How did I get to this place where I was scheduling everything around a football game?

It’s been a long journey as citizen of the great state of Wisconsin, and with that comes a certain amount of Packer mania. That’s the Green Bay Packers, for those of you not following along with the great game of football. It’s also been a pretty lonely journey for me – as I am the only football fan in our home. My children aren’t interested in the game. And my husband? Forget it – Chris is an expatriate from the UK, and he can’t stand to watch American football, as he is absolutely certain that football in America pales in comparison to his beloved Rugby in terms of competition, strength and ability – among other unmentionables and streams of criticisms and obscenities that fly out of his mouth when he is subjected to an American football game (“a bunch of bloody wimps, they are”).

So, on Sunday afternoons – - and Monday nights during regular season, I am relegated to my own office for several hours while I watch the game of my choice, by myself. It is a lonely existence for a football fan, to be sure – but one that I religiously do because I love watching the game.

The retirement, un-retirement, retirement and un-retirement of Brett Favre colors my years of being a football fan and this weekend, I have come to realize something that will cause my brother, Scott, to hate me, for sure. More about that later.

Like most Packer fans, the pending retirement of our beloved number 4 was something we’d rather not talk about, at the time. We knew it was coming – but it was the 500 lb gorilla in the room that everyone was ignoring. That is, until 2008 when the Packers web site announced Brett Favre’s retirement from football. There it was. We had to deal with it. We all knew it was coming and when the announcement was posted to their web site – there was no denying it anymore.

Except . . an hour later, it was gone.

Thus began the drama of Brett’s retirement. First, he was retiring. Then, he filed a letter with the Packer’s organization requesting his release from contract so he could play for another team. Then the Packers offered him a $25 million ‘marketing contract’ as long as he remained retired. Then Favre gets traded to the Jets where he started out well enough, but ended the season with a pretty embarrassing string of interceptions in the last 5 games that left everyone speculating that he couldn’t play the game any more. Brett retired from the Jets when the season was over.

In August, 2008 – I posted about it here on this blog:

Sounds like Brett had a good opener with the New York Jets…..even though the Jets eventually lost to the Redskins today in the pre-season game. We saw Favre’s first season TD pass — a 4 yarder to TE Dustin Keller…as a Jet – not a Packer.

Favre playing for the Jets

Seeing Brett Favre in a New York Jets jersey?? Surreal! Like it’s all some strange dream.. or alternate universe. I’m not sure how long this will take – – or if it’s even possible for me – to get over. I really do like Brett Favre and I do really hope he’s happy playing for the Jets. Honest. But.. I’m feeling a bit like a jilted lover over here…like the guy who says “I just can’t handle a relationship right now..can we just be friends??”… then, BAM! The very next week you’re seeing him with someone new…and not only handling a relationship – – but HAPPY about it too. I’m feeling pangs of jealousy over hearing reports from the object of Brett Favre’s attentions..and how happy and excited they are at the prospect of a new season with the NFL’s best quarterback…meanwhile, we’re back here in Wisconsin trying to get to know, and eventually come to love this new guy – – what’s his name? Aaron….something.

I think I need therapy.

“It’s about me not being able to play at the level I’m accustomed to, ” Favre told ESPN.com in an email that year. Still, it was hard for us Packer fans to take.

However, in July 2009 – reports began to surface and speculation about Brett’s return to the NFL were circulating everywhere – - in particular, in Minnesota.

Is it POSSIBLE that Brett Farve would go play for the Vikings, for crying out loud?? THE VIKINGS! As a Green Bay Packer fan – it was unfathomable. What in the world could be worse than Brett Favre’s retirement from the Packers?? Well, if he went to play for someone like the Vikings – that would be way worse. WAY worse.

And yet….

There it was . . . . the number 4 – in all it’s purple glory.

PURPLE!

The outrage ensued – - – the sense of betrayal was palpable across the entire state of Wisconsin…and Minnesota – and beyond:

Minnesota Vikings Fans Hate Brett Favre…Again – “Anonymous Vikings (probably not Jackson or Rosenfels) said that Favre will be in purple for the third preseason game. I would have been excited if this weren’t the gazillionth time that Favre has courted the Vikings. This guy is like a bully holding your lunch money over your head, just out of your grasp, and then extending the gap as you get close to it.Eventually, you need to kick the bully in the nuts, grab your money, and run away.“

15 Best I Hate Brett Favre Shirts For Vikings-Packers Week - with t-shirt sayings such as “Benedict Brett“, “Once a Hero, Now a Zero“, “Public Enemy #4” and the last one leaves little question with “Brett, You’re a Dick“.

Packers Fans Commence the Obligatory Brett Favre Jersey Burning: Packers fans as you could imagine are not too thrilled to see Favre wearing purple these days.
Some Minnesota fans loved it – the Twin Cities became the Favre Cities and purple jerseys with the #4 were seen all over Minnesota. Meanwhile, as a Packer fan, we couldn’t help but feel betrayed.

