500 Rads - New J.J. Abrams Movie

With their now expected levels of secrecy and sneakiness, it seems that JJ Abrams and Bad Robot are already deep into bringing a mysterious movie called 500 Rads to the screen. At least that’s if it will be called 500 Rads and this isn’t just some kind of hazy-fantazy codename.

The leaked information so far pegs the film at a sweet little $25 million budget and alleges that production will take place in Europe. The story was apparently formulated by Abrams who handed it off to Jeff Pinkner to write the screenplay, and now it seems that some other scribes from the Bad Robot mafia will be taking a pass too while Pinker gets busy at the Fringe again.

Seeing as their source has told them to expect 500 Rads to fall in the vein of both Cloverfield and 28 Days Later, and because they’ve researched enough to find out that Rads refers to radiation, Pajiba are speculating that this might be a zombie picture of some kind. I’m just thinking there’s video cameras involved.

My research into radiation has yielded little more of any definite use, though I can tell you that 500 Rads is the absorbed dose that will turn a guy sterile - a woman would need to be hit by 600 Rads - so there’s an off chance that Abrams and co. are playing with fertility sci-fi, ala Children of Men, ZPG and so on. Having said that, other sources I surfed to in my research told me that 500 Rads would be enough to kill you… well, I guess the dead are pretty sterile. I await the actual factuals from our well informed readership in the comments section below.

Seeing as there’s no director attached as yet, this could be a project Abrams himself decides to take ownership of. On the other hand, it probably won’t be and he’ll pull in somebody else.

Damon Lindelof - NYU Alumni Interview

In the late 1970s, in the days before VCRs gained ubiquity, Damon Lindelof’s parents bought him some 16-mm prints of scenes from Star Wars because they were sick of taking their son to rewatch the film. He played the prints so much that they soon broke. Lindelof (TSOA ’95) admits that he probably had an “unhealthy obsession” with the space adventure, but it was also his first experience with the escapist power of mythology. “It made me want to be a storyteller,” he recalls.

So fans of ABC’s Lost might credit George Lucas, in part, for inspiring one of the most confounding, dizzying, and literary-infused shows ever to grace prime-time television. As co-creator, head writer, and executive producer, Lindelof will steer the series through its sixth and final season beginning in January 2010. The show, which has racked up Emmys, Golden Globes, and other awards, trails a group of plane-crash survivors on a mysterious tropical island who navigate a revolving door of obstacles—from global power struggles to personal demons and unwillful time travel. The characters are developed through nonlinear flashbacks that meticulously connect to the overall mystery.

Though Lindelof now enjoys deity-like status among many sci-fi fans—he also produced the recent movie blockbuster Star Trek—the road to fantasy guru was paved through some pretty mainstream storytelling; he previously wrote for the Don Johnson vehicle Nash Bridges, MTV’s Undressed, and the crime drama Crossing Jordan. But penning and producing the sequel to Star Trek (due out in 2011), along with developing a film based on Stephen King’s fantasy Western series The Dark Tower, should keep him in the myth-making business for some time.

NYU Alumni Magazine recently spoke to Lindelof about life at the helm of a network hit, confusion as a motif, and what comes next.

You were brought in by J.J. Abrams (Felicity, Alias, Fringe) to help develop the Lost pilot. What was it like dreaming up the show with him?

We met on a Monday, talked for two hours, and started to get really excited about it. That Friday afternoon we had written a 23-page outline, and on Saturday morning ABC picked it up.

So there was immediate chemistry.

I was like, “I can’t believe I’m in a room with J.J. Abrams,” and he was just treating me like I was his buddy. Within a week we were writing together, meeting at Starbucks, and hanging out. The mystical side of me says we must have known each other in a former life, but I think sometimes you just meet people and immediately click in a way where it’s like, “Oh…you.”

You sprinkle each show with references to literature, philosophy, and even ancient cultures. Do you ever think you’re giving the audience too many dots to connect?

