Young Adults Ice Skating - Patinando no Gelo com os Jovens

Decidimos também fazer algo diferente neste final de ano com os jovens da igreja e fomos fazer patinacao no gelo. Tivemos um tempo muito legal. Bom, eu pelo menos tive, como voces podem perceber pelas risadas no video... rs Eu até me senti um pouco mal depois, mas ai já era tarde: tudo já tinha sido registrado pela camera! Desculpa ai pessoal, mas eu tenho que publicar... rsrs

We decided to do something different this end of year with the young adults, so we went to do ice skating. I think we had a great time. Well, at least I had, as you can realise by my laugher throughout the video... lol I actually felt bad later, but it was too late. I didn't mean to be rude and everything was already captured and registered by the camera! So, I am sorry guys, but I will have to publish this now... hehehe

Youth Christmas Party - Festa de Natal dos Adolescentes

No dia 23 de dezembro, ao invés te termos o nosso "youth social" na igreja, nos decidimos levar os adolescentes fazer algo diferente e especial, ja que o Natal estava perto. Fomos para Bexleyheath jogar boliche e comer juntos. Foi muito bom! Ai em baixo estão fotos.

On the 23rd of december, instead of having our normal youth social at the church, we decided to take the youth do something special as it was Christmas. We went to Bexleyheath to do bowling and have a meal together. We had a great time!

Carols By Glow Light

Como voces saber, nos temos uma pre-escola funcionando nas dependências da igreja. Todo ano, por volta do Natal, nos convidamos as crianças e os pais para um "Culto de Musicas de Natal a Luz Brilhante" (a tradução nao faz nenhum sentido. Existe uma palavra especifica em inglês pra descrever musicas de Natal: "carols". E o certo talvez seria esse culto acontecer "a luz de velas", mas por questões de segurança, são aquelas luzinhas de crianças que brilham "glow light"...).

Enfim, as crianças sempre apresentação uma encenação da historia de Natal, cantamos muitas musicas de Natal e no final temos um tempo pra comer e conversar uns com os outros. Eu estava tocando piano. Nos tivemos um tempo maravilhoso este ano. Parabéns a toda a equipe da pre- escola!

As you know, we have a pre-school running at the church premises from Monday to Friday all through the year. Every year around Christmas, we invite the parents and the children to a "Carols by Glow Light Service". The children do a play about the Christmas story, we all sing some carols together and then we have a nice time for refreshments and chatting. I was playing the piano. We had a great time this year. Well done to all the pre-school staff!

KK Club & Youth Social

Hoje tivemos mais um KK Club a mais um Youth Social. Bom ver criancas vindo para a igreja uma vez por mes a tarde, e os adolescentes a noite, somente para brincar e se divertir. Dá muito trabalho organisar, mas já temos colhido alguns frutos dessa atividade. Adolescentes que antes vinham somente pro "Youth Social" brincar, agora passaram a vir pro culto de adolescentes nas sextas. Pais que nao vinham pra igreja passaram a vir só por que viram que seus filhos estavam gostando do que estava acontecendo aqui. Essas atividades, além de serem divertidas, sao também boas formas de alcancar pessoas. Entao, nós oramos que Deus continue a dar forca boas idéias para os líderes de adolescentes e criancas.

Today we had another KK Club and another Youth Social. It is good to see children coming to church once a month in the afternoon, and the teenagers in the evening, only to play games and have fun. It is a lot of work, but we are already seeing some positive results of these activities. Youths who would only come to the Social, now come to the youth services on Fridays. Parents who were not part of the church decided to join the church when they saw their children were enjoying what was happening here. These programs, besides being fun, are good ways of reaching out. So, we pray that God will continue to give strength and good ideas for all the youth and children leaders.

Este ano a Sociedade Bíblica do Reino Unido encorajou todas as denominacoes a celebrarem o dia da Bíblia juntas no dia 23 de Outubro, celebrando também os 400 anos da versao mais importante da Bíblia em Ingles (King James). Eles também incentiveram as igrejas a refletir sobre a passagem de Neemias 8:1:18 durante o culto.

