Defending champion Novak Djokovic moved into the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters 1000 with a 6-2 7-6 (7-1) victory over Germany's Tommy Haas.

Sixth seed Juan Martin del Potro beat Jurgen Melzer 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2).

In the ladies draw, Russia's Vera Zvonareva surged into the quarter-finals with a 6-4 6-4 win over Li Na.

Zvonareva will play Caroline Wozniacki in the last eight after the Danish ninth seed beat Poland's compatriot Urszula Radwanska 7-5 6-3.

Elsewhere, Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 17, who beat second seed Jelena Jankovic in the last round, was leading Nuria Llagostera Vives 6-3 3-0 when the Spaniard retired with a hip strain.

Victoria Azarenka of Belarus beat Israel's Shahar Peer 7-5 6-4 and will play the winner of the match between top seed Dinara Safina and American veteran Jill Craybas.

In the doubles, British duo Andy Murray and Ross Hutchins reached the quarter-finals with a 6-1 6-3 win over Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa.

Hull City boss Phil Brown accused Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas of spitting at his assistant Brian Horton at the end of their stormy FA Cup quarter-final.

Arsenal scored twice late on to win 2-1 at the Emirates and seal a last-four date against Chelsea at Wembley.

Brown said: "For their club captain Cesc Fabregas to spit at my assistant at the end of the game shows you what this club is all about."

Fabregas, who was out injured, later strenuously denied the allegation.

"I categorically deny that I spat at anybody after the match," said Arsenal's 21-year-old captain.

"I have never done this in my whole career on the pitch, so why would I do it when I am not even playing?

"I can understand the frustration of losing a game to a dubious goal, that has happened to me many times in my career as well. But this is not the fault of me or any of the Arsenal players."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said he knew nothing about the incident.

"I know nothing about that at all. I'm not a specialist to create newspaper stories, or to create things that are minor that might have happened in the tunnel. I'm sorry, I can't speak about something I haven't seen," said Wenger.

Fabregas, who is recovering from knee surgery, joined his team-mates on the pitch at the final whistle after two goals in the last 16 minutes from Robin van Persie and a disputed header from William Gallas cancelled out Nick Barmby's early strike.

Brown added: "I was there and I witnessed it, he spat at my assistant manager down the tunnel, that's their club captain. Hopefully he's proud of himself. He spat at his feet."

Hull's boss was furious after the defeat, as the game ended without the two managers shaking hands, criticising referee Mike Riley and his officials of succumbing to pressure from Arsenal and boss Wenger.

He said: "The game was turned on its head when the referee succumbed to local pressure."

Brown also condemned his Arsenal counterpart's behaviour as The Emirates crowd taunted Hull for what they saw as time-wasting.

He said: "Mr Wenger decides to join in and the result is my goalkeeper getting booked in the second half.

"Arsene Wenger got my goalkeeper booked. You call that good management? He was complaining about time-wasting. It's an absolute disgrace."

Asked about Wenger's failure to shake his hand at the final whistle, Brown said: "He never does."

Brown added: "We haven't been beaten by Arsenal, and they are fourth top of the Premier League. We have been beaten by a linesman's decision and a referee's decision for Gallas' goal."

Arsene Wenger may enjoy an illustrious reputation as the most successful manager in Arsenal’s history, but the man himself enjoyed a much more inauspicious playing career before joining the London club in 1996.

Born in Strasbourg, France, Arsene Wenger began playing football for the nearby village football team of FC Duttlenheim before being recruited to play for regional amateur side AS Mutzig. While studying for a Master’s degree in Economics, Wenger played for several amateur football sides before turning professional in 1978, where he played for RC Strasbourg. His career as a professional player was short-lived, however, and upon attaining a manager’s diploma he was appointed coach of the club’s youth team.

His first senior managerial post came in 1984 when he was appointed manager for AS Nancy where he spent three seasons before moving to French team AS Monaco in 1987; winning Le Championnat in his first full season in charge. He stayed with the club until the 1994/95 season, rebuffing advances from Bayern Munich and the French national team, but was fired after a poor start to that season. After Monaco, he moved to Japan to coach J-League side, Grampus Eight where he enjoyed a successful eighteen months.

Wenger returned to Europe in October 1996 where, after becoming friends with then Arsenal vice-chairman, David Dein, he took over the reins at Highbury and has continued through the club’s move to the new Emirates stadium. Wenger had replaced the Scottish manager Bruce Rioch and in his first season led the London side to third place in the English Premier Division, missing out on Champions League qualification on goal difference. The following season, Wenger and Arsenal won both the Premiership and the FA cup, thus achieving only the second double in the club’s history. However, despite some high-profile signings, Arsenal would be trophy-less until the 2000/01 season where they would once again capture the League and FA Cup double.

