璽 The Beauty of Contemporary Imperial Signet

In times of the feudal monarchy, Xi, the imperial signet was created to recall the majesty of the emperor, the "Son of Heaven". It is an object of symmetry and introspection, it is uplifting. Aesthetically, the signets' motifs express reverence and esteem for a higher power. In a time when all is known about the natural world, the dragon emerges as a metaphor for this respect.

Today, the "Son of Heaven" is an antiquated concept, yet from is a sense of pride emerges from he who bears it. And around it manifests a romanticized idea that regards the Son of Heaven as a gentleman who bears the weight of the world. Thd dragon is no longer merely a symbol of might but a symbol of our respect for nature.

"About the Duck"
Ducks appear clumsy
Very clamorous but in fact, quite intelligent;
Always appear in the right place.
The Chinese have a saying:
The ducks are the first to know the warm spring river waters.

Where there are blooming flowers and clear waters
You will find ducks.
A joyous, blessed, and happy place,
Groups of ducks gathered in pairs alight.

This has been an idea brewing in Loretta Hui-shan Yang's mind
For the past twenty years.
She thinks that one day, these ducks
Will come together and march in the same direction.

"Why Duck"
Why is it a duck
We have virtually forgotten what a duck looks like,
Because the only ducks we see are on our plates.

More and more I reminisce about the duck.
When I was a child at home in Hualien,
We raised ducks and turkeys in our garden.
Of course they were for feeding our stomachs
But I gave all of them names
Like "The Lady" and "Tuxedo"
Calling their names by the window, they would rush over in a flurry.
I wish I could recall the way they waddled,
Coming in groups like they were discussing important matters.
Their expressions should not be forgotten.
This is my duck, this is everyone’s duck.

In the beginning, there was a single face that spoke of mortal compassion and dignity.Liuligongfang was established in 1987. Loretta Hui-shan Yang's first piece was a bust of Buddha. This culpture became known as the Second Vow of the Medicine Buddha.For a film actor who had no prior training in sculpture,Loretta Yang determinedly went to work by the gully of her modest workshop and began sculpting with a ball of clay in hand.Thinking back, creating a visage that emanated compassion and wisdom was her only thought.This first sculpture led to a subsequent three hundred plus Buddhist figures in a span of twenty years.

Liuli Gongfang or Liuligongfang (琉璃工房) is Taiwan's contemporary glass studio devoted to artistic Chinese glassware. Since its establishment in 1987 Liuligongfang has become known in Asia and abroad for its outstanding artistic endeavors and its high standard of craftsmanship."Liuli" means ancient Chinese glass/crystal. It has a lineage stretching back thousands of years, first making its appearance in the 11th century BC. The art of Liuli left an indelible trail throughout Chinese history until the 19th century when China opened its door to imported goods, and effectively stifled traditional artisan skills.The discovery in 1968 of the tomb of Liu Shun, a nobleman from Man-Chung County in Hopei Province, unearthed the earliest recorded example of pate-de-verre. A glass ear cup was found behind the renowned "jade suit with gold thread." Archaeologists confirumed the glass material was of Chinese origin, indicating the pate-de-verre technique was indeed indigenous to China. This revelation was astounding and engendered in the group of artists a profound sense of mission to revive the artistry embedded in their own ancestry.Liuligongfang art works have been exhibited in Taiwan, Japan, Mainland China, Europe, and United States. Several pieces have become part of the permanent collection of some of the most well known museums. Inlucding The Palace Museum, Beijing, Shanghai Fine Arts Museum, Tsui Museum of Art, HongKong, Medicine Buddha Temple in Nara, Japan, The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C., United States, Victoria and Albert Museum in United Kingdom, Bowers Museum in California, United States.
