Lasik vision surgery can be a bit deceiving in its complexity. There are so many people having the process done without any complications, it can seem as though it’s a risk free surgery. While that’s almost correct, there is always a risk involved. Since this is your eyesight we’re working with, you don’t want to take any unnecessary chances.

Do not sign a contract for surgery until you’ve had a fair chance to pick your doctors brain and have all of your questions answered. Just because they’ve been to medical school and they’re wearing a lab coat, they still have to answer to you. You’re the decision maker and nothing happens until you’re happy with all the answers.

Am I a good candidate for lasik vision correction? Even though you may seem to be in perfect health, there are some issues you may have overlooked that could rule out lasik surgery, at least for now. If you’ve had any issues with your eyesight in the past few years, you’ll doctor will need to know. Pregnancy may be another item that causes you to put off the surgery. Make sure you disclose any medical items.

Are there any extras I’m going to need to pay for in addition to the main fee? Some doctors try to give you an amazingly low price up front and then add on all sorts of these extras after you’ve already signed an agreement. After about this early and don’t settle for the answer unless it’s very clearly spelled out for you.

How is the procedure done? Seems like a simple question, but you should know and understand what is happening. You’re mostly likely going to be wide awake during the process and you don’t want to start worrying when they do something normal which you didn’t expect.

What happens to me and my eyes after the surgery? This is a tough question to answer with much accuracy, so give your doctor a little slack. But, make sure you know what you SHOULDN’T expect. That way you’ll know right away if something isn’t normal. That’s what could cause a problem for you.

How much time will I need to take off of work? Of course, depending on your job, this may be more or less than the norm. Fighter pilots will probably want to wait a little longer than a window washer. You’ll also want to find out about operating any machinery, including your car. Don’t try to stretch the rules. If you’re doctor tells you not to drive and you do, you could be putting yourself into all sorts of legal jeopardy.

Most doctors are very eager to answer all of your questions and they understand your concerns. The more comfortable you are going into your lasik surgery, the more likely you’ll be a very satisfied customer afterwards. Some doctors will have a pre-printed brochure that answers these questions. Don’t sign anything until you’ve had a chance to review everything.

The largest metropoliton area in the country is obviously going to have a wide selection of lasik vision surgeons for you to choose from. You’re going to find a lot of competition as well because of this large number of doctors. Make sure you shop around and ask others for referals. There are a lot of people you know who have had lasik, you just may not realize it yet. Send out an email to all of your friends and ask them if they’ve had lasik and who they used.

If you don’t live in New York, consider taking a trip there to open up your options and selection of doctors. A Friday surgery and a long weekend in the city isn’t a bad way to have your laser eye correction.

Here’s a list of doctors to help you get started on your search. If you know of a doctor I should have listed here for the New York area, please give their information in the comments section below. We’ll update this list regularly

Lasik surgery cost has remained relatively low over the past few years. In spite of this, the technological advances have shot up considerably. If you're considering lasik vision correction, this is great news for you. But, it's still very important to go into this with all the information you can to help save as much as possible. Here's what you'll need to know.

One of the first questions people will ask before deciding on laser vision correction is “how much does lasik eye surgery cost?” The good news is, while medical costs have sky-rocketed over the past 10 years, lasik vision correction has stayed relatively stable. Considering the advances in the technology, the costs have proven to be very reasonable. Much of this has to do with the fact that insurance typically won’t cover the cost of lasik surgery. When insurance covers your medical costs you tend to concern yourself less with the actual cost. That’s not the case with lasik. Everyone is shopping for the best deal available.

Remember, lasik surgery prices are quoted per eye. Even if you’re having both eyes worked on, it’s still a per eye charge. Most of the studies you find will show an average cost in 2008 and 2009 of $2100 per eye. Still, you’ll find some lasik surgeons charging a little more based on office expenses as well as equipment costs. If you shop around you should be able to find a very qualified doctor at or new $2000 per eye.