Following on from this, the club won the FA Cup again in 2003 and the Premiership in 2003/04; the latter achieved without a single defeat. Another FA Cup win followed in 2005, but despite a measure of success in domestic competitions, Arsenal have failed to successfully crack the European stage. The closest the club have come was a 2-1 loss to Barcelona in the 2005/06 final.

Wenger now enjoys a reputation as one of the best managers in the modern game, and is renowned for his talent of unearthing and nurturing unknown players of potential. Wenger is credited with discovering players such as Liberia’s George Weah who later became FIFA World Player of the Year with AC Milan and has brought young, raw talent to Arsenal in the shape of Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka, Patrick Viera, Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie among others. But while Wenger has made occasional big money signings – most notably the recent signing of Russian international, Andrei Arshavin – his net spend when compared to other Premiership managers pales in comparison, and has been estimated at around £5million per season since he joined the club.

As well as a talent for spotting and bringing in young talent, Wenger can also be credited as resurrecting the careers of veteran footballers, such as Dennis Bergkamp, who enjoyed his best years under the Frenchman, while his support of Tony Adams in 1996 has been lauded as a key factor in the player’s rehabilitation and return to form after alcoholism. His dietary and training regimes have also been credited for prolonging the playing careers of defenders Nigel Winterburn, Lee Dixon and Martin Keown over the years.

With an abundance of young talent at his disposal, such as Mexico’s Carlos Vela, England’s Kieran Gibbs and Theo Walcott, and backed with established professionals such as William Gallas, Gael Clichy and Emmanuel Adebayor, Arsenal and Arsene Wenger will continue to be a threat to all in the Premiership for seasons to come.

Manchester United on the Verge of Making History

Much like Liverpool in the late 70s and throughout the 80s, Manchester United have undoubtedly been the driving force of British football of recent times with ten league titles and five FA Cup victories in the past two decades.

Since its inception in 1992, Manchester United has won the Premiership ten times, more than any other club. With 17 top flight titles to its name, Man United still lag behind northern rivals Liverpool who have 18; however, with the Red Devils seemingly on course to retain their Premiership crown, 2008/09 could be the season that they catch up with Liverpool.

Manchester United's dominance of the Premiership began in its first season. Despite an indifferent start, the signing of Eric Cantona in November 1992 marked the changing point as the talismanic Frenchman guided them to the 1992/93 title, beating Aston Villa into second place with a ten point margin.

The team went on to win four of the first five Premierships - their run only broken by an Alan Shearer inspired Blackburn Rovers team in 1994/95 - and in all won nine of the first 12.

Arguably the most notable of these was the 1998/99 season when Manchester United won a historic treble of the Premiership, FA Cup and Champions League. Before the season started, Sir Alex Ferguson spent £28m bolstering his squad, twice breaking the club's record transfers when he signed Jaap Stam and Dwight Yorke. After winning the league on the last day, they beat Newcastle in the FA Cup final before triumphing over Bayern Munich, coming from a goal behind to both equalise and score the winner in stoppage time.

After winning the league in 2002/03, Man United went three seasons without another title - their longest in Premiership history - as Arsenal went unbeaten to lift the 2003/04 trophy and Chelsea, enjoying the benefits of the Russian ruble, won back to back championships afterwards.

The 2006/07 season saw Manchester United reclaim their crown before successfully defending the title the following season, as Cristiano Ronaldo topped the scoring charts with 31 goals.

The start of the 2008/09 season saw Man United once again falter and Liverpool took the reins as they seemed to be looking to increase the gap between the two sides. However, by Christmas, Manchester United had closed the gap with two thirds of the season gone, the Red Devils look firmly in control of the championship race.

British tennis fans also have a new face to cheer as fans eagerly wait for more from Laura Robson, the 14 year old tennis hopeful who made her mark by winning the Wimbledon junior title in the women's singles.

As the football season takes a break in the summer, the popularity of tennis at grass roots level always soars. This year's much improved weather in the UK has also helped, and across cities and towns you can see local tennis courts packed out with players of all ages old trying their best to imitate Roger Federer's forehand or Venus Williams' serve. Tennis has also always had its personalities who express their own unique styles and fashion sense on the court, which is often replicated by amateur players.