For the largest part of my history as a Packer fan, Brett Favre was the man. He never missed a game, and started every single one of them. We were with him through every win, every painful loss – - even the really, really idiotic plays. We grieved with him through the death of his father, and his brother and when his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. He was as much a part of us as cheese and beer. To me, Brett Favre was the Packers – imagining the Packers without Brett was unthinkable — but seeing him in PURPLE?? Blasphemy!

A year and a half later, I have put it into better perspective. I have already received a WHOLE lot of crap for this from my brother – who is as anti-Brett-Favre as you can get – but it began around the end of the Jets season, I started to come to the conclusion that you CAN be a Packer fan AND a Brett Favre fan at the same time. It’s possible - I just couldn’t say it out loud.

When Brett was playing for an AFC team, it was easy to go back and forth. But then……Favre became one of the purple people.

NOW what?

I tried really hard to hate him. For the sake of my beloved Packers – - and my safety – I had to pick sides. I could no longer sit on the fence and breeze through the football season bouncing between Packer and Jets games on my TV. Now he is playing for the enemy – time to choose!

I was one of the 28.5 million people who sat down in front of their TV sets on October 5, 2009 to watch the Green Bay Packers play the Minnesota Vikings at the Metrodome. I sat down to watch that game a complete and total Packer fan. I fretted over the idea that the Packers could lose this game – - considering the Metrodome Curse that the Packers seem to suffer from. I love Favre – but I love the Packers more – I wanted to see them win this!

Then, during the course of the game – a very strange thing began to happen. Favre played an amazing game that night – he was on. He was the Favre we loved to watch back in Lambeau Field. Favre, the quarterback everyone loves to hate, completed that game with three touchdown passes and 271 yards in a 30-23 victory against the Packers. Those hours were schizophrenic ones for me – - I switched between two distinct different personalities: Lisa – the Packer Fan and Lisa the Brett Favre fan. It gave me a headache – but I walked away from that game feeling badly for the Packers – but elated for Favre. I still love to watch that man play football!

I could not admit this to my family, however — in particular my brother, Scott. Now THERE is a man who is rabid in his complete and utter distaste for everything Favre – - and to brush off the fact that I still root for #4 – my brother explains it away by saying that I’m a typical woman rooting for Favre because he looks good in tight pants.

Let’s face it – they ALL look good in tight pants, ok? I realize it’s easy for my brother, in his denial, to take the easy way out of it by going the tight pants route . . . but there was a truth emerging after that October 5th game at the Metrodome. A truth that I was not quite understanding…yet – - but it would come…

Fast forward to November 1 in Green Bay. The Vikings, once again, going up against their nemesis at Lambeau field. Brett was boo’d by Packer fans when he took his place on Lambeau field as a Minnesota Viking. Packer fans needed closure – - and this was cathartic for them. Brett had been like family to us for so many years — Favre could not expect anything less than an emotional, gut wrenching reaction from the fans in Green Bay:

A plane trailing a “Retire 4 Good” banner circled Lambeau in the hours before the game, and Favre was greeted with a long, loud chorus of boos when he jogged out for the game, the last of the Vikings to take the field. Oh, he heard cheers here and there, but they were largely drowned out by whistles and boos anytime he got close to the ball.

There were shirts calling him everything from “Traitor” to “Judas” to “Drama Queen.” One fan carried a poster with “True Legends Don’t Wear Purple.” Behind the Vikings bench, someone hung a “Welcome Back to Lambeau Field … B-R-E-N-T” sign.

“It’s like going into church on Sunday and the priest says, ‘Everybody go home, Jesus has now sided with the devil,” said Tom Fields, whose Favre jersey now has “JUDAS” on the back and big red slashes through the 4s.

Asked if he was surprised at the reaction, Favre said, “Sure, I would have loved …” and then paused.

“It was about what I expected,” he said.

But it’s impossible to ignore what Favre meant to the Packers, and the conflicting emotions were everywhere. Some fans wore Favre’s Vikings jersey beneath their Packers jackets. There were half Minnesota-half Green Bay jerseys. Other fans simply wore their old Green Bay No. 4s.

A smaller sign near the Vikings bench said, “Thanks 4 the Memories,” and another proclaimed Lambeau “Brett’s Field.”

It was bittersweet. Made worse by the fact that Favre lead the Vikings to a 38-26 defeat over the Packers on his old home turf. He had a pretty good game himself, that day…completed 17 of 28 passes for a total of 244 yards with 4 touchdown passes.

For me, the truth was beginning to emerge…it was hazy at first, but I was beginning to see the clear picture through the fog – - I began to realize that it is possible to be a Packer fan AND be a Favre fan all at the same time. (GASP!) Make no mistake, when the Vikings play the Packers – it’s a real fine line to walk. On one hand, you want to see the Packers win – - on the other hand, you want to see Favre do well. I do really enjoy watching Aaron Rogers step into Favre’s shoes and transform from a second string bench warmer to spreading his wings and becoming a really great quarterback.

My heart still aches for a Favre in Green and Gold – - but I have made it through the Kübler-Ross 5 stages of grief:

Denial — “It’s all a lie; no way is Favre playing for the Vikings”

Anger — “Why me? It’s not fair! – it’s Bush’s fault!”

