Tasly Biopharma pitches long-awaited IPO — will it trigger another $1B gold rush on HKEX?

In the run up to the Hong Kong stock exchange’s anticipated rule change — opening the door for Chinese pre-revenue biotechs to go public closer to home — more than a year ago, Tasly Biopharma was one of the big players whose rumored interest helped stoke enthusiasm for the new listing venue. The company has since kept the drumroll rumbling in the background, raising a pre-IPO round and convincing partner Transgene to swap ownership in a joint venture for equity. Now the other shoe has finally dropped as execs outline plans for a pipeline dominated by cardiovascular drugs.

As is standard practice, Tasly did not pin a figure on their pitch, though previous reports have suggested goals around $1 billion — the amount that Hansoh Pharma, another domestic powerhouse, has fetched in its recent IPO.

Formerly known as Shanghai Tasly, the company was launched in 2001 when its parent decided to leverage its well-known Chinese medicine brand and entrenched market position for a pivot to the modern pharma business.

And unlike some of its biotech peers on the HKEX, Tasly is a revenue-booking operation. Thanks to a recombinant human kinase product — dubbed pro-UK, approved in 2011 for blood-clot induced heart attacks — it made around $35 million (RMB 240 million) last year.

Tasly clearly sees potential in the market. In addition to envisioning pro-UK as a blockbuster thrombolytic drug in China, it’s also lined up two more drugs with the same mechanism of action as its late-stage favorites. B1140, in Phase III, is designed to treat acute ischemic stroke; B1448, meanwhile, is under Phase II testing for acute pulmonary embolism.

But Tasly’s team of 96 researchers are not limiting themselves to the cardio space.

Oncology/autoimmune and alimentary tract/metabolism represent the two other big areas it would like to focus on. And in the IPO filing Tasly highlighted SY101, an EGFR-targeted drug, which they are positioning for colorectal cancer. Erbitux and Avastin are the only biologics on the market for this indication, they point out, and their Phase I drug appears competitive on both efficacy and safety fronts.

The rest of the pipeline casts a wide net, with targets ranging from hepatitis B and type 2 diabetes to NASH and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Some of these projects, including SY101, are developed at Tasly’s Shanghai Saiyuan and Transgene Tasly subsidiaries.

Kaijing Yan, the son of Tasly founder Xijun Yan, has largely taken over the family business, which controls the biotech company via a 90%-plus stake. Transgene, Pudong Science and Technology and prominent VC group Ally Bridge each claims a single-digit percentage of shares.

EA Pharma Signed a License Agreement with TASLY PHARMACEUTICAL GROUP for Secondary Hyperparathyroidism Treatment AJT240

EA Pharma Co., Ltd. (President, Yuji Matsue; Headquarters, Tokyo, Japan) (hereinafter “EA Pharma”), the gastrointestinal disease area subsidiary of Eisai Co., Ltd., announced today that EA Pharma signed a license agreement with TASLY PHARMACEUTICAL GROUP (President, YAN Kaijing ; Headquarters, Tianjin, People’s Republic of China) (hereinafter “TASLY”) to grant TASLY the exclusive rights to develop and market a secondary hyperparathyroidism treatment agent (Code: AJT240) in People’s Republic of China, including the Hong Kong Special Administration Region and Macau Special Administration Region for patients receiving hemodialysis.

Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is one of the complications that occurs with progression of chronic renal disease (chronic renal failure). In SHPT, the parathyroid glands excessively secrete parathyroid hormone (PTH). Excessive PTH promotes efflux of phosphorus and calcium from bone into the blood. This increases the risk of bone fracture or causes deposition of phosphorus and calcium salts in non-bone tissues, i.e., ectopic calcification, which leads to bone pain, joint pain and other symptoms. Particularly, there has been reported that, when the deposition occurs in the cardiovascular system, the risk of cardiovascular diseases including arteriosclerosis increases and even can affect prognosis.

AJT240 directly acts on the calcium-sensing receptor expressed on the cell membrane of parathyroid glands and suppresses the excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone. AJT240 is an intravenous injection that can be administered through the dialysis circuit intravenously after a dialysis session. This is expected improve medication adherence of patients receiving maintenance dialysis and reduce the gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting and the like that are observed in treatment with existing oral SHPT drugs.

The above license granted to TASLY will contribute to fulfillment of unmet medical needs of patients with SHPT receiving hemodialysis in People’s Republic of China, number of which has been increasing year by year.

Accra, May 23, GNA - Kasly Health Industries, manufacturers of modern Chinese traditional medicine, has given 12 saloon cars to its outstanding workers in Ghana and Nigeria at a colourful ceremony in Accra.

The company also awarded 21 workers with motorbikes while others took home laptop computers. In all winners took home items worth 1.1 billion cedis.

The awards slated for the West Africa Division of Kasly went to the categories of fast developing distributors, special contributions, top speciality and local staff performance.

Ms Ama Busia, Member of Council of State, said awarding exemplary performance was one important factor that differentiated successful organisations from non-performing ones adding that such recognition brought out the best in people.

She praised the Company for making significant contribution towards the enhancement of the health of many Ghanaians and creating wealth for thousands of its workers.

Ms Busia noted that the Government shared the objectives of Kasly since bringing quality healthcare to the vast majority of the people was a priority.

"Government realizing that the actualization of these priorities can best be achieve through a strategic partnership with private sector, has worked tirelessly to make Ghana an attractive investment destination and it is refreshing to note that Kasly chose Ghana as its first investment destination in West Africa.
