I LED sono utilizzati come indicatori luminosi in molti dispositivi, e sono sempre più utilizzate per l&#39;illuminazione. Introdotto come componente  elettronico nel 1962,  i primi LED erano a bassa intensità di luce rossa, ma le versioni moderne sono disponibili in tutta la lunghezza d&#39;onda visibile, ultravioletti e infrarossi, con una luminosità molto elevata.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Il LED si basa sul diodo a semiconduttore. Quando un diodo è polarizzato in avanti (acceso), gli elettroni sono in grado di ricombinarsi con fori all&#39;interno del dispositivo, rilasciando energia sotto forma di fotoni. Questo effetto è chiamato elettroluminescenza e il colore della luce (corrispondente alla energia del fotone) è determinata dal gap di energia del semiconduttore. Un LED è solitamente di piccole dimensioni  (meno di 1 mm2).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I LED presentano molti vantaggi rispetto alle fonti di luce ad incandescenza compreso il consumo di energia più basso, più vita, la robustezza migliorata, dimensioni ridotte, più veloce di commutazione, e una maggiore durata e di affidamento. Tuttavia, essi sono relativamente costosi e richiedono più precisa corrente e la gestione del calore rispetto ai tradizionali fonti di luce. Attuali prodotti a LED per l&#39;illuminazione generale, sono più costosi da acquistare dalle fonti lampada fluorescente di produzione comparabili.&lt;br /&gt;Essi sono usati anche in applicazioni diverse come sostituti per le tradizionali sorgenti luminose, nel settore  automobilistico (in particolare per gli indicatori) e nella segnaletica stradale.&lt;br /&gt;Dopo l&#39;introduzione dei nuovi modelli al alto potenziale, i led hanno cominciato ad invadere anche altri settori, come le lampade da casa e ufficio e l&#39;illuminazione stradale, specialmente con i lampioni fotovoltaici.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight: bold;&quot;&gt;Un po di storia&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Elettroluminescenza è stato scoperto nel 1907 dallo sperimentatore inglese HJ Round del Marconi Labs, utilizzando un cristallo di carburo di silicio e del russo Oleg Vladimirovich Losev che ha riferito in merito alla creazione di un LED nel 1927. La sua ricerca è stato distribuito in russo, tedesco e inglese su riviste scientifiche, ma non è stato fatto un uso pratico della scoperta per molti decenni. Rubin Braunstein della Radio Corporation of America ha riferito in merito radiazione infrarossa da arseniuro di gallio (GaAs) e le altre leghe di semiconduttori nel 1955 . Braunstein ha osservato radiazione infrarossa generata da strutture diodo semplice utilizzando Antimoniuro di gallio (GaSb), GaAs, fosfuro di indio (InP), e il silicio-germanio (SiGe), leghe a temperatura ambiente e a 77 kelvin.&lt;br /&gt;Nel 1961, gli sperimentatori Robert Biard e Gary Pittman di lavoro alla Texas Instruments,  hanno rilevato che GaAs emetteva radiazione infrarossa emessa quando la corrente elettrica era applicata e hanno ricevuto il brevetto per il LED infrarossi.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Il primo spettro visibile pratico-(rosso) LED è stato sviluppato nel 1962 da Nick Holonyak Jr., mentre lavorava alla General Electric Company . Holonyak è visto come il &quot;padre del Light-Emitting Diode&quot;. M. George Craford , un ex studente laureato Holonyak, ha inventato il primo LED giallo e migliorato la luminosità del rosso e del LED rosso-arancio di un fattore dieci nel 1972.&lt;br /&gt;Nel 1976, TP Pearsall ha creato il primo ad alta luminosità, ed i LED ad alta efficienza per le telecomunicazioni in fibra ottica con l&#39;applicazione di nuovi materiali semiconduttori appositamente adattate alle lunghezze d&#39;onda di trasmissione in fibra ottica.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fino al 1968 i LED visibile e dell&#39;infrarosso sono stati estremamente costoso, nell&#39;ordine di 200 dollari per unità, e così avevano poco applicazioni pratiche.  La Società Monsanto è stata la prima organizzazione a produrre in serie LED visibile, utilizzando fosfuro arseniuro di gallio nel 1968 per la produzione di LED rossi adatto per gli indicatori. Hewlett Packard (HP) ha introdotto i LED nel 1968, inizialmente con GaAsP forniti dalla Monsanto, la tecnologia hanno dimostrato di avere le potenzialità per i display alfanumerici ed è stato integrata dalla HP nelle  prime calcolatrici elettroniche.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight: bold;&quot;&gt;Durata e affidabilità&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dispositivi a stato solido, come i LED sono soggetti ad usura molto limitata se impiegati a basse correnti e alle basse temperature. Molti dei LED prodotte negli anni 1970 e 1980 sono ancora in servizio oggi. Vite tipici riportati sono da 25.000 a 100.000 ore, ma il calore e le impostazioni correnti possono ampliare o ridurre questo tempo in modo significativo.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Il sintomo più comune di danneggiamento dei LED  è la riduzione della produzione di luce e di progressiva perdita di efficienza. Con lo sviluppo di LED ad alta potenza i dispositivi sono sottoposti a temperature più alte rispetto ai dispositivi tradizionali. Questo è causa di stress sul materiale e può causare precoce degrado dell&#39;emissione di luce.
