I love to take notes. A good note taking strategy will allow you to learn your subject better, in a smaller time frame. Good notes also help you to brush up your subject at a later date. There are lots of note taking tools available – free or otherwise.

MyNotex is a free note taking software that runs in Linux. It is available in the repositories of most Linux distributions.

In Ubuntu, you can install MyNotex from the Ubuntu Software Center, or from the command line as follows :

$ sudo apt-get install mynotex

It is available in Fedora repositories too.

MyNotex Interface

MyNotex note taking software

The first time you start using MyNotex note taking software, you will have to create a new file, give it a unique name and save it to a location on your hard disk. MyNotex stores all the data in files of extension
.mnt
.

From then on, you can start entering all your data in the file.

MyNotex interface is simple to understand and require no learning curve. Each MyNotex file (lets call it a notebook) can contain any number of subjects. And each subject can have unlimited notes.

Notes within subjects have the following features – an appropriate title, a date of creation/modification, any number of tags (separated by commas), and text. Optionally, you can also attach files of any type to each notes.

The main area of the notes interface is where you enter your text. It supports limited rich text functions. You can change the color, font, and alignment of the text.

Unfortunately, MyNotex doesn’t yet support embedding images in notes. If you want to insert an image in your notes, you have to do so by attaching the image to the note.

More over, it is not possible to embed notes within notes or subjects within another subject.

MyNotex allows you to encrypt individual notes in your notebook file. This is a useful feature if, for instance, you have a note that contain sensitive information that you want to keep from prying eyes. Encrypted notes in the notebook are shown in red.

At a later stage if you wish to convert the encrypted note to a normal one, that is possible too with the click of a button.

Main Features of MyNotex

Create multiple subjects in a single note file.

Each subject can have unlimited notes.

Rich text editing for text entered in notes.

Tag support – Add multiple tags for each note, separated by commas.

Attach any number of files to individual notes.

Encrypt individual notes.

Insert another MyNotex file as a new note in your MyNotex notebook.

Moving a note with possible related attachments between subjects.

Search within subjects and notes.

Import notes from Tomboy, Gnote, OpenOffice.org, and LibreOffice.

As far as taking notes go, MyNotex looks really promising as a note taking tool. It sports a few features that many note taking applications still do not have such as encrypting individual notes. All in all, MyNotex is one fine, Free, note taking software in Linux.

MyNotex homepage – sites.google.com/site/mynotex/home.

The monitor has a contrast ratio of 100000000:1 Max. Not surprisingly, the LCD monitor in its default setting was too bright for me. So the first thing I did was to reduce the brightness and contrast values to more acceptable levels.

LinuxAndFriends.com website as viewed in the monitor.

In the beginning, it took me some time to get comfortable staring at a shorter, rectangular screen because, my old LCD monitor (Benq FP567s), which is also a 15″ monitor, has a square shape and a much bigger screen height.

However, after a few days, I stopped noticing the difference. More over, because of the higher screen resolution (1366 x 768),the space on my Desktop virtually doubled.

Acer LCD Monitor Box mistakenly shows it as an LED monitor.

The Acer LCD monitor (P166HQL) is all plastic but the build quality is good. However, it has got a glossy finish and is a natural finger print attractor.

Linux users should feel happy as the Acer P166HQL is automatically detected in Linux. Ubuntu Linux detected it simply as an Acer Monitor and displayed the desktop at the correct default resolution of 1366 x 768. Fedora Linux however went one step further and detected the make (P166HQL) of the monitor as well. So this makes the Acer P166HQL LCD monitor Linux certified.

I paid for the Acer P166HQL LCD monitor a mere USD $78 -(Indian) Rs 3950. To my knowledge, LCD monitors don’t come any cheaper than this. In India, Acer offers a 3 year onsite warranty for this monitor.

Pros of the Acer P166HQL

One of the lowest priced monitor.

Decent build quality.

Consumes less power – A mere 10W when running.

Good brightness levels.

True plug-and-play in Linux and Windows.

Good resolution at 1366 x 768.

Comes with 3 years onsite warranty.

Cons of the Acer P166HQL

Glossy finish. Attracts dust and finger prints.

May cause eye fatigue due to glare when used near an open window during day time.

Many games do not occupy the whole screen because of the non-standard dimensions of the monitor.

Brightness levels were a bit too high for my tastes.

The buttons for adjusting the monitor settings are not labeled. So I had to figure out their functions by trial and error.

The box incorrectly labels it as LED. But it is actually an LCD monitor.

Bottom Line

If you are looking for a budget friendly 15″ LCD monitor for your computing needs, then the Acer P166HQL might suit you well. Priced at under $80, this is one cheap bargain as far as LCD monitors go.

However, the glossy screen of the LCD monitor reflects light like anything. If you intend to use it at a place where lots of natural light streams in, then you might want to buy an anti-glare screen as well, to avoid eye fatigue. Or better still, buy another monitor – preferably one that is less glossy and with a square dimension screen.

Here is how you do it.

WordPress has got an inbuilt PHP function to show content only on the home page of your site. This function is called
is_home()
.

And the actual code you have to use for displaying specific content only on the home page is as follows.

<?php if(is_home() && $post==$posts[0] && !is_paged()) { ?>

//You can add your content to be shown on the home page here.
//This includes images, links, and text.

<?php } ?>

Where to insert this code ?

That depends on where you want to see the content on your home page.

The default WordPress index or home page comprises of four sections namely -

the Header,

the Body,

the Sidebar, and

the Footer.

The corresponding files that insert the respective sections are
header.php
,
sidebar.php
,
footer.php
, and of course
index.php
.

So if you want specific content to be seen somewhere on the sidebar of your website – but only on the home page, then you insert the code in the
sidebar.php
file in your WordPress template.

But if the content is to be seen in the Header – exclusively on the home page, then you have to insert the code in the
header.php
and so on.

Exec-PHP WordPress Module

If you are a non-techie person and do not wish to dirty your hand editing template code, then this WordPress module is for you.

By default, WordPress doesn’t execute any PHP code when you insert it in your content editor. Exec-PHP is a module that allows you to do just that. By installing Exec-PHP module, you will be able to insert and execute PHP code in your content and Widgets as well.

So if you have installed and enabled the Exec-PHP module for your WordPress website, then you can insert the code I mentioned above in one of your template Widgets.

A few years back, Dubai built the world’s largest skyscraper named Burj Khalifa. Tokyo Sky Tree at 634 meters (2080 feet) is not as large as the Burj Khalifa (829 meters). But Tokyo Sky Tree tops the list of the tallest free standing towers.

A few facts about Tokyo Sky Tree

The following are some interesting facts on the world’s tallest broadcast tower – the Tokyo Sky Tree.

Sky Tree will be able to withstand even the strongest of earthquakes.

A special observation deck at 450 meters (1476 feet) will have an air corridor that snakes around its exterior.

You can view the stunning panorama of Tokyo spreading out in all directions.

It is 34 meters taller than the Canton Tower in Guangzhou, China.
