Lodi Community Band “swings into spring” with dinner and dance event

Of the popular musical styles of the 1940s, few were as celebrated as big band. The large groups, each at the command of a director, played some of the era’s most popular music.

Director Art Holton leads the Lodi Community Band through a rehearsal for Swing Into Spring

This Friday, you have a chance to hear this kind of music up-close. The Lodi Community Band will host its Swing into Spring dinner and dance event from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lodi American Legion Hall.

“This will be a unique opportunity for enjoying some of the big band era’s most popular tunes,” said Ron Rader, the announcer and publicity manager for the band.

In addition to the Lodi Community Band, the swing band In The Mood will play.

A tri-tip dinner will be prepared by the American Legion Post 22 chefs under the guidance of Martin Jones, Adjutant of the Post. There will also be a no-host bar offering adult beverages.

The band will also highlight several student musicians, as it is a student-oriented organization.

“We offer two summer music camp scholarships every year,” Rader said.

High school students interested in joining the band must be enrolled at San Joaquin Delta College with the consent of their high school principal. Students can earn one unit of college credit.

The band has a long history in the community.

“We are Lodi’s only all-volunteer community band, with a history dating back to the 1870s,” Rader said.

For Rader, this concert celebrates the music of his youth.

“At age 81, this is the music of my life, music that I grew up with and still remember most fondly,” he said.

In addition to the food and music, two door prizes will be offered: an iPod Touch and the weekend use of a cabin in Tahoe. Raffle prizes and a silent auction will be offered over the course of the evening as well.

The Lodi Community Band’s weekly rehearsals continue throughout the summer! We’re meeting every Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the American Legion Building, situated at 320 N. Washington Street, Lodi (just west of the Lodi Grape Festival Grounds, at the corner of Washington and Lockeford Streets).

Due to budget cuts, San Joaquin Delta College is not offering course credit for summer participation in the Band! So there is no need to register as a Delta College student in order to be a member of the Band during the summer months! Rather, each member will pay a one-time fee of $25 to help cover our expenses.

Meet Our Summer Director

This summer, we welcome Chris Anderson to the Director’s podium! Chris is a well-known and highly respected San Joaquin County musician. A graduate of the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music, he has been active as a music educator, performer and conductor for over 25 years. He is often featured as a soloist, clinician, and guest conductor with area performing groups and schools. As a trombonist, Mr. Anderson currently performs with The Swingaires, Stockton Concert Band, and Tropical Nights, and has performed with Mel Torme, Dave Brubeck, Arturo Sandoval, Andy Martin, and Claudia Villela. In April 2010, he performed and conducted one number with the Stockton Concert Band at Carnegie Hall in New York City. He is a member of the California Music Educators Association, California Band Directors Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the American Federation of Musicians.

This year’s patriotic extravaganza will take place on June 30, 2011, beginning at 5:00 p.m. on the Omega Nu Stage at Hutchins Street Square, 125 South Hutchins Street, Lodi.

Fall 2011

Due to budget cuts, San Joaquin Delta College is not offering course credit for participation in the Band during the 2011-12 school year. Rather, each member will register as a participant in a Delta College Adult Education Class, a self-funded, fee-based program. Members aged 17 and under will participate via Delta’s Kids’ College program. The fee will be $60 per member, per semester. Registration forms will be distributed at the first Fall 2011 rehearsal, when Art Holton, Jr., Delta College’s Director of Bands resumes directing for the 2011-12 year.
