For decades the stately columns of Sue Bennett College’s Helm Hall provided a home away from home for female students and all students gathered for meals in college dining hall, also in Helm Hall.

Today, Helm Hall is still in use for work camp volunteers and other programs. The Bennett Center campus also continues the legacy of education and community service that began with the opening of the original school more than 100 years ago.

Years of service have taken their toll on Helm Hall, and the building needs upgrades to the heating system and other improvements. Help us continue the Bennett Center legacy of service.

Last year’s proceeds were used to restore windows in the historic buildings, and funds from this year’s banquet will be used for upgrades to Helm Hall.

Tickets for the event are $75 each, or $500 for per table of eight.

The banquet will be held Friday, November 12, at the London Community Center.
It begins at 7 p.m., with entertainment by Catherine Ritch Guess.

For more information or tickets, call 606-877-1964.

Local residents can take a trip around the world just by visiting the Laurel County Public Library during the upcoming International Festival during the week of October 11th.

The programs and special events are being co-presented by the library and Somerset Community College Laurel Campus.

While past international programs have featured one day of activities, this year there are three days of scheduled events. All events are free and appropriate for all ages, except for the movie and discussion. Registration is not required, except for the food demonstration.

The program is as follows:

Monday, October 11th
3—8 pm Poster and Mannequin Display—View an array of head-and-shoulders mannequins featuring international designs of hair and makeup styled by SCC cosmetology students. They will be accompanied by posters created by eighth graders from East Bernstadt Independent School.

3—6 pm Foreign Film and Discussion—In The Drummer, a young man discovers Zen drumming but is forced to choose between it and family loyalty. Following the film, Rob Spencer and Aaron Bradley from SCC will lead an informal discussion.

6:30—7:30 pm	Guest Speaker—Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Deborah Payne will discuss her ‘07-’09 experiences in Uganda.

Tuesday, October 12th
3—8 pm Poster and Mannequin Display (see Monday for description)

4—5 pm Anime Program—SCC librarian Pam Rush will explain the origins of Japanese anime and show some clips. This program will be most enjoyed by ages 10 and older.

5—6:30 pm Middle Eastern Food Demonstration—Learn about Middle Eastern food as local residents from India and Pakistan demonstrate how to prepare some dishes native to their counties. (Space is limited. Registration required.)

6:30—7:30 pm	Kenya Storytime and Craft—Hear the touching story of 14 Cows for America, a Kenyan tribe’s gesture of understanding following 9/11. SCC faculty will help kids make a mask and learn a Kenyan song. This program will be most enjoyed by ages 7 and older.

Thursday, October 14th
10 am—8 pm Ten Thousand Villages Sale—Discover handcrafted home décor and gifts made by fairly paid artisans from more than 30 countries at this sale coordinated by Friends of the Laurel County Public Library and Ten Thousand Villages.

3—8 pm Poster and Mannequin Display (see Monday for description)

4—7 pm Tabletop Displays—Let our local international community share their home countries as you browse through these exhibits featuring cultural and informational items.

5:30—6 pm Guest Speaker—Hear a unique perspective on an often misunderstood country as Iraq native Dr. Saadi Hassan, SCC Professor of Sociology, explains the people of Iraq and the problems facing them.

6:30—7:30 pm	Music by The Big Maracas—Come listen to “musica Latina” from the Big Maracas as they play Cuban son, Brazilian samba, batucada, calypso, plena, and more. Know Spanish? You can sing along. Fun for all ages.