Bargaining — “I promise not to burn my #4 jersey – just let Favre play ONE more season – just one!”

Depression — “It’s just not the same… the Packers without Favre – beer will never taste so good”

Acceptance – “Might as well go with it – Yay Packers! Yay Favre! – I can do both!”

Last week’s Viking game against the Cowboys cinched it for me. I watched the entire game from start to finish, all by myself – with only my Facebook and Twitter friends keeping me company (no one else around here will tolerate football, sadly). My husband, Chris, would pop his head in my office every once in awhile and ask if he could bring me a beer or barbecue a bratwurst for me, or something equally cliche’, as he walks off laughing to himself that anyone in their right mind could find American football the LEAST bit entertaining.

In the midst of that game, I realized – I still adore Brett Favre.

There. I said it. My name is Lisa Sabin-Wilson and I love Brett Favre.

Watching Favre play is to be reminded of the passion for the game. Gosh darn it, he just loves to play the game and that shines through whether Favre is winning, or losing. That’s why we loved him as a Packer — it’s why we were so betrayed and felt a deep sense of loss when he left Green Bay – - we love the man because he loves the game.

Watching him play the game takes us back – - it removed the commercialization of the game – - the corporate-ness of it all, and takes us back to why we just love the sport, period. That is the magic of watching Brett Favre play football. I have come to terms with that. He loves the game and it shows. You can’t help but catch the energy and passion that he puts into it – - no matter how much you want to hate him for all the drama, you just can’t help it. Ohhhh I’m going to catch so much hell from my brother for this….but it doesn’t matter if he’s green or purple, witnessing Brett Favre is witnessing football in its purest form. Just look at this face….

This is why Packer fans all over the fine state of Wisconsin are going to close and lock their doors, draw their curtains and turn on the game today and watch the Minnesota Vikings crush the New Orleans Saints for the NFC win. Packer fans are drawn to Favre, even still. They may not admit it (Scott – I KNOW you are watching today!) – but they will be there to watch it happen…all the way to the Super Bowl!

As for me, I would like to see the Vikings V. Jets in the Super Bowl with, of course, a Vikings win. Call me a traitor all you want (yes, Scott, I’m talking to YOU) – but I’ve come to terms with all of this drama and have put it all behind me. I love ‘em both – the Packers and Favre – tight pants, and all!

My decision to go into nursing in the first place wasn’t really the warm and fuzzy reason of wanting to take care of people and make them feel better. That is a nice bonus that comes after (reason #1) job security and (reason #2) steady income, if I’m being honest. When I started nursing school, I was a newly divorced single mom of 2 – the job security appealed to me a great deal, understandably. In my 15 years of nursing, I can’t say that I was completely unhappy doing it, but there certainly were aspects to the job that I really hated …. and some that I really enjoyed, and I always thought that, eventually, I would go back. I was not sure when that would be – or how or why, but being a nurse is not something that you entirely let go of, and not something you can completely walk away from either. I’ve always considered myself to be taking a break from it.

I said I would go back to it when I really started to miss it. I don’t. Not yet. Will I ever, really? I don’t know – - considering the changes and reforms happening in health care these days – - I don’t know if that is an industry that I ever want to situate myself in again. Time will tell – - but, for now, I continue to hold onto my license as an insurance policy in case everything else blows up.

In 2010, I have the same gripe I have now, as I did in 2008 – - – aside from a few bucks out of my pocket every two years, there are no educational requirements should I decide to re-enter the nursing field. In Wisconsin, mandatory continuing education as a condition of licensure exists for the majority of health care professionals except for nursing. Can you imagine? I haven’t practiced since 2004. That’s 6 years now. In the ever-changing field of medicine, I can’t even begin to imagine what I’ve missed and how much I don’t know. Honestly, in my world of graphic design, coding, writing tech books and web hosting – - I don’t do a lot of patient triage around here, ya know? If I decided to re-enter the nursing field tomorrow, I would have one helluva learning curve on my hands. And yet…I am legally allowed to walk onto any floor in any hospital and start practicing again, as if I never walked away.

As a potential patient in one of those hospitals – that scares me more than just a little. They don’t say that nurses are the front line of patient care for nothing, they are. Where would that put you, as my patient, if you walked into my ER tomorrow? Good thing you don’t have to worry about it, since I’m not returning any time soon.

No continuing education requirement for Registered Nurses in the state of Wisconsin, really? No proof of active practice required. No re-entry requirements to at least prove I know the difference between Haldol and Heparin? Is there no one at the Wisconsin Department of Regulation & Licensing who cares whether I am competently able to recognize vital signs within normal limits….and what to do if they are not? Let’s not even start in on the changes in pharmacology since I walked away from nursing 6 years ago. My best barometer of new drugs on the market these days are the spam emails I get about Viagra and Ephedrine.

