New wind turbines have been provided at Beechwood Youth and Community Centre.

They were unveiled by Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon with Year 8 pupils from Trinity Catholic College.

The two Ampair wind turbines have been fitted to the community centre's sports hall and are clearly visible from Marton Road.

The turbines have a combined output of 1.2KwH - enough electricity to power two desktop computers or an energy-efficient washing machine.

To help centre staff understand how much power the turbines are producing, a hand-held monitor has been supplied to show the electricity they produce and how much money that will save on bills.

During the visit the pupils were shown how a wind turbine generates electricity and found out about other possible sources of renewable energy.

Trinity Catholic College is one of five schools in Middlesbrough taking part in the regional Climate Change Lead Schools programme which seeks to educate young people on the science and implications of climate change.

Middlesbrough Council was awarded Beacon Council status in 2008 for Tackling Climate Change, making it one of only six councils to receive the award in the country.

Mr Mallon said: "Renewable energy schemes such as wind turbines and solar panels play a key role in reducing our dependence on fossil fuels such as coal and oil which contribute to climate change.

"Middlesbrough is working towards a One Planet Living future and clean, green electricity plays a key part in sustainable living.

"I'm pleased to see community centres like Beechwood leading the way," he said.

RESPECT OUR ROAD WORKERS

Roadworks are a place of work, and the people there deserve just as much respect as you would expect at work. When you are approaching roadworks:
•	Keep within the speed limit - it is there for your safety
•	Keep a safe distance - there could be queues in front
•	Get into the correct lane in good time - don't keep switching
•	Observe all signs - they are there to help you
•	Be alert for works' traffic leaving or entering the roadworks
•	Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks

A66 ROADWORKS

NORTH MIDDLESBROUGH ACCESSIBILITY SCHEME

Although resurfacing works of the main carriageway of the A66 between Newport Interchange and the A19 are now complete, works are still in place to improve the drainage system on the westbound carriageway across Newport Interchange. Two lanes should continue to be maintained throughout the duration of this work, which are expected to be complete by 13/11/09.

The new traffic signals on Newport Roundabout are now operational, improving safety for motorists and pedestrians alike. All road users are asked to take care as they get used to the new layout and lane designation at this junction.

The new link road is expected to be open on 25/11/09.

Further information is available on www.northmiddlesbroughaccessibility.com

A66 MAINTENANCE WORKS

Lane closures are necessary each Sunday at various locations on the A66 for detailed inspection works, gully cleaning, and repairs to street lighting etc.

Maintenance works involving near-side lane closures are programmed on Sunday 15/11/09 on the westbound main carriageway from Hartington Interchange entry slip to the A19 Interchange, also Hartington entry slip and Cannon park exit and entry slips.

Full carriageway reconstruction and footpath renewal works commenced on The Avenue and Orchard Road (see plan) on 20th July 2009. The works are being carried out in five phases in order to minimise disruption to residents who are directly affected, with phases 4 and 5 combined in order to achieve an early finish. Works commenced on Phases 4 and 5 on 15th October 2009, and the programmed completion date for the full scheme is 28th November 2009.

During each phase of work the carriageway will be closed to all traffic, with signed diversion routes in place. As with all construction works some disruption is inevitable, although every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum.

As part of the scheme, the opportunity is being taken to introduce a mini-roundabout at the junction of The Avenue and Orchard Road in order to address the poor accident record at this location. The new roundabout will become operational when both roads reopen to traffic at the end of November.

A NATIONAL charity has spoken of the frustration Alzheimer's sufferers and their families feel while thorough testing is carried out on new drugs.

Last week, the Evening Gazette told how the family of Carol Henman, who was just 51 when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, had written to the Prime Minister Gordon Brown in a bid to have a drug called Rember made available to sufferers more quickly, Carol pictured below with her daughter Helen Smurthwaite.

The drug has been reported as a promising development in the fight against Alzheimer's, but will not be available until 2013 when phase three trials are complete.

Carol's family, including her husband David, 58, and daughter Helen Smurthwaite, 30, feel angry and frustrated such a groundbreaking treatment is taking so long to get to people who may have little time left.

But Clive Ballard, director of Research for the Alzheimer's Society, said: "Research into new drug treatments is ongoing, but each new form of medication has to be rigorously tested to ensure it's safety.

