12.4 effective megapixels

The K-x incorporates a newly developed CMOS image sensor to assure high-speed image data readout and more flexibility with varying ISO sensitivity levels. With approximately 12.4 effective megapixels, this image sensor accurately reproduces true-to-life images with fine detail and rich color depth. The

K-x offers a wide sensitivity range between ISO 200 and ISO 6400 and allows users to expand the sensitivity range between ISO 100 and ISO 12800 via a custom function to offer greater creative freedom to photographers.

Compact, lightweight body

The PENTAX K-x is one of the most compact, lightweight digital SLR cameras in its class. The stainless-steel chassis and overall design offer a space-efficient layout.

Widescreen HD movie recording at 1280x720 pixels at a cinematic 24 frames per second (720p24)

The PENTAX K-x movie recording function*1 captures true-to-life movie clips in 16:9 high-definition TV proportions (1280 x 720 pixels) at a frame rate of 24 frames per second. Compatible with every PENTAX interchangeable lens ever made, the Video Capture mode opens a new world of creativity for PENTA K-x owners.

PENTAX-original SR mechanism for sharp, blur-free images

The K-x features the

PENTAX-developed Shake Reduction mechanism that effectively compensates for the adverse effects of camera shake by as much as four shutter steps. This innovative mechanism extends its benefits to all PENTAX interchangeable lenses — even those designed for film-format cameras.*2 With this SR mechanism, the K-x produces sharp, blur-free images even under demanding conditions such as telephoto lens photography, shooting in dark or low-light setting without a flash illumination, and sunset scenes.

High-speed continuous shooting at approximately 4.7 images per second

The K-x’s high-speed continuous shooting mode records as many as 17 images (in JPEG recording format) at a maximum speed of approximately 4.7 images per second. This is the fastest of all entry-class models. The K-x also features a more reliable shutter unit, which passed a demanding action test of more than 100,000 shutter releases. The top shutter speed of 1/6000 second allows the photographer to preserve sharp, crisp images of fast-moving subjects.

High-performance, high-speed PRIME II imaging engine

The K-x features the newly developed PRIME (PENTAX Real IMage Engine) II, that is an upgrade of the original PRIME imaging engine. This new imaging engine offers greater data processing speed and enhanced capability to produce higher-quality images with richer, more accurate color rendition, as well as faster transmission speed of movie data.

Live View function with Face detection of up to 16 faces

In addition to the camera’s viewfinder, the K-x features a Live View function that allows users to view subjects on the LCD monitor during shooting. The K-x also offers a choice of three different focusing modes in Live View:

Contrast Auto Focus optimizes the focus based on the subject’s contrast.

Face Detection

Auto Focus automatically detects up to 16 faces, then selects the main subject’s face from multiple faces, and captures it in sharp focus.

Phase Difference Auto Focus accesses the AF sensor positioned in the camera body to optimize focus on the subject.

Innovative Image Processing Functions

Digital Filter function

The K-x’s digital filter function allows users to process recorded images in a variety of creative ways within the camera and produce highly creative visual expressions. With a choice of 16 different filters including Color Extract, Retro, Soft, Starburst, Toy Camera, and more (including a custom filter for building multiple effects), photographers may apply multiple filters to a single image for customized effects.

Cross Process mode

The K-x features a new Cross Process mode that automatically and randomly adds finishing touches to exposures to create eye-catching images with unique, intriguing colors (just like images treated with Cross Process*3 in film photography). This mode adds a whimsical element to digital photography since photographers don’t know the results until the captured image is actually displayed on the camera’s LCD monitor.

High-precision 11-point AF sensor

The high-precision, wide-frame SAFOX VIII autofocus system of the K-x features 11 sensor points (with nine cross-type sensors positioned in the middle) to automatically capture even off-centered subjects in sharp, crisp focus. The Nintendo Wii makes use of special motion-sensitive controllers that allow you to swing a sword, throw a punch, or drive a car with a flick of the wrist rather than with the push of a button. The recent introduction of Wii MotionPlus increases the accuracy of motion control.

The good:Revolutionary controller design offers unique motion-sensitive gameplay options; built-in Wi-Fi delivers free online services and gameplay; Virtual Console has major nostalgia appeal; compatible with all GameCube games and controllers; built-in SD slot for storage and photo viewing; includes Wii Sports game; most affordable home game console.

The bad:Controller eats batteries and takes some time to get used to; online gaming and community features hobbled by horrible "friends code" system; nunchuk controller sold separately; lacks the advanced HD graphics and surround sound found on the Xbox 360 and the PS3; requires a wired receiver unit placed near the TV to interface with wireless controllers; can't play CDs or DVDs.