And yet, I, Lisa Sabin-Wilson, RN, will send in my $80+ to the state of Wisconsin at the end of this month in order to hold on to that ability to walk into any hospital or care facility tomorrow and get a job if I need one. Because money is all it takes here in Wisconsin — no one out there really cares if I’m competent, as long as I’ve forked over the necessary fees every two years. In a nursing shortage, you would not believe what deficits and short comings the Directors who hire nurses will ignore in order to fill the quota on the floor. I’ve seen it over and over too many times to know that I would have no problems getting hired tomorrow if I wanted to.

Rest assured, any potential, future Wisconsin area patients of mine — when and if I do make the decision to re-enter the nursing field – - I will pick up where the Wisconsin Department of Regulation & Licensing leaves off….I will seek out the education I need in order to feel confident and competent, should I ever again step foot in a patient care facility in the official capacity of a Registered Nurse.

At least this year, for the 2010 renewal, aside from our payments, they are also requiring that we fill out a survey that will tell our government, and governing bodies, essential information about the current supply, demand, location, and skill level of Wisconsin’s nursing workforce. They are making the survey mandatory for Registered Nurses renewing their license in 2010. Armed with this information – policy and decision makers can sit around in board rooms for the next several years pontificating on how best to ensure a highly skilled nursing workforce in the state of Wisconsin.

In the meantime, I’ll send in my payment and look around for a good re-entry program, should I ever need it. Maybe by the year 2012, they’ll actually require that I prove competency after 8 years of non-active practice.

I know – crazy, right?

I used to be a person who was just happy listening to music on whatever medium was available – - the car radio, my home stereo system, the loudspeakers at the mall – it didn’t really matter to me. Although, I am a musician – and a classically trained one at that – my ear was never really very picky when it came to consuming music for my entertainment. My ear only seemed to be MY worst critic, not anyone else’s. That is until 1989, when I married a true audiophile geek. If there is one thing to be said about my ex-husband (we divorced in 1993), it’s that he has an amazing ear for reproducing music and sound as close as possible, if not better, than the original performance. His talent for mixing up sound to produce an absolute feast for the ears is surpassed by none, really – - at least no one that I’ve come across yet. And, man, I really hate to compliment the guy – but he is good. I guess that comes in handy in the studios, producing music. It’s one thing for him to be OCD about it in the studio – but he carried it with him wherever he went, and that applied to our own home entertainment system. He is picky to an absolute fault and is absolutely obsessive with extra special attention paid to sound quality and enhancements – and was especially picky about little things I never could really hear – - until he pointed them out to me, now I hear them in low quality systems everywhere I go.

It wasn’t until after I divorced him and spent some pretty lean years raising our two kids on my own that I realized my once beloved sources of music – - my car radio, my home stereo system – - pretty much anything that could reproduce my favorite tunes… those sources just weren’t good enough any more. My once lazy ear had been trained after years of marriage to an obsessive compulsive audiophile (to the nth degree!). But, those were some pretty lean years and there’s no way I could afford the system we once had in our living room (now in his possession) – - the Altec Lansings were clearly way above my pay grade.

Very recently, I purchased a recording of 100 of my favorite classical piano pieces. Classical piano is a part of my (almost) daily life – - I listen to it a lot, mostly while working and writing – - much to the dismay of my teenage children. There’s almost nothing I love more than to turn it up as loud as my system can handle it and then sit back, close my eyes and take it all in. I could do it for hours…and have.

The first day I played the recording on my PC with its 5.1 Logitech speaker system I’ve had in place for several years – - I queued up ‘La Camponella‘, adjusted the EQ so the treble, bass and mid-tones were just perfect (to suit my ear) – and sat back for a listen…and came up sorely wanting. My years of marriage to the audiophile geek were coming back to haunt me. The mix wasn’t right – - the speakers couldn’t handle the volume – the mid-tones muddled – - I was in sound quality hell, thanks to my ex-husband. No wonder I divorced him! (Actually, there were other reasons for the divorce that I just won’t go into here – - the snobby, elitist way he approached our home entertainment system wasn’t actually one of them.)

One day, I whined to my (current) husband about the curse of the audiophile, who is no longer in my life, but whose influence lingers on by way of my ears! I vented my frustration that morning and returned t my office, resigned to the less than stellar sound coming out of my Logitechs – - and then, on Christmas morning, when I unwrapped a box of the brand new Bose Companion 5 speakers system for my PC . . I knew I was headed for piano heaven. He listened to my woes and cries of dissatisfaction with my current sound environment and solved the problem on Christmas morning!

I set those speakers up on my PC and immediately cranked the volume on Chopin’s 27 Etudes, Op. 10, No. 25 in C Minor, ‘Revolutionary’, Op.10, No. 12 and knew immediately that I was in love — with the speakers, and with my (non audiophile geek) husband who acknowledges how my past continues to haunt me in ways that his ears cannot comprehend.

I’m enjoying how my classical piano recordings sound through these speakers just as much as my favorite Metallica albums (pre-St.Anger, naturally).