Baseado no texto eu preguei um sermao em que falava, entre outras coisas, que tínhamos que desenvolver uma "fome da palavra de Deus" similar a daquele povo. Nós, que moramos em democracias livres do Ocidente, temos um acesso tao fácil a Bíblia, que muitas vezes nao damos a ela o devido valor. Como ilustracao, eu contei como eu era chato com comida quando crianca e adolescente, e como eu tive que passar por uma situacao de fome (dias sem comida no meio da mata no meu treinamento militar) para aprender a dar valor a comida.

Eu rotineiramente recebo um feedback bom das minhas pregacoes - eu amo as pessoas da igreja. Eles me amam mais ainda e gostam muito de me ouvir ensinar! Mas dessa vez foi interessante ouvir como muitos deles simplesmente amaram que eu compartilhei algumas histórias pessoais como ilustracao, histórias de falhas, que me mostram como ser humano, que mostram que eu também estou num processo de aprendizado.
Eu definitivamente tenho que incluir mais histórias como essas em minhas pregacoes!
Quem dera todos os crentes fossem como eles: capazes de entender e apreciar pastor e "super-homem" nao sao sinonimos.
Quem dera todos os pastores fossem como eu: dispostos a aprender a falar de si mesmos e se exporem como seres humanos ques estao aprendendo e se desenvolvendo, e que sao passíveis de falhas.
Talvez as igrejas seriam completamente diferentes... mais amorosas, mais humanas, mais REAIS e GENUÍNAS!

This year the Bible Society encourajed all denominations to celebrate Bible Sunday on the 23rd Oct, celebrating together the 400th aniversary of the King James version of the Bible. They also encouraged us to be looking and reflecting at a passage: Nehemiah 8:1:18.
Based on this passage I preached a sermon in which I spoke that, among other things, we need to develop a similar hunger for the Word of God - just like that people. We, who live in free democracies of the West, have so easy access to the Bible that many times we don't really appreciate it as we should. As an illustration, I shared with them how picky I was with food and how I had to experience starvation (several days without food in a jungle as part of my military training) to learn to give the due value to food.
I often get a very positive feedback from my messages - I love the people in my church. They also love me and enjoy to hear me teaching. But, this time it was interesting to hear how many of them enjoyed listening to some of my personal stories as illustration; stories of failure, stories that show I am human, stories that show I am also in a learning process.
I will definetelly need to include more of those stories in my sermons and teachings!
How good it would be if every Christian was like them: able to understand and appreciate that pastor and "superman" are not synonymous.
How good it would be if every pastor was like me: willing to learn to talk about and expose themselves as human beings who are also learning and developing, people who also have faults.
Perhaps churches would be completely different... more loving, more "human", more REAL and GENUINE!

35th Ministry Aniversary - Vic & Lona - 35° Aniversário de Ministério

Esta noite tivemos um culto de celebracao pelo aniversário de 35 anos de ministério do Pr Victor e da Lona na nossa igreja: Emmanuel Baptist Church Thamesmead. Logo depois do culto tivemos uma celebracao com música, depoimentos e comida. Nós oramos que Deus continue a abencoá-los e continue a dar direcao para a igreja durante este tempo de transicao.

This evening we had a service of celebration for the aniversary of 35 years of ministry of Pr Victor and Lona at our church: Emmanuel Baptist Church Thamesmead. After the service we had a celebration with music, people sharing some memories and nice food. We pray that God will continue the bless them and continue to guide the church as we seek his guidance for this time of transition.

Despedida - Derrick & Verna - Farwell

Esta noite nós demos adeus ao Derrick e Verna. Infelizmente, eles estao retornando para a Jamaica, após um bom tempo em Londres e em nossa igreja. Nós tivemos um tempo bom, comendo e celebrando as bencaos de Deus na vida deles. Os dois serviram em muitos ministérios da igreja e sempre demonstraram, de forma bem prática, que tem coracoes voltados ao Senhor. Nós oramos que Deus continue abencoando eles e que eles continuem a ser bencao para a igreja na Jamaica.

