Desde el lanzamiento de su álbum debut homónimo en marzo de 1974, Rush han sido reconocidos por su maestría musical, por sus complejas composiciones y por la ecléctica temática de sus letras, dominadas por la ciencia ficción, la fantasía, la filosofía libertaria y desarrollando también temas humanitarios, sociales, emocionales y medioambientales. Thievery Corporation es un dúo de DJ y productores musicales de la ciudad de Washington. Lo integran Rob Garza y Eric Hilton y ocasionalmente, músicos de sesión. Su música puede definirse dentro del estilo de música electrónica denominado downtempo, con influencias del dub, el acid jazz, la música de la India y de Brasil, en una fusión combinada con una estética lounge.thievery Corporation aportan la visión de Babilonia por parte de la música electrónica.

El hard rock y el heavy rock de los 80’s, en los 90’s mutaron hacia el power metal. Y pocos géneros son tan dados a fabular y a la fantasía como el power metal. Una de las bandas representativas de este sonido a finales del siglo pasado fueron Edguy. Un grupo con bastantes semejanzas a Manowar que también quiso expresar su visión de Babilonia en “Babylon”, extraído de su disco ‘Threatre of Salvation’.

El conjunto sueco Deathstars es una formación que le pega al metal industrial, al que añaden ciertas pinceladas gotico-siniestras. Lo cierto es que con sus dos últimos lps -’Termination Bliss’ y ‘Night Electric Night’- han conseguido cierta popularidad y, sobre todo, incrementar su base de seguidores. Precisamente, uno de los cortes de ‘Night Electric Night’, el séptimo, es “Babylon”, donde plasman su visión de Babilonia.

WASP – Babylon’s Burning

La última entrega discográfica de Blackie Lawless y sus WASP llevó por título el de ‘Babylon’. WASP se acercaron a la mítica Babilonia y en una de sus composiciones se abordó su caída. Más bien, su incendio, al más puro estilo romano. Y, claro, no nos extraña nada de que hablen de fuego y destrucción ya que el disco gira entorno a la acción de Los Cuatro Jinetes de la Apocalipsis. Por otra parte, un tema muy en la línea de Blackie Lawless.

Sigur Ros – Avalon

Ávalon o Avalón es el nombre de una isla legendaria de la mitología celta en algún lugar de las islas Británicas donde, según la leyenda, los manzanos dan sabrosas frutas durante todo el año y habitan nueve reinas hadas, entre ellas Morgana. El mismo nombre del lugar derivaría de la palabra celta abal, manzana.
Por supuesto, este paraje o reino de las hadas ha sido fuente de inspiración para diversos artísticos, los músicos entre ellos. Éste es el caso de Sigur Ros. Su segundo álbum, el que les llevó a la fama internacional de la que ahora gozan, estaba cerrado por un tema instrumental de cuatro minutos llamado “Avalon”. Como curiosidad citar que si se cuadriplica su velocidad, se escucha la versión instrumental de “Starálfur”, el tercer corte de ‘Ágætis byrjun’.

Skindred – Babylon

Una curiosa mezcla musical es la que facturan los galeses Skindred, que se encargan de fusionar metal alternativo como punk y reggae. Ellos lo llaman “ragga-metal”. Y no suena nada mal, desde luego. Una banda que está liderada por su cantante, Benji Webbe, que antes hacía lo mismo en Dub War.
Sy primer larga duración llevó por título el de ‘Babylon’. Alcanzó el puesto 189 del Billboard 200 estadounidense y al número 1 de la lista de Reggae. Además su número 1 en el Top Reggae Albums se produjo en dos ocasiones, una nada más salir en 2002 y otra en 2006. Entre las canciones que lo componían se encontraba la que daba título al disco: “Babylon”. En la gira de prensentación de su debut discográfico tuvieron la fortuna de ejercer de teloneros de Korn.

Goldfrapp – Utopia

Tomás Moro escribió un libro sobre Utopía, comunidad ficticia cuya organización política, económica y cultural contrasta en numerosos aspectos con las sociedades humanas contemporáneas del escritor. El concepto de utopía hace referencia al anhelo de mundos ideales y perfectos que tiene el ser humano.
La música tampoco ha sido ajena a estos mundos ideales e utópicos. Por ejemplo, la formación británica de música electrónica Goldfrapp compusieron una canción así llamada, que fue incluida en su debut discográfico: Felt Mountain. Además, en octubre de 2000 fue lanzada como segundo single del álbum.

Cindy Lauper – Sisters of Avalon

El reino de las hadas ubicado en una isla cercana a Gran Bretaña ha dado para mucho en el mundo de la música. Otra canción inspirada por él fue “Sisters of Avalon” de Cindy Lauper. Su quinto disco en estudio llevó éste nombre por título y la primera canción también se tituló así.
La canción trata sobre el poder femenino y, como curiosidad, podemos decir que únicamente fue editada como single en Japón. Sin embargo, un sampler de la misma si fue publicada en Estados Unidos en un promo cd.

Uriah Heep – Return to Fantasy

La monotonía nos mata y todos buscamos algo divertido que hacer, algo que despierte a la fantasía. Uriah Heep son de los de perderse por recónditos escondites a la luz de la luna para regresar a las ensoñaciones fantásticas. “Return to Fantasy” fue el tema que dio nombre al octavo disco en estudio de esta formación británica de rock.
Un álbum editado en 1975 y que se coló en el top-10 de ventas del Reino Unido, alcanzando el séptimo puesto. De hecho, “Return to Fantasy” es uno de los trabajos con los que Uriah Heep lograron un mayor número de ventas. Sus dos grandes singles fueron este “Return to Fantasy” y “Prima Donna”.