The bottom line:It lacks the graphical prowess and rich media features of the Xbox 360 and the PS3, but the Nintendo Wii's combination of unique motion-sensitive controllers and emphasis on fun gameplay make the ultra-affordable console hard to resist.

Toshiba has announced that it is entering into the pocket camcorder market with the launch of four new pocket camcorders ranging from £99 up to £179.

The flagship model will be the S10, which promises to be the size of a mobile phone, however still able to deliver 1080p resolution for recording high-def video.

The Camileo S10 will also feature a 2.5-inch screen, 4x digital zoom and a 5-megapixel sensor for snapping still images.

Storage options are either recording on to the camera's 128MB of built-in memory or to an SD card. It will cost £129.99 in the UK when it launches shortly.

There has been mumblings that Nikon was going to introduce a new, entry level DSLR to replace the aging D40/D60 lineup and that DSLR might just might launch next week at PMA. Besides the MP count, details really aren’t flowing but we’re hoping Nikon has a nice DSLR in the works.

Nikon Rumors, a good authority on everything Nikon btw, is stating that via a reliable source, the D5000 will be launched next week in Vegas. So far the only spec leaked is that the camera will be loaded with a 12.3 MP sensor which is in line with previous reports that the D5000’s image quality would be on par with the D90 who just so happens to also sport a 12.3 MP sensor. Nice.

Chances are though that this will not be the only entry level DSLR announced next week. Pentax just dropped the price on some of its models and Canon knows what they are doing. Next week should be a great time for camera fiends.

The D5000 seems to be a D40-like body with a D90/D300 class sensor and innards (Gen 2). If true, this will give this camera image quality indistinguishable from the D3 in a D40-weight-class body (proof: the D90's technical image quality is indistinguishable from the D3, and the D5000 ought to be the same as the D90).

The D5000 just might add new wireless capabilities beyond anything today.

Will the D5000 have the pro-grade 1/500 flash sync of the D40, which no other DSLR can match at any price? Probably not, which is too bad. The D40's 1/500 sync is why I prefer to use it for shooting portraits in daylight over other cameras; it lets me use flash much more effectively.

Lenovo IdeaPad S20 12" netbook coming soon...

Though bit late in the netbook game, Lenovo believes that netbooks are here to stay. To position itself better in the growing netbook segment the Chinese company has planned to launch a 12-inch netbook computer. The latest mini-laptop from the house of Lenovo will grace company's IdeaPad series and runs Intel's latest Atom N280 processor. According to reports, Lenovo hopes to break competition in the 10" segment with its 12-inch S20 netbook.

But as per its screen size it would be breaking Intel's unofficial law that states that a netbook shouldn't offer screen bigger than 10-inch. And for that it would have to pay a price. The processor for this machine will cost $10 higher.

The IdeaPad S20 netbook is based on an Intel Atom N280 processor and GN40 chipset, and runs Windows XP operating system. Expected pricing is around $586.

Nikon Coolpix P90 will release on March...

The Nikon Coolpix P90 is a promising looking new super zoom camera with a big zoom and the ability to take a lot of shots very quickly.

The P90 features a 24x optical zoom lens (equivalent of 26mm to 624mm), optical image stabilization, 3.0 inch LCD display (vari-angle to allow you to angle it up or down) and 12 megapixel image sensor.

The Nikon Coolpix P90 features 15 frames per second shooting (it will shoot at this rate for 45 shots in a row - it’ll even start recording images before you hit the shutter release when in sports mode!) as well as ISO of up to 6400. it also has motion detection (to detect if your subject is moving and automatic adjustment of the shutter speed and ISO to compensate). Xbox 540 coming in 2009?

It is said that the first batch of 65 nm GPUs for the popular Microsoft Xbox 360 are rolling of the production line and that the Xbox 360 consoles using the 65 nm technology is expected to start shipping this August, but what is more important are the rumors of a new refreshed Xbox 360 which is expected to hit in the fall of 2009.

The Xbox 540 will be using the Valhalla processor chip and is believed to be of a system on a chip design which will allow the gaming console to fit into a very slim case. This Xbox 360 is expected to ship with 65 nm package known as the Jasper platform this August and you the consumer will not notice the refresh, well that is unless MS decide to put a what is much needed a Blu-ray drive into the Xbox 360.

There is no obvious confirmation on this but are Asustek subsidiary Pegatron going to manufacture the normal and regular Xbox 360 or units with an integrated Blu-ray drive, this is something to ponder the mind. We do know that Celestica, Pegatron and Wistron will be pretty busy bunnies trying to push out millions of refreshed Xbox 360 consoles.

TSMC are planning on producing the Valhalla chip which will be a dramatic change and of course a visible one at that in where it will be the foundation of the mid-cycle refresh of the Xbox 360 and of course why it is called the Xbox 2.5 or the Xbox 540’ (360+180) in the fall of 2009. We think that TSMC will opt to use a 45 nm process for this Multi-Chip-Module package (CPU+GPU+eDRAM).