This evening we said goodbye to Derrick and Verna. Sadly, they are returning to Jamaica after a long time in London and at our church. So, we had a nice time together eating and celebrating God's godness over their lives. They served in many areas of the church and have shown, in many practical ways, that they have a heart for the Lord. We pray God's blessings over them and pray that they continue to be a blessing to their church in Jamaica.

Holiday is finished! I arrived from Brazil very late last night and had to be up by 7 am to go to the London Baptist Association for a Children Safeguarding Course. The course was very interesting, by the way. We spoke about forms of communication with minors. We also discuss how to recognise signs of abouse and how we should proceed in such a case...

Férias no Brasil - Holidays in Brazil

Em agosto nós fomos de férias ao Brasil por algumas semanas. Nós tivemos um tempo muito bom em Santos com meus pais, Teté, meu irmao André e sua esposa Anne e os pais da Annalena. Ainda em Santos tive a oportunidade de celebrar meu aniversário duas vezes, no sábado com amigos e no domingo com o pessoal da família. Depois de 10 dias em Santos nós viajamos por alguns dias pela costa do litoral norte de Sao Paulo, aproveitando as praias e a natureza e revendo familiares, até que chegamos no Rio de Janeiro. Lá estava a grande razao para irmos ao Brasil desta vez: meu primeiro sobrinho Daniel Joaquim ia nascer. Ele nasceu no dia 2 de Setembro bem saudável, muito fofo! Nós pudemos passar ainda alguns dias com ele e toda a família antes de voltar para Londres.
Muitos momentos ótimos com muitas pessoas queridas e muitas fotos pra compartilhar desse tempo no Brasil, mas o nascimento de uma nova vida é muito marcante. Esse garotinho já conquistou o coracao do titio...

During August/September we were in Holidays in Brazil for a few weeks. We had a great time in Santos with my parents, Tete, my brother Andre and his wife Anne and Annalena's parents. Still in Santos, I had the opportunity to celebrate my 30th birthday twice, on Saturday with my friends and on the following Sunday with my relatives.
After 10 days in Santos we traveled for a few days by the coast of Sao Paulo, enjoying the beaches and the nature and visiting relatives, until we finally got in Rio de Janeiro. There was the big reason for us going to Brazil this time: my first nephew Daniel Joaquim was to be born. He was born on the 2nd September and is very cute and healthy. We could spend a few days with him and the family before we returned to London.
Many good memories of time spent with very dear people, and many photos to share from this time. But the highlight could be no other than the coming of a new life. This little boy already became very dear to uncle Rod...

On this day we were returning from our youth trip. We took them to Soul Survivor again this year, which is the biggest and the best youth event for Christian young people in the UK. We had a precious time together, it was a blessing to all of us! I will upload a video very soon summarising the 5 days we spent over there...

Emmanuel Church 6 x 4 Mountain of Fire

Os garotos da igreja organizaram esse jogo contra uma outra igreja de Thamesmead neste domingo. O jogo estava quatro a quatro e foi pra prorrogacao, aí fizemos mais 2 gols e vencemos. Esses garotos estao de parabens, tanto pelo futebol como pelo testemunho - pois nao entraram na provocacao e nas brigas.

The boys of church arranged this match against another church this Sunday. It finished 4 - 4 and then we went to extra time, when we scored two more goals. Well done guys! I am proud of you, you played great football and gave a brillant testimony by not giving in to the provocation and fights.

Aniversário da Annalena - Annalena's Birthday

Este domingo foi o aniversário da Annalena. Ela fez um bolo e algumas pessoas da igreja deram uma passada em casa para parabenizá-la. Nós todos tivemos um tempo muito bom.

This Sunday was Annalena's birthday. She baked a cake and some people from church passed by our house to congratulate her. We all had a great and relaxed time together.

