LinenMe. Sophisticated, luxurious and proudly Lithuanian

“Linen can be contemporary, it can be stylish and luxurious,” – says Inga Lukauskiene, a talented Lithuanian textile designer and founder of the first Lithuanian linen export brand LinenMe. It is a brave statement, but a wide selection of elegant and sophisticated linens available from her online shop LinenMe.com prove that there’s nothing old-fashioned about Lithuanian linen.

“For many years linen in Lithuania was perceived as un-cool and dated, however, in recent times linen is going through a revival stage. Pure linen is getting more and more popular, vintage weaving and designs are fashionable again, and linen shops in Lithuania are not just for the tourists,” – says I.Lukauskiene.

Linen towels, bedding, tablecloths, kitchen and bathroom accessories that bear the name “LinenMe” are manufactured in Plungė, at the family-run manufacturing unit.

Linen production is a cherished family tradition, with some members of Inga’s family having worked in the industry for over 30 years. The family takes great pride in keeping old linen production traditions alive.

“Once Lithuania gained the Independence, my mother, who has worked in linen industry for over 35 years, established her own linen production company in Plunge. For many years this company was manufacturing luxurious hand-made linen tablecloths, towels, bedding and other home accessories, but all this was carried out for foreign clients,” – says Inga Lukauskiene, a recent graduate from London’s KLC School of Design.

Over many years of successful partnerships Lithuanian linen was produced in Plunge for such globally known brands as Crate&Barrel (USA), Bloomingdales (USA), Conran (UK), Felissimo (Japan) and many others.

The young entrepreneur remembers: “I have been involved in linen production process since the very beginning, and it always struck me that no matter how high the quality is of our Lithuanian linen, it will still bear the name of some foreign brand, sold at a famous high street shop or a department store with just a tiny mention in the tag “Made in Lithuania”. We decided that it would be excellent to develop our own Lithuanian linen brand and try to establish it in the European, or perhaps even global, market.”

All table linen products in Rhomb Collection are produced from pure European linen fabric in a stunning weave. In geometry, a rhombus or a rhomb has four sides of the same length, and is also called a diamond.

The weave has fine lines of tiny rhombuses and looks both delicate and chic. With such a beautiful pattern, who needs further embellishments? This is why we decided against any other decorative finishes and only used mitered corners technique for finishing the edges.

Luxurious handmade items from Rhomb Collection are currently available in three different colours: white, black and wheat. When we say ‘white’, it is slightly off-white, but with the weave showing beautifully. And when we say ‘black’ the fabric is not actually pitch black; the weave beautifully incorporates black pattern into white background. The same goes for the ‘wheat’ shade.

As you can see in the pictures, we designed the whole collection with an easy option of mixing and matching items in various shades. We believe that if you get a white Rhomb linen tablecloth, it should look beautiful with either white, black or wheat napkins from the same range.

For those who love to explore linen products in natural home settings, we’ve created a range of table decorating ideas using crockery, cutlery and decorative items that are in rather usual designs and therefore not difficult to come across in any home.

White Rhomb table linen has a very strong classic feel to it. Pure white linen tablecloths have been the most preferred option in formal table dressings for centuries. And yet this stunning slightly off-white tablecloth (as well as white napkins and table runners) blends conventional and modern. Maison & Objet, certainly one of the most important trendsetting events in the world of home décor and design, has just taken place in Paris, France. It was the fourth time LinenMe designer Inga Lukauskiene visited the show, but the first time she took part as an exhibitor.

For the first time LinenMe, a brand of high quality Lithuanian linen, had its stand at Maison & Objet, presenting some of the best current collections of table linen, bed linen, kitchen linen and bath linen, as well as showcasing new products.

“Even though this is the first time LinenMe exhibits at Maison & Objet, I already knew what to expect and how important this trade show was,” said Inga on her return from Paris. “I managed to see some fantastic textile designs from all over the world, as well as present the most exciting linens from new LinenMe collections.”

New LinenMe ranges to look out for are Romb and Provance. They attracted the most attention from visitors at the show, and will be available via LinenMe online shop at the end of September 2009. Not long to go!

What are the ‘hot’ colours of the forthcoming season? Inga Lukauskiene points out neutrals, especially classic white and black. In addition, LinenMe will soon be launching new products in five accent colours (aubergine, violet, cintrine and others).

Textile pavilion at Maison & Objet had fantastic exhibitors this year, admits Inga: “Some of textile designers who exhibited at Maison & Objet specialise in specific categories of home linens (such as table linen, bed linen or bathroom linen), whilst others offered a much wider, varied assortment of designs. However, there were not that many focusing solely on flax products, so we had a good chance to be notable.”

Like any exhibitor, LinenMe received some valuable feedback. “Comments at our stand were mainly related to the quality of our products, as well as flawless finish, craftsmanship and affordability.”

The majority of show visitors are interior designers and retailers; according to Inga, not many of them knew the qualities and characteristics of Lithuanian linen. The fact LinenMe products are made of 100% European linen seemed to be a huge advantage, as there have been cases when huge companies known for their European linens have switched to trading flax products from China.

Apart from being a great platform for up and coming designers, Maison & Objet is a great place to conceive ideas for the forthcoming product ranges. Inga admits that this year she felt it was linen clothing and perhaps homeware where she would like to expand her expertise: “You won’t believe this, but the most interesting thing I noticed at Maison & Objet this year was the number of people wearing linen clothes. There were crowds of them! This must be good news for LinenMe, surely!”

“We are really excited to be able to present all our bed linen, table linen and home accessory collections at this prestigious exhibition in Paris,” – says LinenMe designer Inga Lukauskiene. “It will be the first time for LinenMe, and I am pleased I’ll be able to showcase a range of new products, as well as the lines already available from LinenMe.”

Maison&Objet, the exhibition of decor and design solutions, will take place in Paris Nord Villepinte, France, from the 4th through to the 8th of September 2009.

Holiday season is kicking off, and we have some lovely customer feedback to prove it! Here’s an email we at LinenMe received a few days ago, and if it was a letter with an envelope, it would probably have had a handful of beach sand in it! Thanks, Joanna!

Hi, Inga,

This is just a quick message to say how wonderful your linen towels are! I’ve ordered two linen huckaback towels from LinenMe Lucas collection in early spring as I was getting ready to go to Croatia with my husband.

Over years I struggled to find space in my suitcase for bulky terry cotton beach towels, and with many airlines reducing the allowed luggage weight, I was faced with a dilemma – shall I get rid of an extra pair of shoes, or sneak the hotel towel into my beach bag once I’m at the holiday resort?

I then stumbled across the lightweight huckaback linen towels while researching online, and even though my husband initially complained that linen can be coarse and not as snugly as cotton, I decided to give it a try.

And here I am, after two weeks spent on a stunning little island on the Dalmatian coast in Croatia. This may sound like I am exaggerating, but your linen towels made our holiday so much better! For a few simple reasons – they were extremely compact; very light and easy to hang up on the lower branches of pine trees; they dried literally in a blink of an eye, and, most importantly, they didn’t feature ghastly images or colours! Another excellent use was to cover our snorkelling bags and private belongings with the towel, and tuck the whole bundle in the shade or under a rock while we explored the underwater. It seemed so much safer as towels blended with the natural greys and browns of the rocky beach, ensuring that nobody was attracted to our valuables.

Needless to say, it was always a pleasure to use the towel after a long swim, and not have the issue of ‘damp towels’ for days!

Thank you so much for a great product. Pure linen huckaback towel is the second most important thing after suntan lotion to take on a holiday. At least in our household!