I feel like for the audience member who wants to ski the black diamond, that run is available to them, but there’s also a bunny slope. And hopefully the episode makes sense. Here’s the story [to the Season 5 finale]: This guy’s trying to blow up a hydrogen bomb; this guy’s trying to stop him. But if you want the more advanced version of the show, there’s all these clues and nuggets, like Flannery O’Connor’s Everything That Rises Must Converge. Those things are there for the superfan.

So there’s a conscious effort to make Lost fans do some deep thinking, if they choose?

The show is not just called Lost because the island is lost or the people are lost in their lives. We want the audience to always feel a little lost, too, a little disoriented. As opposed to a cop show where you know the objective is to get the bad guy, or a hospital show where the objective is to save the patient, you don’t know what the objective is on Lost. Our characters don’t even know; they’re trying to figure it out every week. Next [season] will be a slightly different experience.

Speaking of which, fans and TV writers are constantly speculating about how it will all end this spring. Any secrets you might want to leak to your fellow NYU alums?

[Laughs] Mum’s the word.

I had a feeling you’d say that. So you’re about to wrap up this monumental TV series, you’ve just produced Star Trek…what’s left on your creative wish list?

It’s all gravy at this point. In my heart and in my soul I am still a fanboy myself, and the only standard I ever hold any project I’m working on to is: If I were 11 years old, would I be into this?

Elizabeth Mitchell is carving out some time to shoot a movie too: She’ll star in the indie ensemble drama Answers to Nothing, EW.com has confirmed. In the film, which is set against the backdrop of a child abduction chase and focuses on lost Angelenos in search of redemption, Mitchell is a woman consumed by her desire to have a baby with her husband (Dane Cook). “Playing a hormonal woman whose marriage is shaky and who has lost her way through her ultimate obsession—I love stuff like that. That’s where I live,” she tells EW.com, adding: “The movie is a little bit like Magnolia where you get this glimpse into people’s lives and it may not be exactly what you want to see, but it is accurate.” Currently shooting in Los Angeles, Answers to Nothing also stars Julie Benz, Barbara Hershey, Zach Gilford, Kali Hawk, Eric Palladino, Mark Kelly, Miranda Bailey, and singer Aja Volkman. Matthew Leutwyler (Dead & Breakfast) is directing and co-writing the film, which is being produced by Ambush Entertainment (The Squid and the Whale).

Lost's Naveen Andrews to Guest on Law & Order: SVU

Lost star Naveen Andrews has signed on to film a guest spot on an episode of Law & Order: SVU, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

The details of his role are being kept under wraps for now, but the episode starts filming in the next week or so in New York.

Andrews, 40, plays Sayid Jarrah on ABC's Lost, which is still shooting its final season in Hawaii. (A source tells us they're on Episode 6 of 18.)

Let's not jump to any conclusions though. "As with previous seasons, not all cast members are in every episode," says a studio rep. It's entirely possible that Andrews will finish his SVU gig and return to Hawaii to shoot more Lost. But the timing does at least raise the question: Is Andrews, and thus Sayid, done for the season?

Before Lost, Andrews was best known for playing a sensitive explosives expert who wooed Juliette Binoche in Anthony Minghella's The English Patient.

Andrews' SVU episode will air in January 2010, right around the time that Lost's sixth and final season premieres.

Jeff Fahey, who plays helicopter pilot Frank Lapidus on ABC's hit show, "LOST," spent two days this week meeting politicians and journalists in order to bring attention to the issue of refugee warehousing and the refugee situations in Algeria and Thailand. Fahey, whose work on this issue is in concert with the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, recently met with escaped refugees from camps near Tindouf, Algeria.

POLITICO sat down with Fahey Wednesday to talk about these issues and, of course, whether members of Congress are die hard "LOST" fans.

Elizabeth Mitchell, former "Lost" fertility doctor Juliet, says that when she found out she was being killed off on the ABC drama, she and co-star Evangeline Lilly went on a bender.