Regional Variation
In the larger metropolitan areas such as New York, Chicago, Dallas and others, doctors are always trying to outdo the competition with new technologies, nicer office space and other items that contribute to the end cost. Because there are more doctors in these large areas, surgeons must spend more money on advertising. This will show up in the final cost to you. Of course, because there are more doctors, there is more competition over price as well. Overall, there is a slightly higher cost in the bigger cities, but you’ll typically get the lastest and greatest technological advances. If you can, it’s worth going a bit of distance to get the most value for your dollars.

Factors Contributing to the Cost
There have been some advances in lasik technology that could affect the cost of your laser eye correction. One of the biggest changes is something called “bladeless” lasik. Typically, a sharp blade or scalpel will be used to open the cornea. This is then folded over and a laser is used to remove or “shave” off the correct amount in order to properly correct your vision. With bladeless lasik, a laser is also used to precisely remove the cornea rather than a scapel. This will add to the cost of your laser vision correction.

Price Discounts or “bargains”
Any time you see lasik surgery below what you would expect or well below the cost advertised by other surgeons in the area, make sure you get a complete estimate of what is being provide and any ADDITIONAL cost that may be incurred beyond these advertised amount. Bargain prices will often leave out necessary items like anesthesia, post lasik examinations, facility fees, and other items you will definitely need.

Cost Breakdown
There are a lot of factors that contribute to the cost of your lasik vision correction. Office space and equipment are a large part of those costs as is the staff you see around the office. Another big factor in the cost is advertising. You most likely see adds for lasik vision in the newspaper or coupon mailers every week. That costs money and it’s passed on to you, the patient. With any medical procedure, there is going to be a high cost of insurance for the surgeon. Believe it or not, there’s even a royalty paid to the company that invented the lasik surgery technology. They license that technology to each doctor who pays a little over $100 each time they perform the procedure.

Cost a factor in your decision
As tempting as it may be, do not let the cost of your surgery dictate where you end up going. Of course, if a doctor falls way outside of the average for your area, you’ll want to keep shopping around. Find the best doctor you possibly can within a price range that’s affordable for you. These are your eyes you’re dealing with and it’s not a place to pinch pennies.

There are some potential side effects from lasik vision correction. Here are the most common side effects and complications, but, remember, the vast majority of patients never experience any of these problems.

Obviously all medical procedures have some sort of risk involved, but lasik vision correction tends to be one of the safest procedures you can have. One of the reason lasik is so popular is because it’s so safe. It’s also quick, and even the recovery time is short. Most importantly, it tends to be relatively painless. Unfortunately, the results can vary greatly, so be wary of anyone offering a 20/20 vision money back guarantee. Don’t misunderstand, most patients have 20/20 vision after their first surgery, with some needing a second treatment after about 3 months.

There are some potential side effects from lasik vision correction. It’s important you discuss the chance for complications with your doctor before deciding on going forward with the surgery. Here are the most common side effects and complications. Remember, the vast majority of patients never experience any of these issues.

Over or Under Correction – This simply means the correction was too weak or too strong. The good news is, this is usually correctable with a later enhancement.

Dry Eyes – One of the most common symptoms. Don’t be alarmed if you have dry eyes for 3 to 6 months after surgery. The best option is to use some sort of lubricating eye drops.

Sensitive Eyes - About 90 days after your surgery, you may experience a strong sensitivity to glare. If this happens, let your doctor know but rest easy, these symptoms usually go away.

Blurred Vision – Have your doctor monitor this symptom if it comes up. There are corrections you can do, but most of the time it will go away.

Infection – If this happens, your doctor will notice it right away and put you on a good dose of anti-biotics. Theis happens about 1 out of every 4000 procedures, so your risk is low.

Superficial Scaring – This could be one of the outcomes from an infection. It is treatable with a future procedure.

Thinning Cornea – Your doctor will typical plan for some degree of thinning, but it can go beyond what they expected. This happens in about 1 out of every 10,000 procedures. Your doctor will check for this in your follow up procedures.