The Bose Companion 5 speaker system are affordable (I peeked!) and the sound quality is really amazing for what they are – - and they suit me perfectly. I don’t claim to be an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination - but my former husbands picky ear did wear off on me a little bit — even allll these years later. I guess I shouldn’t complain at all – there could have been WAY worse things that could still be lingering from that particular relationship – - a (somewhat) picky ear isn’t the worst thing in the world!

Hope you all had very happy (and safe!) holidays and are headed for a fantastic new year in 2010!

So I’m headed to bed for the night after working on my presentation for WordCamp NYC and thought I would put my money where my mouth is about attending WordCamp – - I would simply like to sponsor 10 attendees who would not otherwise have gone. That’s right – I’ll pay your ticket price to get you in the door.. all you have to do is get there. Game?

Pay attention – here are the rules:

I’m going to sleep right now – I’m exhausted.

Retweet this post

I’ll wake up in the morning

I’ll have my coffee first (this is an absolute requirement – I will NOT be bending this rule…not even a little, so don’t ask!)

Pick 10 random retweeters (who are NOT already registered – feel free to retweet and spread the news for those of you already registered) and send them an email to arrange their WordCamp NYC ticket

If I don’t have 10 takers by morning – I’ll keep this going all week until I have 10 people interested and registered.

Why am I doing this? Just because I’m sometimes random… sometimes spontaneous and sometimes get caught up in the excitement and spirit of things like WordCamp that I just want to share the fun and experience. Really – that’s it!

Can I get a re-tweet??

When I saw that WordCamp was organizing in NYC this month, it was a no-brainer for me to attend. I LOVE New York City – - anytime I get the chance to spend an evening at the Peking Duck House in Chinatown for some of their amazing Peking Duck – - I am SO there! Plus, it gives my husband and I the chance to spend time with his mother and do an early Thanksgiving the week before the actual holiday. Keeping the in-laws happy is always a bonus in my book!

What I am really excited about, however, is the opportunity I have been given to speak on a topic that I love and am really excited about right now! At 9:15 am Saturday morning – November 14 – I will take the stage and talk about growing communities with BuddyPress. This presentation will take a look at the features BuddyPress currently offers to help you grow your own community on your web site, including some tips and tricks I’ve come across along the way to help de-mystify the BuddyPress themes and templates to help you on your way to customizing your own BuddyPress community site.

As many of you may know, I just finished up writing BuddyPress For Dummies, which I am really excited about! The two books that I have written, so far, WordPress For Dummies and BuddyPress For Dummies – have been really challenging because the development of both of those projects move so very fast. As an author who needs to meet deadlines AND keep the content of the book relevant and as up to date as possible – - this can sometimes cause a lot of late nighters… nights without sleep at all and sometimes a LOT of fingernail biting and wall climbing! With a platform as new as BuddyPress – I very much (sometimes) had the feeling that I was making it all up as I went along! Heh – of course, that isn’t true… but there isn’t a whole lot of documentation on BuddyPress currently, so I really had to pick apart the program and get to know it rather intimately in order to write about it in the book to help other users make sense of it all. It is really one powerful platform – and the development, as it grows, is so exciting in terms of what you can do with it on your own site.

During the writing of this book – I have been eyebrow deep in the development and design of several BuddyPress sites for my clients. Notably, during the writing of it, I have worked on and completed two large community sites at: WeEarth.com and NourishNetwork.com – both powered by WordPress MU and BuddyPress – - and both very challenging sites to complete using those platforms, considering the amount of customizations and special features each client site wanted to integrate. They were both really great projects to be working on during the writing of BuddyPress For Dummies because they really helped me explore the platform more deeply that I normally would if I were just testing it out and playing around with it.

In addition to my presentation on Saturday morning, I am also running an open BuddyPress Workshop on Sunday, November 15th….the time has yet to be determined, but the basic idea is to sit down with new users and take you, step by step, from install to launch – helping you get familiar with the installation, setup, configuration, management and features/components available to you within BuddyPress to help you build, and maintain, an active and fun community site on your own domain. This workshop will be totally informal – so bring your laptops and your questions … as well as your own experiences to share! Considering that BuddyPress is so new and many people are just now discovering the potentials of the platform – - I hope for the workshop to be an open discussion where people can share their experiences and we can all learn new things from one another.

I am really looking forward to speaking about BuddyPress at WordCamp NYC – as well as meeting other BuddyPress users and developers who I can chat with and share experiences and hopefully learn from one another, as we all go down that path of discovering the amazingness that is BuddyPress.

Are you planning on attending WordCamp NYC? If so – drop a line in the comments – let me know where to find you on Twitter so I can add you and we can hook up and say hi in NY! I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone – - and a bit nervous about speaking publically .. so encouragement is required!

We moved!

For reasons too hairy to discuss, Chris and I had been renting a home over the past 6 years. It was a large single-family home on 5 acres of country land that suited us perfectly. We were hoping to buy that home as we were quite happy there for several years. Over those years, I knew that we should really get around to sitting down with the owner and pounding out the details of purchase – but time flies when you’re having fun doesn’t it? In the meantime, the economy took a dump and the owner of the beautiful home that we were renting called us up one day in July with the news that we had to move out within 30 days because he needed to move in! He is a successful business owner, locally, but it seemed that his own business started not doing so well, in addition to the fact that his wife announced that she was divorcing him – he found himself in the unfortunate place of being suddenly homeless without a lot of resources to draw from. So, after 6 years of living there (and all the storage, accumulation and ‘pack ratting’ that goes on) – we found ourselves in the position of suddenly having to move within a month!