Whether it's Rafael Nadal's vest top with long past-the-knee shorts, Roger Federer's cardigan or Serena Williams' rain jacket you don't have to look hard to see the fashions made famous by the players being copied across a tennis court near you.

Some players try a fashion accessory which is slightly more subtle than the traditional sweat band or baseball cap, and instead sport a tennis bracelet. First made famous in 1987 by glamorous tennis star Chris Evert, the tennis bracelet is a string of dazzling diamonds worn around the wrist. Prior to 1987, tennis bracelets were previously known as in-line bracelets, because it is, essentially, a line of diamonds around your wrist. During a match in 1987 Chris Evert’s in-line bracelet broke, scattering diamonds around the court and buying her time to recover her breath and eventually go on to win the match. Since then in-line bracelets have been known as tennis bracelets and have become synonymous with style, elegance and the summer.

So if you're looking for a slightly different accessory to make your tennis outfit stand out this summer, forget the sweatband and try a tennis bracelet instead.

Aberdeen: The New Home of Golf?

Scotland is the home of many things - whisky, tartan and shortbread to name a few - but it is perhaps the Scots' contribution to the world of sport that has had the biggest affect on the world.

From 1456, when the first recorded game of golf (for which records survive) took place at Bruntsfield Links in Edinburgh, Scotland has been seen the world over as the main destination for golfing holidays. While St Andrews has become the focus point for the game for many years, with the Old Course being seen as the mecca for golfers, Aberdeen is soon to be in the limelight now that Donald Trump's billion pound proposal has been granted permission from the Scottish government.

Mr Trump's plans include two championship calibre courses and a five-star hotel - as well as a golfing academy and holiday homes - on a 1400 acre stretch of beach and sand dunes along the north east coast, around seven miles to the north of Aberdeen. Work on the development at Menie Estate is due to begin in early 2009.

Aberdeen is home to a high number of golf courses already and its oldest - the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club which was founded in 1780 - hosted the 2005 Senior British Open. This newest inclusion to the local golf scene has hopes to host the Open Championship and perhaps, with its golfing academy, it may help produce players capable of challenging for success at the top level of the game.

Scottish golfers have had their share of success. Tommy Armour and Bobby Cruickshank have more PGA Tour wins than any other European golfers, Colin Montgomerie has the third highest number of European Tour wins and Sam Torrance, Sandy Lyle and Bernard Gallacher all feature in the top twenty. Aberdeen born Paul Lawrie made history in 1999 when, on the last day of the Open Championship, he started 10 shots behind the leader to win the event - the largest third round deficit ever faced by a major championship winner.

Mr Lawrie also has plans for a golf course in Aberdeenshire and Jack Nicklaus has also earmarked a site nearby for a course and hotel, as golfing interest in Europe's oil capital continues to grow.

By now, hopefully, the myth that the word golf derived from the acronym "gentlemen only; ladies forbidden" has been thorough debunked (its origin is likely to be the old Scottish word "goulf" or "gowf" which means "to strike") meaning that both genders can get flights to Aberdeen to enjoy the new golf course.

Does Edwin Van der Sar have the Safest Hands in Soccer?

Records are made to be broken; whether it's laying in a tub of cold baked-beans or participating in the world’s longest conga, it appears that on any given day, someone somewhere will try to break a record of some sort.

One record which may be under threat can be found within the football world; more specifically the English Premiership and the number of consecutive games a goalkeeper has played without conceding a goal.

On 8th February 2009, in a match against West Ham, Dutchman Edwin Van der Sar kept his 13th consecutive clean sheet and in the process amassed a total of 1,212 minutes without having to pick the ball out of the net. The feat surpassed the previous British club record of 1,196 minutes, which had been set by former Rangers goalkeeper Chris Woods during his time at Ibrox, but who has since called Van der Sar’s achievement into question. However, whether or not Van der Sar has indeed broken the British record, he still has a way to go to beat the current world record holder.

According to the FIFA approved International Federation of Football History and Statistics list, the record for the longest time spent without conceding a goal is 1,816 minutes; set by Geraldo Pereira de Matos Filho of Brazilian club, Vasco da Gama between 1977 and 1978, it leaves Van der Sar with some 604 minutes of football to play in order to beat the record.

Van der Sar’s record places him in eleventh place in the list, ahead of Porto goalkeeper Vitor Baia and Bulgarian, Dimitar Ivankov of Levski Sofia; but one more clean sheet will see the Dutchman enter the top ten shutout league at position number six. From there, however, he needs to keep yet another clean sheet for at least 88 minutes to beat the current World record of 1,390 minutes, which is held by Belgian ‘keeper Dany Verlinden.

