It’s been almost a year to the day I launched Life, Laughs & Lemmings (geez time flies when you’re busy ticking things off your Daisy List!).

For those of you who’ve been around here for a while, you may remember a point where I came to a crossroads with the direction of this blog. Then, after some soul searching, head banging a brick wall and alcohol, I embarked on my world domination of the blogosphere with the intention of turning this blog into a business.

Well, about the only thing I dominated was the waves at Manly Beach and even that required a giant, Big Bird yellow, floatation device surfboard!

Whilst I enjoyed the writing and loved ticking things off my Daisy List, I’m not altogether interested in the monetizing aspect blogging. Monetizing is kinda important if you want to create a business.

So, it seems I am back at a crossroads. On top of this is another D word. What is it with me and D words? I’m beginning to form an involuntary twitch whenever I hear a word beginning with the letter D. This particular word starts with D and rhymes with schmepression.

Yep, it’s true, me, Sami, Daisy List extraordinaire, Lordess of Lemmings and Messiah to Aliens was recently diagnosed with mild to moderate depression.

“How is that possible?” I hear you ask, “This site is hardly depressive.” Well, I thought it was just moodiness and so would only write when I felt “up”. Truth is, until I started treatment, I didn’t realise just how down I was.

As with D word 1, I am completely grateful for D word 2 for a couple of reasons;

1. I now feel awesome (you thought my previous Flashdance was crazy, you should see my turbo charged, Zoloft fueled version now!).
2. It was a huge relief to know there was a reason I’d feel less than stellar on occasions, and it wasn’t just because I wasn’t trying hard enough to stay positive (for those who don’t know, depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain).
3. I have previously mentioned how I am yet to finish the last bit of healing from D word 1 (essentially the forgiveness part), well, the therapy I’ve done to counter D word 2 has also resulted in dealing with the last part of D word 1. I can now put my hand on my heart and say, I have forgiven. I really have.
4. I now have levels of motivation, energy and hopefulness that makes Richard Simmons look lethargic.

Having said all that, I am still in a recovery phase and one of the tasks I’ve been set is to reduce the number of projects on my plate. It is with this in mind I have decided to take a break from the blogosphere (both posting on this blog and commenting on others).

I am not necessarily walking away for good. At this point it is a hiatus for an undetermined amount of time. I may be back, I may not, either way I’ll be letting you know when I decide for sure.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you for stopping by here, commenting, subscribing, linking and generally showing your support. You are a phenomenal lot and I know I’ll miss interacting with you. The community around this blog is something else.

So, it’s not technically a good bye, it’s more like a “see ya later”!

Oh yeah, and just so you know, I plan to continue my quest to tick everything off my Daisy List. You’ll know I’ve completed number 25 when you see me on Oprah (or in jail charged with stalking – “But your Honour, the lemmings made me do it! Or maybe it was the aliens.”).

Dani from Positively Present came up with this month’s Random Acts of Kick Arse theme, and she chose passion.

I had planned on writing something quite different on the topic of passion but as life would have it, I was given inspiration that has led me in a different direction.

Lance, from The Jungle of Life recently posted a tribute to his friend, Amy Pratt. On February 25, Amy left this world at the all too young age of 34.

I didn’t know Amy but Lance’s beautiful tribute really impacted me. It reminded me that when I strip it all back, my two greatest passions are;

1. Those close to me.
2. Living like I mean it.

Whilst Amy has gone, from what I can gather from her site, She Sleeps With Sea Glass, she has left behind a legacy of love, caring, laughter and adventure. And a great example for the rest of us.

So, my friends, don’t wait.

Call that friend.

Spend time with your family.

Start that business.

Tell that person that you love them.

Use your “good” wine glasses.

Go on that trip.

Chase that dream.

Write that book.

Dance, play, explore.

Take the plunge.

Whatever it is you’ve been leaving for tomorrow or “some day”, let Amy’s story be your inspiration to do something about it today.

A short but sweet (and passionate) post today…

I’ve been thinking a LOT about passion this past month. Mostly because it was February’s Random Acts of Kick Arse theme thought up by Dani from Positively Present, one of the RAOKA Crusaders.

And what do you get when you cross a bumble bee with a bowling ball? Well, this…

Yep, that’s me. And before you ask, yes, I do realise I am a picture of sexiness. I am expecting a call from the Victoria’s Secret scouts any moment now.

For a birthday gift from Chris’ brother and his family, I was given 5 hot laps in a V8 buggy.

