Curiosities: How do squirrels find the food they squirrel away come spring?

And the answer is:

Mainly by nose, said Scott Craven, emeritus professor of wildlife ecology at UW-Madison. “The consensus among scientists is that the gray squirrel uses its sense of smell, even through deep snow.”

And, thankfully, the squirrels don’t find every nut or seed that’s buried, which is why we have oak trees from coast to coast.

This guy from Alberta has me beat. It looks like his $17 million was tied up for about 10 months. I think he should receive the lost interest. I remember a story in England where someone tried to make a claim against a lottery winner and it was tied up in the court system for years. When the ruling was made by a judge that there was no wrong-doing, the person making the claim was on the hook for over 300,000+ pounds (approx. $600,000+ CDN) and was crying to the media that they were going to lose their house to pay the court costs.  

When you win REAL BIG, often people come out of the woodwork making a claim thinking they have nothing to lose, only to gain. They hope they will be paid off.

I recall another story involving some A&W workers from Mission, BC who won over $14 million on Lotto 649. The employees put in $2 each for a ticket, and they’d purchased 9 tickets for a total of $18. After the news of their win, another six people came forward claiming to be in the group too. It became a lengthy legal battle.

Hats off to Seguro Ndabene of Airdrie, Alberta for not giving in and paying off the scammer.

Lotto Max has reached the $50 Million dollar mark and currently has $10 Maxmillions. If the jackpot is not won, all funds will be put into the Maxmillions. We estimate if the jackpot is not won, the Maxmillions will jump to $30 to $40 million for next week.

If the $50 million is won, the Maxmillions roll over to the regular jackpot pot and the Maxmillions disappear until the jackpot is at the $50 million mark again.

Regular office lottery pools will be popping up all over Canada.

I have talked to one local lottery retailer who told me the most they have paid out to any single winner on this lottery so far was $20.

People are playing this lotttery, but winners are hard to find.

Many Super 7 players ($2 tickets) were upset with this new lottery costing $5 a ticket and said they will not be playing.  Lotto 649 lost players when they jumped to $2 a ticket from $1.  But with an advertised JACKPOT of $50 Million people will likely get a ticket, costing 2.5 times the cost of a Super 7.

Time will tell.
