Lens implant if not suitable for lasik surgery

For those whom have severe myopia, or other conditions rendering their eyes unacceptable for lasik surgery, there is another solution now.

A razor thin lens can be implanted into the eye to correct their vision instead of lasik surgery. The procedure takes about 10 mins and the effects are almost similar to lasik, ie corrected and improved vision.

The cost however, are about 2-3 times more expensive than lasik when compared within Singapore. $3000-$5000 per eye.

Implantable contact lens (ICL), is not new in Singapore and the first ICL surgery had been done in Singapore in 2005.

One of the clinics offering the procedure is Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC).

Before rushing down to the nearest Lasik practitioner, save yourself the rejection and cost of the consultation fee by evaluating yourself for the criteria below:

Age of at least 18 years or above;
Stable vision for at least a year;
No known eye disease or eye infections[ cataracts, glaucoma ];
No history of herpes simplex affecting the eyes;
Pupil size of less than 8mm;
Overall good health [ no HIV, diabetes, lupus, etc ];
Not pregnant or breastfeeding;
Not undergoing hormone therapy;
Psychologically sound.

Pre-Lasik Consultation and Tests

Prior to having the actual Lasik done on the eyes, it's always necessary for the doctor to have a little chat and some tests with you.

More than likely, the doctor will give some advice on the alternatives to Lasik. This is to make sure that the patient is fully prepared and at the same time, the doctor will also talk more about the risks of Lasik.

At this point, perhaps the doctor will also reveal to the patient that there are no guarantee about the results of the Lasik. What the doctor is trying to say here is that, the procedure can improve existing vision but by exactly how much is something that varies. It is also important to note that Lasik will "NOT" give back the perfect eyesight of 20/20.

With the pre-lasik consultation, the doctor will assess the patient psychological state to make sure that the patient is mentally ready for the op. Once the peptalk is done, the doctor will usually give a preliminary eye exam.

The basic eyesight tests will be performed first. With the Snellen Chart, full of letters of decrementing sizes and the patient seated a couple of feet away, the doctor will point to the letters on the board and the patient will have to tell the doctor what letter is it. Next will be to test the patient if he or she can see and differentiate colours correctly by the Ishihara Color Test. Other tests might include Tonometry and Gonioscopy. These tests are to make sure the patient does not have any other eye related conditions such as red-green colour deficiencies, Glaucoma or other eye problems.

After that, it will be a tearing test. This will be the test to make sure that the tear ducts are working properly and is able to provide enough moisture to the eye. This test is conducted to make sure that the tear production is adequate for the post-op period whereby the eyes will be drier during that period. This is also known as a Shirmer's Test. Some anesthetic eyedrops will be used before conducting the Shirmer's test to prevent irritation to the eye because during the Shirmer's test, paper strips will be inserted into the eye for several minutes. The test is done simultaneous on both eyes for more consistent results.

This pre-op examination allows the doctor to know your psychological status and at the same time perform some basic eye tests to learn more about the eyes which will undergo the Lasik operation.

As more and more people in Singapore goes for the better things in life, they are also trying to upgrade themselves. Some go for slimming spas, some go for facials, some tatoo their eyebrow, some opt for cosmetic surgery and some go for "LASIK surgery".

So what is LASIK?

LASIK is a procedure whereby layers of the cornea is cut and therefore altering its shape. By changing the shape of the cornea, this procedure aims to correct the eyesight of the patient and as this procedure uses a laser, there'd be no adjacent damage as compared with using other cutting tools which require additional insertion space.

Since it's conceptualisation in the 70s, the procedure has gain much technological advancement in "precision" of how much to cut away, safety and reduced time for recovery. It's technological advancement and popularity also made such a procedure more affordable for most of middle-classes to give themself a boost in the looks department by having a image makeover.

Some whom undergone the procedure even insist that LASIK with its permanent effect is justified when comparing with the amount they spent on daily contact lenses in their history of wearing them.

Professional sportsmen whom need to wear glass to improve their eyesight swear by this procedure as they can better perform without glasses and have no fear of having their contact lenses knocked out of their eyes for the sport which involves more contact and action.

As this eyesight corrective procedure gets more popular, it is also important that potential candidates be more educated in this refractive surgery on what are the criteria required [besides being able to afford it] and what are the risks involved in it. Though, the recovery period needed has shortened since it was first done in the 70s, there is still a significant period whereby sufficient rest is required. And during this period, there'd be some critical DO's and DON'Ts which must be adhered.