Picking up and moving is no small feat – - especially when you have not planned or budgeted for it. There is the matter of first finding a new place to live, arranging the move, packing up ALL that stuff and all the great things that go along with it! Chaotic and crazy doesn’t even begin to cut it.

But, we did it! In the end – we persuaded the owner of our former home to give us 60 days, instead of 30 – which gave us a bit more time to get everything done. We found a new home just 30 minutes south of where we were living – and it’s a beautiful place to call home. I want to get pictures up to show you – - but the only one that I currently have is a picture I took of the 12 foot Pumpkin Guy that my family insists must be up on the front lawn every Halloween – - so here you go – -our new home behind the 12 foot Pumpkin Guy:

And in case you’d like a close up of Pumpkin Guy, himself….

On September 1, we officially settled into our new home. It’s now November 5th and we still have boxes that need unpacking and organizing to do – - but it’s hard to get all of that done when you’re running a business, raising a family, writing a book, trying to keep everyone happy and just trying to do little things like eat…sleep…breathe.

The reality is, you do what you can in a day – and then rest…then wake up and do it again the next day until it’s done. There’s only so much that can be done in a day and trying to stay realistic and keep everything in perspective without developing an ulcer was my greatest accomplishment over these past few months. But the move done – and we’re here and I’d rather not do something like this again anytime real soon, ok? Thanks!

Work has been nothing short of crazy!

On top of moving – - as well as coming down with every variation of seasonal flu’s, AND (for those of you who know the story) several rounds of oral surgery that I may some day expound upon here on this blog (maybe) – my work has been constant, fun and challenging! I’ve launched several new client sites over the past few months – with several more in the works. It is mostly the work, and the move, that have been keeping me from updating this blog, Twittering, being active on Facebook – - or any of that other fun stuff that other people do when they have time! Here’s a listing of a few client sites that I’ve done over the past few weeks – - some haven’t made it into my official portfolio yet – but all in good time!

Those are the few off the top of my head over the last 1-2 months that I’ve launched, there are more that I’ve done, and more coming soon – - one thing at a time and they’ll all see the light of day!

Speaking of work – - I did have to shut down our request form at E.Webscapes due to the amazing amount of requests for new projects that I am sorely lacking the time to get through myself at this point! I really wish I could spread myself that thin – - or maybe even clone myself, in order to get them all done and fit them into my schedule. But, alas – I gave up on being super woman several years ago (eat…sleep….breath…) To that end, I am currently hiring talented designers who are experienced in WordPress, WPMU, BuddyPress – and even some with experience with Movable Type, TypePad and Expression Engine to join our team at E.Webscapes. Know anyone interested? The official job posting appears here at Freelance Switch! I am looking to re-open requests for new projects after the Thanksgiving holidays – - between now and then, I’ll have the chance to get my current projects up to date and done, hire on a few new talented team members, re-organize our project management system and launch a clean new design over at E.Webscapes – - all that, and turkey dinner on Thanksgiving, too! Gobble, gobble!

I do have several other announcements that I’ll be making this week as it relates to my new book that is coming out soon (BuddyPress For Dummies), as well as personal speaking appearance I will be making in the Big Apple (NYC!) next week that I am really excited about. Think: WordPress, BuddyPress and building communities on the web. I will be blogging more about that over the next day or two!

Mea Culpa

Because of our sudden re-location, the activities involved in the move, the attack of flu season, my work and book deadlines and my recent surgeries (with all of the accompanying complications, days of hazy pain meds and recovery), I have been a bit isolated and (somewhat) incommunicado. If I am not working hard and long hours, I am unpacking and organizing… or recovering and trying to keep my health up. The flu appears to be finally over (yay!) and I am about 95% recovered from my surgeries…another day or two and I should be back to normal! My book is (mostly) done – at least the big push of deadlines is behind me now and life should start to settle back into some routine of ‘normal’ over here.

It’s a lot to have happen in just a few months time – - I have been purely exhausted, but working constantly – and I want to say that I sincerely appreciate friends/family who have been understanding without getting “too” offended that I haven’t been exactly sociable lately. I also have some phenomenal clients who I’ve been working with throughout who have been just fantastic and I love ‘em! I do have some projects and emails that I need to get caught up on – - but that is coming quicker than I anticipated, so that is a bonus… and your patience and graciousness is always very much appreciated!

Onward and upward from here – - it’s been a minor blip in the screen, but I’m re-energized and ready to keep moving forward. Thanks for stickin’ around here and I hope the flu season is leaving you, and those you love, alone!