Now, I don’t mind a bit of speed (of the velocity sort, not the snort up your nose sort) but when I realised there were barely doors on this thing, my comment to Chris was, “I think I’m gonna poo my pants.” To which he replied, “At least it’ll be a fun poo.” “True,” I thought. I was beginning to understand the need for the overalls.

The poo situation wasn’t helped by the fact that my driver’s offsider felt it appropriate to inform my driver that I’d said he was old and didn’t know how to drive fast. My reaction was, “NO I DIDN’T! I DID NOT SAY THAT! I DIDN’T. I PROMISE. I DID NOT SAY THAT! BEFORE YOU TOUCH THAT ACCELERATOR, ARE…WE…CLEAR? I DID NOT SAY THAT!”

My driver, Rhys, found my panicked response rather amusing. And for the record, he does know how to drive fast.

Now all I need to do is save up to buy one of these. Or marry Rhys. I’m sure Chris won’t mind.

This week’s question is taken from the book “If², 500 Questions for the Game of Life“ by Evelyn McFarlane and James Saywell;

If you were to pick a city whose character best represents your own personality, which would you choose?

I would say the city that best represents my personalty is Ashgabat. Yep, Ashgabat. In case you don’t know where that is, it’s the capital of Turkmenistan. In case you don’t know where THAT is, it’s the country between Iran and Uzbekistan in Central Asia. A hot tourist destination for sure.

Why’d I choose Ashgabat?

Well first of all, it sounds cool. And we all know how cool I am.

Secondly, few people would know where the hell it is. I’m told I’m hard to locate on accounts that my mobile phone (ie cell phone) usually has a flat battery and is in the bottom of a drawer somewhere. I also have the directional capability of a tree stump and so am frequently lost.

Thirdly, it’s just plain weird, as evidenced by;

• Ashgabat has more hotel rooms than the average number of tourists for the whole country annually (I’m pretty sure the total number of hotel rooms they’d have would be about 7).
• Former president (Saparmurat Niyazov) felt it quite fitting to have countless gold statues of himself erected all around Ashgabat, had the world’s largest carpet of his effigy created and outlawed long hair, beards, opera and ballet.
• Central Asia’s largest artificial lake is being built near Ashgabat in the middle of the Karakum Desert, which covers most of Turkmenistan. The purpose of the lake, (current cost estimated at 10 billion dollars), is unknown (I’d guess camel swimming races).

Sums me up pretty well I think.

So which city best reflects your personality? Guatemala? Las Vegas? Boogertown?

Recently, Jeanne from Dream A Happy Life included little ole mwa in a list of her 10 favourite blogs. The ego in me said, “Woohoo! I made the list! I made the list! I made the list!” The other inordinately more pleasant, less raucaus and far more humble part of me was honoured.

If you haven’t already, you really should head on over to Dream A Happy Life and say hi to Jeanne. If you wish to be a wise, happy, peaceful individual living your dreams, you’ll find her an inspiration.

Part of Jeanne’s Ten Favourites post included a “passing the torch” element. She issued the challenge to those who made the list to name ten favourite things and ten favourite blogs. I like a challenge so here goes…

Ten Favourite Things

In no particular order;

1. Spending time with those close to me.
2. A BBQ at the beach with family.
3. Cuddling a puppy or patting a horse.
4. Laughing my arse off.
5. Trying something new.
6. A movie, blanket and glass of wine when it’s raining.
7. The smell of lemon scented eucalyptus leaves (and horses. Yep, horses).
8. Bear hugs.
9. The Canadian Rockies.
10. Good times with great friends.

It was seriously difficult to name just ten so here are my other ten favourite things…

1. Sunrises and sunsets.
2. Paddling in, looking at and floating in water.
3. Beach camping trips.
4. Traveling.
5. Giving
6. Live music.
7. Reading.
8. Carrot cake.
9. Inappropriate conversation and jokes around the dinner table.
10. Surprises (giving and receiving).

Ten Favourite Blogs

This wasn’t easy either but here they are, in no particular order…

Jane Be Nimble: Jane is actually Lori. Lori has a passion for staying nimble, both in mind and body. She is funny as hell, has a bent for science, needs treatment for an unhealthy level of love for lichen and likes to drop words like “sternocleidomastoid”, “panglossian” and “effulgence”. She’s one of a kind and has a Phar Lap sized heart.

