ISA VETTING AND BARRING SCHEME LAUNCHES 12 OCTOBER 2009

The Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) is a non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Home Office. The ISA is the decision making element of a new Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland which aims to prevent unsuitable people from gaining access to children and/or vulnerable adults through their work.

The new ISA Vetting and Barring Scheme launches on 12 October 2009.
The scheme will be fully operational from July 2010.

SWINE FLU VACCINATION PROGRAMME

Following a special meeting of the Social Partnership Forum (SPF) on 6 August 2009 involving the Department of Health, NHS Trade Unions and NHS Employers, to discuss the implications of the swine flu pandemic on the NHS and its workforce, the partners have welcomed the recommendation of the Joint Committee on Vaccination & Immunisation to prioritise front line NHS staff for immunisation.

Smithfield Ambulance Station re-opens

Smithfield Ambulance Station was officially re-opened today following an extensive refurbishment that included taking over the other half of the building that was previously occupied by the City of London Street cleaners.

Health Professions Council (HPC) every two years.
The next two-year cycle for Paramedics & Orthoptists is 1

What’s happening to the NHS?

During the recession, the NHS will play a vital role in ensuring that when
people lose their jobs or homes they do not lose access to healthcare.
The NHS is a key part of the fairer society envisaged by UNISON’s
Million Voices campaign, but our health service faces an increasing
threat from privatisation.

ADVICE TO UNISON MEMBERS ON SWINE FLU

Cases of swine flu (H1N1) are on the increase and the government recently took the decision to
move from containment of the illness to treatment. GPs will now be diagnosing the condition
based on symptoms that patients experience rather than a laboratory test.

Increased cases of swine flu will put the NHS under increasing pressure, as is already the case in
some areas. However it is in the autumn and winter months when we anticipate a second and
possible third wave of the illness.

UNISON has developed guidance to highlight the key issues you
should be aware of.

Please feel free to print this guidance and display in your workplace.

Re-design for home page of website

We have re-designed the home page again. Having listened to feedback from the recent change we have replaced and updated various features on the home page.

As a result, we have had to re-design the page in order to accommodate the new elements.