The plan for me was to write the TypePad For Dummies book in between my editions of WordPress For Dummies…until I started talking to my editor about a WordPress enhancement called BuddyPress. Then, I attended WordCamp Chicago in June and had a very nice talk with Matt Mullenweg about BuddyPress, WordPress and WordPress MU and the plans for development in that arena in the very near future, and that basically sealed the deal and changed the plan. Wiley would find a new author for TypePad For Dummies and I would immediately start writing BuddyPress For Dummies. I’m really super excited about writing this book! I wrote a post last year about a web site that I built for a client of mine on the WordPress MU/ BuddyPress platform – and back then, I build it on a very very very beta version of BuddyPress. I’ve watched it grow over the past several months, and the platform is hawt!

As with all the Dummies series of books, BuddyPress For Dummies is meant to get users up and running with the basics of BuddyPress, as well as covering the WordPress/WordPress MU requirements for running it. For those of you who don’t know about BuddyPress – you can check them out on the official BuddyPress web site and read all about it – - join their community and friend me over there, if you want! Basically, it allows people with a WordPress powered site create a full blown social community on their web site. Think: Facebook – - only on a smaller level. Right now, BuddyPress only works if you are running WordPress MU — but look for that to change in the near future!

Excited!

What’s changed for me is that I am no longer the scheduled author for TypePad For Dummies, even though I had signed the contract and had already written the TOC (Table of Contents) and was well on my way to getting the first 25% of content delivered. I had my summer scheduled around the writing of that book, understanding that it needed to be done so I could begin the work on the 3rd edition of WordPress For Dummies.

Last week, right before I left for WordCamp Chicago, I had a long heart to heart with my editor at Wiley (Amy, I love you!) – we talked long about the exciting developments coming out of the WordPress dev. community, and from Automattic, as well. We discussed the excitement surrounding applications like BuddyPress and WordPress MU and I shared information on things that I know of regarding future plans for further development and innovation – - I think I made her head spin just a little (heh. welcome to the club!).

During our phone call, it was decided that it made more sense for me to stay focused on WordPress related projects that Wiley is currently involved with, considering my work on the WordPress For Dummies project and within the WP community, as a whole – - Wiley has a lot of WordPress related resource and reference material planned over the coming year. I have to say that Wiley Publishing has become true believers in the WordPress product and have caught the bug that so many of us feel within the community.

While I was excited to do the TypePad book – mostly because I do know that platform very well and I do love the opportunity to share that knowledge to help users learn and grow with their own content publishing efforts, no matter their platform of choice – and I am a bit sad to let that contract go. TypePad is going through some exciting times right now with their new platform roll out soon – users will be so much happier with the development that the TypePad team has been working so hard on. I do know that Wiley has an exciting author lined up to take my place as I return my focus back into the WordPress arena.

Also wanted to give a shout out to the TypePad folks who were so helpful and encouraging during the early phases of getting the TypePad For Dummies book project up and rolling – Claire Alcock, Andy Wibbles and Anil Dash – thanks for your support and encouragement. The new author of TypePad For Dummies is one lucky person to have such an energetic crew around to help and support them towards a successful release.

I’ll have an announcement soon with more specifics – I do have a new WordPress title in the works, and trust that it’s an exciting one!

It seems WordPress and I were destined

A true WordPress Trifecta – it’s brilliant.

I’m going through and reading my RSS feeds this evening and having a look at various reviews of the 2.8 release – almost all positive. Reviewed are the changes, large and small, from 2.7 to 2.8 – I am struck by an experience I had this evening with a brand new WordPress user, a client of mine, whom I met with for a few hours at a local Starbucks.

Chris and I met with her and her husband for coffee. They brought their laptop and I brought a copy of WordPress For Dummies to give to them as they begin their journey of transitioning their static HTML website to a WordPress powered site.

As we drank our coffee, they logged into their new WordPress Dashboard and I began taking them through the ‘How To’s’ of managing and maintaining their site. A quick tour of the Dashboard… the differences between WordPress Posts and Pages… how to create and maintain a list of links with link categories….how to sort posts into topics using categories…what are ‘parent’ and ‘child’ categories – - the list goes on.

We made our way through all of the essentials and they were simply awestruck at the ease and simplicity of this program. The mere fact that they could type content for an article on their site, click publish and that’s it. Their site is updated and they can move on to the business of running their business. Up until now, her husband has been hacking his way through HTML using Dreamweaver and FTP. Simple content edits on their existing website took excruciating effort, to the point where they let those updates lapse because it was just too daunting of a task for them during an already hectic and busy work week.

They actually let out a little cheer when I showed them how to edit their About page, and demonstrated how that 10 second edit and republish in the admin panel created the change to the page on the live website – - I’ve never quite seen anyone get teary eyed over a software platform before, but this couple was putting some seriously intense labor and hours into a website that will now only take them minutes a day to maintain.

As I’m reading through the reviews of 2.8, written by my experienced WordPress friends (and gurus) – I think this evenings experience was a very positive one for me, as well. As my friends are talking about and exploring some of the changes to the Plugin and Themes management page in their WordPress admin panel, discussing bug fixes, hooks and filters.. . . I just got home from a meeting with a couple who are so very grateful for the WordPress project just simply based on the fact that they can login, write and publish in a very small amount of time. For them – that is golden!