Operation NICE: Melissa’s blog Operation NICE is all about spreading the niceness. Her belief is that kindness can change the world and her mission is to spread the concept of being nice. Nice stories, nice news, nice giveaways and nice assignments abound. A place I visit for a pick me up and shot of inspiration.

Jannie Funster: Jannie sings for beer and donuts. And this pretty much sums up her hilarious blog. She’s as funny as they come. Don’t drink your coffee while reading her posts or you might inadvertently snort it through your nose when you laugh out loud at her antics. Run by the ever efficient (even if he can’t spell) Blue Bunny Manigemints, Jannie Funster is a total crack up!

The Jungle of Life: Lance is a wise, caring, giving soul as evidenced by his blog, The Jungle of Life. The Jungle is where I find my weekly dose of insight, inspiration and thought provoking gems on this thing we call life. Lance could be considered the Dalai Lama of the West.

Joy Rebel: Brandi is a talented photographer. She’s also started a movement, or rather a rebellion. It’s a rebellion against negativity, mundaneness (I think I just made up another word) and fallacy. She suggests that instead, we find the beauty, spread the love and become joyful.

Positively Present: Dani has spent most of her life living with a negative attitude. In 2009 she decided to turn it around, and so was born Positively Present. Since then, she’s been on a mission to live positively and in the present moment. What she’s achieved in a short time is phenomenal and could be considered a poster child for changing those parts of yourself that aren’t working.

Quest for Balance: As the name of her blog suggests, Lisis is on a personal quest to find the balance between the things she needs to do and the things she wants to do. She’s a firecracker and has great wit, courage and huge generosity. She’s not afraid to speak her mind and tell it like it is. Dr Phil would be proud.

Happy Lotus: Nadia is all about spirit. Spirit in the spirited sense and spirit in the soul sense. Her musings on life, peacefulness, spirituality and happiness are thought provoking and deep but still fun and at times, funny. She oozes love at every turn.

Escape Adulthood: Jason and Kim have made it their life’s purpose to help us return to the “carefree days of childhood”. Adultitis is their foe and dreams, passion and playfulness their antidote. Escape Adulthood reminds me to have fun and not take life too seriously.

Dream A Happy Life!: And then there’s Jeanne. In Jeanne’s own words, she’s an “intrepid dreamer, sharing [her] thoughts and experiences about this happy life we all seek.” When she’s not traveling the countryside in her RV, she’s in the garden or imparting her wisdom. Jeanne is living the dream.

So there you have it, a few of my favourites. For those of you who made the list and whose ego just went a little berko (Aussie for berserk), feel free to pass the torch on.

Drum roll please….

Dut ta da daaaaaaaa…

May I present the first goal to be ticked off the Daisy List for 2010; Number 80: Gold Class Movie Night. Yes, I know, it’s hard not to be immensely impressed.

For the uninitiated, “Gold Class” is not just your run of the mill cinema experience. It’s the luxury version. The penthouse equivalent.

First off there’s the lounge where you are separated from the plebs and casually, yet regally sit back waiting to enter your cinema…

Complete with it’s own bar…

Just prior to the commencement of your cinema experience, a regal looking gentlemen regally announces that your movie is about to commence and would we kindly and regally make our way to our designated, large and regal recliner chairs…

At a set time, as ascertained by you, a beverage (I chose champagne on accounts of its regalness) and whichever culinary delight you decide to order off the menu, are delivered…regally.

Now, only the most special, sophisticated and affluent people get to experience Gold Class on accounts the tickets are $37 each. Given I was having a very unregal bad hair day and the fact that we took photos…with a flash…it was quite clear we are unaccustomed to such regalness.

Oh yeah, and the glasses weren’t our attempt at sophistication, rather they were a requirement of the movie we saw – Avatar 3D. We chose the movie predominantly based on its length (the longer the movie, the more time in Gold Class) and the fact that it was 3D, hence the glasses.

3D glasses have come a long way. I was expecting the cardboard type with one blue lens and one red one. These must be the regal version.

Melissa from Operation NICE came up with this month’s Random Acts of Kick Arse theme, and she chose gratitude.

You know, this is our 5th month since starting the RAOKA Crusade and I’ve noticed a theme. At the beginning of each month, I tend to think to myself, “OK Sami, how the hell are you going to spread [insert theme] this month. Pretty much every time, I say back to myself, “I don’t know. Can we go have a rum and ginger beer now?”