Nintendo introduced the newest member of the Nintendo DS family of products, Nintendo DSi. The DSi is the third version of the Nintendo DS handheld and is set for release later this year in Japan.

This new, svelte dual-screen portable (pictured below) was announced at a Nintendo Co. Ltd. press event. The DSi is slated to launch in Europe in the spring of 2009. To watch the English-language webcast of the event, check back soon for a link to the Nintendo of Japan website. Nintendo of Europe will also publish translated excerpts from the event in this space at a later time.

Even before Nintendo announced it, the DSi had been the talk of the town. According to our Japanese correspondent, the DSi will be 12 percent thinner, and will get rid of the GBA slot entirely. The DSi will also include two built-in cameras (one reportedly VGA resolution) and music playback. It will add an SD card slot and internal storage (we don't yet know how much) to enhance its multimedia capabilities. The screens are now slightly larger at 3.25 inches, photos can be synced to the Wii Photo Channel, and the unit will include a free browser application.

Nintendo is also launching the "DSi Shop" to sell content directly over Wi-Fi. Prices for the store, which are also tied into ~~Wii~~ Nintendo Points, will use 0, 200, 500 and 800-point tiers. Until March 2010, 1000 Nintendo points will come bundled with the device.

Nintendo is calling the DSi a "third platform," implying that it's not competing with the DS -- though as a history lesson, the DS was originally a "third platform" against the now-retired Game Boy Advance.

The DSi will launch November 1 in black and white colors. It will cost ¥189,000 (approx. US $178). We won't fault you for misreading this as "iDS," given the very iPod Touch-esque additions.

aGPS...How it differs from GPS

Conventional GPS has difficulty providing reliable positions in poor signal conditions. For example when surrounded by tall buildings (resulting in multipath), or when the satellite signals are weakened when a GPS device is indoors or under trees. Some newer receivers are better at handling these situations.

In addition, when first turned on in these conditions, some non-assisted GPS units may not be able to download the almanac and ephemeris information from the GPS satellites, rendering them unable to function until a clear signal can be received continuously for up to one minute.

An A-GPS receiver can address these problems in several ways, using an assistance server:

The assistance server can locate the phone roughly by which cell site it is connected to on the cellular network.
The assistance server has a good satellite signal, and lots of computation power, so it can compare fragmentary signals relayed to it by cell phones, with the satellite signal it receives directly, and then inform the cell phone or emergency services of the cell phone's position.
It can supply orbital data for the GPS satellites to the cell phone, enabling the cell phone to lock to the satellites when it otherwise could not, and autonomously calculate its position.
Simply capturing a brief snapshot of the GPS signal, with approximate time, for the server to later process into a position.
By having accurate, surveyed coordinates for the cell site towers, it can have better knowledge of ionospheric conditions and other errors affecting the GPS signal than the cell phone alone, enabling more precise calculation of position.

As an additional benefit, it can reduce both the amount of CPU and programming required for a GPS phone by offloading most of the work onto the assistance server.

A typical A-GPS-enabled cell phone will use a data connection (internet, or other) to contact the assistance server. With the move from film to digital, professional photographers and serious hobbyists have had one more thing to carry in addition to their camera and lenses: a laptop. At the end of a busy day of shooting, you need to off-load your memory cards in preparation for the next day’s shoot. Digital Foci’s Picture Porter 35 portable photo manager, which will be shown at CES but isn’t due out until around mid-year, will help. This 12-ounce device combines a hard drive (in capacities starting at 160GB), a 3.5-inch color screen, a memory card reader, a rechargeable battery, and an array of ports.

Simply insert your camera’s memory card into the proper slot (the device accepts CF, MMC, SD/HC Card, miniSD, Memory Stick, MS Pro, MS Duo, and xD formats) and the unit will transfer the files at a rate of about 500MB per minute. The Picture Porter 35 supports JPEG, Tiff, BMP, GIF, and RAW image formats (the latter with zoom, EXIF, and histogram data), and MPEG-1, MPEG-4 SP, MJPEG video files. As for photo management, Picture Porter 35 lets you view, select, copy, rename, delete, and sort (by name or date) files, as well as create new folders—all the typical tasks you might do on a laptop.

The device’s USB-host function lets you connect an external hard drive for making secondary backups of critical photos or the entire drive. For personal and business use, a Playlist feature lets you create photo slideshows. Other features include audio playback (MP3, WMA, and AAC files are supported), a built-in speaker, an audio recorder with built-in mic, and audio and video jacks for connecting to a TV, projector or other display.