"I cried for a couple days," Mitchell says in Entertainment Weekly's latest issue, on stands tomorrow. "Evangeline and my sister came over, and we drank until we fell asleep on the couch, which was not good, because none of us are big drinkers. We woke up and said, 'Let's do ice cream next time, okay?'"

Up next for Mitchell is ABC's "V," yet another sci-fi thriller - which is just fine with the actress, who labels herself a "dork and a nerd."

"They know I'm one of them. Completely," said Mitchell. "Like a wolf in sheep's clothing, I'm a sci-fi fan - with a soccer mom on the outside."

Clancy Brown Might be Playing Lobo

Looking at the more recent successful films, it's becoming clear that star power is no longer a guaranteed box office draw for audiences. Unknown actors and actresses are garnering as much attention as their A-List counterparts. It looks like the creative team behind the upcoming Guy Ritchie adaptation of DC Comics' Lobo is paying attention to this trend as IGN says a source close to production told them that actor Clancy Brown might be the man to step into Lobo's shoes. Apparently with the amount of special effects needed to create the character, there isn't too much concern in bringing in a high profile name to lead this project.

"Ultimately regardless of whether you do it all CG or its a guy in a suit, with CG, you'll still end up doing a lot of CG animation. So do you need a celebrity? Do you need a name or do you just get someone who is good and who's gonna nail it?"

Evangeline Lilly: I'm a loner

Evangeline Lilly has revealed she struggles in relationships - as she enjoys being alone.

The 30-year-old actress - who plays Kate in hit drama Lost - did date her co-star Dominic Monaghan but revealed she can't imagine herself getting married.

Evangeline said: "It's a real struggle for me - I am very independent and I do very well on my own."

She added: "I don't get lonely, really. I like to be alone. Some people have to focus to make themselves spend time on their own, but I'm okay with that. I'm the opposite. I'm always alone and I love it."

But Evangeline revealed: "It's been my goal to socialise more this year because I am such a geek and I thought I should try to do a bit better with my socialising skills. I'm the ultimate geek when it comes to socialising."

Kate is adoptive mother to Aaron in season five of Lost - which is out now on DVD - and Evangeline revealed she has thought about adopting herself.

She said: "For a very long time, I have had intentions to adopt. We have a huge population problem on earth. I have always wanted to have a child of my own and I will always want to go through the gift that women have been given to experience that, so I hope to be a mother at some point. I think I can allow myself one child - and from then on, I think I would have to adopt."

Henry Ian Cusick Settles Harassment Case

Ay, brother -- Henry Ian Cusick is off the hook.

Cusick -- who plays Desmond Hume on "Lost" -- has settled a sexual harassment lawsuit with a former production staffer who sued him back in April for allegedly grabbing and touching her inappropriately.

The woman sued Cusick, ABC and a Hawaiian production company. Her lawyer tells us she has settled with all the defendants and the terms are confidential.

I’ve found a possible media mention in yesterday’s Colbert Report. After the first commercial break there was a sequence where they showed a job application letter. The name on it was “Jim LeFleur” (not LaFleur) from Portland. It’s nothing big, but I thought I’ll give you a heads up. I made a quick screenshot of the application letter mentioned and I now noticed some of the Lost numbers under the name.

J.J. Abrams Says He Would Like To Return to the 'Superman' Franchise

The last time J.J. Abrams had the Man of Steel on his mind, things didn't exactly work out as planned, but given his resilient career in television and film since 2002, the creator is in a better position than ever to make a hypothetical return to the property. However, despite the support of high-profile fans such as filmmaker Kevin Smith and many in the fan community, at this point, nothing is officially moving forward with Abrams' version of Superman.

"No one has talked to me about it," Abrams told MTV News. "Obviously I’m sure Warner Brothers has a plan for what they want to do."

"Writing that script was a long process," he explained. "It was a very passionate character for me. As a kid growing up it meant a lot to me. It would be wonderful and fun to see that brought back. I don’t know what Warners is thinking or what their plan is. It would be a blast."