Pure simplicity.

Knowing some of the folks on the development team, the testers, the plugin and theme developers – I wonder how often they stop to think of the possibility that this evening, somewhere in a coffee shop in a little town in the middle of nowhere, their efforts at contributing to this platform truly improved and transformed the way a husband and wife team run their day to day business. Multiply that times a couple hundred thousand – and these developers, testers and designers are making an honest and profound difference in the lives of so many on a daily basis.

It’s pretty damn awesome if you stop and think about it.

This is the first time I’ve ever organized an event this big – with the exception of my wedding, but that’s a different animal altogether! My husband, Chris, and my assistant Lindsey were extremely helpful in helping me organize details with sponsors, equipment, venues, catering, etc. Brian Gardner was the guy in charge of getting the speakers lined up – and he did a phenomenal job of gathering a great group of folks that will make the weekend a very educational and informative one. Brian is also the official WordCamp Chicago Emcee.

I will be posting a bit more over at the WordCamp Chicago site on some further details that everyone should know before they attend – - look for that over the weekend.

Also want to thank the sponsors of WordCamp Chicago – for without them, this event would have never been realized: Dummies.com/Wiley Publishing, StudioPress, ServerBeach, Skype, WebDevStudios, Margaret Roach and of course my own companies E.Webscapes and Blogs About Hosting

I will be on the WordPress Weekly radio show this evening with Brian Gardner, discussing the upcoming WordCamp Chicago – it’s at 8pm EST, join us if you can!

The following content is re-posted, in full, from a post I did on this blog 4 years ago. Lots has changed in 4 years -- - even more has changed in the past 3 months. Anger, betrayal, hurt…those are all strong, real, but fleeting emotions. Love stays…and that never changes.

Originally posted in January 2005

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. At least, not in my daughter’s case. If ever I had a Mini-Me -- - she’s it.

When I was young(er) -- I made a living singing in a rock band. Yep -- Little-Known-Fact #101. It was me, as lead singer, and 5 guys. We were nothing spectacular . . . but we had a ton of fun and made a good living for about 5 years…. Or until I had kids and decided I needed to make the BETTER living, rather than the FUN living.

Adulthood sucks, man.

Music makes me soar (not sore… soar) . . and singing is still a great passion of mine, but the reality of adulthood and having mouths to feed became the priority in my life. So, I traded in my microphone for a stethoscope and spent the next 15 years as an RN. That job was extremely fulfilling, don’t get me wrong. But also don’t think that I don’t spend a good amount of time looking back on my music years with a wistful sigh.

I coulda been a contender!

Now I sing in the shower and various weddings for friends, family, friends of friends and their nephews.

Bah. A wedding singer.

My daughter, though! Man has she got some pipes! I love to sit and listen to her sing. Sometimes, when she’s doing her chores around the house -- - she turns up the tunes and sings along . . and I’ll come upstairs and just stand there in the corner watching her . . . listening. Until she sees me and lets out a blood curdling scream!

That’s me. Mom the stalker.

Tonight, her and I went shopping. She let me listen to the violin piece that she’s going to perform at a state competition in April. Her violin instructor recorded it onto a CD for her -- - which she then downloaded to her iPod.

Ahh. Technology.

So, I listened. It was her instructor playing the Minuet that she is supposed to learn. Would you believe that her instructor was MY instructor back in the day? Yep -- Ol’ Mr. M. I studied under him for years. That is, until the my junior year in high school -- they decided to put Orchestra and Choir during the same period -- - so I had to choose. I chose Choir. Mr. M. never forgave me -- - and do you believe he STILL brings it up everytime I go to one of my daughters concerts?

Anyways . . back to my daughter. After that discussion -- she started talking about which song she was going to sing for the school’s talent show in May. She’s narrowed it down to three songs by Kelly Clarkson and made me listen to all three. I can’t decide. She’ll do beautifully no matter which one she chooses.

That’s what I told her.

..”Mom? What is that butterfly song you used to sing to me when I was little?”

I smiled.

“It’s a song called ‘Dog and Butterfly’ . . done by Heart,” I said.

“Sing it,” she says.

“Now??,” I ask.

“Yes . . pleasepleasepleaseplease??,” she whines.

So I do. I surprise myself that I remembered all the lyrics. It brought back days of holding her little body close to mine. Sitting in her dark nursery in a old creaky rocking chair that I found at an estate sale that year.

But I remember every word just like it was yesterday.

I finished. She smiled and said, “It’s been a really long time and it’s just like I remember it. You never should have stopped singing, Mom.”

“You sing for me,” I said.

“I will, Mom,” she says. Then she opens up the page of the new book I bought for her: Learning How To Sing by Clay Aiken . . . . she wanted that book so bad. She turns to the first page and let’s out a little sigh.

“So perfect,” she says -- “If I ever write a book, I’m going to start it just this way.”

“What way,” I ask.

“The way Clay started his book: This is for my mother, who sang to me first”