Again, it can’t be emphasised enought that this is a very safe and straight forward procedure. Lasik vision correction is performed in offices across America every day without and trouble. Check with your doctor, ask about the risks and then go forward confidently.

You have a lot of top quality options for lasik vision surgery in the Dallas area. Many people from smaller towns and cities will travel to Dallas to take advantage of the highly skilled doctors.

Because the after lasik recovery time is typically quick and trouble-free, many will come in mid-week and then enjoy the weekend in the city before heading home. Of course, if you live in the Dallas area, you can take advantage of this at any time.

I’ve put together a list of the more prominent lasik surgery doctors in the Dallas area. I realize this isn’t a complete list and encourage you to comment below if there is a quality doctor I overlooked. Also, feel free to comment on your experiences with the doctors I have listed.

If you’re looking for lasik vision surgeons in Chicago, you have a lot of options. I’ve put together a list of doctors I’ve found and would love to have your feedback on any experiences you’ve had with them. Please comment below and mention any I may have missed, if you’d recommend them to someone.

Even if you’re not living in the Chicago area, many will travel to the city to have their surgery done and then spend a few days exporing. Turn your lasik surgery into a vacation. The after lasik recover time is very short and typically trouble-free. That means you can explore the Sears Tower, Wrigley Field and the Pier with your new eyes.

What can you expect immediately after lasik vision surgery? Unfortunately, you’re not going to open your eyes and suddenly be able to see perfectly. Remember, the entire lens of your cornea was cut and flipped back. No stitches are used to replace this flap as it will heal on its own.

Most people describe the feeling after lasik surgery as having sand in their eyes. Your eyes may even burn or itch quite a bit. In some cases the discomfort may require a mild pain reliever. It’s very important you don’t rub your eyes, even though they may be begging you to do so, because you may dislodge the cornea flap. Remember no stitches are there to hold it in place. You also may notice your eyes are very sensative to bright lights.

The good news is, most of these symptoms go away reletively quickly. You’ll notice considerable improvement within a few days. If you don’t, make sure you call your doctor just in case something isn’t healing correctly. If things seem to get worse, call your doctor immediately. Regardless of how you’re feeling, plan on taking off a few days from work.

Your doctor visits will start about 2 to 3 days after your surgery and periodically over the next 5 to 6 months. It’s very important your eyes heal properly and the only way to know is with proper eye exams.

Your doctor may prescribe some eye drops or artificial tears to help sooth the healing process. Also, plan on not wearing any eye make-up or lotions for the first couple of weeks. Obviously swimming at this point would greatly increase your risk of things going wrong.

If you’re used to playing non-contact sports, you can mostly like start those up within the first few days. Remember, you have healing cornea that you don’t want to jar in any way. You’ll definately not want to engage in any aggressive contact sports for the first month.

Assuming you’re taking proper precautions with your eyes, what can you expect in regard to your vision? It’s not unusual for your vision to take 3-6 months to return to their relaxed normal station. You may also experience a glare at night which can become very distracting. Make sure you consult with your doctor before driving at night.

If, at any time, your vision seems to be getting worse, call your doctor immediately and have your eyes examined. You don’t want to risk infection of any type.

Lasik vision correction is an outpatient procedure which will make a permanent change to the shape of the cornea. This is done to adjust your vision, in the hope to eliminate the need for corrective lenses. In effect, your cornea itself becomes the corrective lens (in simple terms).

LASIK stands for Laser Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis. Either a mechanical blade or a laser is used to cut around the cornea, leaving one side of it still connected. This allows the surgeon to fold the flap over, giving access to the mid-section of the cornea, also known as the storma.

Another laser is then used to send out pulses that vaporize parts of the stroma. How much and exactly where these portions are removed is a very precise process. Once the storma modification is completed, the flap in the cornea is replaced. It will quickly heal itself.

There usually is only minor discomfort after the surgery. Most describe it as an unpleasant feeling like there’s sand in your eyes. Doctors will typically prescribe a mild pain reliever.
