Our Trip to the North Georgia Mountains

Click the play button on the video to view. This is our first video of many to come so I hope it works out ok! Before we get started Brittany and I made a quick video to thank our moms for being there, supporting us, and providing us all the tools in life to be successful. Many of the things brittany and I have been able to do and see would not have been possible without your love and support. We Love You Ladies!! Enjoy the Videos!!

The turtle in this video may seem a little random but it was just how the trip began. We saw this turtle crossing the road and we were scared sombody would run him (or her) over. So we got out of the car and brought the turtle to saftey. It was actually pretty fast and I am not to sure our help was needed.

We just returned from a weekend in the North Georgia Mountains with Heather, Kevin, Caiden, and Bella. We got a late start on Friday and arrived at Fort Mountain at dusk. Our cabin, located right on the water, was near many trails and destinations. One of the trails we explored took us to the top of Fort Mountain overlooking the surrounding terrain. The other trail, a short walk from the cabin, took us by a few beautiful waterfalls.

On Saturday, the two of us took advantage of the somewhat dreary weather and went on a drive to the nearby town of Chatsworth. We ended up taking the long way and got to explore some back roads and towns on the other side of the mountain.

Happy New Year from Atlanta! We were pretty exhausted from all the holiday traveling, so we opted to stay home. We ordered some Ethiopian food from our favorite restaurant, got some snacks and treats, and hung out at home. In accordance with tradition, we put on some new duds and had some money in our pockets (our house was a little less than clean...but don't tell anyone!)

A few minutes before midnight, we tuned in to CNN. We snapped some pics as soon as the ball dropped. It was pretty cool to be able to celebrate LIVE with New York (rather than three hours later).

Here's to a fun and fabulous 2009!

Back home for snow in Friday Harbor, WA!

Luckily I was able to make it back to my old home town in Friday Harbor for the holidays. It has been snowing like crazy since I got here so I decided to take some pictures.

I think it is snowing outside?

It looks like sombody covered my car with marshmellow fluff!

I love snow when it hasn't been stepped on. It looks like a nice soft fluffy pillow. I think our dog Zoie was thinking the same thing before I had taken this picture.

The wind was blowing pretty hard and the snow was quite "powdery". Thus, creating the effect you see above.

You can't really tell from this picture, but the sky was super blue and it looked pretty cool against the dark clouds.

Some pretty snow covered trees around the neighborhood.

I made it down to the docks to snap some shots & grab a sandwich from the Cannery House!

Camping in Alabama

We went caming in Cheaha State Park, which holds the highest point in Alabama. It is located a few hours east of Atlanta.

We left after work on Friday, and arrived at about dusk. We had to choose a site and set up camp in the dark (a lot harder than we were expecting). Johnny tried to get the fire going so we'd have a little light, but all of the wood was wet (it had rained earlier that day). Plus, finding wood in the dark was quite a chore. We were also having a tough time finding a place for the tent. The site was made for RVs and didn't really have any level ground. And there was gravel with pretty big rocks in it.

We did our best to get situated, but left most of our stuff in the car. Since we didn't want to set up the stove (and since we were getting pretty frustrated setting things up), we made pb&j sandwiches and hung out in the tent. Johnny brought his PSP, so we watched Office Space and went to bed.

Unfortunately, in the middle of the night it started raining pretty heavily. We were on a slope (and forgot to dig a trench around the tent) so the water went right into the tent. We woke up at about 2:30 to wet sleeping bags and a drenched tent floor. Brittany put a dry tarp under the sleeping bags and mats while Johnny steaked the rain fly further out from the tent.

Day 2

Things looked a lot different in the daylight, so we figured out what we needed to do to make sure the rain issues from the night before didn't happen again. We realized we needed to dig a trench around the tent. Plus, we fixed the rain fly (we discovered we had set it up incorrectly).

We decided to take a walk down to the country store a few miles away. The walk took us around the park, so we got a good look at the cabins (which looked sweet!), the lodge, the beautiful views, and the other campgrounds.

At the store we picked up some long-lasting fire logs, so as soon as we got back we started looking for kindling. We went on another little hike in the woods looking for sticks and other kindling. When we got back to camp, we set up the stove to make some mac and cheese. After our yummy lunch we took a nap.