The new Cyber-shot DSC-G3 digital still camera answers one of the most pressing needs for photo enthusiasts: how to share those amazing photos and video clips of family, friends and events as soon as you shoot. The Cyber-shot camera makes it easy to upload images and video directly to popular photo and video sharing sites wherever a Wi-Fi connection is available.

“Research shows that our customers greatly value sharing images and video clips, but they often forget or don’t have enough time if they wait to get home to upload images,” said Phil Lubell, director of digital camera marketing at Sony Electronics. “Our new Cyber-shot DSC-G3 camera provides the simplicity and convenience of sharing in the moment, while the impulse is still fresh in people’s minds.”

The camera can wirelessly connect to any public hotspot, including hotels, restaurants, coffee shops and airports. Like a computer, the camera can connect to free or fee-based hotspots, as well as to secure and unsecured access points.

The new DSC-G3 model comes with complimentary AT&T Wi-Fi access to Sony’s Easy Upload Home Page until Jan. 31, 2012. It includes Wi-Fi access at thousands of AT&T hotspots across the United States, including participating coffee shops, selected book stores and major quick-serve restaurant locations, as well as hundreds of upscale hotels and airports.

Uploads Made Easy
The new camera makes it easy to connect to the Internet and upload images. By pressing the WLAN button on the camera, you can open its embedded Web browser.

After connecting to the Internet via wireless access points, the camera automatically navigates to the Sony Easy Upload Home Page, which includes direct links to photo sharing sites like Shutterfly™ and Picasa™ Web Albums; video sharing sites like YouTube™ and Dailymotion™; and a photo and video sharing site, such as Photobucket™. Also, the DSC-G3 camera allows you to access other sharing sites for uploading photos and videos through its Web browser.

Through the Sony Easy Upload Home Page, you can send e-mail notifications from the sharing Web sites to let friends and family know that you have posted new images and videos for viewing. This is perfect for sharing with loved ones that were not with you when you took the pictures or shot the videos.
When friends and family are nearby, you can use the camera to access photos you may have already uploaded to sharing sites and display them on its high resolution 3.5-inch LCD screen.

The camera supports DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) guidelines. By connecting to such DLNA-compatible devices as Sony BRAVIA® televisions via access points, photos in the camera can be played back with high-definition quality. Smart Camera
In addition to its wireless sharing capabilities, the new camera is built for high-performance imaging. The 10-megapixel camera is about three-fourths of an inch thin and includes a 4X optical zoom Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar lens. Although compact enough to fit in the camera’s slim dimention, this lens provides excellent sharpness and color accuracy.

The Intelligent Scene Recognition™ feature automatically identifies a total of eight types of scenes — backlight, backlight portrait, twilight, twilight portrait, twilight using a tripod, portrait, landscape and macro — and automatically optimizes camera settings for each challenging shooting situation, taking an additional shot in low and bright light scenarios.

With Sony’s Face Detection technology, the DSC-G3 camera detects faces in a scene and adjusts auto focus (AF), auto exposure (AE), flash and white balance accordingly. It can also distinguish between children and adults, allowing users to to prioritize faces according to their preference.

Combining the Intelligent Scene Recognition feature with Face Detection technology, the camera includes an anti-blink function that helps make closed-eye photos a thing of the past. The camera automatically takes two shots and then determines whether the subject(s) have closed eyes. It will record images with open-eyed subjects. If both pictures have subject(s) with closed eyes, the cameras will record one and display a warning so you can try again.

Sony’s Smile Shutter™ technology automatically captures a smile the moment it happens. You can use the adult or child priority setting when shooting scenes containing both adults and children, and the camera will distinguish one face from another.

The camera’s Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO) determines the best exposure and contrast settings in almost any shooting environment, giving images a natural look with clearer details that match what you see with your naked eye. DRO also balances the contrast in scenes with strong highlight and shadow, recovering detail normally lost in shadow areas. Combining the benefits of Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization with high sensitivity mode, Sony’s Double Anti-blur feature helps reduce camera shake blur, especially when there is low light.

The Cyber-shot DSC-G3 model is also a “photo album in your pocket” and has 4GB of internal memory that can store nearly 1,000 full-resolution or 40,000 VGA-quality photos. The 3.5-inch (measured diagonally) wide touch panel Xtra Fine LCD™ screen is perfect for photo-like viewing with high contrast and wide-angle viewing. This Xtra Fine LCD screen delivers high resolution images (921,600 dots) that is approximately four times higher than conventional LCDs.

The camera also makes it easy to sort thousands of images. While shooting, images are organized automatically in albums by date. All images in an album can be displayed simultaneously as thumbnails on the screen, and the desired image can quickly be selected.

There are four ways to view photos: standard folder view, date view, favorites and event view. Images can be stored and managed on both the camera’s 4GB internal memory and an optional Memory Stick® media card.
