I love Leo Kottke, and have seen him perform many times. He’s got a dry quirky sense of humor, and sometimes the stories go off on some very odd tangents. His guitar style is unique and awesome. Leo only has a handful of songs with vocals (perhaps for good reason), but Pamela Brown is one of my all time favorites.

Leo Kottke (born 11 September 1945, Athens, Georgia, U.S.) is an acoustic guitarist. He is widely known for his innovative fingerpicking style, which draws on influences from blues, jazz, and folk music, and his syncopated, polyphonic melodies. Kottke has overcome a series of personal obstacles including partial loss of hearing and a nearly career-ending bout with tendon damage in his hand to emerge as a widely-recognized master of his instrument.
Focusing primarily on instrumental composition and playing, Kottke has sporadically moved in a vocal direction, singing in an unconventional yet expressive baritone famously self-described as sounding like “geese farts on a muggy day”. In concert, Kottke intersperses humorous and often bizarre monologues with vocal and instrumental selections from throughout his career, played solo on his signature 6- and 12-string guitars.

A rainy day. A semi-lazy day. For what ever reason, seems like it’s finally time to get back into the Live Things project. To get things started again, here’s a track from two virtuoso’s from different cultures: Bela Fleck (banjo) and Toumani Diabante (kora). Both instruments have a very different sound, yet have the same sort of tonal qualities. They really sound beautiful together.

It’s a Beautiful Day was a band formed in San Francisco, California in 1967, the brainchild of violinist and vocalist David LaFlamme.

LaFlamme, a former soloist with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, had previously been in the band Orkustra, and unusually, played a five-string violin. The other members were his wife Linda (keyboards), Pattie Santos (vocals), Hal Wagenet (guitar), Mitchell Holman (bass) and Val Fuentes (drums). Although they were one of the earliest and most important San Francisco bands to emerge from the Summer of Love, It’s a Beautiful Day never quite achieved the success of their contemporaries such as The Grateful Dead and Santana, with whom they had connections. It’s A Beautiful Day created a unique blend of rock, jazz, folk, classical and world beat styles during the seven years the band was officially together.
The band’s debut album, It’s a Beautiful Day, released in 1969, featured the tracks “White Bird”, “Hot Summer Day”, “Time Is” and “Bombay Calling”. The intro of the last was used, at a slower tempo, by Deep Purple as the intro to “Child in Time” on its In Rock album. The vocals and violin playing of David LaFlamme plus Pattie Santos’ singing attracted attention including FM radio play, and nationally, “White Bird” bubbled under Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, peaking at #118.
By 1970 the original lineup of the band had changed somewhat; the LaFlammes had split up and Linda left the band, replaced by Fred Webb. The following album, Marrying Maiden, released in 1970, included memorable tracks and was also a chart hit. In that year, the group also performed at the Holland Pop Festival at the Kralingse Bos in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and at the UK Bath Festival.
The band continued on to record Choice Quality Stuff/Anytime in 1971 and the live album Live At Carnegie Hall in 1972, touring until 1974 when they split up. In 1976, LaFlamme’s solo version of “White Bird” finally cracked the Hot 100 Chart, peaking at #89. Pattie Santos was killed in a car crash on December 14, 1989.
It’s a Beautiful Day reunited in 1997 under the name “David LaFlamme Band” for a new recording label. The band still features founder David LaFlamme and original drummer Val Fuentes. Other band members are LaFlamme’s current wife, Linda Baker LaFlamme (vocals), Toby Gray (basses), Gary Thomas (keyboards), Rob Espinosa (guitars), Michael Prichard (percussion). They completed a string of shows in 2005 and 2006 and toured with Jefferson Starship in 2007, and LaFlamme contributed to Jefferson Starship’s 2008 release, Jefferson’s Tree of Liberty.
A version of “White Bird” by violinist Vanessa-Mae was released in 2001 and reached number 66 in the UK Singles Chart.

This is the first date of the brief (two-week) Japanese tour George Harrison undertook with Eric Clapton and his touring band in late 1991; as nearly everyone knows, this would mark his final series of live appearances aside from a charity gig in London a few months later. The performance is solid throughout; the band sounded well-rehearsed and professional and based on this recording one could never sense George’s well-known aversion to performing live. The setlist is identical throughout the tour, and a great mix of Beatles and solo material (with a brief EC showcase in the middle of the set).

Supertramp were a British progressive rock band that released a series of top-selling albums in the 1970s and early 1980s.
Their early music included ambitious concept albums, from which were drawn a number of hits including “Bloody Well Right”, “Dreamer”, “Goodbye Stranger”, “Give a Little Bit” and “The Logical Song”. Supertramp attained superstardom in the United States, Canada, and most of Europe, although they were not quite as popular in their home country, the UK. Nonetheless, the album Breakfast in America was a big hit there, reaching number three on the UK charts and featuring two top 10 singles.

Lewis Allan “Lou” Reed (born March 2, 1942) is an American rock musician best known as the guitarist, vocalist and principal songwriter of The Velvet Underground as well as a successful solo artist whose career has spanned several decades. The band gained little mainstream attention during their career, but became one of the most influential of their era. As the Velvet Underground’s main songwriter, Reed analyzed subjects of personal experience that rarely had been examined so openly in rock and roll, including a variety of sexual topics and drug culture and use. As a guitarist, he was a pioneer of many guitar effects including distortion, high volume feedback, and nonstandard tunings.
Reed began a long and eclectic solo career in 1971. He had a hit the following year with “Walk on the Wild Side”, though for more than a decade he seemed to wilfully evade the mainstream commercial success its chart status offered him. One of rock’s most volatile personalities, Reed’s work as a solo artist has frustrated critics wishing for a return of The Velvet Underground. The most notable example is 1975’s infamous double LP of recorded feedback loops, Metal Machine Music, upon which Reed later commented: “No one is supposed to be able to do a thing like that and survive.” By the late 1980s, however, he had garnered recognition as an elder statesman of rock.