Conferencia de Homens - Men's Conference

Neste sábado tivemos uma conferencia de homens na igreja. Devia ter uns 40 homens no total. Eu liderei o louvor e o Rev Andrew da Welling Baptist Church trouxe a palavra. A conferencia durou o dia todo e nós tivemos um tempo muito agradável na presenca de Deus.

This Saturday we had a Men's conference in our church. There were about 40 of us there. I led worship and Rev Andrew from Welling Baptist Church preached. The conference last for the whole day and we had a very pleasant time in the presence of God.

Picnic dos Jovens - Young Adults Picnic

Domingo passado tivemos um picnic no "Lesnes Abbey" com os jovens da igreja. O tempo estava otimo, mais de 30 graus! Vieram muitos jovens, mais que 20. Passamos um tempo bom, comendo, conversando e brincando.

This Sunday we had a picnic at Lesnes Abbey with the young adults from church. The weather was great, very sunny and warm. We had a good turn up, more than 20 of us were there. We had a good and relaxing time, eating, talking and playing.

Casamento - Dole & Tino - Wedding

Agentes de Bencao e Transformacao - Agents of Blessing & Transformation

O nosso tema este ano na igreja é "Um Ano de Bencao e Transformacao". Todos nós, quando ouvimos essas palavras, automaticamente pensamos em nós mesmos como recipientes da transformacao, recebedores da bencao. Na minha pregacao domingo passado encorajei cada membro da igreja a refletir sobre nosso papel e chamado para sermos intrumentos nas maos de Deus e "agentes de bencao e transformacao" para outras pessoas. O texto base foi Gálatas 6:9:10:

"E não nos cansemos de fazer o bem, pois no tempo próprio colheremos, se não desanimarmos. Portanto, enquanto temos oportunidade, façamos o bem a todos, especialmente aos da família da fé."

Our theme for the year in the church is "A Year of Blessing and Transformation". Every and each one of us, when we hear these words, automatically think about ourselves as the recipients of transformation and receivers of blessing. In my sermon last Sunday I encouraged every member of the church to reflect about our role and calling to be an instrument in God's hands and "agents of blessing and transformation" to other people. The text I used was Galatians 6:9-10:

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers."

Fim de Semana - This Weekend

Muita coisa boa acontecendo este final de semana. Na sexta teve o casamento real do Príncipe William e Kate e a cidade toda estava em festa! Alguns dos adolescentes foram lá até as ruas do centro - eu preferi assistir de casa na televisao. Foi legal!

Em relacao a igreja: os homens retomaram seu café da manha e estudo bíblico neste sábado e, no domingo, iniciamos novos cursos da nossa escola bíblica para adultos: Dons Espirituais e Profetas Menores. O pessoal continua comparecendo em peso, 55 numa clase, 20 e poucos na outra.
Na segunda a gente fez um churrasco para os jovens na nossa casa. Muito legal, vieram uns 25 e o tempo estava ótimo! Veja as fotos abaixo:

Many nice things happening this weekend. On Friday was the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate and the whole city was celebrating! Some of our teenagers went to the streets in the town centre. I decided to watch it at home. It was nice!
In relation to the church: on Saturday the men decided to resume their breakfast and Bible study, what was good. On Sunday we launched our two new Bible classes for adults: Spiritual Gifts and Minor Prophets. Attendance was good: more than 20 in one class, more than 50 in the other.
On Monday we hosted a barbecue at our house for the young adults. It was nice, we had about 25 turning up and the weather was good. See the photos below:

King's Kids Club & Youth Social

"Youth Social" é o nome do nosso evento social mensal para os adolescentes da igreja e comunidade. Alguns meses atrás as criancas comecaram a reclamar que tinha muita coisa acontecendo pros adolescentes, mas pouco pra eles. Criamos entao o "King's Kids Club" que é uma versao do evento dos adolescentes para as criancas. Resumidamente eles vem para brincar na igreja. Os dois eventos aconteceram esse sábado em meio a toda a programacao de Páscoa, cedo vieram as criancas , mais de 20. No cair da tarde os adolescentes, uns 50. Muitos diriam que eu e os outros líderes passamos o dia na igreja brincando, mas acreditem, é um trabalho duro organizar tudo isso, supervisionar eles durante as atividades e limpar e arrumar tudo depois. Mas vale muito a pena e é muito gratificante! Veja o vídeo abaixo:

