In the following lesson, you will learn how to play the Gsus4 chord for guitar (also known as G Suspended 4th). This is an advanced lesson and will demonstrate, with the use of the chord charts below, how to play several advanced voicings of this chord.

Let’s first talk about some of the theory behind the construction of this particular chord. This chord is built from the G Major Scale.

The G Major Scale contains the following notes: G A B C D E F#

The notes that we need for the Gsus4 chord are in the above scale. So, in order to find those notes, we need to apply a little formula. That formula is: 1,4 5. This simply means that we take the 1st, 4th and 5th steps of the G Major Scale to form our chord. Those notes are G, C and D.

Gsus4 notes again: G, C and D

Suspended 4th chords are one of my favorite types of chords to play. They have such a wonderful sound to them. The only difference between the Gsus4 and G Major chord is that we are “Suspending”or replacing the 3rd with a 4th, in other words, we are replacing the “B” of the G Major with a “C” in this particular case.

Here is a key that will help you read the charts:

Everything on the above chart should be self explanatory, except for the last three in the third column. They may need a bit of explaining. The O, or open symbol, simply means that you do not press down on any notes on that string. The X means you do not strum that particular string. The Barre symbol means you need to barre that particular fret. When you barre a fret you are pressing down on multiple strings at the same time with one finger.

Chord Playing Tip

Be sure that you are pressing down on the strings hard enough and play each string one at a time to make sure you have a nice clean sound. If any of the strings buzz or sound muted, then something is not right.

To construct this chord, we need to take a look at the F# Scale: F#, G#, A#, B, C#, D#, and E#. We are going to need 4 notes from this scale. To find these notes, we apply the formula: 1,3,5 and b7. This means that we take the 1st, 3rd, 5th and flattened 7th positions of the F# Scale, or the notes: F#, A#, C# and E.

The Dm7 is a beautiful sounding chord and often used in jazz guitar. You are welcome to scroll right down to the chord charts below or stick around for a little theory on how this chord is formed.

We must first look at the D Major Scale: D, E, F#, G, A, B, and C#. All the notes needed to play our Dm7 chord can be found in this scale. All we need to do is apply the following handy formula to this scale to find our notes. That formula is: 1, b3, 5 and b7. This gives us the notes: D, F, A and C. The “b3″ symbol means that we take the 3rd step of the D Major Scale and flatten it by 1/2 step. When we do this, our “F#” note becomes an “F”. The “b7″ symbol is essentially the same only we are doing it to the 7th note in the scale, so our “C#” becomes a “C”.

I have included 4 different versions of this chord below. This is definitely not an easy chord to finger if you are a beginner. It involves advanced techniques like Barre Chords and string muting. Good Luck!

Let’s learn how to play the D Dominant 7th Guitar Chord shall we? This chord is often referred to as a “Blues” Chord. When you first play it, you will quickly understand why. It’s a wonderful sounding chord and definitely one you should add to your chord library. This lesson will teach you several advanced voicings of this chord. Follow this link for an easy version of the D7 guitar chord.

If you would like to learn how to play this chord right now, you can scroll down to the chord charts below. If you would like to learn a bit of theory behind this chord first, then read on.

This chord is formed from the D Major Scale: D E F# G A B C#. As you can see, there are 7 notes found in this scale. In order to find the notes that make up the D Dominant 7 Chord, we need to use the following formula: 1, 3, 5, b7. This means that we take the 1st, 3rd, 5th and b7 steps of the D Major Scale above, or the notes: D, F#, A and C. The “b7″ symbol means that we take the 7th step of this scale (C#) and we flatten it by 1/2 step giving us our “C” note.

The notes of the D7 Chord again are: D F# A C.

Here is a key that will help you read the chart:

Everything on the above chart should be self explanatory, except for the last three in the third column. They may need a bit of explaining. The Barre symbol means you need to barre that particular fret. When you barre a fret you are pressing down on multiple strings at the same time with one finger.

This second D7 chord is technically a chord inversion because the D note is no longer the bass note or lowest pitch. The A note now becomes the bass note. It is still referred to as a D7 chord though. If you play it, you will notice it sounds just like the D7 chord.

Chord Playing Tip: Be sure that you are pressing down on the string hard enough. You should play each string one at a time to make sure you have a nice clean sound. If any of the strings buzz or sound muted, then something is not right.