That afternoon we made a sweet fire (after our trouble the night before, we were REALLY excited that we had any fire at all). We had heard that that night and the next day were supposed to be really cold, so we gathered lots more wood to dry out for the night. Johnny got the chilli going while Brittany set up the fire. Then we sat around talking, eating, and taking in the views.

A little later we busted out the s'mores and savored the warmth of the fire. We realized it had gotten COLD, so we tried to stay as close to the fire as we could (our clothes still smell like smoke). By the time we went to sleep it was freezing. It was a very chilly night,and Johnny didn't get much sleep (he's too long for his sleeping bag). But Brittany curled up in a little ball and slept pretty well.

Day 3

It was still amazingly cold the next day, but we sucked it up and packed up. We took time to take in the nature around us and then hit the road. But before we headed back to Atlanta we stopped by the observation tower on the highest point in Alabama. The views weren't all that impressive (we saw better views on our hike the day before), but the tower was pretty cool.

On our way back home we stopped at one of the "primitive" campsites. It was amazing! The first night we got to the park we saw these amazing night views on this bluff and saw some people with their tent on the site. Unfortunately, we had reserved an upgraded site so we couldn't stay anywhere along the bluff. In the future, we will definitely try to stay there...we've never seen such cool views. Any of those sites on that side of the mountain would be great.

Well it has been a very long time before Brittany or I have had a chance to update this thing. As soon as we made it to Switzerland from Vienna, everything became ridiculously expensive (including internet). So anyway I will do my best to catch everybody up!

I don't know if I posted this picture above or not but its of me in Freud park and it's a statue which says something about silence and intelegence basically.

Ok so I never had the chance to write about this part of the trip because I thought it would take the most time to talk about, and it Brittany and I had been operating on limited time at the internet cafes. Anyway, this picture above is a book which we had read by Viktor Frankl(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viktor_Frankl). He was a psychologist who had been imprisoned in a concentration camp and actually survived. In his book he shares stories about his and other inmates' lives and experineces in the camp. His theory centers around the psychotherapeutic benefits of finding a reason to live. This picture was taken before we had gone to Mauthausen Concentration camp, a camp where thousands of people where imprisoned and killed.

The pictures that follow this one are some pictures I had taken to share the experience I had at Mauthausen Concentration camp (http://www.remember.org/camps/mauthausen/mau-introduction.html).

This is the Outside of Mauthausen. (ABOVE) Whats so interesting is how beautiful the landscape is around it. I could only imagine what the prisoners felt when looking out into these fields.

This entire prison was built by the inmates who had occupied it. The prison was built with large stones which the prisoners would carry up this staircase from a rock quarry below. If somebody carrying a rock fell, he would often knock down the others behind him and then a domino effect would happen, creating a big rock avalanche killing many who were closer to the bottom. When I walked this staircase I realized how hard it must have been. I had sneakers on, and I had food in my body, and no real weight barring down on my back, and yet I was still struggling getting to the bottom of these steps.

The pictures below are at an abbey in Melk, Austria (http://www.sacred-destinations.com/austria/melk-abbey.htm). We stopped here after our trip to Mauthausen. This abbey is known for its amazing display of Baroque architecture.

While we were here, we saw one of the most beatiful churches. The paintings on the ceiling and the gold everywhere was breath taking.

Out for a walk in Vienna...I love you!

So the Picture you see above is me as we enter Bratislava Slovakia. This was an amazing place! I can't believe how close it is to vienna. We had taken a train and made it there in an hour!!! Awesome right?!?

Picture Perfect! The picture above is in one of the historic squares of Bratislava. We had lunch at the restaurant with the maroon umbrella on the right side of the picture...it was great!

We have much much more to show and tell.... However, we don't have much time so we have to get going, but don't worry we will be back soon!!

I just wanted to put this picture in here because I thought it was a good one of brittany and I in paris!!! Oh yea I said paris!!

This picture is of brittany and I near the vienna museum. The building behind I will get back to on because the name slips my mind as there are so many huge churches and historic buildings.

So this is brittany and me again in Karlsplatz Vienna. I was tryin to get this huge building in the background its to the right in the corner but I felt funny as everybody kept staring at us funny!!!