"Clinical trials usually take several years to complete, which is frustrating for people with dementia and their carers who are looking for new treatments."

The Alzheimer's Society campaigns for increased funding into research which Mr Ballard states is "desperately under-funded" despite the growing numbers of people developing dementia.

Helen, of Fremantle Crescent Middlesbrough, believes that given the choice, sufferers like her mum, Carol, 57, would prefer to take Rember before clinical trials are complete and would be willing to sign a disclaimer acknowledging they may suffer unknown side effects.

She said: "I know they are saying they really need to do the tests before they make the drugs available but they've already done two clinical trials where it's been found to work.

"Why don't they make it available to members of the public who are willing to sign a disclaimer where to say they are not able to sue anyone if anything happens?"

As reported, Claude Wischik, professor of old age psychiatry at Aberdeen University and chairman of TauRx Therapuetics, the company developing the drug, said that while results from trials of Rember had so far been encouraging, they are "not facts" and are "not proven" until phase three trials are complete.

A COMMUNITY garden in Middlesbrough is in need of a bit of a sprucing up this winter.

And parishioners at St Agnes Church in Easterside are banking on YOUR support to help inject some colour into their garden.

This year they have signed up for the Gazette's Wish campaign and are busy collecting tokens to ensure a share of the £30,000 cash pot.

The Rev Margery Grange explained: "We need to get some more colour in there.
"We are looking for more shrubs. We have some that have been given in memory of loved ones but we would like some more which would really improve it."

The garden, created with support from Middlesbrough Environment, was opened last year.

Green-fingered members of Beaver and Cub groups have been busy planting daffodils and helping out with the work.

Metal benches, flower tubs and trellis have also been installed, along with trees, shrubs and bulbs.

The church hopes that more flowers will result in a bright show of colour in time for summer next year.

It is also hoped that any money raised through the Wish campaign can help them to open the grounds for longer - and ensure more people can enjoy its beauty.

"The idea is that we can open it during the day," said Margery. "It's somewhere people can come and sit. It's nice and relaxing.

"With the high cost of maintaining the church building, St Agnes PCC needs the help of the community to make this wish come true."

Every group registered on our Wish List is guaranteed a share of the money. The amount will depend on the support they receive from readers in the form of tokens. The £30,000 cash pot will be divided by the number of tokens collected - the more tokens, the bigger your slice of cash.

To support St Agnes, leave your tokens at Easterside Library or send them to Margery Grange at 1 Broughton Avenue, Easterside, Middlesbrough.

Emma Beach and Satya Darbar are instructors at the Dance Factory North East on Saltersgill Avenue, Middlesbrough, and teach dozens of youngsters cool moves.

They were nominated by 10-year-old Britney Waugh, in the Children and Young People's Champion category sponsored by Stockton Council.

Britney attends the centre four times a week for dance lessons.

"Emma and Satya are really good teachers, they are my favourite teachers. They do lots of classes all through the week and work really hard.

"They also arrange it so we do performances at theatres - for our last one we danced to Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson at Middlesbrough Theatre," said Britney of Keith Road, Middlesbrough.

Her mum Andrea said: "Emma and Satya are fantastic - Britney loves going to dance, it's something really fun and healthy.

"It also keeps them off the streets and is something safe," said the hairdresser, 31.

The project receives no external funding, and relies on contributions from parents to keep going. Lessons cost just £1.50, making access to the fun an healthy lessons within the financial reach of most families.

Emma, 23, and 32-year-old Satya were delighted when they learned they were in the running for one of our awards.

Emma said: "I'm overwhelmed actually, it's lovely that one of the children has done this for us.

"We've been going four years and have got about 60 youngsters on the books now, and are always open to new members."

The Anthony Nolan Trust is holding a recruitment clinic in Middlesbrough to find volunteers with tissue types that could match leukaemia sufferers.

Christine Stevens, pictured, is urging people to visit the clinic at Trinity Catholic College, the former Newlands School, on Saltersgill Avenue between 4pm and 7pm.

Her daughter Adele Wardingham was seven months pregnant when she was diagnosed with non- Hodgkin's lymphoma, which has spread to her breasts, stomach and bones. The decision was taken to deliver her baby Theo ten weeks early in March.

Adele, 22, is still very ill and is in the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle for a course of chemotherapy and to receive new bone marrow.