Though the "Lost" co-creator and "Star Trek" director's first crack at scripting the Last Son of Krypton received mixed reviews from fans, it still has its supporters in Hollywood. Brendan Fraser, who actually suited up for a screen test for what would have been a Brett Ratner-directed film, has only praised what would have been. Abrams himself explained that while that particular draft didn't see the light of day, there's still a version of the script he'd enjoy he could envision being produced.

"That version of the movie—the one that was reviewed and vilified—was actually not the latest draft we had at the time and we worked on it well after that. I do think there’s a version of that movie that could be really fun to see," said Abrams. "You never really know. Everything happens for a reason."

'I'll tune in for Lost finale'

Dominic Monaghan has revealed that he will "definitely be tuning in" for the final season of Lost.

The 32-year-old actor, who played Charlie Pace on the ABC cult series, also said that he knows a few details on how the series ends.

"I know little bits and pieces about the final season, but I'm still going to watch it," he said. "It's event television, so I'll definitely be tuning in."

Asked about the comparisons between Lost and his new series FlashForward, Monaghan claimed that there are "distinct differences" between the shows.

"Well, there are obvious similarities because both Lost and FlashForward include a large ensemble cast, a very ambitious storyline and a very easy way to sell the show internationally because it's based on an event that happens worldwide," he said.

"Both include mystery, drama and suspense - but at the same time, I think there are distinct differences. I think FlashForward is a show that is probably not as sophisticated in that deeply-rich mythology as Lost is.

"However, I would not like to call FlashForward ‘simplistic’ in any way."

Lost returns January 2010 for its final season. FlashForward currently airs Thursdays at 8pm on ABC in the US and Mondays at 9pm on Five in the UK.

Where Will Lost End Up?

Question: I have been thoroughly enjoying 3/4 of ABC's Wednesday night comedy block (which, so far, is funnier and more accessible than the 3/4s of NBC's Thursday night comedy block I watch). My question is this: Where is Lost going to go? For the majority of its run, Lost has been on Wednesdays at 9/8c (except for its freshman year when it aired at 8/7c—which still shocks me—and the year of the writers' strike when it aired on Thursdays). I can't imagine ABC pulling its newly established (and relatively successful) comedy in favor of Lost, so in all likelihood, the final season of Lost will be airing in a time slot it has never aired previously. Where do you think it will go?—Erin

Matt Roush: Clearly, scheduling the final season of Lost will be no laughing matter. But I agree that it’s not in ABC’s best interests to jettison its new Wednesday comedy block just as it’s building up some steam, critically and some weeks in the ratings. (It’s a tough night, and ABC will need to be patient to see long-term growth; getting rid of Hank would be a good first step.) ABC has not yet announced just how it will schedule Lost in its final season, but wherever it airs, its fans will find it and follow it to the end. This final season isn’t going to be about ratings necessarily; Lost isn’t likely to grow in its final season, although many who’ve fallen away may tune in toward the end just to see how it wraps up. Which is why I wouldn’t be surprised if ABC puts it in one of the open 10/9c slots where shows currently are performing poorly: Tuesdays or, more likely, Wednesdays. This gets it out of the way of the American Idol juggernaut, and while I’d prefer it to air in a 9/8c time period as it has done the last few seasons, I don’t see an opening there, especially on Wednesdays, where the acclaimed Modern Family serves as the anchor for the comedy block. In the big picture, it’s more important for ABC to continue nurturing its terrific new comedies for the long haul than to worry too much about protecting Lost in its final stretch. Wherever it airs, we’ll be there.

“Lost” co-creator Damon Lindelof, “Freaks and Geeks” creator Paul Feig and late-night comedy writer Chuck Sklar met Saturday afternoon in the ballroom of the Driskill Hotel to discuss how pilot scripts written on speculation become successful prime-time television shows.

It turns out the panel’s premise was kind of faulty: While Sklar has sold three pilot scripts, none was ever produced; as Feig pointed out, “freaks and Geeks,” while a cult favorite, could hardly be classified as successful, having been cancelled after it’s freshman season; and “Lost?” Lindelof called it “an unmitigated disaster.”