"Youth Social", as you know, is the name of our monthly social event for the young people. A while ago, the children started to 'complain' saying that there was too much going on for the teenagers, but not so much for them. We decided to create the "KK Club" for them then, which takes more or less the same format of the Social, but is more specific for the children. Both events happened this Saturday - between all the Easter services and activities - the children came earlier, more than twenty of them. Later on the young people came, around fifty of them. Many would say that we, the leaders, spent the whole day in the church playing. But trust me, it is hard work to organise all this, to supervise them while they play and to clean and tidy things later. But it is more than worth it! Check the video below:

Evangelismo de Páscoa - Easter Outreach

Aqui, a cada ano, temos o costume de ir cantar músicas de páscoa no centro de Thamesmead logo após o culto de páscoa na Sexta-feira. É uma forma de testemunhar da nossa fé e evangelisar algumas pessoas. Este ano além de cantar, distribuímos livretos contendo a história da páscoa que foram muito bem aceitos pelas pessoas que passavam! Aí está um vídeo que gravei rapidinho com o celular.

Every year, after our Good Friday Service, we go to Thamesmead town centre to sing Easter songs. It is a way to testify about our faith and eventualy evangelise some people. This year, besides singing, we also gave away some small booklets with the history of Easter - they were well accepted by the people passing by. Below is a video that I quickly recorded with my mobile.

Páscoa Judaica - Passover Meal

Esta noite na igreja nós tivemos um jantar didático sobre a páscoa judaica para os líderes da igreja e líderes de pequenos grupos. Comemos e experimentamos os "pratos" enquanto aprendíamos mais sobre o significado de cada elemento na cultura judaica. Tinha tudo lá: ervas amargas, agua salgada, ovos, etc. Foi interessante e tivemos um bom tempo de comunhao.

This evening we had a passover meal at church for the church leaders and cell group leaders. We had dinner and tried few of the traditional "dishes" while we learnt more about their meaning. There was everything there: bitter herbs, eggs, salted water, etc. It was very interesting and we had a wonderful time of fellowship.

Dr Haruna Memorial Service - Culto em Memória do Dr Haruna

Dr. Haruna foi um diácono da igreja, notavelmente muito amado por todos. Ele era médico e imigrou pra cá da Nigéria. Ele era também o pai do Isaac, um dos meus amigos e líderes dos adolescentes da igreja. Dr haruna faleceu 10 anos atrás e a família decidiu fazer esse culto de gratidao em sua memória. Aparentemente isso é algo bem africano, mas eu achei a idéia bem interessante. Foi um culto normal, tivemos louvor, pregacao, algumas pessoas deram depoimentos sobre sua personalidade e fé e a família deu um testemunho de como Deus os manteve de pé de lá pra cá dando glórias e gracas a Deus pelo seu amor e cuidado.

No final de tudo uma grande celebracao, um tempo de comunhao e muita comida boa! Foi um culto maravilhoso e eu achei cada momento muito precioso. Por que as pessoas nao fazem esse tipo de culto no Brasil?!?

Dr Haruna was a deacon of the church, noticeably very much loved by all who had the privilege to know him! He was a Nigerian man and a doctor. He was also Isaac's dad. Isaac is one of my friends from church and one of the youth leaders.
Dr Haruna passed away 10 years ago and the family decided to do this memorial service. Aparently this is an African thing, but I found the idea very interesting and and think all cultures could learn from them. It was a normal service, we had a worship time, preaching, then some people gave testimonies about Dr Haruna's personality and faith. Finally the family shared a testimony about how God has kept them since that, giving thanks and praise to the Lord for his love and care.
In the end we had a big celebration, a nice fellowship and a lot of good food!
It was just a wonderful time and I really liked the whole thing.
Why people don't do this kind of service in Brazil?!?