Christine said it was not a perfect match but it was the best they could do and added if it did not work she can have another try.

She said 200 people need to attend today's event to make it a good night.

Acklam Under 17's 62 points v Hartlepool Rovers 0 points

Acklam dominated this league game from the start in some very poor weather conditions. Ben Dickenson at fly-half scored three tries and converted six out of the ten tries that Acklam scored. Matthew Stockwell scored three tries, Liam McIvor scored two tries, Dan Jones and Scott Tyreman scored one each. Acklam were far too strong for Rovers and the game was stopped short.

Acklam Under 16's 60 points v Hartlepool 0 points

Acklam was too strong for the Hartlepool team and the game was stopped short.
Next week Acklam play at home in the second round of the Yorkshire Cup against Beverley, come along and support the team.

Acklam Under 15's 45 points v Thirsk 0 points

Thirsk had beaten M'bro. and Ilkley this season with the team that turned out against Acklam this morning according to their coach. However, there was only going to be one winner to-day as Acklam dominated from the start to finish in all aspects of the game.
Ricky Scott scored two tries and converted five of the seven tries scored; one conversion was from the touch in awful weather conditions.
Both centres rounded off fine games with Josh Abraham and Josh Cook both scoring a brace of tries.
Welcome return for Danny Moss after two weeks holiday in the sun. Peter Martin had to prop to-day and he scrummaged very well.
Lewis Catterick was voted man of the match by the referee for his dynamic display in which he scored one try.
Good display in poor conditions.

Acklam Under 14's

No game.

Acklam Under 13's

North Yorkshire trials at York this morning were cancelled.

SAFETY FIRST, dudes!

That's the message to skaters this weekend as they celebrate the reopening of a popular Middlesbrough skate park.

The Prissick Plaza park, on Marton Road, has been closed for essential repair work on some of its concrete surfaces.

It was due to reopen today, with new safety regulations coming into force to allow skateboarders and BMX riders to practise their tricks while doing their level best to avoid a painful spill.

The new rules include:

A minimum age of eight years. Younger children must be closely supervised by a parent or guardian.

No one below the age of 10 will be permitted to use the bowl area of the park.

All those entering the site must have either an annual membership or a day pass.

Helmets to be worn at all times.

Users will be strongly advised to wear other safety equipment such as leg and elbow protection - also available from Plaza staff.

Day passes are £3, but £10 buys an annual membership to the park which hosted 80,000 visitors last year.

Councillor Paul Thompson, Middlesbrough Council's Executive Member for Streetscene Services, said: "We had hoped to have the routine repairs to the concrete completed in time for the start of the busy half-term break, but unfortunately that wasn't possible.

"However, the Plaza is back open for business today and I have no doubt it will be as popular as ever, with youngsters not just from Middlesbrough but from across the area."

For more information about the Prissick Plaza go to www.middlesbrough.gov.uk

The new traffic signals on Newport Roundabout are now operational, improving safety for motorists and pedestrians alike. All road users are asked to take care as they get used to the new layout and lane designation at this junction.
Further information is available on www.northmiddlesbroughaccessibility.com

THREE people are being hunted by police after confusing cash change scams at two Middlesbrough shops.

The scams - where customers confuse cashiers into handing over too much money - took place at Sainsbury's stores.

The first occurred on at Sainsbury's on Linthorpe Road on the evening of Monday, October 5, when a man and woman bought a can of coke.

From that simple purchase, a confusing chain of events followed, involving the woman asking the cashier to change £200 into £10 notes, then £20 notes, then 20 pences.

During the complex process, the man and woman take advantage of the confusion to pocket some of the cash. When the duo left, the till was found to be £140 short.

Police believe the cash was taken then during that transaction process, because the till had been checked just before the couple entered the store and not long after they had left.

In another incident, at Sainsbury's in Easterside, Middlesbrough, on Thursday, July 30, a man entered the store and carried out a similar scam.

The man, described as white, about 6ft tall and of a chubby/stocky build with a Geordie accent, selected a few items of low value and paid for them using a £50 note.

He then confused staff into changing other money into notes, during which he managed to pocket £30.

He then offered to pay for the low value items with coins - getting back the £50, but not the extra £30 he had already pocketed.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC John Bonner or PC Carla Shedon at Coulby Newham Police Office on 01642 303419 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