Here are some highlights of the discussion:

On “Lost”: “Lost” was an unmitigated disaster. I am the worst person to be on this panel,” Lindelof said. Outgoing ABC Entertainment Group President Lloyd Braun decided to make the most expensive pilot ever as a (expletive) you.” The network had a pilot script called “Nowhere,” that was basically pretty, shirtless people romping around on a beach, Lindelof said. ABC liked the idea of a plane-crash, island show, but wanted it re-written. “Our idea was that it would be a mystery show. Heavy serialized and supernatural.” He says the show wasn’t his and co-creator Carlton Cuse’s idea, but they tried to make it their best. “They tested it and it tested well; they picked it up,” he said.

“As we were writing the pilot, the network wanted us to create the show’s ‘bible’, but until you’re actually doing it you don’t know what’s going to work and not work,” he added. “That’s like asking somebody on the morning of their wedding day, ‘How are you going to raise your kids?’ One of these days we’ll let the public see this ‘bible’ and they can see how quickly we deviated from it.”

Damon Lindelof Is Still "Lost"

Damon Lindelof began his Hollywood career reviewing scripts for Paramount, Fox and Alan Ladd studios. From there, he moved on to writing, most notably on TV shows, including "Nash Bridges" and the Tim Kring helmed "Crossing Jordan." Lindelof soon hit the big time as co-creator and executive producer of the hit ABC TV Show "Lost," where he cemented his relationship with J.J. Abrams, who he has continued to work with, most recently in the revitalization of the "Star Trek" franchise which Lindelof co-produced.

In 2005, he landed his first comic book gig with "Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk," where Lindelof chronicled the action-packed meeting of the two titular characters. The series was unfortunately met with delays starting with issue three, which was originally solicited for April of 2006 but did not see publication till over three years later. The mini-series finally wrapped in May of this year, and was released in October in hardcover form. Now, with Lindelof's first comic book work completed and the hit show "Lost" heading into it's final season, CBR News caught up with Lindelof at his first comic book signing at Earth-2 to talk TV and comics.

Over three and a half years after the first issue debuted on the stands, Lindelof finally gets to hold the collected trade in his hands. "I felt like it would never happen, but it's really exciting that the day is here," he said. "For all the people that said they would wait for the trade, now they have the opportunity to make good on that promise! But I don't blame them if they don't, 'cause it was a long time in the making."

Lindelof's work on "Lost" is also coming to a close with the sixth and final season airing in just four months. "People keep saying, 'Wow, it must be really sad for you guys,' but I feel that excitement is the prevailing emotion," he explained. "We've written over a hundred and ten hours of 'Lost,' now, and it's been basically the same sort of family doing the show since the beginning, and I think we are all looking forwards to ending it. Every story has a beginning, middle and end, and as sad as it is sometimes to end a story, it's also incredibly liberating and exciting. Every scene that we write is one scene closer to the inevitable, so it feels pretty good. I don't know if anyone is going to like it, but at least we are delivering on our promise to answer some stuff."

Shifting to comics while remaining on the subject of emotions, and with "Blackest Night" in full swing, Lindelof gave his choices on which of the Losties would inherit each color ring. "Fear - the greatest character for that [emotion] would be Hurley," Lindelof said. "For willpower, Locke, for hope, Jack, for avarice, Sawyer, for rage... Wow, so many on that one! I'll say Mr. Eko. For love, Juliet, for compassion, Kate and for death - no comment." When questioned further if mayhaps Charlie, played by Dominic Monaghan, might exemplify death, as his character died in Season Three, Lindelof quipped "He's only relatively dead; 'mostly dead,' as they would say in 'The Princess Bride.'"