Despite the voices and the consumption of rum and ginger beer, every month, the “how” just comes knocking. I’m rapidly learning to just go have a rum and ginger beer and let life, and the theme, unfold as it should.

This month was slightly different in that there was something I’d been meaning to do but hadn’t gotten around to it. The “something” fitted perfectly with this month’s theme so I was a little more proactive with this particular task. As for the rest, well, let’s just say, the rum and ginger beer came in handy!

RAOKA 1: The Lost Art of Letter Writing

For a while now I’ve wanted to write a letter to both, my parents and Chris’. We have to be two of the luckiest people on the planet to have the parents we do. You would have more chance finding a brain cell in a block of cement than finding better folks than ours.

I felt it was high time I told them so.

Those who know me are aware that in my world, efficiency is highly prized. Writing a letter is not efficient. Apart from the time it takes to write it, address the envelope, find a stamp and post it, it also takes time for the receiver to decipher my chicken scrawl handwriting.

However, with efficiency, in communication anyway, comes a certain lack of personalness (and yes, I did just make that word up). In light of this, and despite the onset of Repetitive Strain Injury post letter writing, I sent my letters containing all the reasons I’m grateful to have them in my life.

RAOKA 2: The Currency of Beer

Some time ago, I wrote about discovering our newly bought car, who we’d named Bluey…

…was indeed mostly a lemon. We have just sold it. It was not without the help of a local mechanic who moved heaven and earth (or rather, other customers’ jobs) to fix it’s lemonness and provide a safety certificate so the sale would go through.

He really did go above and beyond the call of duty to get it sorted for us. To express my gratitude, I rocked up with a couple of ice cold beers…and $800 for the f****** repairs. He greatly appreciated both.

Oh yeah, and I’m also grateful for the couple who bought Bluey. So you know, I made them aware of his lemonness but they still wanted to go ahead with the sale. I would make the worst car salesperson ever because I simply cannot (and don’t want to) lie.

RAOKA 3: Symo, You Rock!

I have deep gratitude for all my friends and over the years I’ve let them know that in various ways. There is one friend however, that I realised I hadn’t really communicated this with. What better time to do it than now.

His name is Symo (a nickname by the way).

And a more loyal friend you will not find. Whether it’s cooking dinner, grabbing a lift, supporting my latest project, taking me water skiing, forwarding my blog, fixing a computer or a myriad of other things, Symo has always been a first class friend. Generosity is his middle name.

So Symo, I hope you’re reading this because you rock my friend! I’m grateful to call you a mate. Thank you for all the good times, support and friendship over the years. xxx

RAOKA 4: I am Grateful For…

This month also saw me start writing in my gratitude journal again.

I’ve used this journal in the past to help me identify what I’m grateful for whilst going through tough times. My thought; Why not use it when times are great too? This month was a perfect time to crack it open again.

RAOKA 4: To You, The LL&L Community

And then there’s you lot; the crazy, funny, supportive, caring, exceedingly brilliant community around Life, Laughs & Lemmings. Without you, my words, Flashdancing and rants would be nothing but an echo reverberating in the Internet chasm (some would argue they’d be better served as echoes!). As a token of my gratitude, I have written a poem in your honour;

To all the folks that visit here,
From some places far and others quite near,
A big thank you from me for taking the time,
To read prose, watch me dance and hear me whine.

Your comments and quips amuse me no end,
Especially when, and let’s not pretend,
I speak mostly shit and oh yeah, tend to cuss.
How I manage a G rating is anyone’s guess.

Nevertheless you come by and pay me a visit,
Not in your droves but that’s how I like it.
The connections and community is what makes this fun.

If you had to name the best live musical performance you have ever attended, which would you pick?

For me, I’d say seeing the John Butler Trio live at an outdoor venue called Riverstage, which is, yep, a stage by a river, the Brisbane River to be exact (Brisbane City Council are a creative bunch aren’t they?).

I’ve written before about the John Butler Trio. Not only do they sound as good live as they do recorded but they use their music, their fame and their moolah to make the world a better place.

Nope, no flashy bling for JBT. No diva-type demands or 30 person strong entourage either. Just 3 gifted musicians, doing what they love with a focus on giving back.

Riverstage is a perfect venue for JBT. The stage is at the bottom of a hill in the middle of Brisbane with the river behind it. All that is required is to find a patch of grass, lay out the picnic blanket and make yourself comfortable. It was a night I’ll always remember for great fun with friends, unbelievable music and a fantastic energy.

Today is Australia Day.

