His only brother, James Cheeseman, died in Michigan several years ago. The funeral services were held in Utica, Saturday, and the remains were taken to Theresa for interment.

Source: Local Matters, The Journal and Republican, Lowville, Thursday, March 19, 1903, Vol. 44, No. 17, p. 5.
copyright 2010, Thomas MacEntee

For several months Mrs. Sears has been a patient sufferer in the grasp of that fell disease—consumption. During the past weeks the family and friends have been hoping against hope; but the fear which has been growing day by day has proven only too well founded, and despite the tenderest care, death has claimed for its own one whose life-work seemed but just begun. Although an intense sufferer, Mrs. Sears preserved a patient thoughtfulness for others, a cheerfulness that was remarkable, and a kindly interest in her friends, of whom she had many. Margaret Newell Cone was the youngest daughter of William H. and the late Sarah Cone, and was born at the Cone homestead in Leyden, July 27th, 1876. She was a member of the First Congregational church of this place, and also of the Young People's Society of Christian Endeavor. For the past few years she has held the position of head trimmer in a large millinery establishment in Syracuse. January 1st, 1900, she was married to Charles Sears, of this village. They removed to Syracuse and have resided there for the past three years. A few weeks before Christmas Mrs. Sears came home, hoping that the change might prove beneficial, but it was in vain. She will be greatly missed in her home, the church, and by the large circle of young people with whom she was a favorite. She had a remarkably sweet, sunny disposition and was beloved by all. The warmest sympathy of the community is with the bereaved husband, sister and father. May He who doeth all things well reveal Himself to the afflicted ones in this hour of need. The funeral services will occur Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the house, and at half-past one at the Congregational church, Rev. David L. Roberts, of Whitesboro, officiate.

Source: Port Leyden, The Journal and Republican, Port Leyden, Thursday, March 19, 1903, Vol. 44, No. 17, p. 1.
copyright 2010, Thomas MacEntee

Mrs. Kelly had been in failing health for some time, but at the time of her death was visiting at the home of her eldest daughter, Mrs. M.J. Farley. Three weeks previous to her death she was confined to her bed and grew steadily weaker. Her strength and vitality were remarkable to the last. A few days before the end, she rallied and spoke to her children near her bedside. Friday morning at 8 o'clock her soul passed to its Maker. She suffered no pain and simply drifted into the great beyond. Her prayers in this life were for a peaceful and happy death and those prayers were fully answered. Mrs. Kelly was born in Ireland and came to this country when a young girl. She was married in 1866 at Port Leyden to Martin Kelly, who died several years ago. There also survives a brother, John Conway, and a sister, Mrs. B. Gilroy, of Utica, all of whom attended the last sad rites at the family home at Port Leyden. Many were the testimonlals of her worth and usefulness in this life, paid by the old friends who gathered around her bier to pay the last respects to a true and tried friend. The funeral was held from St. Martin's church on Monday at 9 a. m., Rev. J.J. Dean officiating, internment being made at St. Martin's cemetery. Peebles, who has been confined to her house since last fall, died Saturday afternoon, aged 77 years. Her funeral was attended on Tuesday at 2 p.m., in the Methodist church, the Rev. H. E. Davis officiating. Mrs. Peebles was one of tho oldest residents of this village, and was widely known. The last years of her life have been full of anxiety and cares. She had taken burdensome duties and weighty responsibilities upon herself in the care of grand-children that were motherless, and very dear to her heart, and has toiled unceasingly in their behalf, giving her best efforts for their comforts and future good. She was broad-minded and exhibited a remarkable spirit of forbearance and kindliness. No matter how wayword or careless others might become, the true spirit of parental affection was not wanting nor withheld in their behalf. She will be missed and mourned by those who cannot forget the self-denial and sacrificing spirit manifested so patiently in their welfare. She is survived by four sons, Dean, Leon, Rollin and Durant Peebles, and one daughter, to mourn the loss of an indulgent and loving parent. The sympathy of our community is extended to the surviving family thus bereft.

Source: Martinsburg, The Journal and Republican, Lowville, Thursday, March 19, 1903, Vol. 44, No. 17, p. 1
copyright 2010, Thomas MacEntee

Stoddard

AMASA S. STODDARD

Died Suddenly Last Evening at His Home in This Village.

Had Been Ill Since Friday But Was Thought to be Improving—37 Years in the Dry Goods Business in Lowville, and Prominently Identified in the Growth and Development of the Place.

Lowville loses one of its most substantial and valuable citizens in the death of Amasa S. Stoddard, which occurred at six o'clock last evening at his home on Dayan street. He was taken ill last Friday morning with acute indigestion, but since Monday he had apparently been improving and up almost to the moment of his death his complete recovery had been anticipated. The final end came without warning and no doubt was due to heart affection. The announcement of his death was a great shock to the community, and many and sincere were the expressions of deep regret.

Mr. Stoddard was a son of Charles S. and Nancy Humphrey Stoddard, and was born in the town of Lowville, November 27, 1835. His early life was spent on a farm, but when quite a young man he entered the employ of the late A. G. Dayan in a dry goods and general store in this village. In 1867 he formed a co partnership in the dry goods business with George J. Mager, now of Cortland, and for fifteen years the firm of Stoddard & Mager was classed among the leading merchants of Lowville. In 1882 the firm sold out to the late D. Webster Lane. Six years later, 1888, Mr. Stoddard formed a co-partnership with Russell E. Bateman, under the firm name of Stoddard & Bateman, and the firm has continued in trade up to the present time, being one of the leading dry goods houses in Lowville. Thus for 37 years Mr. Stoddard has been in the dry goods business at the "Corner Store," and in all these years he has made friends throughout the county to whom the announcement of his death will be received with sorrow. Not only was Mr. Stoddard a reliable and enterprising merchant, but he always took an active interest in every movement that tended to advance the interests of Lowville and promote the welfare and happiness of the the organization that will miss wise counsels and loyal support greatest is the Baptist church. Mr. Stoddard united with this society when a young man and has for many years been one of the most liberal supporters of the church. In fact it is doubtful if any other man in Lowville gives as liberally to the support of the gospel. He has for several years not only been a member of the choir, but has personally maintained that branch of the church work, and this formed only a small part of his contributions. Not only did he contribute in a financial way, but he was always faithful in his attendance and lived a Christian life.

Mr. Stoddard was one of the organizers and largest stockholders of the Asbestos Burial Casket Company, and held the office of secretary and treasurer of the company. For several years he has been a member of the board of trustees of Lowville Academy, president of the Lowville Rural Cemetery Association, was a charter member of the Lowville Club and director of the Lowville and Beaver River Railroad Company. He served as president of the village of Lowville for five years and in many other ways has been identified with the progress, growth, development and interests of the village he loved so well. He was a man of strict integrity and pleasing personality, a loyal friend, and in every way a valuable and upright citizen whose losswill be keenly felt in the community.

January 22, 1861, Mr. Stoddard was united in marriage with Julia A. Smith, of Stokes, Oneida county, who died August 22, 1906. One son survives, Frank S. Stoddard, of Lowville; also two brothers and two sisters, Anson G. Stoddard, Morgan A. Stoddard, Mrs. C. M. Scott and Mrs. Warren L. Scott, all Lowville.

The funeral services will be held from the late residence of the deceased on Saturday afternoon at three o'clock.

Source: Amasa S.
