Robyn, a swedish pop singer gets the crowd dancing. Wow, a fun fun set. Her electro-pop combined with her highly energetic dancing got everyone jumping and dancing, despite the intense heat. She has very catrchy electro beats which I think most would find themselves dancing to.

You can watch her perform Fembots. Occasionally you can glimpse me on stage (on your left) with my goofy white hat.

Sharon Van Etten opened the Pitchfork Music Festival 2010. WOW. What a voice and what a great set. I have to hand it to her. Standing up on the massive stage, alone, a girl with a guitar, playing to a large crowd takes some guts. She did an incredible job and I’ll be keeping my eyes and ears out for more from her. She kept a sense of humor when she broke a string and didn’t waiver when handed a replacement loaner guitar whose strap was obviously much too long.

Pitchfork Music Festival opened earlier this year, starting the day at 3:30 instead of 5:30, allowing for more bands, and for the first time, a night of comedy on the Balance stage.

Crowd surfing during Pitchfork Music Festival 2010

Another year of Pitchfork Music Festival is in the books. It was a stellar year once again. The only downside was the oppressive heat and humidity. Seriously, 10 hours shooting in 100 degrees is exhausting. I can’t imagine being one of the artists, jumping around on stage in that heat, or a fan packed in all day. Despite the heat, the energy level of the artists was incredible. I’m not sure how they do it, but they put their all into each performance and everyone put on fantastic crazy sets.

As a music photographer, I get to photograph many different bands. Some are exciting, some are interesting, and some just stand at their mic and sing. Sometimes I love the music, and sometimes I don’t. It’s always much more fun when I’m a fan of the music. Of all the bands I’ve photographed in my career, I’d have to say The Flaming Lips is possible the most fun and exciting shoot ever. It’s like the circus comes to town, with confetti canons, massive colored balloons, strange psychedelic light show, dancers dressed in various costumes, and of course, the charismatic Wayne Coyne as the Ring master. And if that isn’t enough, the fans are crazy fun, in their elaborate costumes.

OK, so I need to get back on the blogging wagon. Life has been busy, I’ve been traipsing around the world taking photographs of amazing people and have left the blog to suffer of loneliness. So, before I start trying to catch up on the last few months of life, work, and travels, I’ll start again with my Music Monday. Today’s artist is Bffy Clyro, a Scottish rock band trio from Ayrshire. These guys rock. I mean, they really rock. FLying hair, writhing bodies, make you want to jump until your heart wont let you jump any more kind of rock.

These lads have been around for awhile but are just now starting to get a bit more following here in the USA> If you haven’t checked them out live, definitely do so. Tey are currently touring with Manchester Orchestra (who also rocks!).

I know I’ve been slack in updating this blog. This post is not about that, nor is it filled with promises. There are no images to look at or funny stories to tell. Today is about a beautiful person, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer this morning. She fought long and hard against that monster, and worked hard to help further the knowledge and fight for all those who will follow her in this epic battle. She was a beautiful person and her spark will live on in all those she inspired and loved.

From the words of Frank Turner, We live to dance another day, just now we have to dance for one more of us.
So for Lisa, I raise my glass and my voice, as I let go with my hands but not my heart.

I’ve decided to start a regular feature here on the blog called Music Monday, where I will feature a musical artist, usually someone I’m loving at the moment, or someone I think you should know about. Im a music junky. itunes giftcards are like crack to me. I love Tuesdays, the traditional day (in USA) for new albums to be released. I’m always into talking about music and if you have a recommendation for me, someone to check out, definitely let me know. I love finding new music! If you’re a musician, send me a link to your website so I can check out your music.

I debated about who I should feature on the first Music Monday. Should it be something new, just released, or something that’s been on repeat on my ipod? I decided to start out with an amazing artist and the most gorgeous of songs. This week’s featured artist, Bon Iver (pronounced boʊniˈvɛr), is driven by the singer/songwriter of Justin Vernon. He self-released the debut album For Emma, Forever Ago in July 2007, which was later released on the Jagjaguwar label in February 2008. Since the CD’s release, Michael Noyce, Sean Carey, and Matthew McCaughan have been added to the line-up. The music is stunning, sometimes sparse, but always moving. The whole CD is beautiful and was in my Top Ten Albums of 2008. This is a gorgeous CD; it moved me and I hope it moves you as well. I’d have to say that Re: Stacks has got to be one of the top ten songs of the naughties, at least for me. It’s incredibly moving, and stops me in my tracks when I hear it. The whole CD is filled with gorgeous music, but today I’ll share Re: Stacks.

Oh the joys of getting a haircut, especially when you’re 3 years old. You’d think it was the most painful activity in the world. Tears were shed with lots of whimpering, but in the end, the lollipop saves the day. Wouldn’t it be nice if life remained this simple, where a single lollipop can make the world feel right and happy again?

Frank turner performed a great set at The Fillmore in Charlotte NC Friday night. He was supporting the celtic-punk band Flogging Molly and won the audience over by the end of his set. That’s no small task for a support band but Turner has a way fo connecting with the audience. This was the first time I was able to hear Turner with his full band. Stellar. Incredible musicians and a full band has filled the songs and given them great depth. If you are unfamiliar with Frank Turner, check out his site and his music.