While Damon is looking forward to delivering the answers of many of the questions that have come up on "Lost," he doesn't plan on answering them all. "I don't think it would be 'Lost' if we answered every question to every viewer's satisfaction," Lindelof said. "I mean, there are some people who are still asking us 'What's the story with Kate's toy plane?' and there is nothing more to say about it; we've definitively answered that question to the best of our ability on the show, so you won't be hearing anymore about the toy plane. That being said, there are other sort of meta questions, like, what do the numbers mean, that we will be addressing more directly in the final season. But some people will feel like, 'Wow, they answered more than I thought they ever would about that question,' and some people will say 'What a hose job, I am so unsatisfied!' Our goal is to land in the middle of the 'hose jobers' and the 'too much informationers,' because you can't make everybody happy."

Some answers that Lindelof is willing to give fans now are to questions about who may or may not be appearing in the final season. "Most of the questions that we get asked are 'Is so-and-so coming back?' or 'Are we going to see more of so-and-so?' and I feel like that if I know the answer to that question, the fans sort of deserve a 'Yes, that is something you should be looking forward to,' or 'Don't get your hopes up for that because it's not going to happen.' I don't want you to tune in waiting for the Great American Libby story, because it's not coming."

Years back, Lindelof even revealed a major plot point for Season Two to a lucky fan. Unfortunately, however, she didn't believe him. "We were [doing a] signing, and the ["Lost"] Season One DVDs had just come out," Lindelof recalled. "It was early September, before Season Two started, and this woman asked 'What's in the hatch?' And I said, 'I'll write it in your DVD,' and I wrote down 'There is a guy in there pushing a button every 108 minutes or the world will end.' And she looked at it, and she went 'pffft,' like she thought I was kidding. But sometimes when you tell the truth, it seems like it's a lie."

Several TV shows, like "Jericho," "Heroes," and "Chuck" have been developed as comic books, and with Lindelof's ties to the comic book world, one would think that "Lost" would be a natural fit for a similar treatment. When asked about the possibility of a "Lost" comic, Lindelof replied, "We've been very guarded about doing ancillary materials, because it's primarily a mystery show. We feel that, if we did comic books, we want to make sure they tied in [and] they were canon, but at the same time, it has to be a cool enough story that warrants it being told, so it's not just filler. But if it becomes integral to the story, then you're alienating the actual people who watch the show because they feel like they are missing something. So I feel that maybe comic books for 'Lost' will make a lot more sense once the series is done, to possibly fill in some blanks if we choose to go that road. But we've been really averse to the idea, because we couldn't creatively control it as we were going along. [With] Chuck, he can go on missions or adventures that are not integral to the story of 'Chuck,' and 'Heroes' [is the] same thing. They can introduce ancillary heroes who are not essential to the central mythology of the show, but for 'Lost,' there is only one mythology, so we can't basically say. Lindelof has long been associated with the film adaptation of Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series alongside J.J. Abrams, a project he has since decided that he won't do as not to screw up a property he truly loves. Though, with Marvel doing the "Dark Tower" comic books, a Lindelof penned comic book mini-series might be in his future. "I would love to do a 'Dark Tower' story in the Marvel world, when the dust settles. I actually think that [writers] Robin [Furth] and Peter [David] have been doing an awesome job with all that stuff, and I'm totally into the 'Dark Tower' comic book. I think it's cool."

Evangeline Lilly: 'Lost is so beyond me'

Evangeline Lilly has said that she would never be able to pen a show like Lost.

The actress, who has starred as the show's Kate Austen since the start of the series, told Stylist that she will pursue writing after the end of Lost's sixth and final season.

Lilly said: "Writing is my first passion. I can't stop it. I write all the time so I want to either publish something I have written or sell a film script."

When asked if she will write something like Lost, she replied: "Never in a million years! I am so not a sci-fi nut or buff in any way and this show is so beyond me, I couldn't fathom a show like this.

"But I'll write anything. If one day a TV series comes into my head and that is what I want to write, I'll write it. It just depends what story is in my brain at the time."

Earlier this year, Lilly's agent denied reports that the actress would leave the show before its conclusion next year.