Even then, though, such a feat would still leave him well short of the all-time record set by the Brazilian, also known as Mazaropi, with a further 426 minutes to be played before the Manchester United ‘keeper could lay claim to the title of World number one.

Mazaropi’s record has, however, been called into question and it is claimed that several of the matches which contributed to Mazaropi’s streak of shutouts were gained at regional level, and not at professional level. Former British record holder, Chris Woods, has also suggested that Van der Sar is some way short of his British record, claiming his own achievement was made in consecutive matches, whereas the Dutchman’s tally has been interspersed with rest periods in some matches where he did not play.

But regardless of whether Van der Sar achieves the milestone of most consecutive shutouts or not, few can deny the Manchester United goalkeeper his place among the world’s great goalkeepers.

England tops the UEFA coefficients

The debate over which of Europe's leagues is best is one that is seemingly never-ending with the opinions of various people always flexible, however, the debate is normally narrowed down to three countries, with England, Italy and Spain leading the pack and France and Germany not too far behind.

The UEFA coefficient is used to work out how many teams each league will have in the UEFA Cup and Champions League. It is based on the success of each nation's teams in European competitions over the past five seasons: each win by a club earns two points for its country and a draw earns one point, the total is then divided by the number of teams that entered European tournament from the country that season. Points during the preliminary rounds have a 50% value and bonus points are awarded for reaching various stages of the two European competitions.

Despite Manchester United being the only outstanding team in the league at the moment, the English Premiership currently tops the current standings. The top three is completed by Spain and Italy. England's Premier League was boosted by the appearance of three clubs - Chelsea, Liverpool and, eventual winners, Man United - in the semi finals of last season's Champions League. Despite this win, and their dominance of the English game over the past couple of decades, Manchester United are only rated as the seventh best club in Europe. Ahead of them lies Arsenal, Liverpool and, top of the table, Chelsea, with AC Milan and Barcelona also in the top five. This success edged England ahead of Spain in the rankings by a tight margin of 0.5, while the gap between La Liga and Serie A is close to 15 points.

These top three countries are granted four places in the Champions League and a further three in the UEFA Cup. The following three countries - currently France, Germany and Russia - each gets three teams in both of the European competitions. The next three also get six European places but these are split differently, with just two clubs in the Champions League.

The UEFA coefficient system based on five years began in 1960 and since then only four countries have topped the table: La Liga for 15 years, Serie A for 13, the English league for 11 and the Bundesliga for 10.

So, although the English Premier League is currently on top, there's no reason to think that it's going to stay there indefinitely.

Beckham wants to stay at AC Milan, leave LA Galaxy

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP)—David Beckham wants to leave the Los Angeles Galaxy and stay with AC Milan after his loan to the Italian club is scheduled to end next month.

The 33-year-old English midfielder announced his intentions Wednesday after playing in Milan’s 2-2 exhibition tie at Glasgow Rangers. Beckham has scored twice for Milan and been included in the team’s 25-man roster for UEFA Cup games against Werder Bremen on Feb. 18 and 26.

His three-month loan is due to end March 8.

“At the moment my lawyers are not talking to the Galaxy,” Beckham said. “But I have expressed my desire to stay at AC Milan now, and it’s just down to Milan and Galaxy to come to an agreement.”

“I have enjoyed my time here,” he added. “I knew I would enjoy it but I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I have and do as well as I have.”

Beckham is about two years into a $32.5 million, five-year contract with Major League Soccer. The Galaxy had no immediate comment.

“At this point it’s out of my hands,” the 33-year-old star said. “I’ve said what my feelings are to both clubs.”

Since coming to Italy, Beckham has scored twice and helped to lift Milan to second place in the Serie A standings.

“At the moment I’m still a Galaxy player,” he said. “I respect the Galaxy and everything they have done for me. They have always been great to me.”

Beckham needs one appearance to tie defender Bobby Moore at 108 for the second-most international games in English history, trailing only goalkeeper Peter Shilton’s 125, and wants to play for England at next year’s World Cup in South Africa.

“To be given the chance again to play at this level at my age is pretty incredible and I’ve enjoyed it so much I would like to continue it,” he said. “I think people have seen the way I’ve been since playing at this level again.”