There is a reason it’s Australia Day but as is typical for most of us Aussies, I can’t exactly remember what that reason is. I think it has something to do with the First Fleet arriving on our shores many moons ago to dump off all the convicts from Great Britain (not what you’d call an illustrious start for a country but a start nonetheless)!

If I was any sort of patriot (or professional blogger) I’d find out, but truthfully, I couldn’t be arsed. I know, I know, this is horribly lazy of me. I have no excuse except that I have a cold beverage and a not as cold pool waiting with my name on it…and I’m horribly lazy. We also have friends coming over soon for the obligatory BBQ and I have to clean the gunge from the last gathering off the BBQ plate.

In order to celebrate Australia Day (and add to the rumour that Australians are typically fairly wacko), let me present the Definitive Guide to Being an Aussie (sent to me via email), complete with translations for those of you from other parts.

1. The shorter the nickname, the more an Aussie likes you.
2. Whether it’s the opening of Parliament, or the launch of a new art gallery, there is no Australian event that cannot be improved by a sausage sizzle.
3. If the bloke next to you is swearing like a wharfie (labourer who loads and unloads vessels in a port) he’s probably a media billionaire. Or on the other hand, he may be a wharfie.
4. There is no food that cannot be improved by the application of tomato sauce (ie ketchup).
5. On the beach, all Australians hide their keys and wallets by placing them inside their sandshoes. No thief has ever worked this out.
6. All our best heroes are losers.
7. The alpha male in any group is he who takes the barbecue tongs from the hands of the host and blithely begins turning the snags (ie sausages).
8. It’s not summer until the steering wheel is too hot to hold.
9. It is proper to refer to your best friend as “a total bastard”. By contrast, your worst enemy is “a bit of a bastard”.
10. If it can’t be fixed with pantyhose and fencing wire, it’s not worth fixing.
11. The most popular and widely praised family in any street is the one that has the swimming pool (this is so true. Our pooless neighbours currently have pool envy).
12. The phrase “we’ve got a great lifestyle” means everyone in the family drinks too much.
13. If invited to a party, you should take cheap red wine and then spend all night drinking the host’s beer (don’t worry, he’ll have catered for it).
14. You believe all famous Kiwis (ie New Zealanders) are actually Australian, until they stuff up, at which point they again become Kiwis.
15. You know, despite what the tourist books say, that no one says “cobber” (and despite, Australia, the movie, no one says “shut your damper hole”. And while I’m at it, no one “throws a shrimp on the barbie” either. We barbeque prawns, people! Prawns!)
16. You know what it’s like to swallow a fly, on occasions via your nose.
17. You get choked up with emotion by the first verse of the national anthem and then have trouble remembering the second.
18. The phrase “a simple picnic” is not known. You should take everything you own. If you don’t need to make three trips back to the car, it’s not a real picnic.
19. When you hear that an American ‘roots for his team’ you wonder how often and with whom (ie in Australia, “roots” means…well…something else).
20. On picnics, the Esky (ie cooler/chilly bin) is always too small, creating a food versus grog battle that can only ever be resolved by leaving the salad at home.
21. You understand that the phrase “a group of women wearing black thongs” refers to footwear and may be less alluring than it sounds.
22. You can translate: “Dazza and Shazza played Acca Dacca on the way to Maccas” (ie translation: Darren and Sharon played AC/DC on the way to McDonalds).
23. When on a country holiday, the neon sign advertising the motel’s pool will always be slightly larger than the pool itself.
24. You’ve made a bong out of your garden hose rather than use it for something illegal such as watering the garden (ie you’re not allowed to water the garden due to drought).
25. There comes a time in every Australian’s life when they realise that the Aeroguard (ie famous brand of mosquito spray) is worse than the mozzies (ie mosquitoes).
26. And, finally, the true test for immigration to Australia; Potential new Aussies must pass the following test:

Mow a sloping lawn (at least 20 degree angle) in a pair of thongs (ie flip flops) holding a VB (ie beer) while watching the cricket.

If you can’t pass that, chances are you will never be able to pass yourself off as an Aussie.

Upon reading the list, I realise this doesn’t exactly show us in a good light. Still, it’s not surprising. We are all descendants of convicts after all!

For the Aussies amongst us, may your day be filled with good cheer, great friends and much pondering of what you’re actually celebrating. For everyone else, feel free to have a meat pie and tomato sauce in our honour (or Vegemite on toast if you’re game)!
