MS-Optical Perar Super Triplet 28mm F/4 lens

I have covered the MS Super Triplet Perar 3.5/35 Mark II lens on this blog in the past, but I was not aware that there is also a 28mm f/4 version until I came across this listings on japancamerahunter.com:

This lens has been produced after over a year of research by Miyazaki san, and he has learned a lot about how to overcome problems that he faced with previous models of the perar he produced. The lens will be produced in batches, the first batch being of 180 lenses.

Specs:

Triplet Formula lens with high optical stability
Ultra compact and lightweight, only 45grams (55 grams with the hood)
Triplet design with 3 elements in 3 groups for refined sharpness
Premium multicoated lens with a 97% light transmission rate
10 blade aperture diaphragm with smooth selection for a clean bokeh effect:Minimum focal distance of 0.8m
Unique exposed front aperture element

Leica M cameras: change from vulcanite to leatherette cladding

M9-P with current “Vulcanite” cladding. M9-P with new leatherette cladding.

Leica Camera will be changing the Leica M camera leatherette cladding for several M cameras. The following M cameras will now have a leatherette cladding as opposed to the previous vulcanite cladding:

10703 Leica M9-P, black paint finish
10704 Leica M9, black paint finish
10716 Leica M9-P, silver chrome finish
10360 Leica MP à la carte, if the option “Vulcanite” is selected
10560 Leica M7 à la carte, if the option “Vulcanite” is selected

Leica is making this change as the “Vulcanite” material is no longer available. After extensive quality control tests, Leica has selected this particular leatherette cladding for the black Leica M 9, the black and silver Leica M9-P, the Leica MP a la carte and Leica M7 a la carte. The leatherette differs from the “Vulcanite” used up to now. The new leatherette cladding is slightly softer with a flatter surface embossing and a more matte finish. The change will be implemented during serial production, meaning that the first cameras with the leatherette cladding will be delivered shortly.

Is Leica impacted by the recent developments at Kodak?

Several readers asked me about the future of the M9 and S2 cameras since they use Kodak sensors and the company recently filed fot chapter 11 bankruptcy. First, last year Kodak sold their sensor division and Leica can still get their sensors from the new owner Platinum Equity. Second, I believe that Leica will go with a Sony CMOS sensor for the M9 replacement at Photokina and the old Kodak sensor may be needed for just few more months of M9/M9-P production.

For all film users: Kodak's film division is still profitable.

In conclusion, I basically do not see Kodak's bankruptcy filing to impact Leica's business in any way.

Two new Leica cameras at Photokina 2012

DSLR Magazine, who has a pretty good track record when it comes to "predicting" upcoming products, posted on Twitter that Leica is working on two new cameras for Photokina and one of them will have a "reasonable" price tag (for Leica's standards).

My interpretation of this statement is a new Leica M10 and a new mirrorless system which was recently mentioned on several occasions by Leica executives. The new camera system is expected to have at least an APS-C sized sensor and will probably be compatible with Leica R lenses.

Leica Camera AG: main shareholder sets cash compensation for squeeze-out at EUR 30,18

Leica Camera AG sets cash compensation for squeeze-out at EUR 30,18 in order to get a small portion (2.44%) of stock owned by third party shareholders. Here is the full press-release:

Lisa Germany Holding GmbH, Wetzlar, directly holds approx. 97.56 % (= 16,096,478 no- par value shares) of the share capital of Leica Camera AG.

In accordance with § 327a of the German Stock Corporation Act (Aktiengesetz), Lisa Germany Holding GmbH informed Leica Camera AG on November 4, 2011 that it re- quests that the company's general meeting shall resolve upon the shares of the minority shareholders being transferred to Lisa Germany Holding GmbH in exchange for an ap- propriate cash compensation.

Lisa Germany Holding GmbH has now confirmed and specified this request. In a letter dated today, it requests from the Board of Management of Leica Camera AG that the company's general meeting shall resolve upon the shares of the minority shareholders being transferred to Lisa Germany Holding GmbH in exchange for a cash compensation of EUR 30,18 per no-par value share.

The amount of EUR 30,18 determined by Lisa Germany Holding GmbH is in keeping with the result of a business valuation of Leica Camera AG by auditing firm PKF Issing Faul- haber Wozar Altenbeck GmbH Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft, Wurzburg, Germany.

As published in the Ad-hoc Announcement dated November 4, 2011 Leica Camera AG and Lisa Germany Holding GmbH intend the conclusion of a domination and profit trans- fer agreement with Leica Camera AG as the dependent company and Lisa Germany Hold- ing GmbH as the dominating company. In the business valuation the appropriate com- pensation to be paid according to § 305 of the German Stock Corporation Act has been determined at EUR 30,18 per share, the gross amount of the recurring annual cash pay- ment to be paid according to § 304 German Stock Corporation Act has been determined at EUR 1,83 per share. The Boards of Leica Camera AG have not taken a decision yet as to the conclusion of the domination and profit transfer agreement and its contents.

Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2012 competition now open

Entries now being accepted for annual Leica photography competition

16 January 2012: Leica Camera AG has announced that entries are now being accepted for the 2012 Oskar Barnack Award. Photographers interested in submitting entries can apply from now until 1 March 2012. Full details, entry criteria and terms and conditions can be found at www.leica-oskar-barnack-award.com.

The Leica Oskar Barnack Award will be presented for the 33rd time this year. The winner will receive a Leica M9-P camera with lens worth approximately €10,000 in addition to a cash prize of €5,000. A further prize will be awarded – the ‘Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award’ – for (prospective) professional photographers aged 25 and under. The winner of this section will also be awarded a Leica M9-P complete with lens.

The members of this year’s international jury include: Bruce Gilden, Magnum photographer, Stephan Erfurt, Director of C/O Berlin, Valérie Fougeirol, Creative Director of the Magnum Gallery in Paris, Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, Artistic Director of the Leica Galerie in Salzburg and Brigitte Schaller, Art Director of Leica Fotografie International magazine.

The awards will be presented in the course of the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie photography festival to be held in Arles, France from 2 to 8 July 2012.

Leica Noctilux DOF scale

The press image of the Leica Noctilux 50mm f/0.95 lens (on the left) that is also uploaded on Leica's website has the incorrect DOF scale. If the lens is set to infinity, the f/16 mark should point at 5 meters and not 10 meters. As you can see from the table bellow, the DOF in this case should be around 5 meters:

Leica Camera USA confirmed that their press image was taken of a prototype or produced from a computer rendering. If you own the Noctilux, there is no need to worry - your lens is not defective.

Yes, Fuji will release a M-mount adapter for the X-Pro 1

I just received an answer to my question from two days ago - soon you will able to use your Leica M lenses on the upcoming Fuji X-Pro 1 mirrorless camera. Fuji will announce their own M-mount adapter for the X-Pro 1. The camera will also have two optical magnification options: x0.37 for wider lenses and x0.60 for other lenses.

The mirrorless Fuji X-PPO 1 camera leaked on Wells Fargo's website and Responses Photo magazine. It will be interesting to see if a third party company will produce a Leica M-mount lens adapter for the X-PPO 1. Does anyone see a technical reason why such adapter is not feasible?