“It’s nothing against the MLS and the football over there because it’s a game that will grow, but it will take quite a few years,” he added. “I’m still confident that will happen eventually, but I want to have a chance of being involved in 2010 and I believe my best chance of doing so is to remain here.”

The Steelers made history when they defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 in Super Bowl XLIII to win their sixth Super Bowl, the first team in NFL history to accomplish that.

Some last minute heroics by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes secured the win, when he scored the go ahead touchdown with just 35 seconds left on the clock.

The Steelers were in control for the majority of the game, but the Cardinals fought back to take a late lead. That’s when Roethlisberger and Holmes hooked for the game-winning drive.

The Steelers came out of the gates strong, driving down the field on their opening drive. Roethlisberger hit Hines Ward at the 50-yard line and Ward broke free for a 38-yard gain to the Cardinals 32-yard line. Willie Parker rattled off a nine-yard run and added a one-yard carry for the first down. Roethlisberger went to the air again, connecting with Heath Miller at the one-yard line. On first-and-goal Gary Russell lost four yards, but Parker got them right back. Roethlisberger took it himself on third-and-goal for an apparent touchdown, but the Cardinals challenged the call and he was ruled down short of the goal line. Jeff Reed came on for a chip shot from 18 yards out to give the Steelers the 3-0 lead.

James Farrior stopped Edgerrin James for no gain on the Cardinals first offensive play, but Kurt Warner was then able to find Steve Breaston for a 10-yard gain to their 37-yard line. A holding call on the next play backed the Cardinals up to the 27-yard line. Warner fumbled the snap on the next play, but James came up with the recovery. The Cardinals weren’t able to get out of the hole they dug themselves, though, and were forced to punt.

Roethlisberger continued with the hot hand, hitting Santonio Holmes who turned it in to a 25-yard gain to the Cardinals 44-yard line. Roethlisberger hit Holmes again for five yards, but a false start on the next play wiped out the gain. On third-and-10 Roethlisberger worked his magic, escaping the pressure, getting free and then firing it across to field to Miller for an 11-yard gain. Roethlisberger went back to Miller for 11 yards before Parker went off right tackle for eight yards to the 14-yard line. A short gain by Parker and completion to Miller gave the Steelers a third-and-goal at the one-yard line. This time there would be no denying them as Gary Russell took it off right guard for the touchdown and 10-0 lead.

The Cardinals came marching back, though, with a key play in their drive a 45-yard completion to Anquan Boldin at the one-yard line. Warner hit Ben Patrick for the one-yard touchdown to pull the Cardinals within a field goal at 10-7.

Neither team was able to go anywhere on the next drive, but then the Cardinals got a huge break when Bryan Robinson tipped a Roethlisberger pass and Karlos Dansby intercepted it at the Steelers 33-yard line. The Steelers got pressure on Warner forcing two incomplete passes, but on third down Warner hit Tim Hightower for a first down. Warner kept it in the air with an 11-yard completion to Larry Fitzgerald for a 12-yard gain toe the 12-yard line. Boldin pulled in a seven-yard gain and added a four-yard gain to the one-yard line.

Just as the Cardinals were poised to at the very least tie the game going into the half, Harrison showed why he was named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year when he intercepted Warner at the goal line. Harrison, who was aided by blocks along the right sideline, returned it 100 yards for a touchdown as time ran out in the half for a 17-7 lead. Roethlisberger had to get rid of the ball while under pressure, but was hit late on the play for a 15-yard penalty, giving the Steelers the ball on the Cardinals 35-yard line. Roethlisberger hit Holmes for 15 yards and Parker went off right tackle for 15 yards. The Steelers weren’t able to punch it into the end zone, and Reed came on for a 27-yard field goal, but the Cardinals were called for a personal foul when holder Mitch Berger was run over. The Steelers got a new set of downs, but still had to settle for a Reed field goal for a 20-7 lead with 2:16 to play in the third quarter.

The Cardinals weren’t going away, though. Warner engineered an impressive scoring drive, completing all eight of his pass attempts for the 87 yards of the scoring drive, which culminated in a one-yard touchdown reception by Fitzgerald to pull them within six at 20-14.

Things continued to go in the Cardinals favor when they pinned the Steelers back at their own one-yard line. On third down, center Justin Hartwig was called for holding in the end zone, resulting in a safety to close the gap to 20-16.

The Cardinals made it count, when Fitzgerald caught a 64-yard touchdown pass from Warner, to take their first lead of the game, 23-20.

The Steelers fought back, though, and Holmes scored the winning touchdown with just 35 seconds left on the clock.
